Something to think about - how Tuomas has used the instruments and and Floor's voice to simulate machine gun fire. When firing a medium machine gun of the type used in WWI, the trigger wasn't held down indefinitely until the belt was exhausted. That would risk overheating and jamming the gun. Well trained gunners would fire aimed bursts at a diagonal to the advancing troops to create an enfilade. Floor's rapid onsets and Emppu's picking were suggestive of these bursts.

The soldier didn't realize he'd killed 10 men; he *was* the 10th man. The 9th was the boy; "Today I killed him/ He was just a boy/ *eight before him/* I knew them all"

I remember once at a concert in Finland Floor's mic stand was placed too close to pyros. She had a very painful expression on her face while the flames were roasting her - still those onsets were perfect! ❤

That would've been Lahti, and Marko's mic was too close as well. It was worse for him because he couldn't move it while playing, he had to give grumpy looks at the crew until they figured out what was wrong.

You can recognize in the drums and Floor’s ritm the constantly repeated burst of the machine guns. Tuomas compositions are always so accurate. Incredible!!

I would love to see a reaction to Kurt Nilsen performing Firestone with Kygo. As the one and only winner of the world idol contest Kurt Nilsen has gone under the radar for the most part, but his voice is most certainly worth checking out.

Charlie, you have the best community, because you are the best reactor and musical and vocal analyst. Another of my favorites. Epic concept and arrangement. Marko, again plays the role of the soldier. He adds such an aggressiveness to the vocals and band in general. This aspect of Nightwish will be greatly missed. I am concerned that Nightwish is losing the metal component of their music. I love the epic intensity in this composition. Thanks again for your generous offer. Still contemplating? Be well.

You should check out the live version of this with Tarja as well (Summer Breeze 2002). I think this is one of those songs that really lends itself to her style. Edit: And no, I'm not putting them against each other. Floor is the perfect singer for NW at this point in their history.

I'm so biased toward Tarja's constant soprano. There's songs where I truly miss her operatic voice and this is one of them, Floor does go high but doesn't use the operatics as much. Like all the Wishmaster songs aren't the same with Floor, Tuomas did change a lot with Once and they're more approachable by other singers and Tarja's performance on that album does differ from earlier material.

I love both very much but this is one of the few songs that are just better with Tarja, check out the Summer Breeze 2002 version and decide for yourself. 😉

Well, this version isn't for me, I much prefer original Tarja's one. But it's nice to hear different versions from time to time too, so no complains. ;)
