That it really is. There're often melancholic undertones in even the happier songs in Finland. And then there is the full-blown melancholic misery music that people here find hopeful and love so much. It's a contradiction for sure but that's how we roll I guess.

Very interesting musical analysis by Judson, on one of my favorite Nightwish songs. "Sorrowful but uplifting", an apparent contradiction. It reminds me of a phrase from "The Andromeda Strain", where the automatic voice announcing the time left until the self-destruction of the secret base was described like this. Looking back and being a bit more serious - yes, I think this apparent contradiction is a good description of reality, in my experience. Maybe this is one of the reasons why Nightwish means so much to me.

But Floor´s voice has so many layers, when as Tarja keeps on every time her opera singing because it is her thing. I understand that you are a opera lover, not bad. We are lucky; Tarja has been able to sing to her lovers only. Nightwish did never need her and her super greedy husband after all.

Emppu, the lead guitarist, is really quite short, and usually when he has a solo, he sets his leg up on his speaker. I found Nightwish back in early 2019, and I have been hooked on their music since then...and I am 67 years old!

11:30 About the guitar: when you learn to play classic guitar, your thumb is always on the back of the neck and you play with all four fingers around the bottom of the neck. It makes sense because the strings are tight; you need that thumb/finger combination to squeeze the string all the way in. Strings on acoustic guitars are heavy and strong because their vibration is all the sound you get - so you need to play them pretty hard to get a decent amount of sound. Pop/rock guitarists hold the guitar so low they can't reach the top string(s) with their fingers. So what do they do? They take their thumb off the back and use that over the top of the neck. And not "up into the 90's", it's still the most common way to play electric guitar. And they can, simply because strings on electric guitars are much lighter and easier to press. After all the string doesn't have to create all the sound like an acoustic guitar does. The amp takes care of that.

One of the great performances in history. Floor is amazing, and just astonishing there. I'll suggest my favorite band Lovebites. Judson is hard to impress, but I respect that. Lovebites is Japanese metal, and Miyako, one of the guitarists, composes many of the songs. She studied piano since the age of 3 to be a classical pianist, but after high school, picked up the guitar and taught herself that, and joined a metal band. She plays some classical pieces in addition to being in Lovebites, some really beautiful shorter moments in a number of songs, but I suppose the biggest one would be Swan Song, which she has come into after Chopin's Revolutionary Etude. Nice review. As a Finna d a !yer(now that’s an emotional mix!) I’ve followed this band since the original Kitee Finland 5 (this is down 2). I was 12-13 and it was 2000. I stay out of the Floor/Tarja thing. It’s same Thomas music but totally different t arrangement and vibe. Both in their own way wonderful. The singers are quite close (Tarja the OG and Floor now) and it isn’t a competition. I will always love earlier NW more but that’s just me. Don’t get over your first love? I do think to get their music tho it would help to go back into their origins. The band was more Tolkien goth and totally Finnish melancholy.

😎 Such a great song. Band leader & keyboardist, Tuomas, wrote it for original Nightwish vocalist Tarja. Current singer, Floor, said this song was very difficult for her to sing. So, Tuomas lowered the vocal key and slowed the song down.

Tuomas announced they'll be celebrating their 30th anniversary in 2026. I expect it will be with a new album and a toour as well, since Tuomas expressed they won't be touring currently released album Yesterwynde (in part) because of the huge amount shelved material Tuomas created during some global hiatus I have suppressed from memory.

Sadly this version of Nightwish is no more with the loss of Jukka the drummer and most importantly Marko the bassist and male vocalist. Nightwish is still a very good band and with Floor how could they not but Marko was a major loss.

Nightwish were clearly inspired by Romeo and Juliet. They even have a song called "The Shoemaker" (name of comet) with a line from Romeo and Juliet.

The song is a tribute to planetary scientist and astronomer Eugene Shoemaker and human exploration. Shoemaker Levy 9 was the comet and was discovered by him, his wife Carol Shoemaker, and David Levy and was named for them.

Nice song pick! It is not Tarja's operatic voice but Floor does at damn good job at it still. Nightwish were really early to the symphonic sound in metal. They have been at it since 1996, 28 years now. I do also agree with Judson's initial critique: Tuomas' progressions are not very complex, which is something that became clear to me during their time with the singer Anette Olzon.

tarja or gtfo no offense to floor, but the band isn't nightwish without tarja the other four guys are cowards imo for firing her so publicly for made up bs reasons. real men talk through their issues, they don't point fingers and terminate people unjustly, which is why this band like so many of the germanic/scandi metal bands are beneath contempt and will never get another listen or sale out of me
