A great song with Floor soaring legato over Marco's gritty staccato. Notice how Floor does a little growl at one point, while being slinky and sultry in other parts. In Floor's part I particularly like the bit after the childrens' choir where she goes into the long high note starting absolutely straight and gradually adding vibrato. Masterful vibrato and breath control. Ostensibly about the Devil and Mother Gaia, it is a metaphor for the River of Life with all it's temptations and trials. This is from the Imaginaerum album and this show is part of the Imaginaerum tour To go with this there is a full length Nightwish feature film also of the same name. Dark but compelling, with the band taking roles throughout That film gives context for the album and the songs on it - watch it! For example, here, the flight of the snowman in the film reaches a section where the ghost river cones into view. When the album came out, Tuomas said:m 'life is the ultimate privilege; a river filled with wonders and horrors. Love, sorrow, beauty, evil and temptation, and we need them all to survive and enjoy the journey. Good, Evil, Pain and Pleasure' The chanting of the Young Musicians London choir cast Marco as the Pied Piper luring children into the darkness. Marco's role in the film references Snow White and bridge-dwelling trolls; Anette takes a motherly tone, insisting to 'never lose your heart' as she begs us to come across; Floor translates this better and can really act the temptress. In an interview with an Italian metal magazine, Tuomas described the two characters as "the devil and mother Gaia'. Jeff at Stratele Studios did a 2-video breakdown of Emppu's guitar part in this song, which is more complex than you might at first think. They are not touring the new album. Next year Tuomas and Troy are looking to tour as Auris with Johanna. In 2026 they are talking about what the might do for 30th anniversary but there is no hint yet that it would include a Nightwish tour, so perhaps just a show or two? Possibly do something under one of the aliases they have used (or a new alias) for an "incognito" show? Who knows? Names they have used in the past include Nachtwasser, Nevski & the Prospects, Rubber Band of Wolves and Sushi Patrol.
Thanks for coming back to Nightwish. Tuomas has said that the song is a duel between the Devil and Mother Gaia. Yeah, Floor adds the grit, and a touch of growls too. Love the back and forth with Marko. Floor adds her own touches to all the songs recorded with Tarja or Anette, she makes them her own. Check out "Song of Myself" played here at Wacken too. 1st 2 singles from the upcoming new album, Yersterwynde, are out, "Perfume of the Timeless" and "The Day Of...". No, you won't be able to see them live any time soon. They have said they are not touring the new album, taking a break. Tuomas is currently working on the next Auri album, with plans to tour that late next year. Rumor says at least 2026 before we get to see NW hit the road.
Excellent reaction, nice to see you back reacting to Nightwish. Whoever is singing Nightwish is always better live, but some songs just need that extra grit that only Floor can provide.
Great reaction, thank you. I have also listened to the original version (with Anette) but to me there is something missing Floor is able to add. This often happened to me when listening to older NW songs with one of the other two singers. That does not mean that they are bad singers; I only prefer Floor's versions. By the way, did you notice how much fun Emppu had during this song? First he passed Floor's back with his hands in the air as if he wants so say "no, this time I do not play a prank on you" (he did during "I want my tears back"). Then he stood near Tuomas saying with a gesture "I have nothing to do at this moment". Then his "bunny hopping" - I just love this man!

I actually heard this (on a youtube video, actually) before hearing the studio version. I like both but agree concerning Floor's vocals and the intensity. The live version has such an energy! There is something that I do prefer from the studio version. You know the bit where you hear the children's choir, then Empu comes in with his lovely crunchy guitar riff? In the live version, the guitar drowns the childrens voices. You can hear them very faintly for a bit, but its quite difficult. In the studio version, I think they have the tracks ( maybe 'layers' is a better word?) balanced better, so you can still hear the kids singing clearly for a bit under the guitar riff, and it sounds so good! I'm not saying I prefer the studio version to the live version as a whole (the live version trumps it in other ways), but that BIT - yes. Studio version of Nightwish songs are often pretty good when hearing various instrumental layers are concerned. Sometimes, it's due to better balance or certain layers actually being removed from the live version. This is not always a bad thing. Sometimes, lots of layers can make a piece of misic a bit too busy and a pared doen live performance is beneficial. But it's cool that the different versions offer different things.
