To Kel-n-Rich and to the wonderful and kind people I have come to know through my Nightwish journey I want to thank you so much for this thoughtful gift and the very kind words! Most of you know my passion for Nightwish ( understatement lol), but what you may not know is that their music has gotten me through some tough times. Tuomas's music goes straight to my soul. When I first found reaction channels over a year ago, hardly anyone was doing Nightwish songs. I wanted people to hear this wonderful music done by the very talented band members over the years. And I wanted to know how people would react to them. So I started getting to know how to navigate the reaction channels, not the easiest thing for a 60+ yr old woman. So that is the start of how I got here. But besides the history and music of Nightwish I got to know, it was the people that I met along the way that kept me going and still do. When I am not having a good day all I have to do is come to RU-vid and listen to Nightwish and communicate with my friends. I have been known to babble, so I will stop now. Thank you again and what a great start to my day................... :-) I am so glad you enjoyed this version of High Hopes! I love it. And no everyone I am not comparing. I just loved how they made the song their own. To me that is what a cover is. Okay now I am done! lol
I was lucky enough to see them perform this one live back on the Once/End of an Era tour. One of those moments that just blows you away..... I love the Pink Floyd version and would never have thought anyone else could do it as well as Floyd. I heard this and stood corrected. One of the all time great cover versions, it's a shame it is not more well known. Another great reaction to an awesome song.
If some don't much note Emppu's guitar work - think how Pink Foyd he made that, yet with some spice of his own. It's not always about how fast you can change the cords (that's kinda teen age way to see it) - the emotion is the goal: technique is the MEANS to get there.
I just love his work. He can do some crazy stuff if he wants to. But he's always in the service to the message, to the emotion, to the song. I just love his use of razor sharp precision legatos in this one. Delightful.
Agreed, he plays his part in the music, taking the lead where he needs to then falling back to support the other sounds. He's not there to show how good he is, he's just there to look cool, have fun and make beautiful music.
Marco is such an underrated singer; absolutely mesmerizing. And the irony is that you finally do a live Nightwish video from the Tarja era and Tarja's not even in the video!
I've always recognized Marco's voice right from the start. I've been listening to Nightwish since 2002, and it began with the album Century Child, where you can hear Marco's voice several times. He's phenomenal!
Another amazing composition of the best rock band in history: PINK FLOYD. Performed by the best symphonic metal band in the world. The combination can´t go wrong. I love this version and as a great fan of PF, I think it's perfectly done. Another thing: Mr. Jukka, what a great drummer, I don't know if techinically he's the best or average, he´s obviously very good. But it's his style of playing, his passion, that shows in every performance. And I love his LATENT STATE.
Eduardo Acosta it's a real shame that his health is not up to long tours. Especially live his drumming sounds better than Kai Hahtos. No matter how much more technically gifted Hahto is.
I was there. The atmosphere was really incredible during this, made all the more haunting by the nagging feeling that something was really wrong -- and well, as already mentioned by others, they parted ways with their lead singer and longtime friend Tarja immediately after the show.

Masters, Marco's voice Emppu's guitar playing is so relaxed, I'm a Pink Floyd fan from the beginning on vinyl but this cover is perfect, and I don't usually like Covers
Rich LOVE absolutely LOVE the Hendrix Tee!!! Yeah Nightwish has fantastic musicians who have played together a very long time and in this cover it shows. Doing a Pink Floyd cover takes a real band with real skills just to attempt never mind nail it like NW did here. Happy Birthday to NW's #1 FAN and may she celebrate many more listening to great songs like this!!. Thank you both for doing this, covers are something most people shy away from and a Pink Floyd cover most bands are afraid to touch never mind cover. Pink Floyd will always be Pink Floyd but NW did this song proud and their version was simply fantastic!!!

Very early? End of an Era was recorded in... 2005 I think? By that time they had been active for almost 10 years, had added Marco to the lineup (thank god for that! He's so awesome!) and 5 studio albums under their belts. I wouldn't call that very early. In any case: superb cover and Happy Birthday Ann!
GeeKAdemics Okay, I hate to quibble over silly things but my point was this was recorded live in 2003 and released on a 2005 best of album. As of 2003 the band had been in existence for 8 years. Today in 2019, the band has been around for 23 years. This was therefore recorded early in their existence. Not a big deal and nothing worth arguing about. I agree Marco’s arrival in 2001 was a great addition to the band. Have a great day!

'Very early' to me just always has a ring of the innocence of their first two albums or so, rather than a good third into their lengthy career; hence my remark, which is, you are right to say, pretty much pointless pedantry on my part. Empuu is a very good guitarist. He just often chooses NOT to shred all the time. I've seen comments in some of the GHOST LOVE SCORE reaction videos that he mustn't be a very goo player because that solo is so simple. But the little fella can shred like a demon when when he needs to.
You can't argue with the brilliance of Gilmore, but this cover by Nightwish is such an equally brilliant production. This is so much more dynamic and emotional that I now have to count it as one of my favorites by Nightwish. Marko was fantastic. Truly a great performance.
Emppu made total justice to David Gilmour's guitar solo, super technical yet emotional solo as it's in pink Floyd songs. And Marco Hietala is an underated singer because Floor is incredible. Marco is amazing, he has songs he sings in Nightwish as "While Your Lips are Still Red". Also he sings "The Islander". Marco also has solo work and took part of a project called "Northern Kings" with the best Heavy Metal singers in Scandinavia IMO.
Yes many years ago Tuomas was a exchange student here in the United States. He was taken to the Metallica concert then, and it had an effect on the rest of his career!
Marco is ten years older than the rest of them, and was already respected veteran of the Finnish metal scene when he joined Nightwish, and a lead singer in his own right. He has a great 'novelty' band called Norther Kings, which is him and three other top Finnish metal singers who do metal covers of 80's songs. Check out their live version of 'Take On Me' which they put forward as an entry for the Eurovision Song Contest. That was a first time reaction for me too! That is a nice version. Of course, nothing will ever beat the original (the emotion that Dave puts into his notes is unparalleled), but this is an excellent interpretation of a magical song!
according to this specific song I might agree with you. But there are so many absolutely great covers out there, some of them even top the original song. One cover for example I think is better then the original is the Saxon version of "ride like the wind" from Christoper Cross.
I know a dude in a band who writes songs and he says that Pink Floyd's songs are often quite simple melodies, but it's the arrangements and how they're all put together that make them brilliant. This song and 'Comfortably Numb' being prime examples of this.
I see a striking resemblance to how some people act towards Nightwish, not that I would are to claim they are on a same level to PF (they are close to that personally tho). They don't have the flashiest long guitar solos or complex instrumentations than some metal bands, but the overall compositions are top notch always thanks to Tuomas
I can give you but a like and sub, but know that myself being born in USSR, my father who is unfortunately long dead used to make me acquainted with such priceless pieces of music, and this song in particular, and it's amazing to now in this day and age see people of your generation on the internet appreciating such covers of these classics made by bands that were arguably addressing my generation. Great reaction as always and happy birthday to Ann! =) Just for some context: this song was played in 2005 at the very last concert that they played with their original singer, Tarja. Immediately after the show, the letter telling her their decision to fire her was given, so they played the whole show knowing that this was the end of an era (hence the title of the live DVD this is from End of an Era).

Kel-n-Rich, cool to hear you lived in western Mass! I lived in Sunderland when I was at UMass in the late 70's. Hung out in Northampton a lot! Then lived in Southwick, just a few towns down-da-line from Northampton, for 37 years (worked in Connecticut) until 2014! Small world! And yes, I love this Pink Floyd cover too! You two just keep being excellent!
If thinking this song doesn't really lend itself to being remade as heavy metal bombast makes me a hater, then so be it. Almost all of the atmosphere and tenor of the original was lost. I've never seen this band before and I'm impressed by their musical chops, so there's that. But I think this cover was a misstep. I'm glad you like it, though. Music is a gift.

Seelenwinter 666 A cover shouldn’t be a carbon copy...I’ve been a Floyd fan for years and I’ve seen them live 3 times,This version doesn’t have the depth or richness instrumentally that the original has but I like Marcos vocals on this...more emotion than Gilmore though definitely lacking Gilmores guitar skills.And to be fair Gilmore said this is his favourite cover version of the song,reasonable praise imo.

And you definitely have to fill that unicorn mug with root beer or something so that the foam comes over the top and looks like brains.
The importance of this is contextual - they were firing their female lead singer Tarja after the show, so the fact that she is offstage, and the lyrical meaning of the song, takes on added meaning
I have a firm belief that bands shouldn't cover Pink Floyd or Led Zeppelin, unless they know they can pull it off in a big way. Nightwish's cover of High Hopes is fantastic!

Anyway, liking unicorns? #Gloryhammer The Unicorn Invasion of Dundee, trapped in a train to Gouda, the Netherlands. It's power metal about unicorns and evil space wizards. Gloryhammer doesn't take itself particularly serious, hence them playing in costume. It doesn't try to fix the cheesiness of power metal, it embraces it.
