Thanks for sharing your reaction to a song that gets better & better with each listen, which is something that defines greatness in songwriting. The composer, Tuomas Holopainen, has said that this song is his take against all the fear mongering that plaugues main stream media these days. It's a form of mind control to keep the masses of ordinary people in line with official narratives of the ruling class.

I much prefer "The Perfume of the Timeless," but this is really good too. Both songs were mixed as intended, so there was nothing to change. Tuomas has said repeatedly it's about the art and not about doing fan service.

I prefer The Day of…. I will say I have loved the prominence of the bass in both so far. They just released a snippet of next single to be released sounds like a bit heavier than these two. 🤘

Since "Noise", Nightwish has embraced Rammstein-levels of video production. I like PotT as well, though it suffers by not having a radio edit.

Enjoyed your reaction. I love both Day Of and Perfume of the Timeless equally. As a newer fan (2020) I seem to enjoy Nightwish's newer, more mature albums more than long time fans of the band. This is a song and video that takes multiple listens and views to pick up on everything in it. Tuomas has said the song is about how we allow ourselves to be controlled by fear and misery. The adult voices are those who buy into the fear mongering while Tuomas uses the children's innocent and uncorrupted voices to represent those who don't buy in into the fearmongering and see the world as it really is. In the beginning Floor's lyrics are all about numerous end of days, apocalyptical events that people have pushed and bought into while the children's choir is taking a different tack, saying ignore the doomsday stuff and do the hard work that will actually make life better. It took me a few listens to pick up on the fact that the first two choruses are just the children but in the last choruses Floor joins in with the kids, representing people coming together to reject fear and have hope for the future. Visually, the beginning part with Floor putting eye drops in her bandmates eyes reminds me of Clockwork Orange. A visual metaphor for us being force fed "never ending doom porn" to create fear and misery in our culture. One of my favorite parts in the video is the scene with the Mayan's on their knee's before a solar eclipse which happens at the start of the second chorus. The adults are on their knee's, fearing the end of time as predicted by the Mayan calendar (supposedly in 2012) while a child is protectively hunched over a recently planted seedling representing hope for a better future. Also the red rose at the end being held by a child is also a symbol of hope as well. For me the lyrics in this song are so fantastic. A litany of never ending "Day Of's" that re supposed to keep us fearful and compliant. The line "fear more in this grave new world of 84". For me that means we have entered a world where the governments and their allies in the media, especially social media prescribe for us the correct way to think on subjects, just like George Orwell's novel 1984. Originally I had thought the line "A new strain sent you back into your cave. Obey, stay away, cover up" was a reference to Covid but others mentioned it was a reference to Plato's allegory of the cave. A much deeper and profound interpretation of the lyrics and more in line with what Tuomas would probably be going for. My absolute favorite lyrics are "A need to feel dread, gloom, awe. A lust for never-ending doom porn". Never ending doom porn has to be one of the best turn of phrases I have ever heard. It is such a poetic and witty way to describe how people are fascinated with the bad and evil and give short shrift to the positive and uplifting.

Tuomas said about this song: Floor at first is acting to be the preacher of fear, then the kids saying how things really should be and in the last chorus they join and that’s where the magic happens. For me, the children’s choir gives a great twist and balance to the song and gives me chills every time! Like stated before in Weak Fantasy: Fear is a choice you embrace! Universe: not to spoil anything, but you can stop worrying ❣️

Tuomas writes it, Scary Floor sings it....

They are really at the top. Tuomas is brilliant. The band playes as one. And Floor is her perfect self doing amazing stuff and letting it sound as if it is easy.

Mr.Tuomas is pushing all the members to limit..but there is no limit for Nightwish..They know,what they are doing..Tuomas was conquered all the dimensions of univers..I Wish He will comes back to Gothic,as an album Once...and Floory is made fore it..

It is very difficult to compare two masterpieces. I like that Nightwish seems to emphasize the symphonic dimension of symphonic metal. In symphonic music, the role of singing is quite small compared to orchestral music, and singing is usually more of a choral song than a single singer. I like this, although I also like Floor's contributions on the earlier album. He will probably get his share in this new one as well.

I'm not a fan of either one of the New NW singles to be honest, but the first one's got the Troy ending which I found downright annoying. Purposely drowning a vocal giant like Floor in the mix to then end the already overlong piece by putting the spotlight on a mediocre backing vocalist at best.. Floor btw, gave a very revealing interview recently. It's in Dutch (Aardschok metal magazine Aug/Sept edition), so it should be fun and relatively easy for you guys to read. Just a sample. Floor: "Van mij had Troy misschien wel wat minder mogen zingen op het nieuwe album" 👀
