This is a brilliant demonstration of Define's power. I had tried to get my head around using it, but had failed miserably. I now understand how to use it. Thank you!
learnt the basics of define2 on another channel and knew there was more .. you made it all clear, and WOW .. the power of those control points I now understand. Awesome, thanks
Thoroughly enjoy your lessons, and find they are the best and clearest available. I'm working my way through all of your work, particularly the Nik software. Like your little prep dance b4 also.
G'Day from Downunder, Ed. I've only just discovered your excellent tutorials and my learning curve is going up very steeply! I've been using DFine on 'Auto' but after watching this tute, I now understand just how powerful the plug-in really is. Many thanks, Rob.
Thank you! I've been struggling getting my head around some of Nik's tools. You do a great job walking us through them, I feel so much more confident with the software now. You've gained a subscriber.
+bug470s definitely. This can be a little confusing inside the Nik collection but once you have it mastered it is pretty fantastic I think. Good luck and happy editing.
Thanks, just came back and watched it for a second time after a week. Seems more has clicked for me now. Me thinks this is going to be VERY useful. Back to crappy old film image restoration and trial this out more.
This was great, watched the whole thing. Control points are a bit confusing though, and it'd be cool to see a comparison between Lightroom noise reduction and Dfine 2. Very cool, thank you!
To my opinion, Lightroom as Nik software gives the same results, but the big differents is that the Nik software collection has these control points which makes it very powerfull as ed point out very well in this vid.
Ed, many thanks!!! This is just an amazingly good instructional video! I had played around with DeFine Auto a tad with excellent results, but your tutorial opened up a LOT of doors!!! The masking parts you demonstrate so well and it was a bit jaw dropping! I know you did this back in 2016, but I hope people can latch onto Nik and Define for dramatic noise reduction with lots of options!!!!! Again, thanks!
a 100% thumbs up Ed, I've been using nik for about a year but it looks as though I've only been using 10% of it. My iMac is I'll at the moment and is away at Dr Apple! I can't wait to get it back and really start using my Nik again. Now all I need is for Topaz and onone to become free. (dreaming)
Brilliant videos thankyou so much. Can't understand why people have to comment on minor things they don't like about the presentation when you have given freely of your time to share your knowledge with us for free! Weird! Anyway, one question, I do not see the 'Nik Window' open in Photoshop and when I go to 'File'' 'Automate' the Nik option to click to show it doesn't appear either/ Any help much appreciated. Thanks again.
you have taught me a lot with these videos and i watch them again and again thanks for all your help i was wondering what the name off the website you keep saying i just can`t pick it up thanks again
its the name of my channel. Photos In Color. photosincolor.com there is a lot of interesting content on the site and there is a lot more coming too so stay tuned.
+Robert Hoffmann Fantastic. I am busy filming the next episodes right now we I am on track to get the full Nik Collection tutorial... Good luck and I look forward to hearing what you think of my other tutorials.
+Photos In Color I used DFine 2 only in automatic mode. I didn't understand how it works in manual mode. It looked difficult for me. But now I can see that it's easy. Thanks. I'm looking forward to get know new tools from your Nik Collection tutorial. All other features of Nik Collection quite new for me. So thank you very much.
I'm wondering what a recommended workflow is when using a raw image and starting in Lightroom since using define sends it back as a tiff file. I would think you'd want to recover highlights and shadows and set the white balance before sending it to Nik. What do you think?
it's my understanding that the tiff file will still contain all the information you need, the same as the raw file. if you Google the recommended work flow, it's on Nic's website. they say start off using RAW pre sharpener.
Brilliant video Ed, despite the nutty dance at the beginning. ;-) Whilst I have the Nik Collection (purchased before it became free :-( !!), when I selected the file menu, the Nik Collection selective tool option did not appear; any ideas why?
+laurent Laurent Its fantastic and even better now its free. heheheh. The Nik Collection has some pretty cleaver masking capabilities however they are not well explained anywhere. I will try my best to explain in my video tomorrow. With Dfine 2 if you add a - contrail post then the masked are will show black. if you addd a + control point the mask area will show as white and everything else will show as medium grey. I hope this helped. Playing around with it should help a lot too.
You know I love your lightroom videos mate but do you use capture one at all? Would be great to see some videos on that in your easy to understand and fun style :)
+Dave Hughes I don't actually use capture one at all. I had a dabble once but have been very focused on Lightroom and photoshop. It may be something I could focus on in the future. I am super humbled that you like my teaching style though. It means a lot.
Same here, been a dedicated LR user for years but tried capture one just because LR wouldn't tether with on of my Nikon's. I've only had a bit of time with it so far but got to say I think it handles Nikon's raw files better than LR and a lot quicker! Oh and no worries man, keep up the good work :)
+Matthew Luxford So happy you enjoyed this Nik Collection tutorial. its super perferful for reducing noise in lightroom and photoshop. I actually added a load of noise to the image before so i could show how to reduce it and also show the real power of the plugin.
You need to search for "Google nik collection" , otherwise you will get results for "DXO NIK Collection" DXO now own the new and improved NIK 2.5 which has gotten rid of the bugs in the "free GOOGLE" version. NIK is used industry wide by professionals because of its power and ease of use. Well worth buying.

Hello Ed from Rome! ;)I do love very much your LR videos, so i just would like to ask you: why should i use Nik Collection instead of LR to do tasks? I.e. why DFine and not the LR sliders to reduce noise, why Silver fx instead of LR to manage B/W? Thanks in advance for the answer :)
Hi! How Dfine2 is supposed to work? I mean, 1st in the chain (before all other tweakings in exposure, sharpness, contrast etc) or last in the chain (after all tweakings)? Tks!
Liked the tutorial, I had Nik Collection for Aperture, and now for Adobe Cloud (Google was kind enough to extend my license in 2015). Can't help but wonder if Nik Collection is now Google's version of Aperture, no longer supported, no new updates. Or does Google have something more powerful in the works?
+Malcolm Johns that's great you have been using the Nik collection for a while. I hope my tutorials are still able to bring some new knowledge or techniques. Personally I don't think google I attempting to have its own software foundation program light aperture or Lightroom. I actually think this entire plugin is used to enhance their mobile app snapseed. They probably weren't selling many copies for $150 so they probably just made it free as more users is more valuable to them. Thoughts?
+Photos In Color You may very well be right. My Daughter does product photography for her web store, as well as others, and although I raved about Nik Collection, and offered to buy it for her, she was hesitant. Now that it is free, she plans to download and install. I am sure that she will put me to shame once she starts using the tools. Can't wait for the HDR Efex Pro tutorial, I did something cool with my Christmas tree and the plugin. Crossing my fingers that Google intends to keep updating the collection.
When working on Time-lapses, could I reduce noise of one image in DFine 2 then export back to Lightroom to sync all the rest of the images in the sequence to get effected and have less noise as the first one?
+TMV Exactly... it works almost exactly the same, i did also demonstrate how to do it inside lightroom (It the begining). The only difference is that when saved in Lightroom that is it whereas in photoshop as a smart object and smart filter you can go back and make changes. But inside the plugin it is exactly the same
+David Roby Ok...... hehehehe. Jokes. Yes I will try to do that. I just get carried away when doing my Nik Collection tutorials. i will definitely try to improve though.
+Photos In Color I have to do the same with 'basically' when I'm doing presentations! I'll have to leave a comment on Moose Peterson's tutorials as well! I enjoy your presentation style very much and have learned much from them. Thank you.
Hi Ed Thanks for all info i appreciate it , With the Nik Collections im impressed with what your saying but unfortunately i have bought Light room 6 and Elements 14 but im sorry its not compatible , after i found out after installing , But that's my problem , But thanks for the everything keep up good work m8
+John Cartwright oh know. I am so sorry to hear that. I use Lightroom CC so everything is up to date. Have you thought about subscribing? It's a great thing. I would not just update to use the Nik collection plugin though but it is good to have.
+Photos In Color Hi Ed thanks for reply I'm thinking about going it CC but shame I bought them before your great tutorials on all things . Keep up the great work look forward to seeing more and learning from all tutorials.
+Phantom RC Great. So happy you enjoyed my Nik Collection Tutorial. I have more coming each day so keep checking back. You'll be a pro by the end of the week. :)
+I_RIDE_R1 Tanks so much. keep checking back all week as I work through each and every one of the Nik Collection plugins. Your be a pro by the end of the week.
+Simon Rühl That is very true. However I actually added a load of grain in lightroom first that way I had something to work with to really show the power. The grain you saw was similar to 3200 in my opinion. I know grain and noise is different put in a flattened exported image they appear similar and served the purpose of demonstration. I hope this makes sense. lightroom is great for removing noise outdoes not allow masking so that is where DFine come is use for sure. I still hope you enjoyed this Nik Collection tutorial.
Hi Ed, you do look like you have caught the sun, but then did you say snapchat or snapjack? Are they Mac related as in Chrome I tunes shows up for both imo? just curious.
I hope to be brow soon. Hehehebe. I said snapchat. It's a visual storytelling app. It's pretty popular and I kind of show my daily stories their. In fact last night I got stung by a scorpion and this was on my snapchat story. Hehehe. Pretty funny.
+Photos In Color Hi Ed, presumably you are not in UK, to be so stung? I trust all is okay for you. And thank you for showing how to use the Nik Collection which I will be downloading today, regards, Joe
+Joe Beard I am actually based out of Vegas right now so there is a lo of crazy critters in the desert. amazing though. I am happy you are enjoying my Nik Collection tutorials. Good luck and let me know how you get on with it.
Can you please share the link for the stock photo site? I've listened a few times, tried using CC to figure it out (caption says it's "stock picked up calm") and everything I'm trying brings me to financial stock websites or domain parked sites!
+digitalux The photo is from stokpic.com I mention it in the video. its my stock photos site. The actual image stokpic.com/project/man-holding-green-apple-with-love-heart-2/
A bit narcissistic, but does an adequate job of demonstrating some of the capabilities-would like to have seen more on the use of brushes. Unfortunately, noise reduction is still in its infancy. Until "smart" noise reduction evolves to the point where you can easily dial out as much noise as you desire (0-100%) without losing ANY detail or ANY sharpness, Define 2 is an adequate bandaid. Software geeks: keep working at it!
Dilemma! I find the Nik Collection in lightroom when i right click on the image as advised. But when I move over to PS and go to File>Automate i DO NOT see the Nik Collection. What am i doing wrong?
hmmmmm it sounds like a graphics card issue to me. Your computer may be having problems processing the image. try restarting you computer and ensuring you have the most up to date drivers. it could be a speed or RAM issue.
