Actually its a misconception that 1kg of x is the same weight as 1kg of y. According to wikipedia: "In science and engineering, the weight of an object is the force acting on the object due to gravity." While they do in fact share the same mass, for example 1kg of iron would be a small dense rod, while 1kg of feathers would be a stuffed bag. Since the weight-distribution is different, different amount of energy required to lift them, therefore they do in fact differ in weight, and 1kg of iron heavier because the focused weight requires more energy.

a kilogram(mass) of steel is heavier(weight) than a kilogram of feathers. weight and mass aren't the same. a kilogram of feathers would weight less because the feathers have higher air buoyancy, unless they were crushed in a super tight ball. .example. if you take a non inflated balloon of lets say 5 grams (arbitrary number), you can put it on a scale and it would weight something. If you fill that balloon with helium, it would fly up thus weight nothing on the scale, but it would still be 5 grams. So a kilgram of steel would push harder on the scale than a kilogram of feathers, thus weight more.
