I love watching your videos with Nikki! I'm a new rider and watching Nikki's progress really encourages me. My fear getting on the interstate is speeding up fast enough! I have a small Honda rebel 250 and the fastest I've gone is 65 miles for a short period. Another fear is the wind and other vehicles! Lol! Yay Nikki! Thank you Dan for all your videos! ;)
@buckrogers7498
@buckrogers7498 5 лет назад
I hear that. I'm still getting used to 55+ speeds. 45-50 I'm fine, when it goes above that I white knuckle and start to over think road surface, wind, and speed. A little bit at a time. I also just put a windscreen on my bike and am hoping that it lessens my fatigue at faster speeds.
@jaretaustin14
@jaretaustin14 5 лет назад
A good practice is to slowly move up to it. Find roads that are 45 then 55 then 60 and so forth. Just work your way up. When you decide to get on a highway drive around in your car and find a nice long downhill on ramp with a clear view of the highway and then find a long off ramp and check that neither is likely to have gravel so when you do decide to take that highway run its all planned out, youve minimized the amount of stuff you need to worry about and can just focus on safely merging. Also try for a time of day that isnt as busy. You got this, as you seen nikki its not that bad and thats how it is with most things to do with riding, the bike can handle it no problem, its always just a mental block
@masterofpuppets1985
@masterofpuppets1985 5 лет назад
Grats Elizabeth. Do not worry, you'll make it at the right time. There's no time limit, but the most important thing is: do it when you have no fear and you can handle the situation like you do with your car. You will be fine and you'll be able to react to any hazard without panic moves. Buck, all you need to do is feel your bike: she will tell you everything you need to know to give road correct interpretation; everything about holes, grip, gravel, front wheel float. Do not overthink anything as long as you feel your bike stable and reactive to your moves. Doing that makes you nervous for no reason and you could go panic for things don't deserve it. Know your limits before knowing the limits of your bike. You are the only one who knows how far you can go without losing control of the bike and the situation. Sry for my non flawless english.

The freeway can be scary. AZ looks like a great place to learn. I think statistically the freeway is safer than riding on regular streets because there's no intersections or opposite flow traffic. I think I heard that from DDFM...or from some other RU-vid moto channel. When I first started riding I had a 3/4 open-faced helmet. (I wanted a retro vibe helmet to go with my vintage bike.) A lot of time I would ride with sunglasses as eye protection. First time on the freeway I turned my head to make sure the lane was clear and my sunglasses were blown off my face by the wind. Those weren't cheap sunglasses. I've since switched over to a full-faced helmet. (Still has a retro look to it, but it's a safer option.) Haven't lost any more expensive sunglasses.

Nikki's Adventures you’re doing great. I wish more women would get into riding bikes. Maybe you’ll inspire a few to try it. There’s some decent full face helmets that have a 60s/70s vibe. I just got the Torc T-1 retro full face helmet, which I like a lot. The old 3/4 helmet is collecting dust. Can’t risk smashing my face into the ground if I go down.

I don't remember the video, but a while back you and Nikki were riding and you both were talking about curves and how sometimes she'll just lean her whole body and head into a turn to help navigate, even though sometimes it's overkill. Nikki talked about how it helps sometimes. That was good advice for a beginner or someone getting back into it. Thanks for making these, especially Nikki for putting herself out there and subjecting herself to all the comments and direction. I couldn't do it.

I love these videos, makes me feel not alone, as my first motorway ride was the same. Getting used to the wind, and I have a small windscreen on my bike, and its only a 250cc bike with 5 gears, not even a 500cc 6 speed like Nikkis Rebel. So for me, I was really using the downhill slope of the onramp to build up the speed, and the extra noise, vibration, wind pushing me around a little took some getting used to, but it was awesome, so I took the same motorway route home again, rather than the backroad I had been using. The leg out thing into the wind I learned from another blog, and that really helped me with a bit of confidence. Looking forward to some better weather now for a longer ride!

I really enjoy these videos as a new rider. I have done the highway a few times in my month of riding. I still get tense doing it - luckily I don’t have to use my bike for anything other than leisure riding - the motorcycle dealer is a fair amount away so that’s my next goal is make it over to them via highway. Thank you for taking us on the journey

I've had my endorsement since the end of June (2019), and the interstate was my last frontier to conquer. It was a bit unnerving at first, since you completely lose that safety net of possibly putting a foot down. Not happening at 65-70mph. Also, the seams - I hate the grooves in the highway construction, heh. You catch one of those and you're done. But like everything else on the bike, I just made myself get out of my comfort zone and took some rides on the highway. I probably only have about 75 miles on it under my belt, but a large amount of the initial hesitation and fear is gone.

Just got on the highway lastnight I drove 88 miles home. I never rode a motorcycle in my life but i wanted the bike. I only had an idea of how to turn but i did practice a bit from where i picked it up. It was scary at the begining driving through city streets. Finally i felt capable to drive it on the highway. what i did not expect was the gusty wind pushing my bike and the speed wobbles. I dont know what caused the speed wobles because i was going at 60ish the whole time. Thank god i didn't get hurt🙏

@jvillain9946
@jvillain9946 7 месяцев назад
The highway was probably the scariest thing to me when i first started riding years ago. But our highways are in the mountains and comprised of constant sharper blind turns with larger elevation changes. Theyre also bumpy, uneven, poorly maintained, have never ending road construction, heavy crosswinds and packed with semis. Literally the first time i ever had to get on the highway, it was on an unlabeled grated on ramp merging into a barracaded single lane with a 4 inch vertical step separating lanes at a 45 degree angle with a semi barreling up behind me with a 40mph crosswind. I just kept seeing my front tire getting caught on the uneven lane and getting tossed into oncoming traffic to be ran over by a semi. I was able to wheely the front wheel up but the back wheel caught for a second and scared the shit outta me. I refused to travel on the highway for months after that. I still hate road construction and esp cially uneven lanes but now i know what im doing.

She did so good! Dan, you’re not wrong about not all ramps being so long. Some in my area are maybe 40 yards long so you gotta almost be at speed before you get on and we have a couple that are tight decreasing radius turns where you have to get up to speed fast out of it or slow down hard on the exit. Keep practicing Nikki, it’s not about who gets there faster, all the matters is that you get there!

This is great and helpful. I’m a new rider and have yet to brave the freeway. I have a better sense of what to expect now. Unrelated question: what video gear and software are you using? The pan effect is excellent. That’s done in software after the ride, yes?

I got tense just watching. I’ve only been on my R3 for 3 days and I can’t imagine going 75. I hit 40 yesterday and it felt like I was going 90. Can’t imagine highway speeds. 40 felt so scary

Me too. It seems scary as hell riding with traffic. Should you not be afraid and just be like fuxk it, as in go all the way in? I don't know how to approach it.

@@__-ti2en I’d say it’s gotten a little better. The wind is my biggest issue now. This light R3 gets blown all over the road. At the end of the day it seems like most just go for it. I haven’t gone down yet so I guess it’s not going too bad. I think my next bike is gonna be heavier so the wind doesn’t effect me so bad

@@chrismatthews1762 Glad to hear things are improving for you. You're probably right. I guess you just have to face the fear.

It’s been about 20 years since I’ve ridden and I’m just getting back into it. How are the two of you communicating with each other?

The helmets have mics in then and can share audio to each other as long as they aren't far apart

Hi guys, don't you get lessons in de US before you can do your exam to get your license? It looks like/sounds like she has never done this before. In Europe you have to do lessons in city riding, highway riding, maneuvering the bike etc. and after about 20/30 hours of lessons you can go to the exam.

When you moved into the left lane, you should remain in position 1 on the left... it's still the most visible position and you both move the same distance across lanes... By taking position 3 you made yourself less visible and forced her to cross the lane to get in position. Next time try keeping your formation. Front rider should always be on the left for visibility.

Wow a 75mph speed limit. So do people go 75, or faster? Here in PA it’s 55mph on the section I drive everyday. And traffic usually runs about 70mph. Anyway, great job Nikki! I know the very first time I drove the bike on the interstate I hated it. But now it’s no big deal. I do 24 miles of interstate driving every day. here in PA we have some ramps that are a 270degree turn (25mph)on the ramp and there is no acceleration ramp at the end before it dumps you out onto the interstate in a 65mph zone

Nikki's Adventures first time I rode on the highway was about 3 weeks after getting my can am. My wife and I were heading to the MSC, our states version of the MSF. I think at that point I’d only ever driven 200 miles on back roads, all under 50 mph. So a constant 70mph was so different. I think I just wasn’t prepared for all the wind forces. And the first time we did it was for like an hour. But after that day I knew I had to keep doing it if I wanted to ride to work. Here in PA you can’t ride after dark with your permit. But taking the state class you get your license if you pass the test at the end. So after a few more times of doing it I learned what Dan told you, loosening up and going with the wind instead of fighting it. Also the more you ride in a sport bike position the easier the wind is too. Very easy to do on a can am. The biggest things I’ve found to watch out for are other drivers, pot holes and large bumps. Now I ride to work every day that it’s nice with about 15 or so minutes each way on the interstate and it’s pretty fun. But I’m sure you’ll do great since you’ve got Dan teaching you all the things that I had to figure out. Good luck and keep it shiny side up!

Great video, I remember my first time on the interstate being pretty intimidating lol! Dan, what do you use to record the dialog for your videos? I noticed you have the Hero7 Black which is what I have, but I ended up getting the microphone adapter because I couldn't figure out the best way to record my dialog for the vlog I'm trying to start. Y'all should come riding with us the next time we go out if you're not teaching a class.

Same question, are you using a separate voice recorder synced to the Insta360?

What kind of bikes are you all riding? They sound good! And they seem to handle well.
