Hello everyone. Welcome to Vahagraphy Your Rock & Roll Photo Channel. This is my official review of the Nikon 16mm f/2.8D AF Fisheye Lens. This review will include full specs, sample images, and my full analysis of the Nikon FX fixed focal length Fisheye.
I've been using this Fisheye for years and it's by go to for fisheye work. I use it on my Nikon D4 D3 D800 D850 DSLRs and also My Nikon Z6 Mirrorless camera with the FTZ adapter for photography and video work.
I also take sample images unedited for you guys to look at straight out of camera and share some professional images I've captured over the years on paid work as well.
It's been extra special to me as part of my camera bag and I will tell you why I pick this lens over all else.
I go over all the main features and dive heavily into the the specs. I take this camera out for a little test drive around town and have a little fun.

You are very welcome. The 16mm fisheye is a great option and is very useful. Sharp and delivers a great wide effect. Very small light and easy to travel with because of size. I think it's a very underrated lens. Enjoy the fisheye.

Your review was extremely helpful and well produced I might add. I'll probably get the 10.5 as I still have one crop sensor ( D500} camera and I see I could use the 16mm with my Z6 and FTZ without issue. Looks like you video was shot in Florida's west coast. I remember seeing the beautiful colorful trees on a trip to Naples and north to Sanibel. Just a guess.. Thanks again, I will subscribe. Ted in Sebastian, Fl.

What's happening Ted. I wish I was in Florida. Love that state specially miami beach and Clearwater. I'm based out of So Cal for now. I'm glad I can help with your selection of a Nikon fisheye lens. I've owned the 10.5 when I was shooting with the D2x D300 cameras. That will work. The D500 is an outstanding camera for action and wildlife. Whatever lens you go with congrats and have fun. Fisheye's are fun lenses to use. Tools for extreme creativity thats for sure. even for video clips. hehe. Good luck in your purchase. Thank you for the Sub. Happy to have you.

Great lens for that fisheye effect. Works great with most DSLRS with focus motors.

I follow you and enjoy your post. I have a Sigma 14mm 1.8 I would say they are about the same? But I wonder. Is there a comparison between this 16mm and the Sigma 14. I like to do night sky photography.

I have never used the Sigma so I can't comment, but I will say the 16mm fisheye is one heck of a lens. If you could find one at a great price. I would take it. AHh man,, this review brings back memories. Thanks for making me revisit this one.

Hello Tanmoy. Yes this fisheye will work fine. I would prefer it on a FX body like the D750 only because of full frame. getting the whole fisheye effect. On the D500 it will be cropped. I would get it for FF cameras. But both cameras will AF just fine.

3:45 should the filter be placed all the time? is it only colours filters? I just bought the lens while comparing to 8-15mm. I had already 10.5mm. I wanted to find away to fit polarizer filter to this one but not sure

yes the lens comes with 4 filters L37 UV filter to cut out haze and reduce the effects of UV light. O56 Orange, used for black and white photography. A2 Amber, used for correcting under some lighting conditions with daylight or tungsten films. B2 Blue for color correcting with daylight films. I have the L37 UV on and I dont used the other ones. However I'm not sure if you can order a polerizer or ND screw on filter for this lens, Have to find that out.

@@Vahagraphy only found 3 filters in box, i guess as the box wasn’t sealed someone took one! Using the lens without any filter is it ok?

No AF, it will mount and work with FTZ MF though.

Hi Swansong. This lens will mount on both the F3 and F4. as far as AF not on thr F3 but im assuming yes on the F4. I don't have this camera so I don't want to tell you something that is false. So I say with confidence that it will AF but from what I've heard from others with an F4. the Af is the first camera to have AF and the peromance will not be as good as lets say an AF-S lens. All that said, don't hold me to this, I hate giving out info on cameras I have not used. Searching the internet, im getting the exact same info.

Thank you Vahagraphy. I was concerned about the auto metering. On F3 and F4 with the Ai-s 105mm f/2.8. Not worried at all about AF. Not good with macro work as a rule anyway. It’s purely the exposure I wanted to know about.

hi, is this lens good to use it on a z6 or beter the samyang 14 2.8?

Hi Sotto. well given that both will be MF. Depends, the 14 is not a fisheye lens, so if your after that fisheye effect then this would be your choice. Nikon also makes a 14mm 2.8 prime. You might want to take a look at that one. Better resale value to and its a Nikon.

I want to buy this lens but my camera is a D7100 APSC, do you think I can use it with it?

AF will work on your camera. however you wont get that full fisheye 16mm effect because of the APSC sensor. that being said, you can still get it specially if its used at a good price and when you do upgrade one day to FX full frame. then you be ready to rock, If I were you I'd look into the 10.5mm DX fisheye nikon makes

Is AF really needed if its DOF at f/8 goes from 0,5 m to ∞?

Good question. I will have to run some more tests . I know when shooting this lens at the smallest aperture, stopped all the way down, as you saw on the samples the focus really didnt matter, haha, but let me play with thiis lens more and get back to you soon.
