I took my Nikon 200-500mm to a very popular birding location to see how it performed. It exceeded my expectations and then some.

Amazing how popular bird photography is where you live. I never see any other photographers when I go birding(Australia), which is sad as we have so many great species.

Oz Dutchy, I can't seem to reply to your comments directly. In my experience, The Nikon is much better than the Tamron 150-600 V1. I moved from that lens to the Nikon. I also tried the Tamron 150-600 v2 at the same time I tried the Nikon. The Nikon produced superior images right out of the box. I can't speak for the Sigma because I didn't try it. I can't say enough good things about the Nikon though. I think this lens will go down in history as the best zoom in that range for the price.

Love these shots, so sharp. I have a D750 but I'm torn between getting a Tamron 150-600 G2 and the Nikon 200-500. They both seem pretty awesome value but you might just be convincing me to get the Nikon :)

Great vid, awesome shots of the birds. I have had the D500 and nikon 200-500 combo for about a year and can't say enough on how great a setup they are. I live and work in Yellowstone and mostly photograph animals but occasionally birds too. Keep up the good work.

I am also enjoying your videos - and your commentary! Years ago I took a hawk course from Bud Anderson in Skagit County, Washington. That was back in the mid-90s, before all the great technology we have today. When I watch your videos and comments about bird and other wildlife behavior, I remember Bud telling us that video clips showing bird behavior was very valuable, and to share it. These days there is so much opportunity to share with the tech that we have. Thank you for sharing, and keep up the good work!

@MarkSmithphotography
@MarkSmithphotography 7 лет назад
Thanks! I also have the Tamron 150-600. It would occasionally lose all focus ability and have to be reseated in order to start working again. I went to a local store and tried the newer version and the Nikon. I couldn't believe the difference. I walked out with the Nikon.

Love these videos they will inspired even the novice photographer into going out and taking photos. Also the info on each photo gives an idea of how to take the photos. The explanation is simple without going into all the specs just camera and lens and with the right combination of these our photos should be as sharp. Thanks Mark for helping the photographer's World. Keep these videos going.

Mark Smith, if you ever get out to Michigan, drop out to Kensington Metropark. There is a rookery on an island and there's a boardwalk that allows photographers to get shots of the Great Blue Herons, Egrets, and Cormorants in the trees on the island. It's good and close where the 200-500 mm lens reaches them nicely. The song birds out on the trails will actually come up to you for sunflower seeds people give them as well. You would love this place. At the other side of the park, you can get Osprey as they are fishing and feeding their chicks. It's a birder's paradise. And yes, there are plenty of Sand Hill Cranes as well. If you ever want to go to that park and you want to find these hot spots there, let me know. Maybe my wife and I could give you the tour.

Thanks! The D500 is great and I am pretty certain it will work great with almost any lens. I have used several lenses on it. I have some lenses that I mostly use on my D810. I have used a 20mm, a 50mm, and a 90mm macro. They have all produced excellent results on the D500. The only problem is my sore back carrying all that gear around in a backpack!

Thinking about this combination and the more I watch your videos the more I'm being convinced to jump ship.Currently I have a Canon 7d mkii and the 300 f/4 prime but I'm not 100% happy with it, especially in lower light conditions. I am somewhat worried about the size of that lens for carrying around for long periods of time ? I was considering the Nikon 300 pf/4 prime. Any thoughts ?

Cool video. I told you that American Bittern was at Viera. I have been photographing that bird every March for 3 years. Sadly, Viera is changing as the palm trees die from the water. Where there were 10 Great Blue Heron nests there is now only 2-3. It just means you need to look a little closer. This was the first year I had both the D500 and 200mm-500mm. You are so right about them. Last year I had the 200-500 with the D7200 and they did a great job just not as good
@MarkSmithphotography
@MarkSmithphotography 7 лет назад
Thanks! You were 100% correct and I bet it was in the same location too. I think some of the palms are gone from hurricane Matthew. I know it was really close to Viera and a lot of great birding areas are now vacant as a result. There is one location in Vero that is almost leveled. All the trees are gone and it was a local hot spot for barred owls. They are now all gone.
@terrym45
@terrym45 7 лет назад
That bird is always in the same 20 feet of "reeds". The palms have been dying since it was built they just can't have their "feet" in water. Interesting about Matthew. Spend a lot of our time in FL in Vero. Sister in law has a business there. (Got a Dog?). The only damage I noted was at Ft DeSoto it just about ruined the area by cutting off the estuary and depositing a sandbar about 50 yards off shore and now the bird hangout there not on the accessible shoreline.
@MarkSmithphotography
@MarkSmithphotography 7 лет назад
This one was almost directly under a palm tree close to a cement pipe. There was a Heron's nest above the reeds. Yes, I do have a dog. What's the business? Have you been to the west vero waste water treatment area? I have a lot of good stuff from there as well.

Groomingdales, If you go in say hi to Lou he's her partner and runs the business now that she has semi-retired. Next Feb-March let's get together and go to the treatment area. Mark Smith: Cracking shots, they really showcase the D500/200 - 500mm f5.6 combination. Though a bit hefty, it is my favourite set up. I bought a gimbal for mine but find I still handhold most of the time. Have you tried out the D500 with the Nikkor 300mm f4 PF VR (+/- the Nikkor TC14EIII)? It is a beautifully lightweight combination which provides excellent IQ.

Mark, enjoy your videos and especially your conversational and informative style. Short and to the point -- image and tech data and most importantly the result. Question; why do you leave your D500 set to a -0.3 bias? I use same set up, D500 w/Nikon 200 - 500 and love it - sometimes with the 1.4 tele converter. I mostly shoot birds and wildlife. Thanks keep up the good work. Michael
@MarkSmithphotography
@MarkSmithphotography 7 лет назад
Thanks so much. I mainly use the -0.3 for white birds. It seems to capture more detail in the feathers for me and prevents blowing out the highlights. How do you like 1.4 converter? I am thinking about picking one up in the future.

Mark Smith I am a big fan of your video's. I own a Nikon D750. Since it's not a D500 could you give me some advise if it will work out with the 200-500mm? Your pictures are great!

Thanks so much for the great compliments. Yes, the 200-500 will work great on the D750. I have used it on my D810 without any issues. I just prefer it on the D500 for the speed and focus ability of the D500. I think the best investment with photography is always good glass or lenses. The 200-500mm is an excellent lens and in the future if you decided to add another camera body (perhaps the D500) to your arsenal, then you would already own the great piece of glass.

I bought the 200 - 500 Nikon - I use it with the D850. In some settings I keep getting err messages and the shutter speed goes to 8000 then focus stops. I wonder if anyone had similar issues.

Nice video Mark, I have the same combination and also very impressed with both the camera and the lens. I have noticed a slight bit of rotational slop with the lens and the camera mount. Was wondering if you have experienced the same. The quality of the images are not affected but I have this issue with no other lens but the 200-500

+TIM Schlarman Thanks and yes I have noticed that the lens seems to have a little bit of play where it connects to the body. I have noticed it most when I carry it for long periods with two hands. I support the lens with my left hand and the body with my right, almost like carrying a rifle. I can then notice the lens moves ever so slightly.

AWESOME shots and videos! Do you experience abnormal batt drain with your D500? My last outing with a D500 it completely drained out a fully charged Li20 batt in 4 hours. Very startling low batt compared to my current D7000
@MarkSmithphotography
@MarkSmithphotography 7 лет назад
Thanks! I'm not sure what abnormal battery drain is. I will usually kill at least one battery on a morning outing that lasts a few hours. I do use the back screen functions a lot. That might be what sucks up the battery power.

Thanks! Yes, these are all handheld. I have shot the Nikon 200-500 at 1/100 handheld with great results. I suggest trying both lenses. That's what I did. I liked the results of the Nikon much better.

Mark or anyone, I have a question about my D500 that is really bugging me. When I look at the review screen I have gotten myself into a screen with a very small picture and lots of info around it. I don't know how I got it into this setting and CERTAINLY don't know how to get out of it. Help.

Sir, its a great video. The images came out really razor sharp. I own a D7200 along with Nikkor 200-500mm lens. Is this a good combination for wild life/bird photography ? Also I would like to know about the focus modes, focussing points to be selected and metering modes as well for bird photography.
@MarkSmithphotography
@MarkSmithphotography 7 лет назад
I don't own a D7200 so I can't say but I would think this combo would be great for bird photography.

Mark Smith, can you please advise me regarding the focus modes, focussing points and metering modes essential for bird photography
@MarkSmithphotography
@MarkSmithphotography 7 лет назад
I AF-C and group focus. I will also use single point as necessary. I generally stick with matrix metering and use exposure compensation when necessary. It really all depends on the situation. There is on one setup that works at all times.

I am a canon guy going to Nikon either a d500 or a d850 with the 200-500mm Nikon tele . Great buy on the d500 now but the sensor is only 20mp compared to twice the size in the full frame d850. From your wonderful images the d500 looks great. Do you find the d850 with the larger sensor and this lens produce much better images than the d500 or is the extra sensor size ( same pixel density) not really that important. Do you really see a huge jump in detail in the typical image. Thanks ..love your videos Rick, Virginia
@MarkSmithphotography
@MarkSmithphotography 6 лет назад
I personally do see a bump in quality. You have a little more freedom to crop with the D850 but at the cost of a slower FPS. I've also noticed the D850 is a little slower to acquire and lock focus as well. I really like both cameras equally and will shoot them both all the time. There are times when I can't decide which camera body to use. I know that is a "tough" decision to have.
@MarkSmithphotography
@MarkSmithphotography 6 лет назад
Also, the D850 requires far more precision. The D500 is less forgiving in that sense and captures more keepers in my opinion.
@rickeyparker2222

Great shots, however, I found the background to be too distracting in that particular environment. For example, the shots of the birds catching fish. I didn't even notice the fish for several seconds in some of them because the fish blended into the background too much... They were fantastic shots otherwise... It's important to be cognizant of the background's effect on the subject... Maybe if you shifted your shooting angle lower to get more uniform sky in the background, or to use the water in the same way... Anyway, tricky environment I realize.
@MarkSmithphotography
@MarkSmithphotography 7 лет назад
Thanks for the input. I agree that backgrounds can take away from an image. In this area, there are a lot of very tall weeds in the water. In fact, right now the place is practically over grown with plant life. Some of the areas in this video are sitting under 6-8 foot of growth. It is amazing how much things have changed. But yes you are 100% correct. Perhaps next spring I can try some lower angle shots if the water moccasins are too prevalent.
@rlwings
@rlwings 7 лет назад
Ya, that's often a problem in areas with a lot of growth... Sorry if I came across as judgy or as a know it all, lol... It's just that your shots were so awesome that it was a shame (only in a couple) that the background was so prominent... This has happened to me too...So frustrating! ... BTW, I just purchased the Nikon 200-500 VR lens and man what piece of glass! My wildlife photography just took off to new levels. (Which is why I sought out your RU-vid channel in the first place),,, Thanks for all your efforts in putting together all these videos for us to watch and learn from. Your experience if valuable to many, I'm sure. :)
@MarkSmithphotography
@MarkSmithphotography 7 лет назад
It didn't come across that way at all. I appreciate the input and would agree with you on the backgrounds taking away from the real stars of the images. It is funny too that you brought it up because I am working on a book on bird photography and I just finished the section on distracting backgrounds. Good to know you are impressed with the 200-500. I think it is exceptional and far superior to my Tamron 150-600 v1. I have even managed to get some decent macro shots with it. Thanks for watching the videos and contributing your input. Every little bit helps others who might be reading the comments.
