I own both (plus the 85mm 1.8). For general photography, the 35mm is a better option (due to its wider focal length). However, when it comes to taking portraits, they’re not even close. Both the 50mm and 85mm are FAR superior to the 35mm.

for medium to med/long distance portraits you are correct, but for close ups with an APS-C camera, the 50mm and 85mm distort the face too much. 35mm on an APS-C does not because it translates to a 'normal' focal length. So don't throw the 35mm away just yet :)

I own both... Call me call me crazy but the 50 gives way better pictures. Just my opinion. Yes, focal length can be an issue depending on photos, but I always keep the 50 on unless Im too close. So contrary to his opinion, 50 is my main, 35 is MY backup

35mm 1.8G DX was my starter lens when I first got my D7100. I used it for both photos and video. Super smooth bokeh and great depth of field on APS-C. Also renders with great contrast, color and sharpness for such a great price.

Look at the scene in front of you. Then raise your camera and look at the scene through the viewfinder. If the scene looks the same size through the viewfinder as what you see without, then we can say that your lens/sensor combination produces an equivalent 50mm focal length. That is why 50mm lens are called 'normal' focal length lenses. It is the perfect focal length if you had to choose just one prime focus lens because it mimics what we see through our own eyes. Now, to achieve 50mm focal length with an APS-C camera, we need to use a 35mm lens. The 1.5 crop factor multiplies the 35mm by 1.5 times. (ok, to 52.5mm but close enough). If you are shooting with a full frame DSLR or a 35MM film camera, then a 50mm prime lens is what you need to achieve that 'normal' 50mm focal length focal length. Of course, you may prefer the small telephoto effect of shooting with a 50mm lens on an APS-C camera and that's fine too, but you can learn a lot and develop your skills hugely as a photographer by shooting 50mm focal length ..such as the reviewed 35mm f/1.8 lend here fitted to an APS-C camera. I hope that makes sense.

"super tight" when you are very close to the camera. You can just put your tripod further away. Prime lens have sharper image and great in low light because of low F stop number. Also 35mm lens its going to look like 50mm lens on crop sensor which is your D5200 or other camera.

An update to this on going discussion! , I have NIKON D7000 I purchased 35MM. It only comes in DX type that means it will give you exact 35MM outcome , where if you talk about 50 mm then it is not DX lens , hence It will give you ~75 mm outcome. I got this clear after looking at box of each lenses where 35 mm does say DX but 50 mm does not. I believe everyone having crop sensor should go for 35 mm as it gives you desired result , you can crop the frame after clicking and get the 50MM result. Trust me go for 35 mm not 50. If any one interested i can show u sample images i took. Leave a comment

actually, the 35mm is for Apsc while 50mm is for full frame. when you multiply 35 to 1.5 you get around 50s, that's where you get apsc equivalent on full frame. because full frame is like 1:1 while apsc 1:1.5 (nikon) so when you try to find full frame equivalent for 70mm on apsc, you divide 70 by 1.5 its around 46 and the closest lens is 50mm or 55mm. basically, when you use 50mm lens on apsc, your picture will look like when you use 70mm on full frame

Hi there....I am planning to get a Nikon D500 which is a DX camera... I am confused about getting a lens..that will suit all kinds of photography landscape, portrait etc with a good creamy bokeh. I had initially planned on getting a 50mm 1.8g lens but then later found out that it isn't the same for a crop sensor so I later resorted to 35mm 1.8. But again fount out that there is both 35mm DX And FX lens. So could you help me with this ? Which will be the best for my requirement ? Thanks

They perform about the same, get dx for the d500 or fx if you plan to upgrade to FF

Great Video! I use a Nikon D5300 and have a Tokina 11-16 DXii F2.8(for Landscape) and would want to replace my Kit lens Nikon 18-55 VR2. I have ordered a Tamron 70-200 F2.8 G2 recently (for almost everything but mostly for outdoors). Would want to cover the gap between the 16-69mm. Having a hard time choosing between the Nikon 35mm 1.8G or the Sigma 17-50 F2.8 OS for a standard Lens in my kit. Is it a must to have a prime lens? I don't do much video work but mostly photography as a hobby. Can't purchase both since I broke my bank purchasing the 70-200 :( Any advice would be much appreciated! Thank you very much for your time :)

Personally I have owned the 35 mm 1.8 and the 50mm 1.8, the sigma 17-50 2.8 and sigma art 18-35 1.8g, the sigma 17-50 is fantastic for all around. I would be happy with that as my walk around lens!

I would say with prime lens and photography, your pictures are going to have more of a style. When I used zoom (kit lens) all of them were different, but with prime it is more of a harmonious look when you look at all pictures, personally I love 35mm 1.8g(nikon), even self portraits are beautiful, you do not have to have your camera that far from you, but you still need a tripod for self portraits. But but prime lens you have to use your legs as zoom, that is not a problem with me. I wished I had money for 35mm 1.4 or 1.2, but 1.8 is great too, much better than kit lens. If you have the money, get it, it is not heavy, but before you decide, google the images that are shoot with 35mm 1.8g, and see if you like it.
