Nice job. From me who has spent more time studying the Nikon 35Ti, let me offer a few more points; The 35mm 2.8 lenses are not only similar, they are very probably identical. The lens is one commonly used by Nikon on several of their other, more substantial cameras, and it is very good - professional quality. The focusing systems: they are both active infrared systems and work the same way. The 35Ti has a more modern version which probably uses more focus points, so is likely to be more accurate, but the difference is probably unimportant. His issue with focus failure on the 35Ti is likely to be, in my experience, a user error, not the camera. The focus spot in the finder is very precise, and it is easy to intend to focus on a subject but accidentally put the spot on something at a different distance. The metering: The L35AF uses a traditional center-weighted system, common to most cameras of its era. The 35Ti uses Nikon's computerized matrix metering system, which Nikon invented in the early 1980s. It is extremely accurate and can resolve a correct exposure in even the most damning situations. That said, the functional difference for a P-n-S camera is almost nill. The 35Ti has a vast list of user customizing functions, but they are buried in multi=layer menus, behind (as he noted) one of the most user-unfriendly systems ever put on a camera - they never get used. I share his conclusion: buy a L35AF; buy two of 'em and put one away for when the first breaks down. (They say there is no crying in baseball. Well, there are no repairs for these puppies.) So. did I put my money where my mouth is? Not exactly. 25 years ago I bought a 35Ti and a Contax T2. I shot 'em for a month, ran lens resolution test charts (very nerdy) - the works. Then I kept the Contax (which I still have), sold the Nikon 35Ti. Why that choice? The Contax T2 is just an easy camera to use, and the 35Ti is an ergonomic whore. And I'm no Nikon hater. My entire (and vast) assembly of 35mm SLR equipment is Nikon, and I started out assuming that the 35Ti was "it"..

Nice review. I’ve just recently acquired a Nikon 35Ti, do you know if it shares common failure parts with other cameras? Eg, the focus motor, film cycle motor, etc

2 additional great features of the L35AF: the filter thread (where you in fact had mounted the hood) and the manual ISO adjuster up to 1000iso. Mounting filters, especially in bw is crucial, and pushing or pulling a film speed is also very useful.

The first L35AF cameras produced had a max ISO of 400, the later model had a max ISO of 1000.

Great video - great cameras. The L35AF was an advanced and expensive compact camera when new in the mid 80s. One thing to add is that the camera doesn't wind until you take your finger off the shutter having taken a photo, makes it even more stealthy. It is (for now) a great value camera!

Thanks for the video Patrick. Really well done. I am in the process of trying to find a point and shoot as part of my every day carry and this video is super helpful. I would love to carry a Contax T2 with me everywhere, but it just doesn’t make sense at the price it takes to get into one. So that said, I have been looking seriously at the Nikon L35 AF and your video is certainly helpful. As a new subscriber, I hope to see more videos from you in the future.

I don't believe that you mentioned that you can use 46mm filters or step up from 46 to whatever filters. Also, the 2 stop backlight compensation switch I believe wasn't mentioned, which is very nice to have and works great ! I have 4 of these and obviously love them ! LarryMac

For me, price is a huge concern. The fact that the L35AF is typically 1/10th the price of the 35Ti, is a huge plus. The collectability of the 35Ti make it an unreachable option for many on tight budgets or who are only occasional film photographers.

nice comparison between the two cameras. just because of the price I would rather take the 35AF 😀 Costs less does what it should.

Great video.... but, the L35AF film door and internal frame of the camera are made of metal. I really like how it shows you what focus distance the AF will choose. The L35AF lens also has such a great look to it in portrait distances. Btw, the battery door came in two versions, one with a metal protruding locking lip, and the other (which you might have) is a more flimsy plastic lip version.
@PatrickStromme
@PatrickStromme 3 года назад
Thanks for the info! Yeah I definitely have the plastic one. Unfortunately for the plastic one I’ve read all over this is a common issue.
@JP1050x
@JP1050x 3 года назад
@@PatrickStromme yep, for the plastic battery door, the common fix is to wedge something in the gap/slot between the opposite side of the door and the body. Tape works too, but it’s just not as pretty.

Thanks! I have not, but I have shot the Olympus MJU, MJUii, and the Yashica T4. I still prefer the Nikon L35AF over all of them. Just really like the vibe of this camera.

Yes I did, with the Contax T2. I prefer the Nikon. Better ergonomic, better and faster autofocus, possibility to chose the ISO (you can push the film) possibility to install filters and hood. Moreover you can not tell the difference in terms of quality of the pictures. I ended selling the T2, which in my opinion it's a way overrated camera, like the T3.

I've already lost my L35 battery door 😭😭 Do you have any tips? I really love that camera, its a sentimental piece that used to be my mom's when she was in college then she gave it to me when i went to college.

Maybe consult with a 3d printing lab to see if they could make you a replacement? you would have to make sure the contacts can be attached.

Another thought is to fashion a conductive plate to connect the bottom ends of the batteries together and taping it (and the batteries) in place. Probably use electrical tape.

I would like you to do another video using the zone focusing with the 35 Ti. I would think that for shooting street that would be the way to go.
@PatrickStromme
@PatrickStromme 3 года назад
I’ve since unfortunately sold the Ti. I just didn’t vibe with it much. Plus it was too hard for me to justify. I prefer cheaper point and shoots. Less pressure to take them with me to shady places and I’m willing to take more risks with them. If I still had the camera, I’d be down though. You’re probably right!
