I now understand why photographers have two or more cameras. There is no all in one. Some will just be better at certain things than others.

at entry level maybe. More advanced cameras really do have a huge range of features. unfortunately a lot of these entry level ones are intentionally limited , particularly the D3000 series in my opinion.

No, they have two cameras, but usually are identical, but with different prime lenses because they can't afford changing lenses in a photo shoot. Having two different cameras makes you slower

Both are great cameras. If you're on a budget and looking for a good beginner camera, Nikon does the job well. If you are getting into mid-level and professional photography, Canon are definitely the most recommended. But it all depends on what you're looking for in a camera and what suits your needs most, imo. Great video, thanks for sharing.

Yes absolutely possible, however with a lower frame rate your timing will have to be spot on as there is less room for error. Here is a link to a video I put together about sports photography : ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-kai_uHItyI0.html

Hi Paul,,, that was a brillient and informative review,,, Im a canon user myself,,, but loved Nikon from an early age. especilly the film cameras,,, (showing my age now) just on one point,,, you mentioned about the size and weight of the cameras,,, and the Nikon being the smaller and lighter,,, Over my long years in photography,,, especilly with the women photographers, ive known and come into contact with all say that the more professional type cameras are to big and heavy for them,,, so they all go for the smaller lighter models available,,, even bridge cameras in some cases, just because of the weight,,, I dont know if you have many women in your subscribers or on your courses as it might be more of an issue to them,,, especilly if they are more on the petite side,,, (just a thought). Great review tho, Cheers

May I ask, as a former film photographer stuck now with an iPhone and no decent computer, but preferring the Nikon here, how does one get the photos off the thing? Can you bluetooth them to your phone? To google photos? How? I would buy tonight if I could clear this mystery up.

My suggestion would be: think well before buying your first (proper / decent / you name it) camera. Once you have done it you are into a system. My choice was Nikon (their lens in what concerns range/choice and price/spec was the deciding factor - we tend to swap cameras but keep the lenses up to a degree obliviously) many years ago and likely I'll die whilst using Nikon gear. I would love to have a top range Hasselblad or a Leica but their enormous cost will make sure such will never happen! My other systems: peerless Apple for most IT hardware / software related and Porsche car wise: if you are into mechanics and can do stuff Porsche and its specialists offer a world of parts and running gear like no other car brand can.

Nikon D3500 owner, bought as a hobbyist and now moving into professional work (where we shoot w/ Canon 5Ds), I'll share my thoughts. I love my camera, if I were to start over again I might actually have purchased a used 3300 or 3400 instead and spent the money I saved on an extra lens. The lack of external remote for the 3500 means that I've had to use the painfully slow and underwhelming smartphone app for timed shots or self portraits. The 3300 actually has the port to hook up an external intervalometer, and I would have loved the opportunity to do timelapse photography. The more I learned my camera the more I longed for a dedicated iso button (although when shooting wildlife I actually prefer shooting manual with auto-iso enabled). I plan on upgrading to an older full-frame d750 and if you're purchasing a camera with the idea of maybe using it professionally I highly recommend saving up for full frame that has all the bells and whistles. Features to look for: Built-in Timelapse options, because why not, compatibility with with external remotes, AEB (automatic exposure bracketing) which is great for doing some real-estate work on the side, A Dedicated ISO button, Back-Button AF, and >5+ FPS for action and wildlife photography
@photogenius
@photogenius 2 года назад
I love the D3500 but agree that it was a mistake by Nikon to remove some of the features like the Fn (ISO) button and the ability to use the wireless remote. The D750 is a great camera and there are some great second hand deals around as people are selling them to go mirrorless. Thanks for watching. Paul.

Canon Rebel T7 and Nikon D3500 are two professional cameras combine with quality features. And if you want to pick the best one, then we recommend you the Nikon D3500. Why Do We Recommend The Nikon D3500? (1) Nikon D3500’s maximum ISO range is 25600, and Canon Rebel T7’s maximum ISO range is 12800. The higher ISO range will help you to capture perfect and detailed photos even in low lights. (2) This camera has a powerful battery (EN-EL14a Li-Ion Battery), so you can capture approximately 1550 frames by charging it once. Besides, with T7 (LP-E10 x 1 Li-ion Battery), you can capture only 600 frames. (3) Nikon D3500 has active D-lightning which will optimize high contrast images and make sure you get the shadow and highlight detailed images every time. But this feature is not available in T7. (4) The autofocus of this camera is 11 points and T7 has 9 autofocus points. So, D3500 is going to help you to focus on a particular object better than the T7. (5) The continuous shooting speed of D3500 is 5 frames per second whereas T7’s continuous shooting speed is 3 frames. D3500 will help to capture fast-moving objects like cars, birds more accurately than the T7. (6) The image sensor size of the Nikon D3500 is 23.5 mm x 15.6 mm and T7’s image sensor size is 22.3mm x 14.9 mm. With a bigger image sensor size, D3500 will ensure better low-light performance and low noise images. (7) This camera is a built-in microphone, which will make the video recording with sounds easier for you. But there are no microphones in T7. (8) With this camera, you can transfer your files faster as this camera has a USB 3.0 interface. On the other hand, T7 has a USB 2.0 interface. (9) Nikon D3500’s weight is 365 grams and Canon Rebel T7’s weight is 427grams. The lightweight D3500 will help you to capture stabilized photos. Nikon D3500 would be a perfect camera for you since it has high-end features, so we suggest you pick this one. Read more at {[Canon T7 vs Nikon D3500 Comparison][cameraslab.com/canon-t7-vs-nikon-d3500/]}

Hi Paul, I have the canon 550d from 2010. Just getting back into photography. Is that still a good camera to start with still. I also have the Sony alpha 6000. Both cameras have the kit lens. Let me know your thoughts. Cheers Steve
@julmaass
@julmaass 3 года назад
Hi Steve, I have the A6000, it has a really good sensor, great in low-light, much better than the Canon 550d. It depends what type of photography you want to do, and what lenses. Nikon/Canon DSLRs have more lens ( i recommend choosing a camera based on the lenses you need). The canon you have is decent in good light, but will not do well in dimmer light, sensors have improved a lot since the 550d. Sony Alpha series have a limited choice of lenses, but I recommend the following in order of preference: the sony 35mm f1.8 (a good standard walk around prime lens, its the classic nifty 50), the Samyang 12mm F2.0 for ultrawide, the zeiss 16-70 f4 is excellent but expensive, and the sony 55-200 if you need more reach. I'm moving on from A6000 because I want more choise and going for Nikon because i've done my research and found lenses i think would work for me better than sony, I also prefer better Autofocus of modern SLRs. I don't know that much about Canon , but if i liked portraits and good colour straight out of camera , then a more modern Canon is a great choice. If you're not sure, don't stay stuck at home. The A6000 is an excellent camera especially with the kit lens, it's also pocket size, so no excuse for leaving at home.

Great info, cheers. I want the WiFi of the canon and the snappy 5fps option of the Nikon and the faster focus of the Nikon too. (Fussy bugger that I am). For a similar cost what camera would you recommend? Thanks.

In my area of the US I can get the Cannon for $399 vs the Nikon at $499. Does that tilt the scale in favor of the Cannon in your opinion? Thank you for the excellent review! I’m recently retired and going to start photography as a hobby.

$100 is a significant saving, so I would go for the Canon. Maybe put the money you have saved toward a tripod 🙂 Thanks for watching 👍

Hello from Canada. Excellent photography site one of the best very helpful and interesting for non professionals. This particular episode was crutial in assisting me with evaluating these two cameras. In fact the camera I was most interested in ended up not having the two most important features I was looking for. Thanks for the assistance.

Excellent review as I’m buying one of these for my wife who is a “newbie”. They’re both good cameras, and especially for the price point. Think I’m going Nikon but Canon is a great choice as well.

Another informative video from you Paul. But what I like best? That you don't come down on one side or the other. You give pluses and minuses and leave us to make our minds up. I am looking to upgrade my old Nikon D3200 so this has been useful. I will stick with Nikon as I have a few Nikkor lenses. But without the ability to attach my intervelometer, it would make my night time shots just a bit too difficult. Have to look further up the line I guess.

Hi Paul, thanks for this video I was never sure if I had made the right decision buying the D3500 but you have put my mind at rest explaining how the D3500 has good continuous mode etc which is better then the T7i which is important to the photography I do thanks for explaining this I couldn’t find a better comparison on these cameras anywhere else so big thanks, I also really enjoyed this video thank you for making this! Stay safe and have a nice weekend :D

Thanks for clarity. I think that I may take this info to decide what I really need in a camera. I think ide rather spend more than these entry level cameras if I can find one in a suitable price range. Like you said, pick a camera that you can move into in the near future. Even though I feel that both of these cameras would be good for portrait and landscape with the correct lense, I feel like it might be a better use of $ to buy a camera that can film moving and still images and that has the ability for an external mic. It's difficult to chose between these two cameras. I think I need to look fir one that is well suited for my needs.

Either have pros and conses but Nikon seems overall more comparable to sl3. This Canon shouldn't be used trough lv at all which is shame since it's begginers camera. But i like wifi and IQ seems to be little better on that t7.

i tinkered a bit on a Canon 500D of a Friend of mine, then bought myself a Nikon D90 with wsame Kit Lens, have to say was bit Envious at my sisters 18 to 120mm which is real nice range learned Shooting for real on D90 love the status iso monitor on top, wouldnt like to miss it but sensor is just plain to old. upgraded to a NIkon D750 and the Quality of stills is wow especially lovly bokeh wit Yongnuo 50mm F1.4 its actually a nice all rounder imho Tend to get the Tokina 80 to 200mm F2.8 Pro or a Tamron 70 to 300mm f4-f5.6 VR what would be the bedder?
@photogenius
@photogenius 2 года назад
Hi Georg, The D750 is a great camera 👍 Regarding lenses, I have not done any testing of the Tokina 80-200mm F2.8 or Tamron 70 to 300mm f4-f5.6 VR so my comments are not based on actual testing. I would research them both carefully and choose the lens to best suit your subject. The Tokina gets some good reviews, however the AF is apperently slow - so, great for low light (f2.8), but maybe not the best option for sports, wildlife and moving subjects. The Tamron offers a better focal range, however I have read that the sharpness is not so great from 200mm upwards.

Thank you, Paul, for another great video! One question, any idea why Canon always labels the same camera model with different names? It has been like that as far as I can remember, at least with DSLRs.
