Been wanting this camera for a year. So I saved my gigging money I get as a drummer in a band and just yesterday got the body and kit lens. Can't wait to get out there and create with it. Big step up from my 10 year old Fuji S2. And Canon G11. The world of video is all new to me. Must learn. Been following Chase's blog for a year. Cool, informative, guy.
So Jarvis, tell Nikon to give you more free things because this video convinced me to buy that camera. You are the best advertiser they have ;). But really, amazing videos I always love watching content you produce.
I agree with you guys, this is some amazing work and it convinced me to buy my D7100, but don't forget the lens you use makes quite a big difference. I use a Nikkor 18-200 mm lens and I can't complain about it's quality, it's a great all-round lens for DX cameras, but nowhere near as good as the Nikon pro lenses. Now guess what lenses Chase used? If you look at the video, you'll notice every lens used by Chase costs more than a new D7100... I wish I could shoot with one of these lenses but I guess I'll have to save up some money :) Anyway, kudos to Chase, this is some amazing work and I must confess I watched this video a few times because it's just awesome. But keep in mind you need some glass but most importantly some great vision to produce something like this.
made me want to buy the D7000 9 years ago, but by the time i had money i ended up buying other cameras 🙃still this video makes me feel happy and nostalgic ☺️
this was a great promo for the D7000. I'm glad i found it, and Chase, bro you helped me make up my mind on this dslr (my first dslr ever!!!) Thanks Chief!
Ok, what everybody can see from this "making-of" is that it is not only the camera which makes a good result but of course the creativity , knowledge and skills of a photographer! If you checked the movie first you can may now discover how much effort it takes... Thanks for sharing this educational stuff :)
I love this camera. I just finished a video from Perito Moreno Glacier in Pategonia and it captured it beautifully. Quite steady hand held with a wide angle lens too!
I went from the Nikon D3000 to the D3100 (yeah I know, didn't jump to mid level) but now that I've used the D7000, I'm definitely going to get it. Keep my D3100 as a secondary camera and D7000 as my primary. Damn.. this vid reminds me of California. Need to head back out there soon!
@bollwerkman the photo slide show at the end of the video is made of images that have been photoshopped. We shoot our stills in RAW with very neutral settings and then work them up in post. You can see unaltered files here in the updated version of Chase Jarvis' blog post. 6400 is the point where the quality starts to suffer a bit, but it's all relative depending on your needs.
@strikefishingman Yep, we always use Z-Finders when shooting video. We have a couple of them (the previous generation 3.0x and the new Pro 2.5x) and absolutely love them. The steady cam at 1:50 is a Steadicam Merlin.
@ICEx03 - A bigger CMOS sensor mostly. I love the film-like look of this video but it's easier to transport and use a small HD camcorder that still does quite a decent job. And costs less than this camera.
Truly amazing! I love the picture style of all the pics in this video and well allot of others you have taken :D! Would be appreciated so much if you could give a few photoshop tips on how you make them look like they do!
@hugmeshootme Most of the video was shot with the Nikon 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6, mainly because it was a run 'n' gun style shoot and this lens has a broad focal length range and a nice vibration reducer. The nighttime stuff was shot mostly with fast prime lenses, in particular the 24mm f/1.4G and the 35mm f/1.8.
@calikalinfo - I think both can do a great job and it comes down to features. I have tried the Nikon, it does really well at higher ISO. The Canon may have other advantages.
@achaser123 That's fantastic news, I wasn't sure because it didn't look to have the same rolling shutter problems of the D90. Thanks for putting it through it's paces!
Anyone else note the skewing at 2:23 on the sunset power-poles pan shot? Other than that, this is one hell of a camera. Now, unless the 7Dmk2 comes out soon, looks like I'll be grabbing a D7000.
Was this all shot on the Nikon D7000? That's what I wanna know. If so, it's a damn good ad for Nikon. Looks amazing, and I hope they're paying you. (Would love to know how much of this was color corrected in post)
I was able to get get my hands on a D7000 a few days ago and I must say Im not as thrilled as everyone is saying. The new AF system has really been hit or miss. Kids at the beach running in water had a lower percentage of clarity than using an old Sony a300 with a comparable lens. I honestly might return it and step up to a Canon 7D...much more semi-pro feeling. While Nikon blurred the lines on semi pro/high end as well as the price point Im feeling a little out there now :(
I have had one of those nikkor 35 but I gave it away! I see that some of national geographics photographers use 35 but thats on full frame sensors so its probably wider than our aps-c cameras!
I've been following Chase for some time. He's amazing! Just look at the photos at the end of this video. It looks like so much fun but hot, hot, hot! Thanks Chase...
Well both are due for an update (7D more so) but I would say the 7D is the more capable video camera. Also depends on what lens system you want and your uses..
Remote controlled chopper as a Camera stand ... Genius! Loved your work and Loved the camera too, for 1200 dollars it's a bargain with 6fps shooting and 100% viewfinder, not to mention the new 39 point AF system. looking at these new Nikon camera, I 've become a fan of Nikon :)
@emilrocklov be warned, the 550D is a very small dslr,if this is your first slr go with the canon 60D,its a good size camera, and it fits in with the 550D and the 7D,its in between them
Wonder how the stills near the end were made to look they way they do. Sort of golden - Very Vivid - wonder if that's post-processing or a picture style on camera? Amazing video!
You make be right , But I haven't done the reserch on that camera yet. I currently own a Canon Xh A1S and I'm trying to master that. So many do's and don'ts with it, in order to get good results. But that is the photographer or videographers job. To be able to get the full Potential from of his or her equiptment. I will look into the Canon 60D soon, to see if it has auto focus in video mode. Thanks
@DCuerpoJr i have a D7000 and i can tell you that it KEEPS on impressing me....this is NOT a redo of the D90 .....this is a new animal all together!...i just LOVE LOVE my camera!
@yesterdaysguy I realized after i never really told you why it's better and based on your comment you won't bother to go do your own due diligence so...... It has the new Expeed 2 Imaging processor which improves speed of shots(6 FPS) noisereduction and image quality (even more important in the DX cameras). It does 100 to 6400 ISO and is extendable up to 25600 (the upper end you would use especially for low light . Also the metering system in this camera is way beyond anything in the t2i....
@limogerry Yes, it does pick up focussing noise, very prominently. You can get external mikes pretty easily though. No point taking HD video if you don't have good sound!
@wadwadthenugget you my friend, are entering the world of HDSLR..nikon wanted to make an indy filmaker camera and they did which is the D7000,thats why it was used for these short movie clips
i know u meant to ask Chase, but your answer is totally dependent of what you are planning to do with your camera, 7D is a much much better choice for Video as the 60fps in 720p and drop frame timing in 1080p would allow you to use after market software to achieve a 1000fps for slow moving subjects with great smoothness and quality, in my opinion they are not the same class of camera, if you are undecided between the two, go for the 7D, but i would get a 5D II for the $ u pay
@pwinowski totally agree. In fact, the camera is probably the weakest link in the chain when it comes to this video. You could make the exact same thing with a D3100. The quality of this movie is from the Steadicam mount, sliders, track rigging, tens of thousands in lenses (I saw at least one of the fixed 2.8 teles), and Nikon's advertising budget allowing Chase and friends to play all day in perfect natural light.
@limogerry ..I was worried about that too..haven't bought one yet, but if you're shooting video for audiences, maybe consider getting an external mike...the d7000 has connections for a stereo one....or just reecord the audio separately..I was going to try using the zoom stereo recorder.
The stills at the end... I'm assuming the color was tweaked in Photoshop? The colors are amazing, obviously. I was curious about the settings; whether or not it's possible to do these in-camera. (Love the pic of the girl standing with the sunset, the blues and greens with the orange key light.)
@forumpaul Not sure how you can say that as there are so many settings available. You dont like the colors, adjust the settings. Some go for the dialed back chroma look.
@alawackbar1 They are using manual focus, and external mic. That's why the focus in this video is great, and why you can't hear any focus noise. And you can control your depth of field on a dslr.. I really don't get what you're on about here mate...
you can't say wich lens is the best, it depends on wich kind of photography do yo do. it's full frame so the most versatile it's an open wide 50mm, like f/1.2
Just to be clear, all of the footage in this vid (how it starts, desert shots later on etc) is shot with a D7000? I'm asking because I'm verging on getting one, and the footage outwith the short that you made also impressed me greatly.
