I was shooting for a fundraiser for The American Cancer Society and needed a DSLR. As a decades long Nikon user, I had the lenses and the then new D90 looked to be a good body choice. A lot of years later, the camera still does what I need and I have never replaced itl

I agree I think the lesson here is "good enough", use what works for you. It's still a decent camera and very usable today. I always find it amusing to read some people who convince themselves they "must upgrade", and "can't look back" at older gear, yet spend a small fortune on new mirrorless cameras which makes little difference to the end result. I still like using the D90 even to this day

I still have mine and although I don't use it much these days I am not willing to part with it. Me and my D90 have had too many adventures for me to want to give it up. For photography I would recommend it over the 3000 & 5000 series cameras any day. Having used its big bother the D300, I always seemed to get slightly better results with the D90 unless I was shooting action.

I think the sensor was slightly different, a bit better in low light being newer. Either way the D90 is still far from obsolete, in terms of the output and usability. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this

I have the N90 and D90. It's a very good camera. The best part of owning this is that most of my N90 lenses work with the D90. I was recently looking at used lenses and the prices have skyrocketed.
@MrBazReviews

On lenses it depends on the lens in question, some are still quite good value. It's also worth thinking about third party ones too, I've seen some good deals around on Sigma/Tamron/Tokina lenses at times. Ebay isn't always the best place, some listings are unrealistic with prices on lenses - they sit there and never sell the items. Dig around a bit and you can get deals I paid 500 euro for an 11-16mm Tokina 6 years ago, I see them selling for under 250 in places. 35mm 1.8 is cheap, the 50mm 1.8 are too. I have more third party lenses then I do Nikon ones

Very nice review. I just bought a used d90 in excellent condition and really like it. I find the viewfinder much better than the d3000 and d5000 series with a much more professional feel. Even though the 12 mp is modest by today’s standards this is deceiving because the signal noise, dynamic tonal and color range rival some later models including the d5100 and d5300. This is from my review of dxo measurements. A great bargain for photos not video. Highly recommended.
@MrBazReviews
@MrBazReviews Год назад
The viewfinder is much better, larger and brighter thanks to being a Pentrprism, v Mirror. You can still do quite a bit with 12mp, the overall sensor performance is quite good. It's very affordable too, I still like the D90 quite a bit - glad you like it too.

This camera was the reason I went with Nikon instead of Canon. It was either this, 40d, 50d or 60d & imho, this had the IQ. I liked the build as well. Although plastic, it was well put together & well finished. The AF system was very good, although only 11 points. Which is why I regretted choosing Nikon for what they did with the 'replacement' of the D90. Yes, I ended up selling my D90 & got a D7000. The sensor was a huge step up & the high ISO performance was slightly better. I appreciated the extras in the D7000. But that damn AF system felt like five steps back. It was unreliable & my keeper rate actually dropped going from the D90 to the D7000. Then there was the build. On paper, the D7000 was supposedly better than the D90, but my D90 held up way better than the D7000. The finish was terrible. Imagine if Nikon took the D300 & placed the D7000 sensor in that, releasing a D400 instead of the D300s copout. And then we wonder why they dropped to number 3 & Sony overtook them.

@MrBazReviews 11 месяцев назад
Very interesting! I liked the build of the Canon's very solid, but their sensors started to lag behind. It's funny you should mention the D7000, I bought 3 of them all 3 had truly awful inconsistent focus. Well beyond any fine tune adjustment, it drove me up the wall. I returned 2, got one serviced twice to try to fix the focus problems, I was never happy with it. What good were 39 AF points if they missed so often? So I wasn't unhappy with the D90's 11 points, at least it hit the target, and the D90 metering was better too, D7000 would over expose at times. I was thinking of trying another D7000 just for fun off MPB or something, to see if the AF on any bodies is acceptable. I never liked the D7000 grip either too straight it wasn't as comfortable as the D90. The lesson here was on paper the D7000 has a lot of improvements, but the reality was quite frustrating. To this day the D7000 remains one of the biggest disappointments for cameras I have used. Strangely there were plenty of D7000 AF problem deniers, and it was clearly a very serious issue. Nikon messed up delaying the D500 for so long, most would agree there.
@alwynsmit3546
@alwynsmit3546 11 месяцев назад
@@MrBazReviews I feel your pain. I had 4 different units & Nikon kept denying that there was an issue. Typical of Nikon though. We all saw how they handled the D600 fiasco. First made out as if it was a normal dust issue, then just an oil splatter. Even with the internet blowing up, I asked a local Nikon staff member about it & get this... They said they haven't heard of the issue or any complaints. Eventually they were forced to deal with it & found it was the mirror assembly, yet still tried to brush it off as normal oil splatter. I wish I knew what Nikon was like when I started out. I would rather have put up with Canon's sensors.
@MrBazReviews
@MrBazReviews 11 месяцев назад
@@alwynsmit3546 At the time the D7000 issue was so serious and annoying, I gave up on Nikon and sold my gear off. That's how frustrating it became, even after multiple service trips the AF was all over the place, completely unreliable. Even old DSLR's I had blew it away for accuracy. Nikon's service didn't admit to the problems, yet if you look around there are huge number of complaints about the problem. I will say Nikon had more issues than most makers, the D600 oil splat as you say, they had D800 issues, D750 problems too, and now 2 recall notices for the Z8 (not a fan of the plastic body take either not at that price) I did manage to get a great D800 (no issues later production ones on AF been reliable), and the D780, which is good for video (but sadly poor firmware support from Nikon) I have to use something! But I'm not blown away with the Z mount stuff, so I'll hang with what I have on F Mount. Canon can be good in some ways, I just find their ergonomics but layout not as good as it should be. Button based, Canon hate dials and switches (mostly). I use the drive dial on the D800/780 all the time. And on the R5/6 who would think about making a camera without ISO, WB and drive direct controls? Crazy you have to program that or use the M-fn button!

@@MrBazReviews agreed. I've gotten used to shooting Nikon, but can equally be at home shooting Canon. Unfortunately it's expensive changing brands, which is the only reason I'm still using Nikon.
@MrBazReviews
@MrBazReviews 11 месяцев назад
@@alwynsmit3546 It can be expensive, depends on the set up. I ditched Sony after they abandoned A mount (silently!) It wasn't too bad as I had a ton of stuff, and it all adds up. If you get used gear you can save a lot, and it's not too hard to switch, without a huge hit. Anyone thinking of selling up an going mirrorless, with native lenses, is looking at a very expensive investment. I got lucky with the D800 used prices, I picked up a Tokina 24-70mm 2.8 and 70-200m F4, both are excellent optically and were notably better value than some other offerings. I could move to Canon without a huge loss if you pick carefully, but there is little to gain doing this for me. I would never go near Sony again

Nice video - thanks !...I think if you are just into stills photography then this is a bargain thesedays. I converted to micro four thirds about 18 months ago from Nikon DSLR's - I bought a Panasonic GX8 and some lenses - Although they were excellent I hankered after my Nikon cameras so I sold the GX8 and decided to just find another D90 and buy a couple of Nikon lenses...total budget was £350 and I got the D90, 35mm F1.8 DX and 16-85mm VR ... Sorted 😁

Used prices seem to settle down a bit recently, but some bodies can still be expensive. This is worth a look for photography, once you start moving up prices 400-500+ then I see no point looking at APS-C (unless you do wildlife), full frame is affordable these days.
@rappler32
@rappler32 Год назад
Nikon doesn't put a '9' on any of their digital cameras unless wholly warranted. The same logic applies to an '8', '7', or '6'. The RAWs from my D90 DX easily stand up to a D850 or Z mirrorless.
@MrBazReviews
@MrBazReviews Год назад
It's still quite good in terms of image quality, and it offers quite a lot for the low asking price. Perhaps the best value APS-C body for what you get overall? Maybe For full frame I think the D800 is maybe the best value on the used market, will be doing a video on that too later on!

Hi do you have any Nikon dslr recommendation for me that is under 500 dollars? I'm doing street photography so a good autofocus on the live view mode is required as i have to shoot handheld almost all the time. I don't really care about the weight as long as it is under 1kg. I was looking at the D90 as I heard that its image quality is excellent but it has a very bad autofocus on live view mode. I currently have the X-T1 but I don't really like the color rendition on it (I don't know why so many people like it) so I'm planning to change to Nikon. I feel like I've always been in love with Nikon's color. Thus the fujifilm lenses are quite expensive so also one of the reason why I'm planning to change. I personally hate Canon's color in the cheaper models because its color is just so dark in some ways. Its not the skin, it's the atmostphere that it is dark. It makes me feels gross whenever I look at its photo. Sony is also quite expensive so I don't want it too.
@MrBazReviews

None of the Nikon DSLR's have great live view AF, apart from the D780 (which is the best by far and usable for action, but also has quirks too), but it's not cheap either. I just don't use live view that much for most photos I take. D90 is pretty good on price, the D7000 I didn't like I found it very iffy for focus (tried 3 too), and honestly I think APS-C isn't worth buying now. You can get a D800 for about 500 odd, and lenses are cheap enough now on the used market. It's not a light camera but capable of excellent results. I'd skip APS-C because nowadays it's just not worth it when full frame is so cheap.
@therykles9845
@therykles9845 8 месяцев назад
@@MrBazReviewsHow do you think about d5500? It has a touch screen so I think the AF will be much more usable on that camera. Its just that it's not a professional level camera but I can still accept that as I think its AF in live view is faster than d800.
@MrBazReviews
@MrBazReviews 8 месяцев назад
@@therykles9845 I don't know what subjects you photograph, that is a later model so it's a bit faster for contrast AF. None bar the D780 are suitable for any kind of action shots. It depends what you want but the D800 would crush the D5500 in image quality and build. D5500 is small and light, but small viewfinder, it might work for you but I'd skip it.
@therykles9845
@therykles9845 8 месяцев назад
@@MrBazReviews I just went out to test the X-T1 again even with the xc 15-45mm and I think that although I don't like its color rendition, maybe I could just edit it in Photoshop and it has a pretty good result while being handheld due to its good AF. I don't think I will need to use the d800, maybe i can wait and upgrade my lenses later.
@MrBazReviews
@MrBazReviews 8 месяцев назад
@@therykles9845 I've used a few Fuji's perhaps the white balance needs adjusting. So if it works stick with it, no need to buy anything. I used APS-C for a long long time, and I just can't go back to it honestly after full frame. There are some obvious advantages of crop smaller size being one, but the image quality isn't the same. Maybe it's good enough though so play around with the X-T1 and see how you get on with it
