This video helped me a lot. I'm researching my D90 upgrade, and one of the things concerning me is losing my 70-200/2.8 by moving to a different brand, so I'd like to stay with Nikon. I'm just an amateur, and don't have the stomach for a lot of $3-4k lenses. After watching this, it looks like my 70-200 will remain quite usable, so I just need to find something reasonable in the lower zoom range.
Great video! CP3O forever etched in my mind! But so is the great match up of the FTZII and F mounts! There is hope for my good lenses matched up to the Z9. Yay! Thanks for posting this Adrian. Great video and some really good wildlife and outdoor shots. Cheers to your willing model too! :)
Luckily, my wife introduced me to photography so as long as I remember to share, we stay married. I bought the 100-400mm and like it well enough but I'm not looking to unload the 80-400mm f anytime soon. It just has a certain character I've not found with any other lens of that range. Put it on any of the full frame Z's and it the lens finds new life. The FTZII is a must have if you add grips or l-brackets. No more digging through the bag to find my tools to add/remove the brackets every time I want to change lenses.
Thanks for watching Dave. Yes totally agree about that 80-400mm. Just something about it isn't there. FTZII was great for me since buying the Z7 roughly the same timing. Thanks for sharing your thoughts 🙏📸
I have experienced no issues with the original FTZ on my Z50. Yes I get some focusing motor noise when using my Sigma 150-600 but if I ever use this for video the sound is not an issue. Since I use the lens tripod mount here the tripod mount on the adaptor is a non issue also. I also use my Sigma 10-20 for video but I haven't noticed any noise from this lens. If I'm not using a radio microphone I normally use a Rode shotgun microphone on the camera. One of the great revelations using the Z50 FTZ combination was using some of my 1970s vintage Nikon glass particularly a lovely 180 mm f/2.8 prime.
I am thinking about to buy the Z50 and I have already the Sigma 150-600mm. Did you ever experienced some lag with the autofocus? Is it slower with the adapter? I am asking because I want to use it for Wildlife photography.
I bought the FTZII and I don’t even have a Z camera. I’m hoping to have a Z9 by summer, but wanted to be able to use my F glass the day I get the Z9. I’ll sell my D850 then and use those funds for the Z100-400.
I use a Sigma 24-35 F2 lens with the orijinal ftz adapter. It is a big and heavy lens with a 82mm filter thread. The tripod mount of the adapter is useful for balancing the lens. They form a straight line and the camera doesn't face forward down.
Fabulous that it works so well on your existing lenses. All the shots and video looked great, especially the slow mo. Glad to see the crabs were back in droves!
Hi Adrian, got it spot on with that divorce comment. 😁👍 However, I think that to do your z7 justice, I would buy 70-200mm E FL, a newer version of VRII. It's sharper than v2., doesn't focus breath and your z7 will squeeze a lot of details out of it. Most importantly, used ones are reasonably priced on ebay compared to S line.
I wish I knew why Nikon added that tripod mount on the bottom of the original FTZ adapter, made no sense. Anyway, nice video, I loved the b-roll of the parrot!
Thanks for watching Leo. At least they fixed the issues from the first FTZ. This new one conforms to the camera really well. Have an awesome weekend, take care 🙏📸
Hi Adrian, a great video! Adapters are generally fantastic. I used a lot of different ones for years on my Sony cameras for my old lenses from my analogue photography time. For some of my old Minolta AF lenses even autofocus worked with the right adapter. But I'm quite positively surprised how good and especially fast autofocus worked on your adapter. This seems to be a really good one. Thank you for sharing! Nice greetings, Christian
Thanks for watching Christian. I'm surprised how well this adapter works. It's good knowing if I ever do need a Nikon F mount lens I can use it. But I will be mainly sticking to the Z lenses I have for landscape. Hope you have a great weekend my friend, cheers 🙏📸
Hi Adrian, another good video as always. I have the Z6II and use the first FTZ and yes it can be a nuisance using it with a tripod. Also have D850, I use the D850 quite a lot for sport able to crop and not lose much detail in images, I also use the Nikon 80-400mm lens what f stop do you find the best peak performance f5.6 or above I do find images can be a little soft at 400mm? Apart from FTZ and tripod problems do you think the FTZII helps in picture quality in any way?
Brilliant video again Adrian. I have the original FTZ adaptor but haven't used it for ages. The tripod plate is a real pain. In fact I've sold nearly all my old "F" mount lenses now anyway so it probably won't get a run anytime soon. I don't have any long focal length lenses these days so it's not such an issue for me. I think your use case scenario makes perfect sense with the new adaptor.
Thanks for watching Richard. It'll do the job for now. Eventually I'll get the Nikon Z 20mm F1.8 S lens for astro like the one you work your magic with. I think Nikon have a Z 200-600mm coming out which I'll be interested in seeing. Then I dare say I might be selling off a lot of my F mounts with the exception of keeping the 70-200mm F2.8. Amazing lens. Of course this all depends on Nikon releasing a cheaper version Z9 like camera down the track I can use for birds and wildlife. Hope you have an awesome Sunday mate, cheers 🙏📸

Lovely day Adrian, still very cold here in Spain. Interesting review on the FTZII adapter and a lot cheaper using your lenses for Nikon users, similar with Canon users. Many thanks for sharing the info :)
Thanks for watching Shaun. Pretty hot on this day, but being by the ocean here makes things about 5 degrees cooler than the city. Wishing you a great weekend mate, cheers 🙏📸
Great Video as always, Adrian! We laughed out loud about the C-3PO comparison. I like the design of the FTZ II but I think I'll stay with my (3) original FTZ adaptors. They work fine with no interference with my Sunway foto L-Brackett for my Z6. Where I have problems is on my Z50. Can't use my 3-legged thing Zayla L bracket with the FTZ. But Nikon has finally added an ultra-wide DX lens to their roadmap so when that comes out finally, I'll buy that instead and bring my Z50 back into service as my landscape photography camera with no adaptors at all. I already have the 16-50 and 50-250 Z DX lenses. The ultra-wide on the roadmap is a Z DX 12-28 so that's 18-42mm full-frame equivalent. Not as wide as my 11-16 Tokina gets me with its 16.5-24mm full-frame equivalent but I can work with 18mm. Whoops, I appear to have gone down a rabbit hole over here. I just wanted to say the Z DX 12-28 should eliminate my need for an FTZ II. Thanks, Adrian!
Thanks Phil. Yeah if the FTZ is working ok for you, then no need to upgrade. Especially if you're planning on going for Z lens purchases from here on in. Hope you had fun while you were away with the fam, and glad you liked the 3PO joke. Cheers and have a great week.
I rarely use my original FTZ with my Nikon Z6ii as I bought the 24-70 and 70-200mm 2.8's, the only time I've used it was with my Sigma 120-300mm 2.8 and it worked beautifully for a little video. But after seeing this I may bring it out for some landscapes with the Sigma. When I get my Z9 I may also have to get the FTZII just to use my Sigma.
Hello my friend another great video. As you know I don’t shoot with Nikon I have Canon RP. I was wondering that adapter would be better used on a crop sensor camera our can it be used on a full frame one. Oh that slow motion with parrot was just amazing. Have a great weekend stay safe.
Many thanks for watching. I'm pretty sure you use this FTZ on crop like the Nikon Zfc and Z50. Should work no worries. Yeah those birds are really beautiful. I did not realise they were even there until I heard them talking to one another. Have an awesome week, cheers and take care 🙏🙏📸
Thanks Peter, really appreciate you watching. Hope the back is getting better. Still haven't seen you out and about yet, so am guessing you're still resting. Have a great weekend mate, cheers 🙏📸
Splendid review and images! I am considering the adapter for a Z6ii and my beloved 80-200 2.8 AF Nikon lens. This lens however is not a VR version. If I may ask you I have a question regarding the slight subject tracking I see on the video of a bird, where your frame motion is very smooth. With this type of a long lens did you achieve this with along lever on your tripod, or is the VR of your lens also a significant factor to image stability?
Thanks so much for watching. I think you should firstly check that your lens you mentioned is fully compatible with the FTZII. I use AF-S lenses which are all compatible but I do now some older Nikon lenses don’t work properly. Just didn’t want you wasting any money 🙏

The FTZ and FTZ II are great. I don’t think many realise how well the work with F mount lenses. Like native in my experience. Also I think Nikon has been unfairly treated because they stopped supporting screw drive lenses. Things change, and Nikon has supported their F mount for 60 years. Time for a change. Also AF-S lenses, which are fully supported by the FTZ, has been the core of Nikons lenses for the last 15-20 years.
Interesting to hear about your lens choices. Upgrading to the 24-120 Z makes sense considering how much you use this focal length for landscapes while continuing using your F-mount teles. As I enjoy shooting wildlife, like many, I am hoping for an animal eye-AF and blackout free viewfinder to make it down from the Z9 to a more affordable option.
Thanks for watching Ivor. Yes I'm hoping an affordable version Z9 like camera is on the cards from Nikon. I would be the first to order if that was the case. So too a lot of other Nikon users I bet. Only the future will tell.
Hello my friend, cheers from Spain. I love your channel. I am considering upgrading to Z6II but Im Worried my Tamron 150-600 g2 lens wont work properly, have you ever tried this one on your mirrorless? Thanks
Thank you for watching my channel. I appreciate it. I don't think you'll get the same performance as using your lens on an F mount. If you can, please hold off upgrading to a Z6II as a Z6III is about to come out. I would personally be going for the Z6III and pair it with one of these lenses I did a comparison on - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-T_XGBRbAUGw.html
Hi, Adrian can you or do you have the older D lenses to try the FTZ II adapter with. I want to know if the FTZ II adapter provides autofocus with the older D lenses, which the first FTZ adapter didn't. Nobody is covering this very important fact. Thank you in advance and great video.
Hi Sid, unfortunately I don't have any D lenses. I will try to find one from someone I know though and give it a test. I think from what I've heard it still does not do autofocus with the D's. Hopefully someone reading this will know and comment on it to let you know. 🙏
The noise from those old F-mount lenses is killing me :-) I think I am going to drop my new Z30 in favor of the Sony camera, their lenses are exactly half the price of the Z lenses, sadly.
G'day Adrian, I found your channel a few months and enjoy it very much. I have the Z7II, 14-30, 24-70F4 and a Laowa 15mm shift lens. I have a specific need to take photos looking down at townships. For example, Townsville, Charters Towers and Rockhampton. I find the new Z mount 70-200 F2.8 and the new 100-400 just too expensive and Nikon don't look like coming out with a 70-200 F4 any time soon. So, I have found your videos on the 80-400 F mount very interesting as I can get this lens for half the price (second-hand) compared to the new 100-400. Very tempting. I've also watched your video on the Z 70-300 Tamron. I assume the 80-400 adapted is in a different league from the Tamron. Do you have a view? Thanks.
Thanks for watching. Watch this video on the 80-400mm on my Z7. Should put any doubts about this lens adapted to rest ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-lVb65nlG43A.html
Yeah, $8,000 couldn't do that either 😂It's some sweet glass for sure but the adapter is just the smarter way to go, you got it Adrian. Great video as always! You know I am a Canon user but I do have a cheap adapter from Vello I used for a few weeks in between changing systems. I still have it around for when I rent "old" lenses. I got an interesting one coming in soon. Not a new release or anything just an interesting concept. It's a 14mm macro wide angle. I KNOW, crazy sauce!! :D Stay cool mate! Cheers, Chris
Thanks for watching Chris. The adapter will do for now. All the F mount lenses work well with it. 14mm macro wide angle! Wow! That would be interesting. Hope you have an awesome weekend, cheers 🙏📸
Hello Adrian, many thanks for your kind response to my email. For me, I'd buy the FTZ II BEFORE I migrate to the Z ecosystem. Like a good Boy Scout, I like to "Be Prepared."
Thanks for watching Paul. Yes I got my Z lenses and the FTZII at the same time. It works really well with the F mounts I have. Just noisy in video unfortunately, but that’s life. Enjoy your week 👍🙏
I am getting ready to purchase the Z6II to use with my AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR lens along with the FTZII adapter. From what I see and read, I shouldn't have any weird experiences with my transition. It looks like the video works very well. Can you manual zoom during taking the video? Your thoughts please. thanks.
@@adrianalfordphotography Thanks, I'll have some fun experimenting when I get my camera. let me ask another question. When you look into the viewfinder will I see full frame image or the cropped image that is being recorded using the DX lenses?
Finally the Video I have been looking for months. I am having Z7 and wanted to buy Z lenses 70-200 F2.8 , but found it very expensive to decide and was stuck if I had to buy F lense with FTZ adapter? Still asking if I am better to buy the Z lens regardless of the price difference, if it is worth it ?
Thanks for watching. Have you seen my long term review on the Nikon 70-200mm F2.8G ED VRII lens? It may have the answer you were asking 👉 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-42FS30jZ7s8.html
I've got my DSLR trinity lens set and I just can't make the leap to all new lenses. I'm considering the z7II but I need to know that the adapter is rock solid otherwise there's no point in getting a new body. Any thoughts on the matter? Does that extra extension create additional stress on the mounting interface?
I’ve used all three of my F trinity lenses on the Z7 with no issues. Obviously with the 70-200mm you don’t hold or mount the camera body. Hold or mount lens on tripod.
@@Camrographer Z lenses are best on the native Z mount cameras and more silent. I had no issue with accuracy with F mounts on my Z7. I suggest you borrow or hire a Z camera with FTZ for a weekend and see how yout F mounts go.
@@Camrographer Hi Mike, just got a Z6ii and FTZ II adapter, and want to ask what lenses comprise the F trinity? I already own a F-mount 20mm prime and a Tamron 24-70 (which is a tad heavy, if you know what I mean...). Do you notice any quality loss using the F mounts on your Z camera? Thanks.
Yeah I know. A lot of other people are saying the same thing. I guess that’s why car manufacturers no longer make parts for certain older cars. They want you to buy one of their new cars. Same goes for camera manufacturers like Nikon. They’re kind of forcing people to move on to newer products. I guess they are a business after all and have to make money somehow 🤷♂️
@@kayevang5083 no it does not from my experience. It’s is a clear adapter no glass involved. The only thing is the focus is not quite as fast as being mounted straight on an F mount camera compared to being adapted on a Z camera. And the focus noise of the F mount lens when shooting video and tracking something
@@adrianalfordphotography thank you so much for this as it helps me a lot in deciding wether I should save some money and get the 70-200mm F mount to use with ftz adapter that was given to me as a gift or if I should just save up and get the native z mount for my Z camera. Now I will think about it and decide 😁
Does the FTZII work on the Z 7II body? I ran across a video last week that said it works on the Z6 and Z7, but does not work on the Z7II. HEP ME! HEP ME! Getting ready to push the button to buy a Z7II and need to know if the FTZII mount adapter works FLAWLESSLY on the Z7II?
@@adrianalfordphotography Thank you! Looking back over my notes, it is the Z7 Vertical Battery Grip that does not work on the Z7II, the contacts are located in a different place from what I have read. Thanks for clearing up the FTZII fitment question for me.
I hv 5600 dslr, planning to buy a lens..... Finally understood there is no point in spending money on F mount lens..... I can't afford to buy both mirrorless camera & mirrorless lens in one go...... Is there any solution to use z lens on dslr camera
Not sure what it was when I did this video Dave. I know I had an issue when I put it on the Nikon Z50, but a firmware update on that camera fixed it, no worries. Runs all my F mounts now on that camera.
