Nikon has finally created a high quality video lens that comes with a reasonable price tag. I wanted to talk about the pros and cons of this lens after 8 months of heavy use.

I would recommend getting a used copy of this lens. I got a good lens for around $500.
Don't be afraid of the the f4 aperture of the Nikon 24-70. Since this is a full frame camera and is so great at low light it can still take amazing pictures. This is one of the first quality video lenses made by Nikon. The auto focus is silent and fast with minimal focus breathing. Since the lens starts at f4 it will be sharp corner to corner even "wide open"
To see videos shot with this lens look at almost all of my videos over the last 8 months, and they were probably shot on this lens. The 24-70 is my go to lens for walking around when I am going to be shooting a variety of things, or any time I want to use auto focus with video. With other F mount lenses I will usually just try to use manual focus if possible.

Would you buy a Z camera with this kit lens?

I fully agree to your conclusion. I bought it used as a kit together with the Z6 and the FTZ adapter. And I was the impression to put it in my bag and not use it very much. But I was also wrong - I use it as a my got to lens for my studio shoots on the Z6 (it replaced my D750 + 24-120 f4 combo immediately). And another big surprise was when I bought me the macro extension tubes from Meike (11mm + 18mm for about 30 €, fully AF & Aperture transmission). This works great for blossoms and other macro stuff - almost better results than my 90mm F-mount Macro lens (Tamron). To my view there is no need to buy the more expensive f2,8 version. And for dedicated 'bokeh' portraits I am using my 50 and 85 mm 1,8 f-mount G lenses on the adapter. Bottom line - I will never sell this lens. ;-) Greetings from Germany - and stay safe!!!

I did the same thing didn't get it when I got the Z6, but ended up finding one on eBay about 3 months later. So glad I did, I rarely take it off. Nice video

I bought it as part of the Z6 kit, with the FTZ adapter as well. I was not sure if I would keep it or use the adapter to switch to an F-mount 24-70 F2.8. Its overall IQ is exceptional for a kit lens. Everyone raves about the Fuji 18-55mm, but I think this one is an even better lens, fulfilling the same purpose for Nikon FF as a compact lens that delivers more than acceptable results. F4 constant aperture is gets the job done in all but the most demanding lighting conditions thanks to the IBIS, and if there is a need for very low, you would opt for a prime anyway (I own the 50mm and 85mm F1.8s and they perform exceptionally well). Realistic, down to earth review, agreed with every single point you brought up.

Nice review, thanks...A little hack for the lens hood, I never leave it on the lens in my camera bag. I loop the camera bag strap into it.

You should have incorporated some low light samples and how it creates background blurring and bokah effects at f/4 or a little higher. Otherwise, enjoyed the video

Greetings! Wanted to ask how does this lens performs in low light situations (ex. wedding receptions, dance floor etc). It comes as a kit lens for z6ii but thinking of buying just the body and invest on the 2.8 version as I'd love to be a little more versatile. Thanks in advance!

Good video, is it a good option for videos as well or should buy a prime 35 f1.8 as well. Pls suggest should I go for z6ii with this lense.

This is a great lens, and will give you plenty of zoom flexibility. If you need a super shallow depth of field then get the f1.8, but if you want a single lens that will do everything well I would go with this one to start

Lovely video. Thanks for that. I'm using fujifilm for years but I'm getting the z6ii soon. I'm doing some small events photography with the sigma 17-50mm f2.8 and sometimes I have to use 4000 with my xt3. With an f4 I would probably have to used 6400 or even higher. Do you think the noise will be similar to the fuji files? I'm hoping it's going to be better

I switched from the Fuji xt2 to the Nikon Z6, and found the noise to be way better on the full frame.

Yeah I like the compact size of the f4, I'm not sure if I will eventually pick up the f2.8 or just get some primes for that beautiful shallow depth of field!

Have you ever lock it to travel mode accidentally while shooting? That's what I scare of.

No, there is sort of a soft stop at 24mm so you wouldn't accidentally go past it. And if I did you could easily twist it back

I use my Z6ii w/ 50-250 lens.The Z 24-70mm doesn't work to my liking on the Z6ii.

Im trying to figure out who you are talking to, is somebody behind the camera? Is it just me or are you looking way up like you are talking to somebody else behind the camera? Other than that great info, good video.

The f4 on full frame, translates to f2. 8 on cropped???? You lost me there buddy.

4 / 1.5 = 2.7 It isn't exactly the same, but if you got for the same framing on the cropped sensor as the full frame you will get similar depth of field even though you have to step back with the cropped sensor. It isn't a full equivalency, but it is the same in some regards
