I jumped on the Venus Optics 35mm f/0.95 as soon as it was released. For some things, I can easily manage no auto focus. At the time, I also picked up the Nikon 35mm f/1.8 Z so can have a 35mm with AF for certain projects.. I passed on this 35 1.4 and got the superior (imo) 50mm f/1.4 - been shooting both 35s for years. My clients always love the look of the f 0.95. It's very popular with clients. If i didn't get that lens, I'd still be waiting for nikon to release the $2,800 35mm f/1.2 behemoth 😊
I got one during summer. Since I have the 50mm 1.8 already, I felt I would get more variety in my collection with the 35mm 1.4, rather than the 1.8. I use it mostly for low light shots with the Z6.
Very interesting. I don't know if the exposure was slightly different or something else impacting it, but the shots from the 1.4 look more saturated on my screen.
Thanks for the Shoreham shoot. I don't have a 35mm lens and can't make up my mind which to get? It's been fifty plus years since have been on the Shoreham beach. It brings back memories. Now I spend time when I can on Noosa Heads beach. 😄
As always, great video!! I like the fun intro regarding Miami. Does the 50mm f/1.4 have similar "character" to the 35mm f/1.4? And how do the Voigtlander 35mm & 50mm f/2 APO-Lanthar lenses compare to these f/1.4 Nikons as far as character (and your preferred lens)? Also I'm looking forward to your reviews of the new APO-Lanthar II lenses in a few months 🙂
I’ve never owned - or even used - a 35 prime. But I think it’s about time. Will be going for the 1.4, but my ideal choice would be the 1.8 except with separate Control & Focus rings. I expect holiday promos to hit the 1.4 (and Z6III? 🤗) so I’m patiently waiting 🎅🏻
Oh boy. I can still hear my mama saying "the sea will get empty" Thanks for the 'review' though. Don't forget to go and see Lucy Thomas on the 22nd in Th. Royal Drury lane. See you there?😄
Sorry off the subject. Is there a good chart showing what AF lenses work with the F4,F5, and F6. As well as the F100, F501, F301, F80, and F90? I am so confused.
Hi, thanks for the review! What I really want to see is a comparison between the Z 35mm f1.4 to the old one 35 f1.4G, I love the character of the old one, but I could not find any direct comparison between them.
As i saw...new Zf1.4 lens is probably little bit sharper in the middle, lighter, with better focus and control ring...but older G version have smoother bokeh(new Z lens looks more like f1.6 lens to me, becouse of the more harsh bokeh), probably little bit less CA in the corners...old G version has nano crystal coatings, so it's probably takes little bit nicer photos. :)
Also love the 35mm G, this one is replacing it in my collection. Yes the G version has a little edge on it but… the shooting experience on a Z body with the native Z lens tips it for me. Well worth it. And the difference there is in bokeh and ‘character’ is really small, you really have to look for it… so, go for it I’d say.
I have the 35 f/1.8 - probably the least used of my Z primes. It is nice and sharp but also fairly boring. The 35 f/1.4 would likely have been my choice if I'd been buying now, but it was really hard to spot any differences apart from when it is shot at f/1.4.
It's lovely to have all these choices; 35 40 50 in 1.4 or 1.8 or f2. Having already a 'character' 40mm f2, is there a logical added value for either this 35 1.4 of 50 1.4?
I suppose that if I did not have a 35mm Z mount lens, I would seriously consider the F1.4 but I already have the F1.8. I don't see enough difference to justify a switch although that auxiliary ring is a nice touch.
If I started my Lens collection again I’d probably go for it for the price.. I’d also do the rebadged tamron trinity to save on size and weight.. ultimate top of the line optics is great but weight does eventually become a factor
I belive an S line version can coexist along with this n cater the needs of hybrid shooters. 1.4 S line can be a optimum balance of quality charecterictic weight and price
Still waiting for 1.2 version. And I really hope it's out for another wedding season, because that 1.8 version is the worst Z glass I have and 1.4 is no better.
