Hey Everyone! Little bit of a deep dive Geeky video here its certainly won't be for everyone ! For those of you that watched the whole thing I hope you found this video useful and found something that could help you. Also I know the big question is going to be can these changes be applied to the Original Z 6 & Z 7. I do not know yet but trying to find out details about new Firmware updates for the Z 6 and Z 7 going forwards. Thanks again for watching !
A lot of those changes could be put in the Z6 and Z7 firmware, especially where features are removed (such as view info disable). I am hoping that Nikon puts out a firmware update with some of those low-hanging fruit changes, but I am not holding my breath.
I was going to ask this very same question - I hope the software improvements make their way down to the z6/z7. I would love have the no info display, shutter speeds past 30” and the focus memory just to name a few. Thanks for the video!
I had a Sony A7riii (since sold to move to Nikon) - watching this menu summary would have made me cry 6 months ago. I know Sony has improved their menus, but for years people had to deal with a total incoherent mess. The Nikon menu is so intuitive and clean and so well designed.
Hey Richi, would love to see some close up comparison images with skin textures with Z vs F mount, similar to how Gordon at cameralabs did the RF vs EF 85 test recently.
I wasn't going to ask, that's why I'm late. The focus point in manual mode, with the D850 it's a fairly large red box. With the Z7II it's half the size. Any way to have it the larger D850 size? Question #2 ~ on the Z9 there's a 'glove' mode for the LCD screen, it can be turned off. Any such work around for the Z7II?
Thanks for the video Ricci. It really looks like Nikon has addressed most of the things that the Z's were criticised for. They listened! I have a Z6 myself and I think it's great. I hope they will give us Z6 users a firmware upgrade that makes it closer to the version II in regards to the customization. The new "no screen clutter" view would be awesome. Having menus that are (almost) equal makes it easier for user of the current Z and the new Z II and less frustrating.
Another really good video. I love the even tone without hyperbole and the great information. All these changes make the Z6ii and Z7ii even more compelling.
I am an enthusiast landscape and wildlife photographer with a Nikon D610 and Tamron 70-200 lens as a main lens. I am considering moving to a Z7II and some S lenses. This is the first video of yours I have seen. Great info. I subscribed and clicked the notification bell. Looking forward to more videos. Your content is exactly what I need.
I REALLY hope so. I’m pretty pissed that Nikon would make me spend thousands just to get a clean rear screen - like almost EVERY other digital camera that’s ever been made 😡
I doubt they would. I've been waiting since the D780's release when I saw it in there. It's a feature I'm sure they want to help sell the new bodies. I think Nikon did a great job of adding features throughout the years on our Z bodies. I want it but if I were them I'd leave it only on the new bodies. They need money to survive anyway.
Ricci, I binged on several of your videos last night. Your tests of the S Line lens in comparison to the F lens were just awesome. So informative and useful. I am a subscriber to your channel. I have a few questions that hopefully you can address. I’m a serious photographer with Nikon since leaving Minolta for a D 90 in 2009. I pre ordered the D 600 and currently use F line 24/70 F2.8 ED, 70/200 F2.8 VR II, 58 F1/4, and 85 F1/8. I pre ordered the 58 but I never hear about it. I also never had sensor problems with the D 600 but it’s reputation was damaged, replaced by the D 610. I admit that my equipment has been sitting for a year or two but I do read and am looking forward to the next steps as a pro in a few years. But where am I going? I almost moved up to the D 850 but didn’t I get it due to back order unavailability and then talks of mirrorless. I was excited about the Z 7 & 6 but held off with pre orders because of the bad press and Nikon’s initial foray into mirrorless. Plus my Nikon experience getting pre order because of good press. I thought about moving to Sony then more recently to Canon R 5. But that would require all new lenses. Nikon Z 7 II is impressive and has my eye. I thought my current lens setups would work good with the Z 7 II but the S lens are much more impressive than my pro class F lens as your videos are showing. 1. Could the F lens adapter effect the quality of F lens on the Z 7? The S glass is a step up in quality as you point out in your comparison videos. 2. What are your thoughts on the 58 F 1/4 on the Z 7 II? Did you test it on the Z’s? 3. Looks like the S line roadmap updated and now contains an 85 1/4. Not bad but how will that impact the good S 85 1/8? 4. Any chance the S 24-105 will an F4 lens? I’d like a walk around lens but not a S 24/70 F4. 5. What are your thought on using my good F lens with adapter on the Z 7 II? 24/70 F 2.8 ED, 70/200 F 2.8 VR II, 58 F 1/4, and 85 F 1/8. This is well rounded for how I like to shoot; sport and portrait. Hope I didn’t overwhelm you with questions but I certainly enjoyed your informative tests and presentations. Thanks Les Laham442@gmail.com Bowie, Md USA
Great to see the in menu changes. I'm chomping at the bit to upgrade my Z6 but I'm holding off until I see your focus comparison. Also when's the 70-200mm full review coming?
Yes this is an interesting video. As I am about to but my order in. Have fun as Grays of Friday. Thank you for all your videos. PS for me your channel is one of the best resource for information of new Nikon kit and telling us how to use it, in an honest way.

Hey Ricci…. You are doing a great job with the channel… I have just found out recently about it and I am really liking it… just one question, have you already released the RU-vid video about the wireless triggers?, I can seem to find it?.
I am surprised you only have gotten 18l subs since you are the best source of actual Nikon information and the best lens tests of any channel or brand. I refer a lot of people to the channel but probably did not increase the sub rate much. The new menu options all make so much sense and really refine the control of the camera to personal taste. The less intrusive level display is very welcome. For me, the only real benefit for 2 slots is having video directed to the second card so in transfers to my network drives stills are not bogged down by large video files. The new focus control options are very nice to see, and not having to separately select a menu option for eye detect or animal and now the single af mode menu list has the eye detection choice. The ability to restrict eye detection to an area is exactly what I need for my theater work, where shooting individuals in a scene with multiple actors it will be a snap to assure AF is limited to who I am seeking. That is a side business that grew from volunteering to shoot at a few theaters where my friends were actors, and that grew into contracts with 31 theaters, that augments my product, portraiture and fashion studio sessions. The more the details of the Z6/7 2 are seen the more compelling they are. These little details are significant improvements in ease of use. Will you be getting newer closer to production firmware before general release? I would love to see you do an AF test for tracking to see how much faster and sure it is. One thing that the RU-vid influencers who pan Nikon fail to understand, the speed of display focus point tracking has little relationship with actual focus. Several of the usual bashers of Nikon tout the superiority of Sony AF over and Z6/7 by showing the speed of scene focus point indication but when burst most was used, one showed the actual images and the Z6 had far more in focus than Sony. The speed of the focus box had little relation to the actual attainment of focus on erratic moving subjects. That is what I find in shooting ballroom dance competition(which is faster than most sports) that I consistently get more in-focus images than my competing photographers who use a73. Shooting equestrian events, show jumpers reveals the same. Possibly the lens differences could be part of it but the Z cameras deliver the sharp in-focus images consistently. The trainers want 3-4 nailed shots on each jump focused on leg position at the plant, extension and landing. Due to the indoor training arenas, light is a challenge so wide apertures for the fast shutters that are needed and the Z6 delivers. The ONLY problem that took getting used to was the shutter delay compared to the D850, the shutter release button press and actual capture is milliseconds later so took some practice to compensate. From your tests do you notice any change in the shutter response time on the Z6 2?
I do hope Nikon will retrospectively apply those setting options to the Z6 and Z7, for example I shoot the night sky, and would appreciate shutter speeds longer than 30 seconds. Love the menu overview in my view there is more of an upgrade to the Mk ii versions than indicated by some people who seem to have over looked the menu options mostly. Thanks Ricci love you videos.
Ridiculous arrogance on Tokyo's part to ignore repeated articulated requests for this Option, which is so simple. Nikon has had the code since 2015 ie pending releasing the D5 and D500. NO sale to me until then. There is NO excuse this time. These cameras can languish in warehouses until the Firmware - or will it be Z vIII?
@@FCotterill Couldn't agree more. Heights of arrogance by Nikon and no wonder they're struggling to sell their mirrorless bodies. On one had, the Z lenses are setting new benchmarks with outstanding optics and on the other hand there are these half baked camera bodies with missing features and functionalities. This is one of the features a lot of photographers including some of the prominent ones like Thom Hogan and Brad Hill have expressly asked for in several of their blog posts.
@@RicciTalks Hi Ricci, could you please pass on the message officially to Nikon, as to how important this feature is for a lot of sports/action/wildlife shooters? I tried my best to write to Nikon officially on this one right after the first gen Zs were introduced but no luck. I am a D850 user and was seriously considering adding a Z6II or Z7II to complement my D850 for wildlife shooting but the lack of assigning the AF-on+AF area mode alone is a show stopper for me and a lot of folks. This may sound a bit silly but thats how much i use that function with my Nikon DSLR and i would like my Nikon DSLRS and Mirrorless to "Handle" the same way.
Super disappointed also with this oversight. I can't figure out any reason why they can't include this. Why are they half baking these cameras compared to their logical DSLR counterparts...ie Z7II vs D850? Nikon wants me to shell out another $4K CAD for what?
Thank you so much! I always appreciate the deeper dive into details that are too often skimmed over by others. Looking forward to your next ones, and hope you make it (at least) to 20k subscribers by 2021. Take care!
@@RicciTalks And sound is via the lapel mic straight into the camera? There were some complaints about mic amp noise on the original Z6 - any noise (albeit with pre-production firmware) on the ii?
Hey Ricci, great Video! Is it now possible to preview the image in 100% view at higher apertures than f/5.6? The Z6/7 automatically stops up in 100% view, which makes it hard to get hyperfocal distance right at higher aperture. And do you know if the self timer still resets, when you turn the camera off?
Thank you for the videos and info, z72 on order moving from D850. new Z setup looks very complicated, been checking out all your videos and subscribed. Any guide books anybody can recommend? take care
Do you know if the Z6 II has improved video quality? I know the original Z6 uses a full sensor readout for video, and 'downsamples' it to 4k, but the maths it uses is pretty poor so there are some issues with artifacts on fine details, which shouldn't happen on a properly downsampled image. With the Z6 II having two processors, I was wondering whether the downscaling algorithm is improved at all. Having trouble finding info about it.
Hi DIY Perks, I cannot relate with the artifacts you mention, maybe codec compression on extreme high bitrate material? On the Z 6II you can even go 4k60. You will get a crop with 1:1 pixels which becomes even slightly sharper that the transcoded 4k30. Ricci mentioned this in one of his video's. If you want to get even more detail (10 bit), record externally on a Atomos or Black Magic recorder, you can even go (12bit) RAW video.
Hey Ricci - great Video! One question please. Concerning the mode "save Focus position". Will the camera save the focus position for a lens even it was pulled off after saving the position and later after I have used several other lenses and I attach it again will the previous saved position still exist?
Really enjoying your videos Ricci. Would you be able to review the auto focusing in more detail of the Z6ii as I think we are all waiting to see if that Eye auto focus is better. Also is the Yellow box more stickier. I was using my awesome Z6 the other day shooting a wedding and it just seemed to take to long time to wake back up after not using the camera for an about a min Many thanks G
Informative, video I’ll have to review those options once I get a Z 7 II. BTW, when you review the review the new radio transceiver, can you let us know if you can use it at the same time with an HDMI cable plugged into the Z6 & Z7. The current radio transceiver partially blocks the mini HDMI port on the Z6 & Z7
Hi Ricci. Great video as usual. Is it possible to enable highlight warnings/blinkies/zebras when shooting stills in the new cameras? In the originals you could see this after the fact while reviewing images, but not in the live view while shooting.
Hey Ricci, thanks for this in depth video, very helpful. Do you by chance have any info about the lcd lag in the 24/25fps modes? It was bad in the Z 6 and even worse when pairing it with the Ninja V, wondering if the dual processors helped this a bit.
Nice video! I own the D5 D850 and the D500 with 25 Prime F mount Nikon lenses including the 600mm E FLED 500mm PF 300mm PF 200mm f:2 etc.. Is it worth it to get into the mirrorless game yet? I waited for Version 2 of these cameras and it's finally here, or should I wait for the Z9 which is the D6 Mirrorless equivalent? Thanks in advance!
Thank you for this great video! Can I transfer my settings for the Z 6 to the new Z II cameras, e.g. save them on the Z 6 on an XQD card and transfer the settings with this card to the Z 6 II?
Hey Ricci, thanks for doing this informative video. Seems you are the only guy in N.A. that has early access....great for you but a huge fail on Nikon's marketing department. I have a question....when you are in H+ mode to get the fastest FPS can you still select AF modes other than Single Point and the FPS just drops to what a Z6/7 would have done in H+. For example on the Z7II the 10FPS is limited to using Single Point AF, can I still select Auto/Tracking and it will just drop to 9FPS like the Z7 would have had at H+ with all AF modes available? Thanks
Thanks for the video. Definitely in for a z7II in about half year later. I am rather curious about the image quality improvement (both jpg and raw) due to the dual processor and firmware imrovement. Would you compare the IQ of z7ii with z7 and D850 later?
Thanks for all of this information! I'm not purchasing the z7ii as I've only had the z7 for five months and it's quite adequate for me. (I'll wait for the 8 or 9!) I installed the 3.11 firmware the other day. Was hoping the "Live view info display off" would also work on the z7, but the option to clear the screen doesn't seem to be there.
Hi, love the video. I just bought the Z7 II coming out from the D850. How can I see the aperture and shutter changes while looking a the back screen? I am an interior photographer and only use the back screen to compose and see the changes while combining the shutter, aperture, and ISO. Can't find this on the menu... Any suggestions?
Hi Ricci, watch almost all your videos and I know you’ll probably be the best person to ask this question so here goes - For movie recording AF speed - does this also work for f-mount lenses (or is it only functioning correctly for Z lenses) ? And also the af fine tuning does this work for f-mount af/s lenses also ? Much appreciate your feedback thanks
Awesome thanks for the super effective video. Could you let us know whether Z 6II/Z 7II can assign "AF area + AF-on" function to any custom button that can doable on D500 or D5? I really like that feature.
Great video Ricci - so insightful. A question related to the new bodies, that I cannot seem to find answered, even by Nikon. They made reference to superior dynamic range on the new Z7ii when compared to the Z7 - can you confirm if this is the case please? Will you being doing image quality comparison between the old and new? Thanks for your time mate.
Z6 really needs the clean live view option to come via firmware update, it can be really challenging to frame correctly in some situations with out it. (Eye AF in Wide Area L would be an incredible boon as well.) I hope Nikon isn't lazy/greedy in this regard. Both to maintain the same operation for people who own both cameras, but as an easy way to show appreciation to customers who supported this system from early on.
Even though they could get an intern level software engineer to do this basically for no cost, Nikon would never give you this. This is the reason they will eventually go out of business.
I’d love for the option to run with a clean back screen as all the info gets in the way when shooting real estate, and surely it’s possible with a single processor!
Hi, thanks for the video. One question. Does the Interval shooting mode with "interval autofocus" mode work well for self-portraits? I`m a lot in the mountains alone and i like to have some pictures standing in front of the camera :) My Sony System doesn't offer this feature and i consider switching to Canon or Nikon.
Hi Ricci, Just recently got the Z 7, do you think Nikon will have another firmware update with some of the new software in the new versions, I am thinking of something simple like extending the 30 seconds maximum to the 15 minutes they will have on the version 2.
Great video i have the z6 .. i would really like to see a video on taking pictures of birds in flight to see has the AF TRACKING is any good because as you know the z6 is not any good for this thanks
They should have the changes to the menus and focus modes for the original bodies, if only for consistency and better UX. I would personally hate to have differences. Hoping this will come but I’m not optimistic. Even if they can’t support the Wide Area Eye AF, then at least the older bodies should get the Auto Area Eye AF modes. I don’t believe what I read on DPReview about the Wide Area modes are processor specific, when it’s a smaller area to analyse. Doesn’t make sense to me, it seems like it should require less processing power. I think it would be nice if Subject Tracking was put in its own mode too. Not bundled in with Auto Area. The OK/FN activation is okay but this it could be refined further. I’m tempted to trade my Z6 in, but don’t need the Dual Slots or Battery Grip, so probably won’t due to the principal of it being menu changes mostly. AF performance I can live with. I’ll see how Nikon handles it first and if they abandon Z6/7 users. I’m sure most would be happy with even a paid firmware upgrade. People who want card slots, grips and quicker focus will upgrade regardless. Everyone else would just appreciate the increased menu and UI functionality
I’m with you 100%, I would love the non-hardware specific updates, I only have a set budget, so choosing Z lenses at the moment over a new body. But I would feel a lot happier if my body had a longer life than 18 months as it gets great useability updates. From a sales point of view, users would feel part of a system rather than just locked in. The old paradigm of camera sales has shifted and Nikon need a new model to keep old customers and bring in new ones too.
I really wish Nikon would let me assign a different focus mode to the afon button than the shutter release button. I use this all of the time on my d500/850 and I miss it when shooting on the Z. Seems like a simple thing to include that they are leaving out. Would be nice to instantly activate tracking, or the new eye detect wide mode if shooting in single point or dynamic
@@csc-photo From DPReview: The new cameras have received a major update to the way their autofocus works, with human or animal eye/face detection now available in the cameras' Wide area AF modes. The significance of this is that it lets you limit the zone of face/eye detection to the part of the frame you want to focus on, making it easier to select your subject. Nikon says this feature is contingent on the additional processing power supplied by the dual processors, and so is unlikely to be extended to the original Z6 and Z7 via firmware. The company also claims that overall AF performance has been improved, specifically in terms of stickiness, when it comes to focus tracking. Which I call bullshit. Doesn’t make sense to me. It’s to push people to upgrade.
YES! Saw the assignable playback button in there! I still can't make it match my Z50, but maybe someday. It would probably have to be the red button or AF-ON button eventually.
Thanks for the great video. One thing... The camera on the mini tripod in the background made me nervous, just setting there, ready to topple over at any moment. Glad it didn't. :-)
Hi Ricci - great job with this and all your vids. Thanks for producing them! I wanted to say that your sound levels seemed to be improved with this vid. Often times I need to turn you way up to hear you, but not on this vid!
When you choose the extended shutter speed, let’s say you choose 60 seconds, can you stop the shutter whenever you want like around 40 seconds etc? I’d like to know before I upgrade to Z7 II.
Hi Ricci, Will these Z 6ii and Z 7ii remember and recall their drive mode even after going in standby or a restart? Like they do for Single , CL, CH. With my Z 6 it can't recall Timer after going in standby or a restart. Hope Nikon resolved that issue or atleast provide a similar option like "save focus position"... which can be called "recall timer" or something similar.
Hi, with extended shutter speed turn to on, will camera calculate exposure after 30" or only work as a timer? I mean, for example if you use 3 stops ND and ask for 8 ", if you change to a 10 stops ND, will the machine calculate time above 30"? And Brakting too? Thanks
Hello sir, I'm a Nikon D750 user & also have many F mount lenses. Now I am planning to buy Nikon Z7ii camera. But confused about 2 lenses, Nikon 28-75 f2.8 and 24-70 f4 ?? Which is suitable for me ?? I'm a wedding photographer & never shoot video.. Please suggest me 🙏🙏🙏🙏
I'll patiently wait for a bargain used Z7 to show up locally and the 50/1.2S. The update is mainly slots and AF stuff it seems, nothing I need personally. Edit: split screen display zoom seems very useful... hmmm.
@@RicciTalks Oh wow, thanks for letting me know. It's hidden under f1 and I missed that. So many options too, time to get rid of stuff I don't need. Maybe I should read the manual... :/
I cant understand why Nikon put longer exposure times just now. Its a great feature I was craving for years. But better later then never. Ricci thanks for the video :)
On Z6 I'm only missing AF speed and second card slot. Pretty happy with image quality. Ohh, maybe ISO64 and af mode shown on top screen would be also nice addition :)
I'm really wanting to see how the animal eye-AF works with the Z6II and Z7 II because I"m seriously considering upgrading from my MFT to Full Frame on the Nikon system.
Ricci, is this pixel mapping like the "dust off reference Photo" option that the D700 had, ie this measured the dust and removed it in the image processing stage, ie: prior to one doing a sensor clean.
I have a basic question that would apply to the Z6 or the Z6 ii. It has to do with image review. When i take a shot, using the viewfinder, the image review shows up in the viewfinder and I have to slightly push the shutter button to have it go away and take the next shot. Is there any setting that would have this camera act like my D850, and only show image review on the LCD, and not the viewfinder, if I am using the viewfinder for photographing. I know I could completely turn image review off, but I still like to "chimp" on the back screen once in a while, but I don't like that I have to clear it form the viewfinder to be able to compose and take my next shot. I am not sure I am being clear, but appreciate your advise. Thank you , and thank you for all of your informative videos.
Are you telling me that I have to waste one of my programmable buttons if I want a clean view of the rear LCD? Please say I’m misunderstanding and that it’s accessible simply by scrolling through the display modes...
@@TaipeiGeek What a strange attack. I am a full time pro, actually, and I've been shooting professionally for 11 years. But I think anyone who likes to customize the camera to fit their shooting style can relate, pro or not. Instead of giving us full customization to program any function to any button, Nikon restricts which buttons can be programmed and then further restricts certain functions to certain buttons. It sucks. All the buttons available to me are programmed to functions that are more critical than getting a clean display, so if that's the only way to do it I'm still going to be stuck with stuff on the LCD that I can't remove. I (and I probably most people) just want to be able to shoot with the LCD with a clean display, without having to awkwardly hold down a special button, and have it just stay that way until we change the display mode again.
@@timk8258 i want my camera have a cup holder, is really annoying have two hands camera needs two hands and no place for cups while shooting, i want one cup holder in american measures and other in metric so I can put any cup with my camera while shooting
Z6 II still doesn't show af mode on top screen? It's a little annoying when you have to look through view finder every time you switch between af modes. On D850 I used to just press function button and scroll the wheel while looking at top screen. It was quick and discreet .
Because lenses always come with a bit of tolerance. So when you feel that your lens is not perfectly focusing you can try to adjust it to get better results
sami mina No, this is how it works in a mirrorless camera. In a DSLR the camera is focusing the lens in a way so that the image is in focus on the mirror where the AF sensors are and when you press the shutter the focus makes a small jump so that the image is in focus on the sensor. And in a DSLR this feature serve the purpose of adjusting the size of this jump.
What about using the Ux settings? Any changes? On Z6/Z7 if you use Ux and do some temporary changes, they are reset to saved settings when the camera is turned off (more than 5 sek). On the D7x00, these temporary settings remained as long as the Ux dial is not changed.
Surely some of the options such as display and longer shutter speeds will be in a firmware update for the Z6/7. It makes no sense for them not to be. Especially the longer shutter that was even in the D780.
Couple of questions regarding the Series II. Nikon DSLRs during play back used to show blinkies (over exposed areas) on the same screen that showed the RGB histogram. That was missing and Z cameras need two different screens to show blinkies and histogram. Has this changed. With series 1, you can also scroll through menus with the sub-selector (joy stick) but strangely when you press the sub-selector instead of selecting the option, the camera goes to shooting menu! Has this been corrected.
