This is the Real World Review of the Nikon Z6 Full Frame Mirrorless Camera. This is the second full frame mirrorless camera that Nikon has released into the market after the Nikon Z7. This version is the lower megapixel, high-iso shooting version. It also features fantastic video quality that will give the Sony a7 III a run for its money.
This entire Real World Review was shot with the Nikon Z6. On location in Florida, Stephen used only the 24-70 f4 Z lens.

Yeah these images are great. That new 70-200mm FL lens is amazing, and the 105mm 1.4 would be awesome...but has terrible "cats-eye" bokeh. I bought one and then returned it as soon as I saw that crap. I think that the new 50mm .95 NOCT will also have "cats-eye" bokeh.

Friday morning I woke up and decided that i was going to buy a camera. I had my mind set on the A7III, that is until I watched this video. I watched this video without skipping anything and once it was over, I got in the car and went and picked this camera up, without reading or watching any other reviews. Jared, you and your team make such amazing content. You give an unbiased opinion, and you bring up the positives and the negatives, no matter what brand you are reviewing. You have helped me become a better photographer over the years, and I know that a lot of other people feel the same way. Everyone at FroKnowsPhoto, thanks for what you do and keep up the amazing work!

Exactly where I'm standing at the moment. Right now I've sold all of my glass and got ready to get into Sony system but now considering seriously going for the z6 with the kit at the moment. How did you fare with it the passing month?
@MedicRyan18
@MedicRyan18 5 лет назад
@@SkipperGeffen Over the past month I have purchased the Z6, the Sony A7III, and the Nikon D850. I loved the images I got with the Z6, the kit 24-70 lens is fantastic. Battery life was so-so, not bad, but could always be better. The EVF and rear screen are literally the best on the market, in my opinion. The buttons felt great and were easy to use. Not to mention that the camera fit my hand perfectly (I have big hands). Overall, it was a fantastic camera. I couldn't stick with the Z6 because I had some serious anxiety about the lack of dual card slots, and its not so great battery life. I can promise you though, once Nikon makes a Z series camera with dual card slots and a better battery, I will be buying it. After returning the Z6, I bought the Sony A7III. The Sony was good, I liked the amount of custom buttons and overall button/dial placement. The EVF is terrible (if you've never shot with an EVF, it would be fine, but coming from the Z6, it looks like garbage, but still very usable). I had to purchase the battery grip just so I could hold it properly, but I could now use two Z batteries, which was awesome (I shot over 700 photos, and one battery was at 100%, while the other was at 92%). I enjoyed the comfort of knowing my photos were backed up with the dual card slots. The autofocus was very good, but I noticed it missed more often then I would have liked (that could also be user error, obviously). The 10FPS was awesome. I ended up returning the Sony as well, however, due to its size (the grip was way too narrow, and not deep enough to be comfortable, in my opinion), I personally did not like the image quality from the Sony, but again, thats just me, and I had concerns with the durability/weatherproofing. After returning the Sony (and receiving a bigger tax refund then expected), I bought the Nikon D850 and I am in love. It is such an amazing camera, in every way. If you made it this far (I talk a lot, sorry), thanks for reading. If you're ok with a single XQD card, then buy the Z6, I can promise that you will not be disappointed. I am very excited to see what the Nikon Z series has in store for us, and I am really looking forward to the future Nikon S glass. Have a great day, and I hope you enjoy your new camera!
@SkipperGeffen
@SkipperGeffen 5 лет назад
@@MedicRyan18 Actually read it till the end :) Don't worry about writing too much.. I have the same issue. I'm shooting mostly for personal projects so I'm not sure I will have those anxieties you mentioned (hopefully). One thing that bugs me is that every review of the Z6 ends with the same same mantra "it's mostly for nikon shooters already owning nikon glass". As mentioned I at the moment have next to no glass. Should I still consider it? Z glass looks quite expensive
@MedicRyan18
@MedicRyan18 5 лет назад
@@SkipperGeffen In your situation, I would hands down pick up the Nikon Z6 over anything else. I have been a Canon shooter all my life, up until I made the jump to the Nikon Z6, I learned the menus and custom features/buttons pretty quickly, and once you set it up to your specifications, you'll love it. The S (what Nikon is calling the lenses for the Z series) glass, while appearing "cheap" or "not professional" as some reviewers have put it, is amazing. I bought the Z6 kit with the 24-70 f/4 and loved it. It was very sharp, fast at focusing, and I felt that it was built well. You can see in the photos Jared took, the S 35 and 50 lenses are tack sharp, so they would be a good option down the line. I would recommend picking up the Z6 bundle that includes the 24-70 f/4 and the FTZ adapter, I think that would be a great starting point. I honestly cannot wait to see what Nikon does with this series, so I would invest in the Z line now, and build up your collection of S glass as time goes on. I hope this helps.

Just too many shortcomings for me to take the Nikon Z- cameras seriously for my professional work, and I am a former longtime Nikon pro user. . I am sure Photo-Me-Ike you and your fellow Nikon fanboy Jared are very happy here. Still can't touch the overall better performance of the Sonys, sorry. Maybe the next generation Z camera will be better, but by then Sony will have leaped further ahead with its next cameras, and Nikon will be playing catch-up again.

This is your best real-world review since the D500 and perhaps your best ever. I placed my pre-order for my Z6 on October 6th. That was three days before I went to Epcot with my family. I thought it was pretty ironic later when I saw hints on Instagram that the Nikon press event for the Z6 was there. I've been shooting with my Z6 for over a month and I'm very happy though I still think the D500 or D850 are better choices for sports and wildlife. They won't bite you even if you jump in the water. Do you want to test that theory?!? LOL

I got my Z6 on Day 1 and have been incredibly pleased with it, especially in the video realm. I have been using DX wide angles on it and the payoff has been fantastic. Trust me get yourself a Sigma 18-35 f1.8 lens for video purposes and you can do so much. I have been able to film Disney World low light ride footage and it's amazingly low noise and with the stabilization been able to get really smooth footage. I would post it on youtube but I am not really into that scene.

Thanks - What a great video and I appreciate yours and Stephen's work. Got my Z6 on Nov 26, Black Friday weekend deal gave me the FTZ converter at no cost. I bought the kit with the 24 - 70 Z mount lens. Love the results with my F-mount lenses. Used the Z6 along with the D750 and D500 on my work shoots Nov 29 - Dec 2. Of course had to convert to DNG to process in Lightroom as there was no support for Z6 NEF Raw until last week. Since I shoot dog shows at this indoor venue, been shooting there regularly since 2006, it was great to see the low light improvements of the Z6 over the prior generation Nikons. Even with the FTZ converter in use, there was just more light hitting the sensor. Action shots which I would regularly shoot at ISO 3200 on the D750, I could easily get at ISO 2000 or 2500. Plus, I could comfortably raise the shutter speed. Really glad I added the Z6 to my arsenal. And thanks again for this thorough review.

Really good camera... I’ve tested it last week when I accompany my friend when he buy a new camera.. the shop owner was really nice... he let me tested this camera with the native lens of 24-70mm f4 z mount lens... I might change into Nikon mirrorless system in the future...

You got some really amazing shots here Jared. I'm actually quite tempted to buy this camera now because I'm used to Nikon's controls and you seemed to have a blast shooting with it for the same reason.

As an Aviation Photographer, the high point for me would have been that airfield w/ the P-51 Mustangs, T6 Texans and the L-39 jet... (I have many shots of these planes at different airshow events) ... I am a Canon shooter with a lot of L-glass and not yet on the mirrorless train but... it's another great review again by Fro. Great job as always. The girl model, with the vintage clothing, was a stunner. Perfect around those P-51s

Great review. As a video shooter I find the Z6 a much more pleasurable experience to shoot with than the A7III. Sony's terrible EVF, LCD, and unusable peaking are deal killers. Very uninspiring to shoot--especially for the kind of fully MF video shooting I do. Another plus is the IBIS of the Nikon--really superior to Sony. Colors and skin tones are better too--LOVE this camera! A few things are needed for video that firmware can provide. 1. The ability to punch in and check focus while recording video. 2. The ability to have both zebras and peaking simultaneously. Both these things are really essential and would tremendously improve usage for video.

Massive thank you to Fro and Steven for an amazing video. Wow, that was amazing. I feel like I have used the camera already! I was dead set on starting from scratch with a RF series but now I am totally unsure. While the canon lens road-map looks amazing, the size of the lenses for me makes me take pause. I love how small yet razor sharp the Z series lenses are. It also doesn't hurt that the bodies have everything including the kitchen sink (mmm 5 stop IBIS.) I guess the next few months will be very interesting for sure.

I'm LOVING my Z6, coming from a D750. Full frame focus area is a huge bonus. EVF showing what your shot is going to look like ( you can even zoom in to confirm focus) and even better, you can review the shot after you take it in the EVF and even zoom in (press the OK button for a 100% zoom in). I've yet to hear about this feature in any of the Z6 reviews I've watched. When it's sunny out, there's no way you can see what your shot looked like on the LCD. But reviewing in the EVF with your eye so close to the image is like seeing it on a big screen in a dark room. I love the custom quick menus, F buttons and overall feel. Easy to mange the shutter, ISO and aperture on the fly. I picked up a Sigma 85mm f/1.4 art lens and have to say, it far exceeded my expectations. I really don't think it can get any better. If I had to pick the overall best feature of the Z6 I'd have to say the ISO performance. I did night shots two weeks ago in Anza Borrego (desert east of San Diego). With only using the full moon and shooting a steel scorpion (art installation) with a 20 foot tall tail, the 4 second exposure looked like noon (yes, any camera can do this...it's just shutter time) but there wasn't an ounce of grain at ISO 6400. I wish I was able to post the picture in this review but trust me, the low-light is really impressive. Don't hold out waiting for the 2nd generation mirrorless; this one is killer! Thank you Nikkon for only charging $2k. I really feel its a fair price; cheaper than my D750 and a far superiour camera! Thank you Jared for such a great review and I appreciate seeing the before and after images you shot and explaining how you did them. This is the first video of yours I have watched and look forward to seeing more!

This is an amazing camera for sure, but not entirely suited for me, unfortunately. So much of what I shoot is fast action and the D500 (I actually want the crop sensor) focuses faster and more accurately on fast moving subjects. Plus, I really am committed to having two memory cards (I know the likelihood of an XQD card failing is very small). That said, the potential image quality offered by this new Z system is incredible. There will be a version of this camera that I will switch to when these issues are addressed. I know I am dreaming here, but I would love to see a "Z500" complete with a crop sensor. These seems unlikely for a long time, but the next version of this camera will likely force my hand on going completely full frame. It is what it is.

Thank you for the review, Jared. I pre-ordered my Z6 an got it on the release day (11/16). Since then I have loved taking pictures with it to the point i reach for it instead of my iPhone 8 to take a quick picture because I know the result is going to be so much better and turning on snapbridge to transfer a picture or two is not much added work in the chain to get a picture to show on social media. I have ever since I got it, thought it has been fantastic, but all the "reviews" so far have bashed it pretty hard. I don't own a massive amount of previous glass, but I have a couple old ones from my FE days, and they work great with the Z6 and the FTZ adapter. I personally just love how it fits my hand, and to me hat is actually most important since I believe (after testing half a dozen different cameras), that what fits your hand and mind will put you to ease to take better pictures since the technology is good enough for almost all new cameras out there. I got the 24-70 f4 and like the lens, sometimes wanting 2.8, mostly since i shoot low light, but finding out that the Z6 does well even in the ISO 6400-12800 range. I would love to afford buying the Nikon S lenses as they come out but don't think I will be able to and probably will end up either buying used glass or 3rd party.
