Today I'd like to take a comprehensive look at how the brilliant Nikon Z6ii handles astro timelapse. This camera is an astro timelapse beast. I've been amazed at the built in features of this camera relating to shooting timelapse, and in particular how the auto features enable very smooth day to night sequences.
I'll be continuing this theme in a later video where I'll be looking at how I couple the camera with an assortment of motion timelapse gear.
I'm always keen to read your comments below.

Wow Richard, the generosity with which you share information is a credit to you and has massively contributed to shortening the learning curve of astrophotographers such as myself. This video is certainly no exception. In summary, as a Z6 owner would you agree the only features I'm missing compared to the Mk II are 1) 4k video mode, 2) ability to plug in external power supply. Many thanks.
@nightscapeimages.richard
@nightscapeimages.richard 2 года назад
Thanks so much for your support Greg. Well the original Z6 does have the ability to record a 4k timelapse video but not at the same time as shooting RAWS. In the Z6 they made it possible to do both at once. Yes the ability to plug in usb power is the other one that relates to timelapse. Other than that: Two card slots and extended shutter speeds beyond 30 seconds are the others I can think of.

Thanks a lot for your new video one more time Richard. I have the Z6 and Z50, and I'm wondering if I can't use the same parameters and settings to make my timelapses... refering to the configuration of the timer inside the Z6II and the settins that you recomend on the "P" mode of the Z6II... its different about Z6 and Z50? Can i use the same settings that you recommend in this video?¿

An excellent summary, thank you! I think the Shots per Interval is to allow for HDR time lapses where the camera is set to take say 3 bracketed shots automatically, then Shots/Interval is also set to 3. I think that would be useful mostly for daytime time-lapses with lots of contrast and dynamic range. And yes, an advantage of mirrorless cameras is their much more sensitive light meters allowing readings when it gets dark. I found DSLRs would stall out at about a 6 second shutter speed in Auto then just underexpose after that. You had to manually override once it got into twilight. Or use the TimeLapse View. Mirrorless cameras mostly negate ramping intervalometers like the View. Except they do allow smoothly ramping the interval as well as the exposure. Clear skies!

This is great! However in program mode my camera defaults to widest aperture if dull light. Am I correct in saying there’s no way to “limit” widest aperture in p mode? For example I’d love my 20mm G nikkor to only open up to f2.8, not 1.8 which it seems to go to automatically? Appreciate any guidance if you have a moment.
@nightscapeimages.richard
@nightscapeimages.richard Год назад
Yes that is correct, and it's something I'd like to be able to limit as well. If I want to limit the F stop then I'll shoot in Aperture Priority mode as all other parameters are the same as P mode.

a nice video..but I am still confused about the INTERVAL.........if I set the camera for a 20" shot ( I do startrails....).the gap between one photo and the next will be 22"...correct ?...so between the beginning of the shot and the next will be a total of 42"...correct ??????...sorry about my confusion.......please clarify....
@nightscapeimages.richard
@nightscapeimages.richard Год назад
Thanks for watching Vincent. No in that case your interval would be 22 seconds. 20 second exposure plus the 2 second delay between shots. I'm not sure how you calculated 42 seconds.

Great video. One feature that I use for both time lapse and my regular night photography is that the camera always goes to infinity focus when the camera is in autofocus and the power is turned off and back on. I find that it is always right on infinity focus after I power cycle the camera with either my 24-70 f/4 or my 20mm f1.8 lens attached. I never manual focus the stars anymore because all I have to do is power cycle the camera and it resets to infinity focus.

Nice vid mate! I own a Z6 and Z6II and the internal intervalometer is quite tricky and ruined a few timelapse i shot too. Thats why i use an external one and process the pictures with LRT and LR. but i think after watching this i will try the internal one again. What about whitebalance? do you lave it on auto or set in on manual?
@nightscapeimages.richard
@nightscapeimages.richard Месяц назад
The thing to remember with the Nikon interval timer is that the time selected includes the shutter speed and the gap between shots. So for example if you want to shoot at 15 second shutter speed then you might set the interval to be 18. This means you have the 15 seconds plus another 3 seconds between each exposure. If I'm shooting a day to night timelapse I'll often set the white balance to auto .. it does a pretty good job. If it's only night then I'll set it manually to about 4800k.

Dear friend I had several of the problems you highlighted in your video. I was very scared of the possibility of recording a video separately from the images captured in Time Lapse RAW. I had no idea this was possible. I always thought that there was a setting to get the Raw Time Lapse files and if I wanted to record a video I would have to use the other setting present in the Menu. This was incredible. Thank you for your help and for sharing this information.

Very interesting video. Note that the z6 and z7 mk1 also get the smooth exposure functionality probably following a FW update. The only issue is I think is that they can t be connected while shooting to an external bank… so I will make some test of duration à perhaps will need to buy a grip allowing 2 batteries. It will cost me less than changing the body for a Mk2 version. I will try with my 20mm f1.8 afs.

I think this is normal when using different brand lenses on other cameras. Most mirrorless camera systems have significant vignette and aberration controls built in to their own systems.

Greetings from México. Excellent video and very instructive your information. Just a question, I have seen other youtubbers talk about the "dirty" screen of the Nikon z5 and z6 to make time lapses. Let me explain, they show how, in photo mode, at night the LCD screen looks full of red or blue dots. But in video mode the screen looks clean. Does the same thing happen with the z6ii?? We wait for your reply. Thanks

Thanks so much for watching. I don't see this issue but I understand what you mean . .I think it helps to have a fast aperture lens to assist with seeing dimly lit images in the dark. I typically use f1.8 lenses even though I'll often stop down to f2.8. I use both Z6 and Z6ii

The Nikon Z 20 f1.8 is the best FF ultra wide or wide zoom or prime for astro on the market. The Sony E 20 f1.8G is also pretty good if you are a Sony user. Very little tangential astigmatism, and essentially zero coma at f2.8. Unfortunately, the Nikon Z 14-24 f2.8 has very pronounced tangential astigmatism, and the coma doesn't go away until f5 or even f5.6 depending on conditions. Not sure what lenses you used in each sequence, but there is very obvious and highly pronounced tangential astigmatism @11:46 and @23:50 and @26:11. Its fine; its not a dealbreaker. But you pretty much get that same amount of TA with the Z 14-30 f4, and both equally need to be stopped down to f5 or f5.6 to get rid of the coma. This makes them basically dead even for astro, except with the Z 14-30 f4 you get that extra 6mm of reach, it is far lighter and works better with less expensive sliders and motion rigs, and obviously the lens itself costs a lot less. Neither one of them come close to the Z 20 f1.8 for astro, however. Its a paper wad at a gun fight. The Z6/II, after the firmware update that allowed for focus keeping after power/sleep cycle, is a brilliant astro camera. I do wish the focus peaking was a little better. A firmware update to add the "starlight view" and "warm colors" features from the Z9 would make it perfection.
@nightscapeimages.richard
@nightscapeimages.richard Год назад
Thanks heaps for your comprehensive insights. I have tested a Z14-24 f2.8 and did find it a little worse than what I expected .. so I went ahead and bought the Laowa 15mm f2 .. well that lens is a lot worse than the Nikon. The sequences at 11:46 and 26:11 is with that Laowa lens. The one at 23:56 was with the older F mount 14-24 f2.8. I find with timelapse that you can get away a bit more with bad corners as the corners are cropped a little bit anyway at 16x9 aspect ratio. After all of that I did eventually buy a Nikon Z14-24 f2.8 and it was a lot better than the one I tested . .so I assume there are variations in quality with them. Thanks again for watching.

Hi Richard. I am posting here in the hopes that you will see this and offer some suggestions. I loved your video, Astro Beast and have done a day-night timelapse using your settings. It was great. I want to use that same function - Interval Timer Shooting - to capture the upcoming total solar eclipse. The fly in the ointment, however, is when the solar filter has to come off and go back on after totality. Would you please do a video or answer this question on the solar eclipse? Thanks
@nightscapeimages.richard

That's a very difficult assignment. To be honest I don't do solar photography so I have no experience with solar eclipse ... but I'd assume you won't be able to get a smooth transition due to the need to remove the solar filter.

On the Z6ii it's only 24mpx so you don't use too much space. I often use 64gb cards and there is plenty of room plus extra.

I shoot a lot of storm time lapses with my D850 and Z6. The interval is typically between 1 and 3 seconds. I set up the shot and much of the time the storm will move from one side of the frame to the other. The problem I have is that I can’t really tell when the “subject” of the shot has moved out of the frame since the LCD is blacked out during the time lapse. I have seen other brands (specifically, Sony) that don’t black out the LCD so it’s easy to see when the clouds move out of the shot. Do you know if there is any way to keep the LCD on during a time lapse on a Nikon?
@nightscapeimages.richard
@nightscapeimages.richard Год назад
That's a very good question Richard. What I've found is that the screen blacks out when the interval time is pretty close to the actual shutter speed . .in other words .. there isn't enough time to show the image before the next shot is being taken. So I did some testing and found that 4 sec seems like the minimum interval that shows a preview . .assuming you are using about 1/10th shutter speed. (That's what I tested). Then I tried a 1 sec shytter speed and had to be at least 5 sec interval to show the image .. (Very briefly on screen). I'm wondering if you've seen the Sony cameras shooting in S&Q mode . .. which is basically video mode at a slow frame rate such as 2 frames per second which they can do.

My question is, I would like to use the LRtimelapse pro timer with the Nikon z6ii and use it with the electronic shutter, so i don't need to use the mechanical shutter. So is it possible to use an external intervalometer while shooting on silent photography mode? Thanks

@nightscapeimages.richard 2 года назад
Sorry about the confusion. The Zeapon Timelapse Trigger uses rear curtain flash sync to control the slider or pan and tilt head. That's where the restriction is with electronic shutter. There is no issue using an external intervalometer in silent shutter mode with this camera.

Hi Richard thanks first of all for your great Vids, can I shoot a question, how did you calculate the Zeapon heads settings for that Milkyway follow shot.
@nightscapeimages.richard
@nightscapeimages.richard Год назад
Thanks so much for watching. Well to be honest I roughly guessed the path the milky way would take .. based on my understanding and past experience of it's movement across the sky. You could get some idea by using photopills and noting what time the galactic core is in a certain area of the sky. Then I just set the Zeapon gear and camera to move via keyframes in the Zeapon app. Using a wide angle lens there is always room for error as it doesn't have to be perfect to keep the core in the frame. Hope that helps.
@ronawood
@ronawood Год назад
I've got a question about shutter speed in P mode. In your example you mentioned an interval of 15 seconds. Once the light starts dropping off at night, what stops the shutter speed to keep increasing to a 30 second exposure before adjusting the ISO? Does setting the interval someone limit the shutter speed to not go longer than that?
@nightscapeimages.richard
@nightscapeimages.richard Год назад
That is what happens if you check the Interval Priority checkbox .. it won't go above the shutter speed selected. If you leave this unchecked it will sometimes increase the shutter speed to try and get a correct exposure.

Thanks for watching Andrew. I wasn't actually setting the aperture to f8 . .I was simply stating that quite possibly the bright sunlight exposure will cause the camera to choose an aperture of f8 whilst in P mode . .Does that make sense. ... it could choose f5.6 or f6.3 . .it all depends on the ambient light levels .. remember it's all automatically selected. You are correct that I can set the aperture in Aperture priority mode or manual mode but not P mode.

Richard, Fantastick well-done video on this subject. However, I think having a .PDF file with all the different settings would be awesome to keep on my phone for reference. Of course Downloadable. I have not looked yet, but I have a Z7II, I'm hoping to see the same parameters as the Z6II. Also, couple of questions. You mentioned No Flicker, with Smooth Exposure setting, but in some of the time-lapses, you can see what almost looks like lighting in different frames. Are you light painting during any of these Time-lapses? At 30:15 the time-lapse starts to move to a darker part of the sky and the large shed looks like it is lit-up, How did you do that?
@nightscapeimages.richard
@nightscapeimages.richard 2 года назад
Thanks a lot Leon. Yes the Z7ii has the same features. The light changes you are referring to on some of those timelapses are passing cars lighting the scene. With that final scene I already had the light on and in place .. when it got dark they took over and lit the scene.

Hi Richard, I want to shoot satellites @ 1 sec or 1/2 sec shutter speed and have a minimum gap (dark time)between frames of the moving object. I think the Nikon needs an interval of at least .4 secs longer than the shutter speed in order not to skip frames. So in my use cases intervals would need to be set at 1 sec for the 1/2 sec exp and 2 sec for 1 sec exposures (don’t believe there is an interval setting for 1.5 secs). How long can the Timelapse movie be using these settings in Timelapse movie mode? Also, how long can Timelapse movie be in Interval mode with these settings? I’ve heard that the max length of movies at those settings may be very short and just want to confirm that. Thanks for your great videos!
@nightscapeimages.richard
@nightscapeimages.richard 7 месяцев назад
Well first up I haven't done anything like you're suggesting. All of my timelapses are longer shutter speeds than that as I'm always shooting in low light situations. I know in some Nikon cameras in timelapse movie mode you have limitations with total duration but this won't be a problem with Interval Shooting mode. Although you may have problems if you are shooting a Movie as well as the raw files. I haven't seen any definitive answer on this anywhere online and I don't see myself doing something with lots of very short shutter speeds anytime soon. I guess you'll just have to try it and see what you get.

Now the question I am toiling with is whether to use Aperture mode or Program mode. If I dont fix the aperture, I run the risk of changing the DOF during the course of my timelapse. Will the Z6-II work as well in A mode for shooting timelapses ? Hi there, first of all I’d like to say that this is an amazing explanation about using the time laps mode build inside the camera. I’d like to try this feature out. Especially for nighttime photography. In the past I was using an external device, where I was putting the camera into manual mode and the shutter speed into bulb mode. But now I keep asking myself „how can I control the shutter speed in manual mode?“ Maybe you can give me an advice. Greetings from Germany. Michael
@nightscapeimages.richard
@nightscapeimages.richard Год назад
Hello Michael. Thanks so much for watching. Well if you want the camera to control the shutter speed automatically then you could use Aperture Priority mode .. and perhaps set the iso to Auto ISO. That will fix the Aperture but the other 2 parameters will be flexible. This is often used for day to night timelapse. If you just want to do a fixed timelapse with all the parameters set. Then set your camera to Manual and simply dial in the required settings. Don't set it to Bulb mode. . the shutter speed is included as part of the Interval in the Interval Timer. (In-built Intervalometer). So if you want a 10 second shutter speed then set the interval to 12 or 13 seconds. This will give you the 10 seconds plus a couple of seconds before it takes the next shot. If that's what you want simply set the shutter speed of the camera to 10 seconds.

Hi again, Richard! I have watched this video two or three times now, but I don’t know if you mentioned how to set the White Balance for a day to night timelapse. Would you just leave it on what you would usually use for daytime, in my case Auto Natural Light? @nightscapeimages.richard
@nightscapeimages.richard Месяц назад
Hello Jennifer. Normally when I shoot my nightscape photography I'll set the white balance to between 4500-48ook. But when I'm shooting a day to night timelapse I'll often set it to auto white balance and deal with the colour shift later on. I don't like the daytime portion to look too "cold" so that's my logic. It is always a trade off when shooting day to night. The night sky can over-expose in relation to the foreground which is why I often set up lights on the foreground to help balance this. Another option is to shoot with a crescent moon so that it helps to light the foreground.

Well a lot of people will use Aperture Priority mode for day to night. That's the easiest. You can try Program mode as I've had good success with that also . .especially with native Nikon Z lenses. You will need to choose an interval, but a lot of the other settings can be set to auto. When setting up for a day to night you always have to have in the back of your mind what the ideal settings should be for the night part of the sequence. From there you can set the maximum iso and interval (which includes shutter speed) so that when it gets dark the images are not too underexposed.

I also see one advantage in Nikon is charging over USB -C during shooting, while Sony a7 IV doesn’t allow this. What do you think? P.S current camera: D5200 (all lenses I have are for crop cameras).

Both excellent cameras. I'm pretty sure the Sony A74 can be powered by USB-C while shooting. Personally I prefer the ergonomics of the Nikon system over the Sony.

@@nightscapeimages.richard I also hope so, but Sony doesn’t allow this. Maybe with future updates it will do it. Can you charge Z6 II with powerbank? And if there is possibility to put inside power adapter instead of battery and connect it to 230V power socket at home?

@@alekszaborski I think you can charge the battery with a powerbank .. but you'd need a fairly powerful one to achieve this.

Hello Richard, how are you? I bought a Nikon Z6 II at the end of 2022. I have a question that I believe you can clarify (I wrote to Nikon Americas and received an answer that was not very clear). Let's go: I take several pictures. I stop taking pictures and don't turn off the camera. When taking new photos, the last one appears in the camera's viewfinder (not the LCD -- I shoot very little on the LCD). I have to press the shutter button to "wake up" the camera and make the last picture disappear from the viewfinder. That is, it has a delay to start shooting again. Have you ever had this situation? Is it related to electronic trigger? Or the flicker reduction? Thank you for your attention and congratulations on the videos and your work. Hug.

@nightscapeimages.richard Год назад
Hi Jorge. I haven't seen the same thing that you mention, however, I do find that the camera does go into sleep mode .. I assume to save battery power and has to be woken up again by half pressing the shutter button. But I haven't seen the previous image in the viewfinder. I wouldn't think it has anything to do with electronic shutter. Perhaps your image preview is set to a very long duration ..???

Hi Richard, brilliant video and very informative. I'm especially interested in the time lapse you did using the Zeapon pan and tilt heads to follow the Milky Way. Do the Zeapon heads or associated app have a star tracking capability? If not how did you maintain the consistent rate of movement throughout the night to remain locked on the stars? I'm looking for either a dedicated star tracker to improve my Milky Way photos but would prefer it comes with dual pan and tilt functionality for daytime sequences unrelated to star tracking.
@nightscapeimages.richard
@nightscapeimages.richard 2 года назад
Thanks for looking Marcus. No the Zeapon gear doesn't do star tracking. I programed that move manually by guess to keep the milky way in the frame. You should look at the Benro Polaris. www.benro-polaris.com/

I have the Polaris and will be experimenting with that in August. The actual shooting will likely need to be independent of the tracking which means the stars will be sharp but it will likely end up with a blurry foreground as the Polaris will be moving during the shoot. However, being a timelapse, you might just get away with it.

Bugger, You've made this video a year too late Richard. If you would of told me how good the Nikon was when we were shooting together on the Tessellated pavement in Tasmania I wouldn't of bought the Sony A7R3 as my 2nd camera to my Canon EOS R5.
@nightscapeimages.richard
@nightscapeimages.richard 2 года назад
Oh well the secondhand camera market is full of such purchases Keith. They all play the catch up game as time progresses. So which camera do you prefer out of the 2 you own ..???? I would have thought the R5 would eat the A7R3 for breakfast.
@keithmahoney494
@keithmahoney494 2 года назад
@@nightscapeimages.richard Hi Richard, they are so different and each suits night and day shoots differently. Because of that I love to use the R5 with the 15-35 and 24-70 f2.8 zooms for day time landscapes plus the sensor noise and dynamic range at night is a problem. The Sony is ISO invariant plus I solely use Prime lenses with it, which are much less expensive than Canon (Canon doesn't make your beloved 20mm focal length in any f stop), plus there are lots of 3rd party primes available for the Sony and the button layout and remote control I find is better suited for night time. So each has its purpose and finally the Sony and its lenses are much lighter to carry around in the dark. Richard, having strayed slightly to the dark side, Nikon maybe a bit TOO far.

I´ve got a problem with the exposure meassurment. When doing a day to night timelapse I have the problem, that the exposure meassurment doesn´t increase the ISO at a certain level of light. The allowed maximum auto-ISO is 12800 but still the camera get stuck at 20s, f2.8 and ISO1250, where as a decent exposued image would need ISO 6400. Did I miss a setting or what´s the problem? Is the problem that the exposure meassurment is limited to a specific amount of low-level light? Thank for the help.
@nightscapeimages.richard
@nightscapeimages.richard Год назад
Yes the exposure measurement will be impacted if your ambient light levels are high .. even if a close foreground subject is over lit. And don't forget the impact of light pollution in this as well. Remember, the auto camera settings are measuring the whole scene. The camera is telling you that f2.8 at 20 sec and iso1250 is better than iso6400. And in theory .. this is correct. But I do understand why you may be wanting more brightness in the sky part of your image.

Hello, as i am a beginner I do not understand why not to make everything easier and instead of taking 900 or more photos and processing it to a timelapse, why not to shoot instead a 4k video over the whole time and then make a timelapse (fast motion) out of that? Whats the difference?
@nightscapeimages.richard
@nightscapeimages.richard 2 года назад
That would be fine during the daytime, but the camera can't get enough exposure in the dark to shoot that type of video. Remember I'm often using 10-15 sec shutter speeds to get the correct exposure. Video at 25 frames per second has no hope of achieving that.
