Nikon Z8 for Filmmaking and Photographers: NOT what I expected!! - Sample Video and Images. 

Made it through. Nikon is definitely back in the game - there is no competitive camera at this price point that gives nearly as much as this the Z8 - literally it goes head to head with the A1 - a camera that is $2500 more lol. Most importantly is the Z S line glass, which once you use them, you know that they are the best in the game - build quality, focus breathing suppression and of course corner to corner IQ. The Z mount itself has physical dimensions 55mm by 16mm (diameter and flange respectively) that allow for lens design that the E mount simply cannot match - this is physics - not an opinion. The Z8 is the best hybrid full frame camera bar none for under $5500 and it is literally $1500 less than that - and the only camera at $5500 that competes is the Nikon Z9 - as stated you have to go all the way to $6500 to compete with the Sony A1, but then you are stuck with the inferior E mount - a mount that was literally an APS-C mount adapted to full frame. It was a rough ride for a minute, but Nikon is back in full force - can't wait for the 35mm 1.2 that should drop in the next few months - another lens that will be class leading in the market. -PD

The Z8 is a beast of a camera, Nikon knocked it out of the park with this one, Sony just can’t compete with it.

The Z8 is a damn good camera that has excellent AF. However, new users or short-term reviewers need to realize that out of the box, the AF will have to be tweaked. Often short-term reviewers don't take the time to learn it and give it a negative review. The bottom line for the price is that it's hard to beat a Z8.

Like the summation after a weekend with it. The Z9 was pricey and big for too many people however, Nikon showcased the performance here and today we are no benefiting from what that camera has done. As a former A7R V owner, I can tell you the Z8 is about the same when it comes to focusing, the Nikon system is a bit more complicated on the photo side but, much can be said about many cameras when you move beyond the basics. I agree the video side is a fantastic, so many codecs on offer. I posted a video I took in 8k RAW and the footage was really great straight out of camera, it is just so great. The Z8 is certainly a camera you can keep and work with for a long time.

The Z8 Spec are just insane and crazy... better than its competitors.

Good video and on point. I'm on the D850 still and can't wait to go Z8 or even Z9 for the video upgrade alone with the auto focus functionality. Though what can't be expressed enough is Nikon Glass as well.

I made it through sitting here in New Delhi India We are thinking of investing in a camera system and we feel that for fast turnaround jobs requiring low light shoots there s option but to go with Sony. Slog 3 graded with Phantom luts is phenomenal However Nikon is too tempting with its colors & lenses output especially the lens you used : 14-24 f/2.8. Also the TICO / NRAW is perfect for cinematic kind of shoots. Sony colors are just that Sony colors colors : not too bad but neither great. Auto focus shouldn't be downplayed in creating cinematic images when using f/1.2 lenses in fast moving or extremely low light situations So while Nikon has those mouth watering 0.95 or, 85 f/1.2 it's autofocus needs one more generation to be there with Sony. It's a difficult decision . Thanks for your video. It helped us think.

How would you compare this to the Sony A7 IV in terms of video, low light, image quality, auto focus. Any idea?

Everyone stays sleeping on Lumix, Sony this and Canon that, Nikon and Lumix having a Lowkey comeback

Long time Nikon user here. Own a Z6, Z6ii, Z7, Z8, Z9. If you're already on Sony you would be insane to switch. Shooting internal ProRes HQ or Raw adds zero value in almost all use cases. You're best bet is to shoot the Z8 in h.265 and ETTR as far as you can w/o clipping. I'm usually at 2-3 stops over which makes preview on the back useless since you can't load a LUT on there. On my Atomos I have a couple of LUTs for +1, +2, and +3 over to properly monitor this, but you can do just fine with the camera if you're watching your waveforms. Unfortunately N-Log is very young and needs A LOT of work and the progress is very slow here. The Nikon official LUT is pretty trash so you'll need to know what you're doing to get the most out of this system.

Best camera on the market but too expensive for a minor hobbyist like me.

Let me think! First of all, I would say that you guys talk to much about the auto focus on Sony that you forget to point out the most important qualities that really make the Nikon 8 be best and better. I my self wish I have a Nikon Z8, unfortunately I could only get a Sony FX30 and it wast months before the Z8 came out. The reason I got it, was because I needed another camera that would give a more natural color like my Nikon cameras in the past being a cinema line. Guess what, Sony is still behind that color science, and let me tell you, I have used my friends full frame Sonys lll and IV, color not that good and noise, too noticeable compared to my Nikon D750 when filming video. The quality on my D750 is what got my clients to stick with me because they were just so happy with their video. With these few negatives on Sony, I would say, please, make sure you learn how to use the camera first to give a more honest and detailed review. Sony is good, but make sure to not to point only one factor that makes people forget the real reason why they need a new camera when they can choose from better options. Soon, I will be using my Z8, when I buy it. and hope to have the opportunity to share my videos with you.

I have the z9 and the Fuji xh2s and I find the autofocus is the same in all situations and I don’t find that the Nikon z9 is any way better than Fujifilm
