Hey Everyone! I’m certainly happy to see these update changes for the z8 What features are still missing tho let me know ! Thanks so much for watching !
We want to be able to assign subject detect to buttons, Make play button, zoom in and out buttons programmable,. These three buttons are currently under utilized since one button can be set up to perform all the three task. More importantly make all the buttons programmable without restriction of features, give us the freedom to choose what we assign to each button.
Thanks for another helpful & interesting video. Question if you get a chance. How do you keep settings in sync between your Z8 and Z9? Re-entering all those by hand would be unnecessarily tedious, as would keeping track of changes. Since processors are the same and firmware/functions are largely similar, it would be great if settings saved on one could be imported to the other - with notifications for any that don't transfer. Possible?
Updating now. I’ll be out and about in a local park tomorrow morning to test bird subject detection on my Z8. Nikon continues to offer ever increasing value to its customers. Thanks, Ricci, for providing a brief overview of what’s new!
Great news, from the comments I've seen there are no issues so I'll do my Z8 later, some really cool stuff there I think I'll use. One thing I would like to be able to do (and still really don't understand why my Z cameras can't) is to output in-camera multiple exposures in RAW (As far as I am aware Z's only do in JPEG). Used to love doing this, you never really knew what you were going to get but I produced some great stuff this way. After all, my 17yr old D200 has always been able to do this.
@@RicciTalksI also read something about a longer pre capture time ? You didn’t mention it so maybe I read that wrong on Nikon rumours announcement and details . Thanks 🙏🏻
Great to see some new improvements and features. The big miss for video was not adding shutter angle so you can lock your fps to a shutter angle. To many times I have quickly switched from 24 to 60 fps and for got to change the shutter from 48 to 120. Or to have the ability for go from a 180• angle to 270• or 135• to get a different effect without having to do math.
@@RicciTalks that’s one thing that is holding it back from being a legitimate video beast of a camera. Open gate and anamorphic support would be great too. A vector scope as well. Would be nice. Love that it has wave forms.
Great video. Trying to decide between the Z8 and the Z7 II. This video really helped me understand some of the complexities, options and features of the Z8. I am leaning towards the Z8. My go-to camera is currently the D810 as it has been for years. Moving into mirrorless has been on hold for some time as I wait somewhat impatiently for Nikon to release “the” camera. Subscribed.
Hi Ricci Great Video as usual very informative & to the point . Die hard nikon fans who were feeling let down for a few years are well & truly thrilled with the Z8 & Z9 and all the new firmware updates . The bird detection mode is amazing ( i used it on Z9) . More importantly glass like the 400 2.8 , 600 PF etc have given Nikon a definite edge espy in wildlife photography. However there is one feature which i think could be added through a firmware update & will really help in landscape / candid / city scapes etc - feature required is as follows : Display the overblown highlights as zebra stripes in the viewfinder / lcd even as we adjust the exposure - this will be a killer feature .Sony has this & many pros swear by this feature . What is surprising is that this is available in Video mode in the Z8/9 , why can't this be enabled for stills? It will save a lot of time in terms of shooting pics with the right exposures . I have written this many times to nikon but to no avail. Can you with your nikon influencer status - help in getting this feature incorporated in the next update .
Most excellent! You didn't mention the feet/meter scale in manual focus now shows the distance, yummy! I too am SO glad they gave it the delayed shutter option, I use it all the time on my D850 and have missed it in the Z8.
Hi Ricci, cheers for the updates, as always, appreciative of your efforts. Would you perhaps mention a couple points yo your stakeholders at Nikon wrt FW, please? A couple features I think a lot of people would like to have is 1.) pre-capture in raw, and personally, 2.) I would not mind having the same MF eye-detect as what I have in my Zf. These two updates for both the z8 and z9 would be super. Appreciate your comments on these questions.
Hi Ricci, thanks for the valuable information on the z8. As a newbie moving up from a z5 I've been an avid follower. Interestingly, yesterday was photographing swallows and did get some great shots (lots of blurry ones too!), including awesome ones of a swallow attacking an Australian black shouldered kite! And today have the update installed so will have to check it out and see how much better I fare. Thanks!
Outstanding update! If you are looking for new video ideas, how about showing how to setup the viewfinder to simulate optical viewfinder which you mentioned in your last chat with Seth and Matt. Cheers!
I’d love some of these items for the Zf, including the thicker focus box border, a bird af setting, and (specifically for the Zf), auto iso assigned to the C setting on the iso dial. Fantastic update, well done Nikon!
Thanks, appreciate the heads-up. Downloaded the firmware today, but yet to try it out. Looking forward to checking out Bird Subject detection and single button to change AF-area mode. Also, Auto Capture will finally reveal what animal is digging a hole in my garden! Fox or badger!
Great video. Last night I updated my Z8 to Vers.2.0 One thing I noticed that I was unsure of. In the AutoCapture setup, under detection, I only see 5 options, the bird option is not there. I also noticed in your video at 4.19 it was the same. Is this correct ? For normal shooting there are 6 options which include birds. I would have thought birds would be an important option for the auto capture.
The new option to return to 100% zoom with manual lenses when pressing the shutter could be added to every camera, specially the zf. Should be a feature of the camera since its release
I have been loving my Z8 since I got it and thiw fw update makes it almost perfect. I say almost because my dream is still the pre release with raw files :P
Love the addition of cycle mode - would love them to implement a way of customising mode combinations and allow flicking through e.g. Single and Pinpoint, Continuous & custom area 1, continuous and 3d tracking etc. Would be an amazing addition
I would like an option under the "Expose for the highlights" metering mode. I have not tested it in the Z 8 yet, but the Z 7ii and Z 7 would take an individual peak highlight potentially of just 1 photosite size and treat that as 11,111,111,111,111 (the highest binary exposure value in a 14 bits camera - or "white", as in "no colour, no details"). Between several of these twinkles in the image we do not need detail, necessarily. And a handful of them can force exposure down to between 2 and 3 EV seemingly unused highlights. I know, there's extremely high EV values in there, but in general not enough to blow out detail. So if I could set a parameter that, say, relates to minimum photosite diameter to take into account, or minimum amount of photosites in the image, then I have better "blacks" as Adobe call them.
What I'm still missing is the removal of 5x4 crop mode. I'm guessing there may be some hardware restrictions to add that mode back. Of course you have the option to use the grid type (d16 in the new firmware 2.0) for framing and crop later. The downside is that composing with the grid framing can get cluttered. So it would be nice to have an option to have some overlay and just darken the image outside the framing grid. It would be really cool if you could pass this suggestion to Nikon, @RicciTalks . :-)
Excellent upgrade. I’m still waiting for three features though. A change to Focus Shift shooting to allow the start and end to be defined rather than start plus number of images. Secondly, Insect detection and tracking would be useful as I tend to shoot butterflies in flight. Thirdly, how about 30 and 60 fps in RAW
I am wondering if pixel shift of 4-8 shots could be used for in astrophotography as a simple replacement of stacking. More shots would probably lead to moving stars.
I loved your pixel shift images, Ricci. Any chance you could print some of these and compare the 180 megapixel images with the 45 megapixel images printed. It might prevent me from coveting a medium format sensor. (grinning)
There’s a few key reason Self timer fires the green af light Self timer is in photo menu banks not custom settings banks Self timer cnt be custom assigned as well as exposure delay can
Got to say, I was kind of annoyed, feeling like Nikon are holding back the Z8 on purpose, but I guess it really just took a bit longer to get these features to the Z8, for some reason. Super happy with the update, now all that's missing is RAW pre-release capture.
Great and helpful video, thank you! Can you explain more why exposure delay mode is so much better than self timer? It sure offers more and shorter time options, and you don't have to touch your shutter mode, but you wouldn't want exposure delay on a series anyways, would you? What else is better?
Hello, your videos are very good, I ask, because the Z9, which is the top of the range, does not stand out in functions, I made a great investment in that camera and in that sense Nikon has disappointed me by giving the z8 more functions, such as skin softening
I would like a menu item to alter the front-back distance range of the switch on the Z lens with lens-specific recall in the camera. I would want "Full" to remain "Full", but the other one option adaptable from default to my choice. Say, you use the Z 105/2.8S macro lens in your studio as portrait lens (it's fabulous for that). My options on this lens are either (1) "Full" or (2) "0.29m..0.5m" (the closest macro range - 11.4"..19.7"). In studio, or other use cases, it would help me if I could alter (2) into, say, 1.2m..2.5m (47.2"..98.4" - A US photographer would replace this by 4'..8'). Or imagine a bird image collector [1] and a very long tele. They may want to limit to, say, between 3m and 10m, when shooting songbirds. In lower light, in lower contrast, when both happen at the same time, hunting can happen and the camera can more easily find the subject using recognition AI AF when I also can assign a camera button to the nearest focusing point that I can press, without having to have stored a certain distance in the first place. In the case of the Z 8, the hunting may happen when the subject is really difficult and I expect it already. No problem. The workaround, though ... could help me more. The ability to modify (2) also reduces hunting time on the rare occasion it might happen. [1] fun intended
We are nearing the end of May and no pixel shift firmware update for the Z9, if perhaps the video portion of the Z9 is stopping this upgrade for me personally I don’t need video and would happily lose video for pixel shift. I would even be prepared to pay for this upgrade!
Nice information.I just updated my Z8 and found that in auto capture mode I can not see bird ditection mode but i can see only auto, pppl animal and vehicle mode.. What could be the reason?
Thanks Ricci. It's a shame Nikon has done this. Since the Z9 and Z8 are sibling bodies, I would have thought we Z9 users could have had an update as well.
I think it’s evident with this release that the Z8 and the Z9 get the same features just a different times rather than releasing all the updates at the same time.
Great video Ricci. Not sure why you had such a bee in your bonnet about exposure delay. On shutterless, mirrorless camera there is no difference to using the timer, due to no moving parts, unless you say there is a difference. I look forward to hearing your comments
At the risk of sounding pessimistic, I think we don't have further chances of getting (1) 30 fps on RAW still shooting, (2) RAW precapture and (3) faster buffer clearing with certain cards which will be clearly mentioned by the company.
For me this was a very useful video which I found very interesting. As I am a z7II user I would welcome these on to the Z7II. Does the ability of the cpu on the Z7II preclude us having this firmware update? Again very clear and useful explanation; thanks.
Crazy question for the NIKON development team: Is it possible to combine Pixel shift and focus shift together? Imagine you have 32 exposures to get 180 MP and additionally with 300 shots. OK, the CF-Express card could explode :
Hello. Has anyone had problems with the Godox triggers since updating to 2.0? My XproII and X2T don't seem to work now. I have used the V1 as a transmitter and that works fine. All of them work with my Z9. Thanks for any insights or suggestions.
Did it improve AF on the human eye? Was issue when AF focuses on eye leashes resolved? I have this issue on my Zf on 85mm at 1.8 on 20-30% of pictures depending on face type and brightness of the eye.
50.2K 👍 no 🐱 shutter ☹️ What lenses do you like for pixel-shift high resolution images? Nice updates (Z9 shortly, please), any word on the secret 35mm f1.2??? 😊
The lenses Iv used so far are the 14-24 135mm & 600mm pf Hence why I had them on the table with me In the original longer cut video I showed examples from alll 3 lenses but the video was abit too long 😂
@@RicciTalks For macro and astro photography, would it be possible to pixel shift and focus stack? I'm wondering in which order that might be done. Stack, then combine shifted or the other way round. I can imagine lots of memory needed, but also some wondrous images forthcoming. Nikon is really firing on all cylinders. Great time to be into photography. 🙂
Hello, how are the pixel shift files handled for stitching? Do I need to use NX Studio, and does it create a new NEF 180mpx file which I can then import into Capture One or Lightroom? Thanks, much appreciated!
Hi! I have a question about the pixel shift feature. What is the fastest shutterspeed it can handle? I'm worried about motion blurr. Can it be countered with a fast shutterspeed?
How come the Nikon d800, d810, and d850 allow multi exposure in one raw file, but the Z cameras cannot? They save them as individual raw files instead.
It seems Lightroom is not supporting NEFX file from Z8 perfectly, every time I switch to Develop mode, the NEFX image will zoom into the center, then never be able to zoom out and get the full image again, not usable for now. Did you encounter similar issue? Thanks!
Thanks for the video Ricci, quick Q is pixel shift option able to record Raw ? - or can it be used to record images in JPG, RAW and Heif ?. Does pre-capture only capture JPG's still ?
