Nikon Z9 | Landscape Photography | Winter camping with Photography Gear - DSLR better in SNOW?

Snowshoe, camping, and landscape photography in freezing temperatures. What gear works well in the frozen alpine forest. Is the Z9 too much camera to be backpacking for a multi day camping trip? Is the Nikon DSLR D850 to old to keep up with the advantages the Mirrorless Z9 has over it?!

Totally. I usually bring a hand grinder, fresh roasted beans and a stovetop espresso maker. To save on weight I pre ground the coffee and drank it black :)

A winter wonderland. Looks like fun to snowshoe during the day, but I draw the line with camping out in the cold. 🥶

They sell dew heaters. They plug right into a USB port. I use the for night phoyography. I also thought about hanging a bag from my tripod with a battery bank and hand warmer inside for those really cold nights.

I have the same two camera bodies, the D850 with the battery grip "I use the Vello grip and Wasabi batteries for two plus years with no issues" kills the Z9 battery, but that's to be expected since the DSLR has an OVF and does not have an EVF to power. I have two Nikon brand Z9 batteries, and two Power2000 Z9 batteries, which work fantastic "no difference from the Nikon batteries", the Power2000 cost US $69 at B&H. They recently came out, so had no option initially but to buy a second Nikon brand battery, which cost an arm and a a leg for a battery. Nice video by the way, and great pictures.

Great comment, thank you for sharing. I just looked up the Power2000 battery on B&H. Reviews are great and for $69 bucks it is a great backup battery to have IMO. I am going to get it! Thanks for that. I do wish that the Nikon Z9 had a higher resolution EVF. 3.7 MP vs Sony's A1 at 9.4 MP. I guess you can't have everything but it is a sore spot for me. D850 OVF is a breath of fresh air when I'm not relying on FPS, video or body stabilization. Thanks again for the battery tip at B&H! I appreciate your time to write.

Snowy Owl last year on the Island. In the interior snowy owls are beautiful to photograph. Wood ducks are beautiful here on the island in winter. Only whisky Jacks up in the alpine it seems. Be fun to try and photograph mice, moles, or a rabbit but most come out during the night to scurry around. Glad you like the video! Thanks for watching

Great video and amazing images! Thank you for sharing. I always find that the rating on the sleeping bag is way off and I freeze regardless of how warm it says it is. -12C sleeping bag is more like a -2C. Best to be prepared with a lot of warm layers.
@MattShannonPhoto
@MattShannonPhoto Год назад
I agree, we have a few subzero rated sleeping bags and even if the temp is warmer than the rating on the sleeping bag I'm still cold. Sleeping bag gets worse the older it is.

Thank you! Yeah....27 min video was a little long and I had so much more to share. It's hard to give a definitive answer to say DSLR or Mirrorless, or Carbon Fibre over Aluminium. The Aluminium tripod I showed in the video has some amazing features light the centre pole can extend out from the top of the tripod and tilt down horizontally. This can be very useful for macro, product photography, getting low or position the camera in a tricky angle. I'll have to share more in the next video. Thanks again for watching and your comment! Cheers

Snowshoeing is so fun! A lot of work in deep, fresh snow. Recommend ski poles too for stability?
@MattShannonPhoto
@MattShannonPhoto Год назад
Yes, ski poles I think would be very helpful. There are a few times where the snow was so deep, or I lost my footing on the snowshoes that the poles would have come in handy for stability. They would also help with weight while hiking. Thanks for watching! See you next time.
@surfintom

@MattShannonPhoto
@MattShannonPhoto Год назад
Hmmm I better get on that one. But I have to make it more exciting then most. “What’s in my bag…..here is a baby eagle I saved, and the keys to my helicopter….what else is in my bag…oh a brick of gold in case the banks crash and my digital money is gone.” Something like that would be good. What do you think?

@@MattShannonPhoto funny just want to get an idea of what you are using I will never have z9 I shoot with d500 and a d3
@MattShannonPhoto
@MattShannonPhoto Год назад
D500 and d3 are excellent cameras. I'd probably just invest in sharp glass than upgrade the camera body. Z9 is expensive and heavy. I've used the d500 a few times. solid camera!

Lol - that's almost the same setup I have. Z9, carbon-fiber tripod, and an external USBC battery pack (26k mAH).
@MattShannonPhoto
@MattShannonPhoto Год назад
Awesome! How do you like that setup? Works well for you? Another Z9 user comment on here saying they use a battery from B&H that cost about $60-70 USD. I might buy one for my Z9 as a backup if I’m out on the water or in a tight spot where an external battery pack and cable might not be ideal for.
@joeyslaptop
@joeyslaptop Год назад
@@MattShannonPhoto It works great. The thing I like about the battery pack is that it charges the battery about three times - or keeps the camera going for three times as long while plugged in. Sometimes, I'll plug it into the camera. When the camera is off, it's charging the battery. If it's on, it's powering the camera.
@MattShannonPhoto
@MattShannonPhoto Год назад
@@joeyslaptop do you know if that size of battery is allowed on a plane? I while back I did some research on a battery bank to take on a multi day trip and they mentioned that here in Canada there was a limit to the size of battery allowed on a plane. At the time it was 27k. I own a 22k mah and it is fine Great to hear someone using one and they love their setup. Thanks for sharing!
@joeyslaptop
@joeyslaptop Год назад
It does add some weight to a pack though.
@adventure_photo
@adventure_photo Год назад
I don’t know how you can deal with wearing glasses when outdoors doing activities. Why don’t you get contact lenses for outdoor adventures? Way better than dealing with glasses.
@MattShannonPhoto
@MattShannonPhoto Год назад
I hear ya, pros and cons with contacts for me in subzero weather. At night I would have to take the contacts out and place them in their cleaning solution which would freeze. I do use contacts for sports like snowboarding for the day or surfing, but for this trip I didn’t consider it. Contacts sometimes irritates my eyes which sucks but on the flip side, glasses get fogged up, wet from rain, scratched…etc. Perhaps laser eye surgery in the future is the best option 🤷‍♂️.

What's the largest lens you'll carry on that chest harness? When I hike, i have a 100-400 attached and am using a slide but am looking for alternatives.
@MattShannonPhoto
@MattShannonPhoto Год назад
Honestly, no joke, I have carried my 500mm f/4 G mount lens with camera body on the chest harness from Cotton Carrier. While I was photographing Grizzlies, I placed my 500mm f/4 in the harness and used my sony with a 400mm on top of my 500mm setup mounted to my chest to keep my sony with the 400mm stable while filming. It can handle a lot of weight! Typically I carry my 400mm and Sony on the chest on a daily basis if my Z9 and telephoto are on a tripod.

Here is the link for the harness if you want to check out more of the specs: www.cottoncarrier.com/?ref=GAKh2v-g7CC9w 10% off discount if you use my discount code at checkout. The discount code is: MATTSHANNON Let me know if that helps or if you have any other questions.

Oh I forgot to mention that I've used my chest harness for my bigger lens and camera body, but I've also attached a side holster for a second camera and lens setup. There are examples on their website I shared. For more gear discounts you go to my GEAR page on my website: www.mattshannon.ca/gear.html Have a great day and thank you for your questions
