Agree, this lens is spectacular - especially when mounted to the Z9. I've done quite a bit of testing with the Z-mount 2.0 teleconverter and this lens and it produces very respectable results, giving a 140-400mm range at f/5.6. I have no doubt that the native 100-400 lens will produce better quality, but for occasional needs, this offers significant cost savings and convenience.

Been using this lens for a little while now on the Z9. It's absolutely stellar; the best 70-200 I have ever used or tested. It creates a vibrance in the images that has to be experienced to be believed. Better than many primes...and way ahead of the competition.
Did you also try the latest from Canon RF and Sony 70-200 version 2? I find it hard to believe that this one is so mutch better, but my old 80-200 was awesome as well. But that was 2 decades ago. I would expect the offerings from Sony and Canon to be equally good

And Sony engineers are limited in how far they can push the envelope with that small E-Mount (which was originally designed for APS-C).
@@RobertFalconer1967 this isn't actually a factual based conclusion. I love Nikon in a way, but can you prove the lens is truly better? It should be, the Sony is almost Parfocal has very low focus breathing and is 300 grams lighter.
@@lekkerpruven887 Sony Gm2 is great, however, Canon RF 70-200 is not very good, it is very small and light, but image quality is not on par with Sony and Nikon(It dosent even reach 200mm, around 180mm at close distance)
Another excellent review like always. The only thing that I wish this lens comes in the box is a dedicated arca swiss shoe to fit nicely on your tripod. Well ..we can't have everything right? It's F version, which is the 70-200 FL ED VR is equally good but this Z version is faster and that extra coating on this lens gives it an edge, especially for evening and in yellow light conditions. In ambient lighting, this lens, together with the Leica 90-280 are by far the best two the world in my book. And yes....mounted on the Z9 does makes a different compared to my Z6ii
Also, re metering: If you're photographing people, you can tie the spot metering system to the autofocus points, which will work much better than relying on either matrix or center-weighted metering.
Good choice - cross fingers for you that Nikon can deliver and ship the camera, supply is still thin due to disruptions of the supply chains. Best wishes.
The zoom ring resistance sounds very similar to the action of hybrid dampened fluid heads like the Gitzo GHFG1. It's designed to allow very quick panning when needed, but dampens "slow" motion.

Thank you for your Nikon Z9 video! We purchased a Canon R5 that we are really pleased with except when it freezes up during shooting. We have the latest firmware and are memory cards are compatible. We are considering exchanging the R5 for the Nikon Z9. How is the Z9's low-light performance and its AF capability / accuracy? Is there anything we would be sacrificing my migrating to the Nikon Z9? @@mathphotographer my local shop just contacted me today, my second Z9 and for me the 70-200 Z lens is ready for collection at my local shop in Germany. Still feel a little sad that my D5 and D6 had to go but so far extremely happy with the results I have so far obtained with my Z9 (which arrived 23rd December 2021) wrks amazingly well with my 50mm 1.2 Z lens. Love your channel, keep up the great work.
Is it clearly best in class? My understanding is this Nikon Z and the new Sony 70-200 GM OSS II are neck and neck with one review putting the Sony slightly ahead for better contrast shooting portraits into direct light (sharpness was almost dead heat). Both were better than the Canon offering which is a good lens but great like the first 2.

Hi Math, I see that you have in the back of the room the Leica 90-280 F2.8-4 mounted on the SL2. You highly recommend the Nikon Z-70-200 F2.8 in this video : it would be interesting to have your feed back on that Leica lens as very few people tested it seriously since it came out in 2016. It is more than 2 times the price of the Nikon : could be amazing to have your personal thoughts about it, and a comparison in few sentences with the rest of the market. Thanks so much!

@@rumporridge1 More specifically, it pass to F4 (minimal aperture) at 273mm, means it is between F 2.8 and F4 all the way between 90 and 273mm...quite unique yes!
absolutely dead right- be sure the portrait bottom is on Lock, UNLESS you desire the PORTRAIT mode- This will eliminate a lot of strange things occurring while shooting landscape Thanks for the tip

I use Lightroom and Photoshop, both have panorama as well as HDR functionality. I think the new S lens version is superior but that's my subjective opinion :)
I just worked on a video about the R3 but with focus on high resolution landscape images since I love the R3 value proposition but was skeptical on its 24MP sensor so I got the camera for a week and tested it for landscape. What I can already say: with the right shooting technique and some willingness to stitch frames in post you get fantastic results :)
If you like this Nikkor then you should try the Sony 70-200mm 2.8 GM II on a Sony A1. Dude, this will make change your mind. The Sony 70-200mm 2.8 GM II is the best 70-200mm I ever used.
The70-200 2.8 VRII was a Good Lens, but it's successor was a not as good. I suspect that this lens has a lot of the design of the poorer lens. Maybe Nikon fixed the problems the 70-200 2.8 FL lens had with the lack of sharpness
Eh? Not sure what you've been reading? ..Go check out the in-depth reviews on Photography Life of these lenses. The 70-200 FL was considerably better than the VR II, whereas the new S line Z lens blows everything away. It's on another level. Its best performance is wide open at all focal lengths, which is absolutely insane. 100% not just one of the best lenses Nikon has ever produced, but also probably the best 70-200 made by ANY manufacturer! The Z glass is arguably the best quality lenses around, Nikon is an optics manufacturer, and it shows.
@@julianmorgan5994 I owned both the VRII and the FL Lenses. The VRII was sharp on my D800 and D810, not so sharp on the POS D850. I got the 70-200 FL when I sent the VRII in for a VR Motor replacement. It was less sharp on the D850 than the VRII, then again, no Lens was ever sharp on that D850. It does do a lot better on the Z9. I just got a 24-120 f4 S, and it is very sharp, even wide open. The 70-200 FL needs to be stopped down a stop or 2 from wide open. I haven't tried the 70-200 S yet, but I made the earlier statement based on the lenses looked quite Similar in shape/proportion. I hope it is a winner along with other Lenses, returns Nikon back to the Gold Podium, where it was from the early 1960 thru the late 80s
While the Z9 is certainly much much better with it's AF than the 1st and 2 gen Z bodies, myself and several other multi system users have tried it out and all of us feel the AF is still a little behind the Sony and Canon bodies. The reason the body seems to be making such a huge impact on the Nikon user base is a huge amount of inertia and ignorance of competing systems" performance capabilities, nearly every post from these users are prefaced with the typical "I've been a Nikon user for 30 years" or equally meaningless things like "the Nikon just feels better in my hand" or " I don't like Sony's menu" or " Nikon has the best colors" ...as if these people don't know how to use post production software like Lightroom.... it's clear and apparent that the accumulated denial of the AF shortcomings in the Z bodies with this loyalty has prevented the company from realizing that the AF on the previous Z bodies stink and is still behind the Sony and Canon mid range bodies which are a generation older and without benefit of stacked sensor technology. Sometimes reality is more important than politeness, it's about time users become blunt about obvious deficiencies....
The Z9 has AF tracking in 8k video. The Sony A1 does not. All cameras have strengths and weaknesses. To say the AF stinks on the Z9 is a fanboy statement.
@@kontrolla1 also who made photography completely about AF only? Since when did professional Craftsmen need the camera to do for them what they did for themselves for years. Also these Fanboys (trolls) are irrationally disciples of some RU-vidrs without producing their own thoughts. I have tried “the other” systems as well and they were found wanting on many levels!!
This is funny considering DPReview just released a review of the 3 flagship cameras from Sony Canon and Nikon and had the Nikon edging the Sony with the Canon third. So much for AF that stinks huh?
The Z9 autofocus is at least as good if not better than the R3 and A1. There are other huge usability win with the Z9 as well such as the displays, the back screen, the buttons, grip and speed. Significantly shorter startup time and less shutter lag than the A1. I tried both and the Z9 just feels like a faster camera overall. If anything I find it very odd how many online reviews look away from Sony deficiencies such as poor grip, poor material feel (the rubber feels like cheap plastic) flimsy card doors, no tip display, bad back displays, poor colours out of camera (yes this is important when quick turn around is important). Also many of the different modes the Sony cameras operate in come with various asterisks to the performance. I understand you feel different, but don't come here and throw around terms like "reality". The "reality" is that Nikon and Canon have been making professional photo cameras for decades. Sony has not and it shows.
