Nikon Zf Review with a 15 year old lens - WOW!!

I really enjoyed this lens with the Zf. One thing I didnt mention is the VR with video. Today's lenses are better with VR when handholding doing video. but for being at 200mm hand held,, and remember I am shooting DX so Im at 300mm hand held. It really helps with the shake and the VR doesnt do weird things with the image. The image doesn't stick when panning.

Sorry if I missed a video, but do you shoot with (vintage) manual focus lenses at all? Hudson Henry was recently raving about the f and the new 6 III’s eye detection when using manual lenses. Have you used that feature? Optical zoom in and focus 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻

this lens has a glow I really like. The AF handled the new tech perfectly. AF-S G lens 15 year old tech super compatible with a camera in 2023 . I honestly thought there would be some herky jerky AF but nope. It performed great.

Dom, don't sell. Like me I kept the DSLRS if anything I bought more after adding mirrorless. Heard the D780 does good video AF? Have you tried?

how much lighter is the FL vs G? also is the VR better? I think this VRII was launched during the D3S release. the older G version is good too. thanks for the run down on all the 70-200 options we have. great info here.

@@Vahagraphy I think the FL version is heavier because it has more metal. The G version: 2003 - 2009, VRII: Dec 2009-2015 and the FL FX 2016- The Weight: 1,430g. The f/2.8 Z 70-200 S weight is 1359g...The S lens does focus faster and has very low focus breathing, Nikon says they put some more coatings on the lenses but. I haven't noticed the difference from the FL that they are still selling. I do believe the FL and the S lenses are better than the latter two. The G lens has more buttons but it isn't quite as sharp as the VRII. The FL is very close to the S lens. The version II was release a little after the D3. That's why I have the G. I recently bought the Z version. And glad I did. The only thing I like better on the older version is the rubber isn't a magnet for dust and the zoom ring is closer. The G, that I like is it has more buttons than than the verII. The S version I just got so I'm not sure all of the differences are. But it would make sense that they would change some of the optics because it is closer to the sensor. I believe the other difference is the stabilization is better. And the new focusing motor system in the lens is faster. It's definitely more quiet.

I can attest to that. The 35 G 1.4 AF-S lens is a gem. The 35 Z option doesnt compare to character. btw if you havent used these older AF-S lenses for a while. and you already know this im sure. mount them , let the focus motors move a bit. That;s where you get the AF noise squeak.

thanks man. I currently do not own a 300 2.8. I had the 300 2.8 VR1 some time back and that lens was one of the sharpest lenses Ive ever used. I have my eye on a 300 PF F4 . I find that lens interesting for the size and weight.

Glad you found that deal. Like you, . some of my most favorite portrait shots I've shot is with this VRII. The lens handles backlight on subjects very stunningly. It adds this glow from the sun. I was shocked how well the FTZ and ZF worked so well with the VRII. The bokeh at 2.8 is magical. I own the 70-200mm Z and honesty, your not missing much other than the fact no adapter needed. and better VR.

I had that one very briefly until this one came out back in 2009. The VR1 has this cool focus ring I like. I like the design.

I have also the VR1 and it is pretty good. I saw no problems in that lens

I've been attached to mine ever since I bought it. Even long time canon and sony shooter Amar from Camera Sutra bought a Zf for a side camera and he doesn't even shoot Nikon.

but but but.... its 24MP lol according to some experts its not enough.

@@Vahagraphy .Haha! And you can´t do birds without 100 fps or a f4 600mm million dollar lens.

hehe. yah i saw that the box switched. but I have it on ALL AREA AF so its just picking up what it thinks. and also have it on Auto Object detect. I'll switch to human next time. thanks bud. F mounts will slowly start getting more expensive you watch. They don't make em anymore.

You can't go wrong with native glass. 3rd party is good sometimes but not all the time.

for some the G AF-s lenses are ancient. Not me. I wanted to test the AF on the Zf with these AF-s lenses This lens did an amazing job.

that FL must be amazing. Did they correct the 200mm issue they had with the VRII where supposidly they were saying the VRII isnt a true 200mm on the long end?

it really does. I was surprised how well this lens performed. 100 percent shots on focus. If one's getting subpar results its user error.

I want those older FD Canon L 1.2 lenses on a ZF. I had them all and sold them years back.Kinda wished I never did. They were in amazing condition and the 24. 1.4 L FD sells for 10X the price now.

Never sell good old glass... it will all be discovered sometime...

this VRII got some negative press because it wasnt considered a true 200MM on the long end. it came up just a bit short. however i love this lens.
