Nilfluthen, Walzer, Op. 275 - Josef Strauss 

"Nile Waters". The Concordia Ball which took place during the 1870 carnival season had as its theme the opening in November 1869 of the Suez Canal by Ismail Pascha (with the attendance of Emperor Franz Josef and numerous dignitaries from around the world). Journalists had covered, commented upon and analysed this major political and economic event. Now the events surrounding the opening of the Suez Canal also provided the occasion for every detail of the Concordia Ball, which was held on 25 January 1870 in the Sofiensaal. The ball announcement and the ladies’ gifts reflected the theme, and so the dedication waltz by Josef Strauss was titled Nilfluthen - an odd name for a Viennese waltz, though explicable given the theme of the 1870 Concordia Ball. The first waltz among the novelties, it managed to evoke its title: one seemed to hear the movement of the Nile waters in its elegant, gliding motif. The work remained permanently in the Strauss orchestra’s repertoire.

El Baile Concordia que tuvo lugar durante la temporada de carnaval de 1870 tuvo como tema la apertura en noviembre de 1869 del Canal de Suez por Ismail Pascha (con la asistencia del emperador Francisco José y numerosos dignatarios de todo el mundo). Los periodistas cubrieron, comentaron y analizaron este importante acontecimiento político y económico. Ahora bien, los acontecimientos que rodearon la apertura del Canal de Suez también dieron ocasión a cada detalle del Baile Concordia, que se celebró el 25 de enero de 1870 en la Sofiensaal. El anuncio del baile y los obsequios de las damas reflejaban el tema, por lo que el vals inaugural de Josef Strauss se tituló Nilfluthen, un nombre extraño para un vals vienés, aunque explicable dado el tema del Baile de 1870. El primer vals entre las novedades, como su título lograba evocar: parecía escucharse el movimiento de las aguas del Nilo en su elegante y deslizante motivo. La obra permaneció permanentemente en el repertorio de la orquesta de Strauss.
