I guess we're hitting heads here, I'm a graduate from the austrian Jazz acadamy. And I think it would be an honor to have this man by my side to play for just one minute.
Its amazing how well he can play a memorized piece of music with so many differnt parts and it is not a simple piece. But it is also funny when he adds a little bit of fun to it at the end!
please go study the trombone before saying this is shit. He does some amazing things with the trombone in this that many people cannot do, even other professional trombone players. This is not meant to sound like some amazing piece of music. He is showing the things he can do and entertaining the audience. From what my instructor told me, this is an intermission in a performance that was being put on and he just decided to have fun and entertain the audience.
You hum while playing, humming the right tones gets you chords and overtones as well (and that raspy dirty sound). It takes lots of practice. This is a really good player and very entertaining.
This guy has mastered his instrument. I don't think I've heard a 'bone player with a wider range. His low notes growl and his high notes soar! Terrific! He's also really funny. I was cracking up when he started disassembling his trombone!
Saw and heard this improvisation several times played live by Nils. It starts with an old swedish folksong, continues with a blues pattern is from "Smoke on the Water" and ends with that swedish song again.
There is a GREAT album with Joe Sample (Crusaders) and Nils that I just got, and the cat can fly on the horn. This video is a "big" sound, but the guy is really amazing, with a light crisp clean floating combination of technique and sheer musicality that is amazing.
Yes. Play a low (not pedal) B flat and then sing the same note, then keep playing the B flat and sing up the scale to the fifth or F. The "third" note comes in when you go from the F to the next G . . . when you sing the G while playing the B flat, the natural harmonics of the horn will sound a third, higher note (I can't remember which one it is) but it is really fun to play the B flat and sing between the F and G and hear the harmony move between a simple interval and a bona fide chord.
Hey, you know what?!? Us trumpet players do the same thing! Play (finger) the root, humm the 5th, and the 3rd sometimes shows up. Sounds like the multiphonix is much easier & more useful on a trombone than on a trumpet. Thanks!
@strezzedoutz I believe that he is doing what is called double buzzing. Double buzzing is not the same as double tonging obviously. It is usually achieved at lower levels easier and is necessary for some of the lowest notes
Incredible! I've never heard that combination of methods used. What's the low chordal sound called? I like his "no trombone, NO PROBLEM!" approach there. Fantastic player, fun entertainment.
I'd like to see the video of you guys playing double high C's... especially in high school (even Watrous doesn't do more than rip up to that 2x C). My opinion on Nils? He's a solid trombone player plus he's inventive and fun to watch and listen to... a very nice combination.
The red paint doesn't come from the material; it's painted on. Yamaha asked if they could sponsor him with a trombone, and his requirements were that it would be red, and that he would be allowed to make a few adjustments to it. Later Yamaha asked if they could use his trombone as a new model for "normal people" to buy.
that's training.. the lower range what he is playing there what sounds massive.. is called double buzz.. like speaking trough your nose and mouth at the same time.. he is blowing..and nurring.. that makes the terrific sound
That is not rose brass. Rose Brass is a type of brass with a high copper content so it shines with more of a light red-orangeish hue. kinda like the color of a clean penny. This trombone is just a red color, probably a special lacquer or something. definately not paint
I think he's using polyphonics. Where you hum and play at the same time. Like making harmony with yourself. But he's also doing something I have no idea about. maybe growling or something
