She had active interests and established responsibilities in her community that were independent of her love interests. Plus she had a network of friends and people around her to interact with who all had their own well-developed personalities and story arcs. And that's just the first season! Bella had background parents, sideline friends, and barely present vampire family. Everything else was her one-dimensional love interest, a temporary filler boyfriend, and a unicorn child that was also devoid of personality. Slight difference, wouldn't you say?

Greta Tarantino Caroline has already appeared on the spin-off. Other dead characters have made appearances as well since they invented an entire universe of new supernatural creatures and abilities. Theoretically, it can be done, but probably not well. Nina obviously wants nothing to do with it, "Damon" is just hostile to Nina, and "Stefan" seemed to be over before the series ended as well.
