Back in 1978 I was a front desk clerk at what was then Portman Intercontinental London. ( now a Nobu hotel ) . I checked her in. Didnt really know who she was but a few older folk in our team seemed to know. Guess she took a shine to me, as whenever she wanted something, she would be calling for me... " Martyn, Ms Simone, Suite XYZ on the phone for you "... ah those far away days. What a voice , and what style she had. Should have seen her walk.....she was oh soooo coool.
Anyone that knows music holds her in high regard. And the others are listening to Katie Perry, so who cares about their opinion anyway, haha. The great Ms. Simone
The true genius that matters is Nin's gift to God . spilling out to others. She holds a genuine soul by life to a rare in a profound to express her experiences with it. This is real life to make music!
This speaks to the soul. I don’t care who, where, or what you are. If you don’t feel this. I am so sorry. This is more valuable than gold, money, or words. Invaluable. POWER.
There were so many cover versions of this spiritual that it would take too long to list them all but I loved them all including Pete Seeger, Peter, Paul and Mary, Kingston Trio, The Weavers and The Seekers. And no, this is not the original recording. But still wonderful.
My mother played Nina Simone all the time when I was growing up, she is still a musical genius, a giant among small time musicians of the last century!! No one compares to her!!!
Originally an African American traditional spiritual track, where the earliest recording was by the Les Baxter Orchestra in 1956, with lead vocals from folk singer Will Holt. Jazz and soul pioneer Nina Simone recorded her own version (which is over 10 minutes long and is Simone’s longest track) on her 1965 album “Pastel Blues”. 0:10 [Story of Song]
if you ask the average music fan if they know who Nina Simone is - i would bet majority have never heard of OR could not name one song.. that is what i mean???

You must see this song in the film " The Thomas Crown Affair (1999) " The famous scene of the paint robbing in the museum followed by this genius song!!!!
Yes she is. Maybe she isn't as well known as she deserves though. I think that is what people mean by "underrated". I think anyone who knows her regard her as one of the best musicians of all time.
The NETFLIX release "What Happened Miss SImone? exposes many more people to her genius. She couldn't have lived any other life - the demons date back to her parents being told to sit in the back during her recital when she was a young girl. That was her first exposure to discrimination and she saw it everywhere. When the movement gave her voice a meaning and direction she found herself on a journey from which she could never return. Her passion - the reason we loved her was also her un-doing; She told Martin Luther King Jr. she ain't no non-violent person - she was a fighter and fought with her piano keys and voice and then couldn't stop until she left the States.
+Karen Kee Hey Karen... I was wondering if you can help me out. I've listen this countless times but don't know exactly what she means in the song. I read in another video of this song and someone wrote"If the devil had a theme song this would be it... Is it like trading your soul. Any help would be great. Thanks
She was rebuking the demons who made her feel less than. She was a broken lady because of the color of her skin!!! Everyone wanted he music in a controlled environment but as soon as she walked on the street she was a target for hatred. Get it together...
“Sinnerman” is a traditional African American spiritual inspired by the book of Exodus. It tells the tale of man running from God (“the Lamb”) and begging for forgiveness on Judgment Day, but ultimately, man cannot escape his wrath. 2:00 [uDiscoverMusic]
I wish Nina Simone were still with us here in the flesh. Hearing her music is wonderful, and seeing videos of Nina is amazing, but I would have loved seeing her perform live. I'm so thankful we still have Nina Simones recordings.

Minden alkalommal lenyűgöz. Zseniális nő. A dalaiban örökké itt van velünk.
I did See her live After waiting 20 years or so. I was not disappointed. She had the Most fantastic drummer with her who created atmospheres for Each Song i never expected. And she was dressed like a Queen. Beautiful!
For those who keep saying she is underated, She is considered one of the most influential artists of all time. She may not be known to many younger people, only because she goes so far back. I have a couple of CDs of her, I hadn't played in years. Lucifer used Sinnerman in an episode, made me go back and listen again. It stays in my car now. Those old enough know. Those not, their loss.
An artist can be influential without being widely acclaimed. The roots of American gospel music are largely lost to obscurity, yet those artists remain influential.
each line begins on the off beat of the piano. like the piano and vocals are in 2 different meters. so difficult not to screw up one or the other, since your brain wants to harmonize the beats. but the off beat contributes to the frantic feel of the song.
@Meg megie Still ... a really long bow to draw. Would prefer to see this clearly talented artist, and therefore, it must be guilt? I feel the exact same way, and I'm an Aussie.
@Meg megie Not sweeping anything. It may surprise you to know that I didn't kill any aborigines to get the property on which I live. Surprise, surprise. I'm not responsible for actions taken which were outside of my control. It may further be of interest to note that I myself am of aboriginal ancestry. You know what they say about assumptions ... you ass.
Its like Music from a different Planet, in the Future, on Drugs. AMAZING. So Time ahead, thats insane!!!! This Lady was the true definition of Genius! R.I.P Nina
I remember I was age 10 in 1977 and I saw the KKK march down the main street near my home in Aberdeen, MD. We were always aware that a KKK chapter was less than 10 miles away in Rising Sun, MD. NEVER will forget.
Holly smokes - is it still that way? I'm from Europe, so i literally can't imagine seeing those weird as mo-fos in their creepy outfits marching down some street. Imagining it gives me cold sweats. D:
What I find joyous and uplifting about her music is that she still unites people to this day….just simply seeing all the responses in many different languages shows us the power behind her voice in bringing people together.
When I first saw episode 1 (2 AM) In the end, when this song started, it was like something inside me lit up, I listened ,more than hundred times ... I remember it was 8 o'clock in the morning when I stopped it Thank you "LOVECRAFT COUNTRY "
Most People only like one type of music... They wil Never know how Nina simone are cause of there narrow taste they have.. The unique Nina Simone's Gospel-like spiritual... Cry out Rock! "A wondrous melody is wings for the spirit, and maketh the soul to tremble for joy." ~ Baha'i Faith
love this song.... first heard from Thomas Crown movie.... now in regular rotation.... upbeat tempo mixed with anguished pleas creates a sense of urgency in the song that is compelling. and doesnt fade with repeat listens. this is a great song. Nina perfect fit for it.
