Nine Days a Queen is a much forgotten, and little seen early British film depicting the tragic life of Lady Jane Grey. Also known as 'Tudor Rose', the film follows the events after King Henry VIII's death -- the change of succession prior to the death of Edward VI, the brief 'reign' of Jane Grey, and her eventual fall and end. Nova Pilbeam playes Jane, with a typically 30's cheery smile, and a young John Mills plays Guilford Dudley. The film 'Lady Jane' in the 80's borrowed a lot of the romantic inaccuracies began in this movie, between Jane and Guilford. Following in the shadows of the much better know 'Private Life of Henry VIII'; the film boasts far superior settings (for its time!). It is, however, widely inaccurate. A lot of the actors would have first appeared in silent films, and the oversized gestures are still apparent... take a look at Queen Mary with Jane in the Tower! (Part 3).
Part one begins at the death of Henry VIII. He names Edward his successor, followed by Mary, Elizabeth & Jane. The story then continues through the Executions of the Seymour brothers, and to the proposed marriage of Jane and Guilford.
