When The Fragile first came out, I didn't initially care for it much. I was an angry teenager and I had been hoping for an album as hard and angry as The downward Spiral I remember watching the MTV awards played at the beginning of this, live on TV, and being pretty underwhelmed. I bought the CDs - as one did in those days - and they got the occasional listen. Then one day in September 2000, I was on a ferry, headed home after a 3 day party. I was just starting to come down from an acid trip; I decided to pop the left CD into my trusty Discman for the ride. I was sitting on the ship's upper deck, the sun was setting, several seagulls were flying alongside the boat, and all I could smell was the sea, and I was like "holy shit. HOLY SHIT! This is really good, I get it now." The Fragile is a mood.

NIN, unlike any other band I love, invokes some of my fondest and darkest memories simultaneously. I don't even think I was sophisticated enough to properly appreciate it when it came to me. Now that this music has been with me for three decades, and after becoming a musician; I've really grown to appreciate both the subtle intricacies, and sheer bombast that make this one of history's best musical discographies. Fan since 1990, 41 years old, still return to it over and over. Sometimes it lies dormant for years, but it always returns. Couldn't be more grateful.

Thank you so much for this. The Fragile is an absolute masterpiece; it has a very special place in my heart. Autumn of 1999 was a very dark time for me. At only 15 I lost the boy I loved. His death, the gut-wrenching despair…this album helped me get through it. The visceral pain in Trent’s voice and his music comforted me…almost like it was written just for me. I was the frail, so very fragile. It brought some joy in a completely bleak life and stopped me from ending it. I wish I was able to see NIN in concert live, but I couldn’t even leave my bed to go to school. Even my friends abandoned me but it wasn’t their fault; nobody could help me. Only the music helped. I’m forever grateful to Mr. Reznor, thank you for NIN, thank you for sharing your pain and opening your heart to heal others. The way out (of the great below) is through. NIN helped me get through.💔🖤❤️‍🩹❤

Nin has always put a soundtrack to my darker thoughts. As a teenager the rage in those first tracks on PHM was like a conductor, grounding out my own fury with the way this world works. I owe a lot to this music, because there’s no telling where that energy would have gone otherwise. I have always made my own music, but to say it hasn’t been shaped by this work would be disingenuous.
@emilyreames7748
@emilyreames7748 Год назад
Music has always been an outlet for my darker moods, almost as if the music's darkness dilutes my own. All of NIN rides a fine line of that, some songs working to dilute and others just amplifying my emotion. Some PHM songs in particular are very similar to each other but have opposite effects - and the more I learn about music the more fascinated I get. The subtleties are amazing I guess I'm just glad someone else has voiced that emotion channeling/diluting feeling. It's a hard feeling to describe to someone who hasn't felt it. Good luck with your life, and may music continue to provide outlet

One of my favorite albums ever. The Cure and NIN is the only other band/artist who's entire catalogue that speaks to me on the deepest possible level - emotionally and psychologically. I was so happy to see and hear Trent Reznor speak so eloquently and personally about The Cure at the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame. He said of the Cure's music (paraphrasing) "it sounded like music written for me and about me". Trent's music feels like it was written for me and about me. He really is one of the musical geniuses of his generation. Every live performance is an emotional and energetic expression and experience. Every song and album is a delicate artwork.

Nine inch nails and particularly this album at the point where my life was at the time I escaped inside of myself and almost never came out and almost never came out. So many times I was close to destroying myself. This band and it's music opened my eyes to how the world really is, I used this music to fuel all my addictions but then as I pulled myself out of the spiral let's say no pun intended, I was able to take control of the demons and clean up myself and become a stronger person. They were a big influence to say the least.

This was very well presented. Trent's been sober for well over 20yrs now, though, which is much longer than the previous era of NIN. I was 18 when this album came out. (Born 1981) Got into NIN around 96. Their music didn't click for me right away. I didn't hate it, but I was more confused by it. My friend lent me his copy of Downward Spiral around '96 and I kept trying but it just wouldn't click. What I remember most was thinking (at the time) that the song structures weren't right. Long story short, one day I put on the Downward Spiral again. When it got to "Reptile" the music FINALLY clicked for me. When The Fragile came out, I was the only one out of the couple friends I had, that not only liked, but LOVED the album. I'm torn on which album I like more. The Downward Spiral or The Fragile. The truth is I love both equally but for different reasons. Lately been revisiting my high-school era bands I used to love. NIN, Manson, KMFDM, Theatre of Tragedy etc. Can't get back into Rammstein. Thankfully, I still have most of the cds I had when I was a teen in the mid/late 90s. (Class of 2000). As a side note, and for what it's worth, 21st century KMFDM isn't that good. They have some good songs/albums here and there but their peak was definitely in the 90's. Their name doesn't carry the same weight as it once did. The new album is....disappointing.

It;s interesting that he became so dismissive of The Perfect Drug, because that's long been my favourite NIN track. It just has SO MUCH energy, that drum solo is INSANE, and the ending is HAUNTING ...

17:40 a HUGE understatement. Listening to the album with your eyes closed is like watching a movie!

I have to crank 'we're in this together' EVERY time it comes on. The 🥁 and the 🎤... Same with 'the big come down' among others.

I saw Nine Inch Nails For the First Time at the age of 12 or 13 back in 94 or 95, having found my stepdads copies of pretty hate machine and broken. Of course I found the downward spiral amazing, and I think a lot of us fans figured we were going to lose Trent to heroin during that huge hiatus between touring for TDS and releasing the fragile, with that little ray of hope with the Lost Highway soundtrack somewhere in the middle. The popularity of TDS I think brought a lot of younger fans in and a lot of people in the fan base wanted the fragile to be TDS part 2. I was growing and maturing and my music tastes were less angst filled, I personally found the fragile to be the perfect album, for Trent, for the experience of seeing nin live and for where I was at the time, and it was a beautiful two packed discs of new music. This is a musical masterpiece of the highest order, with those perfect Trent Reznor signatures of chaotic dissonance melded with melodic perfection, and I love most all of his lyrics in a way but I believe this was his lyrical magnum opus

The first album I ever bought with my own money was The Fragile. I was a year underage. Had to be 17 to buy it. I talked music store cashier dude into selling it to me. I listened to it for fucking months, just rotating Left and Right

My favorite album ever. Unofficial as this may be, it was cut really well, and it was cool to get some of his perspective from that time woven with the live material.

There are three PERFECT albums that exist, Lateralus by TOOL, The Edges of Twilight by The Tea Party, and The Fragile by Nine Inch Nails. What an album, even by today's standards this album crushes most of what is out there.

Saw them 4 times Cleveland 94/95 all at different venues. Only missed one tour since. Even flew to Vegas to see the With Teeth Tour at the hard Rock. Marilyn Manson and Prick opened one of those early shows. Feel so lucky to have been the right age at the right time.

Trent Reznor: "I wonder what the fans and people who got me this far will think of it?" Me at 20 years old: "the fragile is the single greatest work ever created and should be enshrined on platinum disc so people millions of years in the future can hear it!!!" Yeah Trent, most of us thought it was pretty damn good lol.
