it's hard to tell through all the noise but i'm pretty sure there was stuff missing during the drum solo, notably the toms and generally it felt like it was being played different. still good
@@DirkHoeppner The first part of the solo is just him playing, well, literally solo, no backing percussion, kinda why the groove sounds a bit "off" or different. It sounded odd to me too. When he stops the solo and comes back in with the guitars (that eeeeHHHH upward pitch bend), the backing perc is there and the groove he plays is just like the one on the record, that's probably what you're listening for and not hearing at first.
@@Zazzaro703 True enough. Or the guy from Dillinger Escape Plan (name escapes me, but he does a drum cover of "Come To Daddy" by Aphex Twin, which is basically the groove from this song on steroids). Chris something...
@@wra7h He's opening and closing the hi hat with his left foot to keep time, as most drummers do, when doing the harmony vocals, so he's still "playing" them even if not hitting them at that point. Also it's quite tricky getting down those dynamics on the snare while also focusing on singing in tune.
@@bmac4there’s a backing track on the hats, lots of drummers use them to enhance their performance and there’s nothing wrong with it. His hats are played over the busier backing track.
@@wra7h yeah, it's easy to see that on the chorus. I was like: what, there are extra hi hat sounds here that he's not playing. Then I realized those are recorded. I don't really care, honestly. The guy is a monster anyway.
A couple of years ago i was in pretentious fanboy phase, i thought "NIN will never get a drummer as good as Josh Freese". I'm so glad i was wrong. This guy is a monster
Playing Drums, singing, and having perfect tempo with the samples ...freaking click track work its Fking insane, my absolute respect to this drum monster
I really hope this is a classic Reznor tease of what will be a multi angle, full length concert, finally with the audio quality we’ve all been dreaming of for years!
I have LOVED this song since it came out. Ten years later MTV is telling me that Reznor hates this song. Fifteen years later I learn that may not have been the full story. Awesome to see it performed live.
I honestly can’t think of anyone that would be a better drummer for NIN than Ilan. Taking drum parts that were, for the most part, written and recorded on a computer and making them accurate as hell while still adding such a human warmth and groove is an astounding accomplishment. His videos explaining how to play drums are equally amazing. Huge talent. I hope Trent keeps him!
I was so fortunate to have been at their Red Rocks performance in 2018 when they performed it live for the very first time during the encore. I lost my shit completely. Waited 21 years to finally see it performed and they didnt' disappoint.
I dream of seeing this song live so much. A few years ago I thought it wouldn't be ever possible. But with Ilan Rubin there's hope... I'm just waiting for the next concert in Poland.
he's singing while playing drums FUCKING HOW. Edit: This is such an absolutely beautiful performance, The drums are probably my favorite part from the song.
The first person to sound as big as bonham. He has the girth and thickness that Bonham had, but is cleaner and more technically accomplished in many ways. Truly an underrated giant of rock drumming.
Holy crap man. 😳 thanks for uploading this! You are the best drummer NIN has ever had. And as a drummer myself, Freese is one of my favorite drummers. Seriously impressed.
Freese is incredible I’ll add just for sake. His absence from A Perfect Circle and their subsequent downfall of quality (imo) is really evident and quite frankly really a huge letdown
This is so fucking sick! Ilan is the raddest dude in drumming; he took what Trent said about it being impossible to play live and absolutely shattered expectations! I'm so upset I couldn't have witnessed this live myself.
I honestly don't know how many times I've watched this now. Such precision, professionalism and heart showcasing what separates players like you. This is the perfect balance of respect for the track with the added bonus of the song building to showcase the drumming monster you are. Pro level 110. Truly - thanks for sharing this.
You are not fucking kidding!!! Goosebumps the whole time watching/;listening to that! Third time through and I feel I would never get tired of this. Yeah, just fucking awesome!
Having Ilan and his kit up front is so fitting. He deserves to be on display for the audience to enjoy. Not only is he an amazing drummer, but he performs with style and emotion that is beautiful to watch. Great choice in the stage layout to feature him.
After experiencing thirteen NIN shows and about four, maybe even five drummers in rotation, I swear... I swear. You, Sir Ilan, take the CAKE and THEN SOME. This is absolutely phenomenal, I'm freaking convinced. Fantastic performance! Seeing you perform this piece is like a realization manifested from a fever-dream, the ease of playing a song that was once claimed impossible with such jazz-inspired ferocity. BRAVO!!! 🤘🔥
Saw them Boston Calling night 2, they didn't play this one and I wanted to hear it so bad, the set was amazing and Ilan was fantastic. I saw NIN with Josh Freese on drums back in 09, that was also an incredible set. Ilan and Josh are both masters behind the kit.
lol the comments saying this is easy. Bro is clearly not struggling and he's also singing and doing this during the middle of a nine inch nails concert? Y'all are SILLY
Amazing. I would call this the greatest drum solo ever, but it is a song (which the drummer is also singing--because I guess the drums weren't hard enough). Really, I can't heap enough praise on this performance. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for sharing, not only the pristine sound mix, but also a steady, clear video of you drumming. It's just a masterclass in your skill, style, and I appreciate seeing this very much. One of my favorite songs, brought to life perfectly by this group of musicians.
Aaahhhhhhhh, saw the boys again on this '22 tour in Portland at Edgefield amphitheater........ Perfect! I could Not keep my eyes off of Ian's drumming! He is a Beast on the set
I was at Edgefield also. It was so good that when I got back to the motel I got online & got a ticket & hotel for Bend 2 days later. That show was even better! Way things are going it might've been my last rock & roll roadtrip. At least I went out on a high note.
Thank SO MUCH for posting this! This has ALWAYS been my favorite NIN song, it was the first NIN song that really clicked with me and it's been love ever since. Thank you so much!
