This video pre-dates Harry Potter. It’s about absinthe. With some nuances. Amazing song, great reaction.

Honestly the first time I saw the video I was thinking Bram Stoker's Dracula 1992. At that's what it reminded me of. As far as the look.

This was written as the theme song of David Lynch's film Lost Highway.

It wasn't the theme song, that was David Bowie's song "Deranged", but yeah, it's on the soundtrack and actually the whole soundtrack Trent Reznor was involved in an advisory role to Lynch.

I know it's probably not a straight relationship song, but I've always taken it semi-literal "anyway". My lady's the best thing I've found, I wouldn't trade her for any drug in the world

The visuals are a combination of edgar allan poe and Edward gorey gothic visuals. The perfect drug is referring to absinthe, an alcohol that is green and has a bit of a mystique for being a hallucinogen, you see it included in the visuals in the green hue, and also the drink he's pouring.

Not to take away from Reznor-- NIN has been one of my favorites forever, but he does actually get a lot of production and mixing help. Like a whole lot. For example Alan Moulder comes to mind right off the bat.

The general style is called gothic and Edwardian, which is the era of Edgar Allen Poe and dark spiritualism in America. This period of history of dark romantic intellectuals who dabble in dark arts is where Harry Potter and many other ghost and occult themes come from.

Never apologize for a Pikachu reference! Nine Inch Nails is my favorite "band", and I love your reaction to this song. I've not seen another channel use this song yet. I saw in another comment that you mentioned your heritage being from Louisiana, and it's interesting because Trent Reznor lived in Louisiana and had his recording studio there. Just a fun connection.

Frankly both this and Harry Potter use an English Victorian Gothic style of fashion with a lot of their imagery. It's a style that's certainly not unique to either property, and is in fact older than both properties.

Great reaction! NIN has been my favourite band for a couple of years now and would love to listen to these songs again for the first time. I'd recommend listening to studio versions without videos so you can truly immerse yourself in the music. For more songs I'd recommend something like Terrible Lie, The Day the World Went Away, The Great Below, Right Where It Belongs or if you dare to jump into the deep (and more industrial and metal) end I'd say to check Mr. Self Destruct, Ruiner, The Becoming, Eraser, Last, Wish or Somewhat Damaged. Keep it up and thx for the reaction!

This is still on of my favorite songs ever- stops time and takes me right back to 1998! Edit * I think this was before Harry Potter- maybe JK Rowling’s borrowed it? They have several songs about addiction, so I wouldn’t be surprised if it was an actual drug. The Lost Highway movie is where it came from- I still have the soundtrack ❤️

As others have said, this song came out before Harry Potter. Still a good reaction, but maybe at least check out the year of the songs you react to. You're right though.... In the NIN community, after Harry Potter came out, we make jokes about how he looks like Alan Rickman from the Potter franchise.

The adjective you're looking for is "Goth". As in "This might be the 2nd or 2rd most Goth music video of all time". See "Closer" and " March of the Pigs" for the other contenders.

The song is a non-linear story about a man’s descent into depression and despair after the death of a loved one (long speculated to be a child due to phrases like “take me with you”, which is a common reaction from parents who have lost a child, and visuals of being in a large empty house, but could just as easily be referring to a spouse, parent, or sibling). He then falls into alcoholism, using absinthe as his “perfect drug” to help him forget the pain and heartache of such a devastating loss due to its powerful effects, eventually becoming so dependent on drinking absinthe that he can’t function without it (“without you, everything falls apart,” “without you, it’s not as much fun to pick up the pieces”). It’s very impressive visually, but a very melancholy song with an incredibly tragic story.
