I somehow came into owning a 2001. Dude didn’t know it was a Canadian import so I got it with a clogged carb, scuffed fairings, and scraped handle bars for dirt cheap. Just got a new set of S20 evo tires installed.
Keep the the cc's but change swap the years. If his was fuel injected and had modern tech where yours had carby and old tech. He'd be the victor. 50cc won't make a noticeable difference. He's running on a carb and a 30 year worn engine, wheel bearings, chain. Torque is limited but the high rpm can redeem the little torque into power. The best thing about them is how unique they are. Shrinking a 4 banger into .25L is insane. The rev range is amazing and the sound is entertaining. Personally I'd be thrilled.
@@Netinterspace some noise is normal, but if its bad, these have some rubber bumpers in the clutch basket. Over time the go hard and fall apart/go loose. You have to remove the clutch, and drill out the rivets holding it together. You also have to source some appropriate rubber replacement and machine it to size. It's not the hardest job, but if you don't have access to a lathe, you will have to give it to someone to do. Maybe a pour in resin like for engine mounts would work. There's a good write up on the old ninja250 forum
