DUDE. I finally beat it. 30 years I've been trying to beat this game. And I did it tonight! Thanks for the inspiration. And for letting me know that the final bosses each remain dead after you kill them. You rule!

so many games from this era had NO ending worth mentioning. this game was like a movie 🎥. i just had to know what happened despite dying on 6-2 so many times. one of my favorite games ever! nice work!

Anyone who has beaten ninja gaiden back in the days should be supremely proud (I certainly am of myself) beside the last master(s). Getting to them was the real challenge. As usual, good job. Any player who picks this title up for the time will still feel the frustration, just like we did.

I've beaten Batman... Contra... All the NES Mega Man games... but I've never beated Ninja Gaiden. I don't think I ever will at this point as I simply lack the patience these days. This game is brutal. You are extremely good at these old games! Respect!

Also I had no friggin idea the spin slash was that insane against the bosses!! I barely used it in the game because I didn't like how it would eat up my ninpo.

I never beat this game, ever. Even AVGN never beat this one. The enemies that knock you off cliffs while jumping and other crazy things just made me rage quit at like 12 years old lol. I think I'm content watching you beat it at this point. You sir, are a legend.

Good show I subscribed, you got me…I don’t know anyone who could play this game growing up except myself… you have the old school tactics of a gamer from that era, unlike these speed runners I keep seeing. I beat this game as a kid, but I put hours into it. I see your extra careful in some spots where I felt so comfortable but, you seemed so confident in some spots where I wasted so much time. Whatever, you rock man thanks for the show made me want to bust out the old system..

This game was pretty darn tough, but I do recall beating it. You gotta love starting over at the beginning of the level if/when you die.

Haha, you said it! I was about to say that Ninja Gaiden was the side story of Shinobi.

Ninja Gaiden also has one of the greatest soundtracks in gaming history!

If you don’t have any weapons for the Act 3 boss, you can also take out the bullets by ducking and slashing, which, if done correctly, will destroy them both in one slash (or two slashes if you’re SUPER precise).

It is very refreshing to play an old game that is difficult but also has excellent controls. I loved the mention of Fire N Ice. I consider that one of the greatest puzzle games of all time. It needs to be turned into an app.

Well holy cow, I've been playing and beating this game since the first NES emulators came out. I had no idea there was a slash cancel move so you didn't have to use the spin attack. That's awesome to know!

This game and castlevania just haunted my childhood.

Nice Video! It's great to see other peoples take on the best tactics to beat this most excellent of ninja games. I rarely use the spin slash on the bosses, and most times don't even use whatever ninpo I have. Just ninja agility and the trusty Dragon Sword! To beat Bomberhead I just run straight at him and crouch under his attack, slash (for about half his energy), then run back to the right, duck and slash again, and it's over! With The Jaquio, I wall jump (immediately) to the top of the left hand wall/pillar, then as The Jaquio comes towards me, I jump straight at him, (not his fireballs) which bounces Ryu onto the top of the pillar he was clinging to. Then just concentrate of hitting every one of Jaq's fireballs, just ignoring the Jaquio himself, and (despite the small damage from bouncing off him), he's soon beaten with little effort. - Also, I reckon the boss Kelbeross' name is an (incorrect) phonetic translation of Cerberus (the multi-headed guard hound of Hades in Greek Mythology) I never pay much attention to which items I'm collecting , I just collect everything in my path. Though after playing this game through many times I generally know which item I'll have when I reach the odd awkward enemy , but I usually only need the basic shuriken or Windmill Star to shoot only 3 or 4 enemies throughout the entire game. (a couple across gaps - like that bat on 5-3, and those white boomerang guys). So I just let the game dictate which item I'll have at each point in the game, and it works out just fine. It seems to me that the game was designed to be raced through at pace with as little stopping as possible. I find that most seemingly impossible sections are best navigated by by just rushing to the right (or the left) and developing your ninja reflexes to just jump and slash (with perfect timing of course) in as smooth and efficient a course as possible - be a ninja basically! Ninja Gaiden is such perfection, I can't think of another ninja game that betters it - even Ninja Gaiden 2 and 3, Shinobi and Tenchu don't quite match the feeling of purpose and mastery that Tecmo created in this seminal masterpiece!

I am 35 years old and I played this game when I was around 7 years old and I completed it many times. Although I can complete it again after many years, and I feel that you lack a bit of practice.

Think I'm going to enjoy your content very much : ) edit: how on earth did I never know about the spin slash cancel... well that sure explains a lot. As a kid I seriously always thought of the spin slash more as a utility item for bird jumps etc, but would always take the big shuriken or the art of fire wheel because they were controllable and wouldn't waste all the ninpo. My god, lol... I also had no concept of a pure DPS race, and never had the spin slash, so Bloody Malth truly was the impossible warrior, for childhood me.

I’ve owned this game since 1989 and it still works. I still haven’t been able to beat it. Part 2 is even harder. Part 1 is my favorite video game of all time.

The funny thing that was always my strategy when I played this in my younger days.

There's another way to beat the Jaquio but you have to get there with at least 12 hit points on your life bar. If you shimmy up the right-hand wall and jump out at the Jaquio as he is coming at you and you slash so you are in that "jumping slash animation," the Jaquio will hit you and you will be knocked backward and if you timed it right, you will land in that hole in the wall in the upper right-hand corner of the screen. Kneel down and time your sword slashes to hit the fireballs and of course hit the Jaquio as he comes by and you'll take him out easily, you just have to get the timing of slashing the fireballs down. This works best with a turbo controller as well.

It only took me a just shade under 3 decades to beat this

I wasn't able to beat this until I got ahold of it in my mid-20s as a ROM. I'm not too proud to admit that save states were the only reason I didn't rage quit on the final boss... it still took a stupid amount tries.

Played this hard as a kid when it came out on NES. I could consistently get to Jashin, but was never able to beat him.

You can destroy Jashin's face before it hits, but you have to be extremely fast and precise.

Never had the first one but i had the second. Damn i spent so much time to get to the end.

Ryu Hayabusa can climb any walled surface, but lacks the upper body strength to pull himself up on top of them.

Man, I never knew the spinning attack was so powerful. I could make it up to the last boss when I was a kid but I don't remember if I ever beat it. I know someone beat it, but I don't remember if it was me or a friend.

The "kelberoses" can both take damage. But only one shows it and is advisable to attack. If you attack the one whose health doesn't showcase diminishing enough times. You get 2 new kelbeross. 1 of the new kelbeross will also have a health bar and killing either "with a health bar" ones will end the battle.

Pretty sure the castle collapsing and not changing was due to a programming error. Most likely, the original castle sprite was supposed to disappear and then the castle would collapse "properly."

This one has some fun odd translations. You know, Berserker, Cerberus, Bloody Mars, and Jaki-Oh all got messed over, didn't they?

I beat this game as a kid. Just recently found out the last act was supposed to be split into two acts. After the masked devil. It was intended to be another stage. That’s why act 6 has 4 parts

I was able to beat the second game in the series but im still having trouble on Jaquio second form.

i prefer the swagstar on the 3rd act, it is a great defensive weapon on that boss that you can get hits in while defending yourself. you typically don't ahve the ninpo needed to finish him without conserving it though that way but you should get him down to like a couple final hits at least edit: if you stand in the center with the windmill star there, you can take his bullets out and jump over the star, the star will hit the boss when he jumps to the other side.

Omg...I can't believe I beat this game as a kid WITHOUT knowing about the Spin Cycle 😳😳. I had to grind it out every other which way. LOL

Yeah, when he plays the arcade double dragon in the movie he is actually playing the nes version to.

For years I could always get to Jaquio. But he would always kick my ass. I've only beaten him a couple of times. I never had a problem with Jashin. He was much easier then Jaquio.

The "Castle Collapsing" animation isn't broken on real hardware BTW.

I did not realize this game was difficult. Nothing to have to look for. Just scroll and have fun. No wonky mechanics. No impossible parts. This brother is talking like it was BattleToads or Ikari Warriors.

I had no idea ,for all of these years, that pushing down while using the spin slash cancels it allowing normalcy

Cool video. Ninja Gaiden is one of my all time favorite NES games. In my heyday I could finish it on one life taking only one hit against the final boss. You're playing on an emulator which is why at the end when the mountain collapses it looks unchanged. That's an emulation bug. It doesn't happen on real hardware. The mountain actually collapses.

I didn’t have the game (my cousin did) but I had the novelization of the game.

When I was fighting Jacquio I had to use save states. On my actual NES I only got to 6-2 or 6-3. Alot of this game is muscle memory. During the end of the snow area with the cliff I remember I had to press a certain set of buttons to get across. It almost seems like a computer could be made to press buttons like a b up a, etc. When Ryu was jumping from the plane it looked like the start of Metal Gear. Maybe he is one of those other 3 guys.

One of the toughest

Ninja Gaiden part 1 was one of the most difficult games ever although good..I didn't beat part one until I was grown..part 2 wasn't as difficult..the same hold true for the first release on Xbox ironically lol

I finally finished this game thanks to you, despite the lying CIA’s best effort. I’m still trying to figure out how he is so honed and aware during fight scenes but as soon as it’s a cutscene he gets surprised all the time. Where did she shoot him? In the appendix?! He seems to be moving just fine to me

This and 2 were my life. Got to the point where i could run through both of them without dying. 2 was a hell of a lot easier though.
