Thanks to homebrew there is actually a way to get better colors and contrast on a tn panel. On the latest versions of luma if you enter the Rosalina menu there’s a feature called screen filters. Within this feature you can actually tweak your screens gamma values and temperature in order to eliminate the washed out look and increase color vibrance, just make sure you save the settings so it applies on startup. Unfortunately it still doesn’t fix the issues viewing angle’s. I’ve done some tweaking with it myself and it’s made a night and day difference on my 2ds XL.
@@NeanderMeanderI’ve actually done a bit of testing of my own by taking a look the tn panel on my old 3ds xl compared to my 2ds xl. From what I’ve seen the default temperature on the 3ds had a slightly warmer hue meanwhile the 2ds xl has a more neutral tone that’s closer to a pure white, though the difference in temperature isn’t major. As far as gamma goes I’ve found best gamma values lie around 1.25 - 1.33 in order to get a similar vibrance and contrast to a ips panel. In my case the sweet spot ended up being 1.27 but with there being so much variation with these 3ds screens it’s honestly just up to the user and whatever they think looks best. Though in the end it’s not like having one screen or the other is detrimental to the playing experience.
I love that you didn’t overhype them IPS screens. The fact that you have to thoroughly inspect from all angles or compare to another console is enough to prove that it’s a marginal difference. Also 100% on just playing the games in any way possible, especially since Nintendo has decided that they don’t see a value in selling 3DS games directly anymore. Awesome video my dude 🔥
I started writing this script thinking I would lean toward recommending everyone get a 3DS with IPS displays. After I started looking at them side by side, I changed my mind. They really aren’t all that different. I had always played on one with TN screens, so I kind of already knew the IPS screens were overhyped. I’m glad more people are agreeing with me. I thought I was going to get a lot of backlash for it. Play however you want. Man, it seems like there are people who can only accept games being played on original hardware. If it plays the games, who cares. I used to be against emulation until I opened my eyes and realized how great it is! You can do some pretty cool stuff with emulators.
also from my experience, I would say it is better to get a 3ds with a tn screen. I've noticed that ips screens tend to have really inconsistent white balance whereas tn screens usually have a more consistent white balance. yeah this is also really minor but a bad white balance is worse than bad viewing angles, ofc this is just my opinion
@@ostrichesandgin8570 It comes down to, if you are happy with TN, you won't ever notice IPS. But when you do, it's a huge difference with color and clarity. It should be overblown and hyped up because it is a big difference, but only if you have them side by side.
@@PJ-sv4iw I've seen people say this, but I'm not convinced. I'm not saying you're wrong. Maybe I'm just not sensitive to it. Hear me out; I've spent more time on the 3DS than any other console in existence. I got my first 3DS in January 2012. Almost at launch. I've spent 11 years playing every combination of 3DS screen Nintendo has ever made, including models with IPS displays. I have a few of them that I've spend significant amounts of time playing. I fly around the USA for my job. While I'm traveling I play the 3DS for hours waiting in the airports, on airplanes, and in my hotel rooms. I still play it very regularly. I just spend three days from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM shooting these consoles in the light and the dark side by side straight on and at an angle for this video and I can confidently say that none of them looked that different from each other. Both had the same clarity. You can see it in the footage. The only difference I could see what that the IPS displays look like they had a warmer tone to them. Maybe I'm really not that sensitive to it. Again, I'm not calling you wrong. I hope this doesn't come off as being negative or mean.
I paid 100 bucks a few years back for a N3DSXL with top IPS bottom TN, which is more than good enough for me. I regretted the purchase at the time, but I’m so glad that I got it now. I’ve had so much fun modding it and revising so many classics.
Wow! Only $100!? That's a really good deal now. I know how you feel. I spent $200 for most of mine brand new and I thought I had wasted my money because I had so many. Some of the special editions are currently worth insane amounts of money. I have no regrets.
This is an excellent video! There's a lot of hype around IPS screens in 3ds communities, but whenever there's an actual discussion about the screens the general consensus seems to be that most people mainly want dual IPS screens for the flex of having them, and not so much for the actual screen quality. My New 3ds XL is a top TN, bottom IPS, and the difference between the screens is barely noticeable. Like you, the sentimental value of it is what is most important to me. My father went out of his way to buy me the Galaxy edition system after my original red New 3ds XL was stolen. Nintendo replaced it with another red New 3ds XL because it was still under warranty and I was able to prove the theft had occured. My father went and got the Galaxy edition for me, and when the replacement red 3ds arrived he kept it and ended up buying Animal Crossing New Leaf to play on it. It holds a special place in my heart because of that.
I really don't see much of a difference. Even after filming them in the light and dark I couldn't hardly tell them apart. I think people just like having the absolute best, even if it's slightly better. Like you, I love my consoles because of what they mean to me. Most of them have stories attached to them. I made a video a while ago that went over most of them. I'm glad I'm not the only one that feels this way. Thank you for sharing your story. Your Dad seems like a really good guy.
I loved the video. I also loved what you said about the little details that matter to you in your hardware, the length of time you've been using it, the little scratches and the stories behind all of that, like me, I really take care of my things and establish some kind of connection with them.
Thank you so much for watching! I do that with every console I get. We spend so much time with these things, it's tough not to develop a connection with them.
Couldn't agree more with you on the standard N3DSXL interior being sterile. I recently swapped out the cstick, circle pad, and outer shells with white alternatives on my black N3DSXL. Along with replacing my ABXY buttons with the coloured ones like on the N3DS and I'm loving the look.
That sounds awesome! I would love to see a picture of it. Those standard models are so boring on the inside. I like white consoles though, so that’s probably why I primarily use my Fire Emblem New 3DS XL
@@johndou423 That sucks, sorry to hear it. The N3DSXL can be kind of a nightmare with so many ribbon cables, especially all the ones that come through the hinge.
Great video as always man. Always thought provoking and well shot. I agree with the aesthetic being important and I actually prefer my “new” 3ds (the smaller Black Friday one) because the buttons are colored. I just like the look and feel of that particular model. One cool thing about these videos is that it shows that people still love these older devices
Thank you! They are quite a bit of work to put together, reading comments like this is amazing. I also like the feel and size of the New 3DS. It just feels really good to play. The colored buttons are also an awesome touch. I wish the other models had them.
Thank you for pointing out the screen differences of the TN and IPS panels of the 3DS. But, man, congrats on your superb editing!! All aspects in your video are so pleasant to watch. Neutral and black colors. Simple but elegant. Nice narrator voice that you have. And more important, your own experiences with your consoles and accessories. I have to note that your pauses between phrases are great. You have a new subscriber!
Hey mate, I really enjoyed this video, im not an expert in videomaking but i really loved the cinematics, the storytelling, the music, your voiceover. It conveid your emotions for this console and i'm sincere, it moved me. I'd watch this kind of stuff all day long. Great great job
Dude…. I don’t know how you do it… These videos are some of the most satisfying videos out there. You make me want 15 variations of the 3DS every time I see your videos.
I'm so glad you like them! When I film them, I also want more consoles. I love them so much. I'm happy to know there are other people out there like myself.
I love your style of video and content presentation It got me to pickup my New 3DS XL and start a new game on Link Between Worlds. Thank you for that. Looking forward to your next video!
Loved the part reminiscing about getting your fav 3ds, I like how the more i travel with it, it becomes more personal with all the memories of playing the games in different locations,
I'm glad you liked that part. They really do become more personal when you travel around with them. I'm always think about where I was when I play mine.
Thanks for making this video! In the market for a 3DS and didn't even know they were made with IPS. Now I know what to look out for. Also your production value is really good!
I loved the part about being sentimental about these things one of my biggest regrest is trading in my dsi xl and 3ds xl into gamestop for all of like 30 dollars each when those consoles meant so much to me im glad im in a place now where i just recently purchased both of those consoles again same color and everything but it hard not to miss my original consoles from when i was a kid, great video man
Really nice video. Your cinematography is on point. I was contemplating buying a new 3ds xl, one choice was a lime green that I really liked, and another was a blue with cosmetic damage but it had ips. I decided to go with the lime green in part due to this video.
Thank you so much for watching this video! Also, thanks for leaving this awesome comment. I'm glad you liked my writing. I sometimes think I spend too much time writing my scripts.
This is just a random video I clicked on being a proud owner of a newly bought New Nintendo 3DS (the normal size one) and I have to say your video is so amazing, emotional, raw. It really made me appreciate the little things on my games, systems and everything I own. Thank you for making this!
I am so glad you watched the video! It's really great having you here. I do my best to present something a little different from what else is out there. I hope you stick around for future videos. I'm working on a new one right now.
They are so similar. I hear so many people talk about how big the difference is, I'm sure even they have a hard time telling them apart. Thank you for watching!
There is a huge flaw for me with the TN screen: "Ghosting" I recently got my hands on a sealed New 3ds XL on eBay and i had the amazing suprise getting a dual ips unit! I already had a classic size New 3ds with Dual TN screens, so i was super happy and the first thing i have done was to run shovel knight on both to compare. Shovel knight is a great benchmark for testing the ghosting/blur on your 3ds screens, because its a 2d pixel art game with a lot of parallax! Verdict: I can assure you that ghosting is far less noticeable and awkward on IPS panel. If you got the chance to test and compare, go ahead! Pixel update is so better on IPS, it's still not perfect of course in comparison with modern IPS and OLED displays on newer hardware like the Switch, but trust me when i say that between a 3ds TN and 3ds IPS this is night and day! Sorry if the english is bad, i hope i didn't made to much spelling mistake on my comment and that everyone understand it!
I never knew about the variants. 'Had to boot mine up to check, and it looks like it's double TN for me. 🤷♂️ I'm already over it. With how unusually expensive they've become, I'm lucky to have it at all.
A tech comparison video that focuses on experiences instead of specs. I never thought I’d live to see the day. Thank you for this. More people should consider that devices are not just their specs when making their review videos.
Tech videos focused on specs are really important, but I thought I make my video with a personal spin instead of just a list of facts. I'm glad you noticed. Thank you so much for watching
Great video! I lucked out and recently got a dual IPS model for a normal price, I wouldn't pay the higher price but it is cool. I don't think it's worth the higher asking price, but like you said a cool novelty
I've made videos in the past where I didn't include anything personal and it felt like I really didn't connect with the content. I'm glad you like them. I like to include them because I'm sure there are others with very similar stories.
Thank you so much for watching the video and leaving this amazing comment! That is the Fire Emblem Fates Special Edition New 3DS XL. It's my all time favorite version of the 3DS. I use quite a few things to make these videos. My camera is the Sony FX30. It's been amazing to shoot videos with. I use a soft box light on one side and colored LED bulbs on the opposite side to give each shot a little more dimension. I usually shoot on a sheet of glass to make reflections. I just really like that look. I also cycle through about 5 or 6 lenses depending on what shots I need. Most are prime lenses. Do you have any other specific questions about what I use or my process?
I put them on all my 3DS consoles. I'm a huge believer in protecting the screens. At the very minimum I would recommend getting one for the bottom touch screen.
Recently bought a 3DS XL New Galaxy Edition 3DS in good condition for $170, turned out it had dual IPS displays! Never knew it was a thing but immediately noticed something was different from my black new 3DS XL I was replacing. Brightness for one seemed different and more cool white forsure. Did research and found out about IPS displays. Great video!
@@NeanderMeander of course, we are sharing the same adiction to Zelda....the only reason i got a OLED Switch, cause up to this date i was totaly happy playing on my switch lite....but after seeing the totk Switch in store and in person, i can't stop my self from bying....and now i'm so happy, cause it looks awesome and the OLED display is making Handheld gaming so much better....sorry for my horrible english, but it is a foreign language after all....but long story short, i'd love to see your take on this
I may have traded using my Pikachu New 2DS XL that has a corruption data issue to hacking and using my old 2DS Mario Maker edition I purchased and kept sealed for years, but it makes me realize the beauty of consoles cosmetically, rather than the minor specs that you describe. The new 3DS and 3DS XL basic models may feel "sterile" like you mentioned, but something about the 2DS' cosmetic designs always made me feel like home, my own personal console. It made me feel like it belonged to me and I believe that's very important job for a handheld to give, to make it feel like yours.
Very well said. I like the way you worded this. A console needs to connect with you personally. Even if that's the standard colors. If it resonates with you, that's amazing.
I'm so happy you agree with me. We get caught too up with specs. Playing the game is way more important. I don't care how anybody plays them. Just play them.
Hello can I ask if N3DS XL Samus Edition is TN or IPS? I found online a cheap of this but the paint chips was bit off so it sold as 180$ CFW, the seller didn't know if its TN or IPS but I saw your video you have one can you please tell me?
I just bought a New 3DS XL in near perfect condition a couple weeks back. Anyone know how to fix the screen wobble? I looked at 5 different ones and all had the wobble except one that looked like it was used for a hockey puck
I'm so glad you liked it! I try not to babble on too much about things. I want people to be engaged through the whole thing. Hopefully I was able to do that with this one.
I can see the difference between the screens, the ips screen looks more yellow than the tn screen. Tbh, I dont really care about the screen type because im not going to be looking at it from an angle.
Yeah, it really isn't that important to go searching out IPS displays. The differences are so small when you look at them directly. Which is the position all of us play our 3DS's in.
I think the problem here is people need to own both consoles to see the difference if it's an IPS screen or not after that they'll always know going forward, anyone who hasn't had an IPS screen or vice versa would not be able to tell
I think you’re right. Seeing both next to each other helps. Though, I still have a hard time seeing it even though I have both. Maybe it depends on the person.
Great video. I got an original 3ds from Japan for $36 a couple of months ago and it's in excellent condition. But since then I've thought about buying a new 3ds XL. I might still buy one, but the Original 3ds is still great, and like you said, it's the games and the memories that matter.
The original 3DS is one of my favorites. I has a look and feel that is unlike any other handheld Nintendo has ever made. It's a very premium looking and feeling device.
Bought my dual ips new xl over a year ago just before I think 3ds got a huge price increase which I’m in love with because I went from my original model to the best
Do there exist 3rd party IPS screens? I noticed the top screen on my original model 3DS XL has one spot brighter than the other and both screens on my launch model 3DS have seen better days so if I can get IPS screens for both systems, that'll make them even better!
I own a New 3DSXL and its the galaxy one and I had to see what I had so I got the 3dsident CFW app and it says my 3ds is a new 3ds xl (red) which isnt true but says my top and bottom screens are TN.
I personally think they look great. I know there are those that will say otherwise, but I could hardly tell the difference filming this video. Only at an angle could I detect that they were different. I say play with whatever you have.
Not from what I can tell. You need to turn them on and look at them at an angle to see the difference. It's really not that easy to tell them apart unless you know what you're looking for.
man the 3DS is such a sick console. I definitely don't think it got the love it deserved when it was still supported but it's easy to tell that people are looking back at the console very fondly these days.
my old screen turn orange to green when i looked to the side of the battery, i got a ips this time and feel like it looks worse then the other one i bought. maybe it was a replacement screen that's not that good
Just found out that my red new 3ds xl Ive had since middle school has both TN screens. I'm weirdly happy though, it just means that I loved and still love playing on it despite TN even after Ive graduated college. It truly is a magical device and I can't wait to keep on gaming on it forever!
It really is a magical device. I think TN screens are perfectly fine. They look almost exactly the same as the consoles with IPS displays. I think the whole topic between the two screen types is way overblown.
I’ve got the fire emblems special edition too! it released just as I was planning to buy a 3ds, so I got it without much thought. Had no idea it was apparently so sought after tbh, I just liked the design. I saw people online throwing around the terms ips/ tn, so I clicked on the video in curiosity. Made me realise my emblem ds has an upper ips and a lower tn. This doesn’t change my love of this console too much, but it is kinda neat to realise my favourite hand held is also kinda like a shiny Pokémon.
Boy, you last few words about which is your favourite condole is powerful and so right! He’s not about which screen type is better - it’s about which console you feel the strongest connection with for various reasons.
I sometimes sit on these scripts for a few days thinking about what message I want to send. that one came to me and I really liked it. I'm glad you did too! Thank you so much for watching
Can you make a video about the PSVita and your opinions about the console. I have a new 3ds xl galaxy and PSVita1000 both are super great console and easy to mod.
I can definitely make a video about the Vita. I don't have as much experience with it as I do the 3DS handhelds, but I'll give it a go. I might not be able to get to it for a while though. I have a pretty packed schedule for the next few months.
If you're into PC gaming and monitors at all, then you know both TN and IPS panels have their pros and cons. A fast TN display can make a slower IPS display look like a blurring/ghosting mess in motion. Considering Nintendo's choice of panels for the New 3DS XL was so random they ended up mixing display technologies, I wouldn't be shocked at all if some of the TN panels they used actually look better in motion than some of the IPS panels they used. Viewing angles and brighter colors aren't everything.
Thank you so much for writing this comment. I don't think many people understand this. The whole discussion around this topic has gotten way out of hand. I wanted to make this video to shed some light on it. Most people can't even tell the difference anyway.
Oooh, I just checked mine, and I've got 2 of the IPS displays, with only my New 3DS (non-XL) being a TN display. I thought it was just the fact that my N3DS was getting old, while my N3DS XL and N2DS XL screens were just bigger, and newer; but now it makes a lot of sense!
As far as I remember the IPS N3DS Models were a bit heavier (like 1-4 grams). I've read that there were people with scales specifically looking for those models. I myself am using a dual IPS N3DS (aquired it with pure luck) and I have a dual TN as a Backup (in case my daily driver somehow fails) and honestly, it's great to have those popping colours but regarding gameplay it doesnt really matter as you stated. I also like the look of the N3DS Models over the N3DSXL ones because of this "sterility", as their buttons are at least coloured in the SNES button colours
I didn't know that people were weighing them! Wow! That's a whole new level. I would have included that in this video had I known. I also like the New 3DS. I think the size is fantastic!
I bought my first 2DS XL one month ago. It's a white system with orange buttons and I really like it. I have a Switch and a PSP wich is my favourite handheld ever, but maaaan the 2DS is such a nice device. I played Super Mario 3D Land, Star Fox 64 3D (such a great game), Mario Kart 7, New Super Mario Bros 2, Donkey Kong 94, DKC Returns, the mini games for the original NSMB and can't wait to play Ocarina of Time for the first time.
I just picked up that same New 2DS XL! It looks really good in person! You'll have to let me know what you think of Ocarina of Time. I played it for the first time on the 3DS as well
The thing I love about your videos most, is that they have such an incredible way to invoke my own memories of the 3DS. I'm always guaranteed to get those warm fuzzy feelings about the console. And I always think to myself, "Have I been giving the console enough lately?" Which I know I am, but still my answer is always no and I feel like I have to play it at that moment. It might be a bit weird to say or feel but I'm truly grateful for your videos. I feel like I'm watching my brother in arms talk about the console. Your videos always drive to keep investing in the console. I want to make sure that I will always be able to play these games no matter. Whether its TN or IPS I just want to play. Another great video my dude! 🫡
This was an amazing read tonight! Thank you so much for writing it. When I started making these videos I wanted this very thing to happen. I wanted people to want to play more video games and enjoy them the way I do. I also wanted them to think about the consoles they are playing on. I really love gaming hardware and I want more people to look at them and appreciate what amazing things we have access to. Thank you again for watching and leaving this comment. It was awesome to read!
What a great video! It’s been a couple of years that I’ve been into ips screens for multiple consoles and when I found out that there is no direct way to buy a 3ds with an ips AND that some came with both or only one (upper or bottom) i just gave up. My New3DS (non xl) is a non ips and I’ve never had any problem with playing on its TN screens. The only thing is with GBA games that don’t look good on it but I think it’s because of the stretched aspect ratio. So I modded my GBA, SP and GB Color with ips’s and the problem was solved 😁 thank you for your honnesty about ips, yeah they are great (especially when you mod a GBA SP or a GB Color) but TN is also good if you already own a 3DS.
Thank you for watching! I've been interested in doing that to a few of my Game Boys, but I'm not sure I have the technical skills necessary to pull it off. I did do a screen replacement for one of my original Game Boy Advance systems. It's was tricky, but I was able to do it. Maybe I'll give it a try on the others.
@@NeanderMeander You should try it! And there is solderless ips mod available for the original GBA and SP. The soldering part is usually done to controle the brightness. But some screens don’t even require soldering because the screen comes with a touch sensor. Anyways, you should try, soldering is not that difficult 😊 i’m sure you’ll pull it off easily 👍🏽 the trickiest solder mod that I’ve done was the battery mod for the GBC. The soldering part on the other mods was not that difficult. Oh, and i subscribed keep up the good work!
Wonder if you’re going to go through the trouble to obtain the Flashcarts and do a history lesson on modding. I managed to obtain a complete Gateway cart and I use it for my red o3DS that I bought sealed last year.
@@NeanderMeander Literally got it for $300 right as they were going up to the thousands. Legit got lucky. Even filmed an unboxing that I have yet to edit and upload to a public channel. I feel you on doing Justice though, there’s so many things I’ve written but I don’t have the inspiration or time to research a lot of it so anything I do have is either filmed with no editing or stays in the script draft limbo.
@@pr9334 I have a ton of partially written scripts because I just don’t have enough information to to write a full script. Making videos is a ton of work that I don’t think people realize.
I've had two 3DS consoles. My first was the original XL and my second was a New XL. I'm not sure what the original was for panels, but it was the basic blue one. My new one is the galaxy design with top and bottom TN panels. I got the galaxy one because of how fun it looked in comparison, and I swear the 3D is way better on the newer model.
Little update on my 2ds journey in 2023: Finished almost every game on the 3ds family of consoles I wanted to play. I am reserving myself Luigi's Mansion 1-2 for October (horror/halloween-themed month), otherwise I have backed up all my games and continue to play some of them on the Steam Deck (now that the Citra emulator has finally started supporting Vulkan, which means the Steam Deck has a good time emulating 3ds). Great console...will probably a second special edition one when I travel to Japan next year.
Awesome! I need to play the first two Luigi’s Mansion games too. I’ve heard they are really good. I just about bought a SteamDeck last week when they were on sale. I just couldn’t do it though. If they go on sale again, I’ll probably spring for it.
@@NeanderMeander do it man, you will have a great time :) It's become my favourite console ever, just so much you can do with it and the performance and comfort of it are just perfect for me.
Your video was highly entertaining and inspirational to watch so I wanted to share my journey with the 3DS. I'm a late adopter for this console and I'll be honest, around a year ago I had a nasty breakup with my first 3DS which was a New 3DS XL Galaxy Edition. I had bought one some years back in "played" condition (which didn't bother me) alongside a few good games for around $100 which, by all accounts, was a great deal. The problem was that I never really bonded with this console. I wasn't into the library as much as I felt I should have been and I always complained about certain design choices that went into the "New" 3DS models like the placement of the stylis and cartridge port compared to the older models. I also noticed that DS games just don't look as nice as they did on my DSi XL, especially with that black border that's around the screen for DS games. The console also wasn't as comfortable in my hands as I wanted it to be. The final straw was when I got frustrated at the region lock that the 3DS has and, as a result, I sold my XL alongside all my games and continued to play my DS library on my DSi XL which I still love. Fast forward a year or so after that breakup and I've decided to try again with the 3DS... by not getting a 3DS lol. In all seriousness, I say that because I bought an original 2DS in hopes that its form factor, sturdy build and cheaper price may persuade me to try again with this game library. Well I'm happy to say that it worked. The console feels great to hold in my hands, all the buttons feel nice and the placement of the cartridge slot and stylis is where god intended them to be lol. Having a different model of the 3DS family that feels better to me has helped open my desire to try this consoles library once more. I just bought both Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire to play and I'm looking to soft mod my 2DS so I can remove the region lockout and try playing Yu-Gi-Oh ZEXAL Duel Carnival for the first time (yes, I am a fan and collector of the Yu-Gi-Oh video games and ZEXAL was JP and PAL only). I may even try to see how the OG 3DS and the non-new 3DS XL feel to use, but only if I can get them at reasonable prices.
Thanks for sharing this. I also like the placement of the cartridge slot on the back. it's weird it was moved to the front on the "New" models. DS games definitely look better on a DS, even the DS Lite. Having the games fill the screen is way better than those black borders. That's so cool you were able to get into the 3DS by buying an original 2DS! It's great that Nintendo made so many revisions to the hardware. It's allowed more people to jump in because we all have different tastes. I hope you continue to play 3DS games. Let me know if you get those other systems and what you think about them. Thank you for watching this video!
@@NeanderMeander Per request, I've got an update for you! So I decided to go for a non-"new" 3DS XL that had been refurbed with a really clean and quality Charizard shell. I just received and opened up the package for it today and OH MY FREAKING GOD this thing is awesome! Nearly everything about the original XL feels great. The buttons all have a nice tactile feel to them just like my DSi XL, the console as a whole feels decent enough to hold by itself, the screens are gorgeous to look at even if they are TN screens and, just like my 2DS, the cartridge and stylis slots are exactly where they should be. While waiting, I also picked up a Circle Pad Pro from my local game store since it looked like it would at least make the whole affair more comfortable to hold in my big hands and it certainly does just that even if it's not that functional. Some games I want to play do use it though like Majora's Mask and Resident Evil Revelations. I did get to sample an original 3DS at the same store I bought my CPP at and it doesn't feel awful, but that one DEFINITELY needs a CPP for it before I'd consider using it for any kind of daily play. It's just too small for 3D style games and the D-Pad sits too low for my thumb to consider comfortable. Everything else feels pretty ok, but since I'm sitting on a 2DS and an original 3DS XL I'm in no rush to pull my wallet out for yet another 3DS console. On a side note, I finally modded my 2DS to play imports so I finally got to try Yu-Gi-Oh ZEXAL Duel Carnival like I said I wanted to. I'm glad to finally start feeling some adoration for the 3DS this time around. I plan on getting WAY more games than I thought I'd ever want just because the consoles I chose are a much better fit for me. You and your videos also played a part in getting me into the 3DS again. Thanks for bearing with my long response again and stay cool. :)
@@SkyScourgeGod My apologies for getting to this so late. This is an excellent update! I love the feel of the original 3DS XL. I had a red one that I played for years. I wish I still had it. I never picked up the Circle Pad Pro. I considered getting one, but by that time they were already sold out at stores. It looks like it would make it much more comfortable to play. As per this video, I think TN screens look perfectly fine. I have been using them for years and can hardly tell any difference between the IPS displays. I have both and have used both. You're not missing out by having the TN screens. I absolutely love the original 3DS. It's insanely compact! It feels like a premium device. But that size does cramp my hands after a while. Though I'll always have a soft spot for it. It was my first Nintendo handheld after taking a break from gaming around the GBA era. The 3D blew my mind when I first saw it. I'm currently on the hunt for the purple version. That's really cool you were able to play that game. I remember you talking about it. I haven't been able to get around to it. There's so many games I need to play. I don't think I'll ever get caught up. Thank you so much for coming back and writing this update. It so good to hear that you've been able to do things you set out to do. Also, thank you so much for watching my videos. I'm just a guy that likes video games and enjoys the process of film making. I'm so happy to know that people like you have watched some of them and liked them. Keep me updated in the future. Thanks again.
I believe that my 3ds is TN, the colours wash out a little but hardly noticeable and I have an old pc monitor released like 18 years ago, that also is TN and that is next to unreadable when looking at it from the side, so I'd say the TN 3ds is still pretty good
The 3DS's with TN screen look really nice. I've always wondered what the big deal was between them. It turns out there not all that different. I think they are a little on the cooler side with the colors compared to the IPS screens that have a more warm look to them.
My N3DSXL has an IPS top screen and a TN bottom screen. I wasn't hunting for IPS, I just bought a random system and got lucky. Although IPS screens don't change too much from TN, I much prefer IPS. I upgraded from an original XL with TN screens, to my current system, and I can see the difference.
I love the fire emblem 3ds as well. Had a galaxy edition with both ips screens, but it looked dull on the inside like you said. Plus you can increase the brightness to get it more colorful.
I play the Galaxy edition on occasion. I do like that it's a purple/blue color. I love the Fire Emblem Fates edition! I love the color choices Nintendo made with it.
Dude I swear I had a red new 3ds xl in 2016 that had a top IPS display but the hinge broke off and it stopped working so my mom threw it away. Now all I have is the cosmo black 3ds but the R button is broken and the circle pad is loose...
That's too bad! Throwing away a console because of a broken hinge is rough. Also having a broken shoulder button isn't good either. Hopefully you can fix it somehow?
@@NeanderMeander Yea like I can’t drift in Mario kart 7 or grab vines in Donkey Kong country returns 3D. But I somehow never thought to search up if I can fix it myself yet so I’ll do it today because the library goes hard. I loved country returns 3D, lego city undercover the chase begins, Ocarina 3D, Mario 3D land, pushmo, odd ones out like Spider-Man edge of time, too many games to list.
I wound up with both the dual IPS and the dual TN. I got one online through GameStop while the website was displaying none available by changing the address in my search bar to a color that wasn’t listed on their site and they said in stock. The second I got through a trade of 3 broken original model 3Ds I got for $20 each. I think TN is better when it comes to the retro games since the IPS make everything a little darker.
@@NeanderMeander I want 2 of them haha. I keep mine nice and the original box. Those Hori flexi whatevers are not available anymore! I can attest that they do work well and don't leave scratches. I hope the predecessor to the switch releases a metroid special edition model.
as someone who came from my original 2DS when it broke, I somehow lucked out and got a dual IPS New 3DS for Christmas. I love love love my DSi XL because of how good the IPS screens are on it compared to the regular DS and DSi, but it's really not that big of an upgrade for the 3DS models I don't feel like. It's weird though, I never knew it was possible to get an IPS bottom screen and TN top screen, I always assumed you either got dual IPS, or a TN at the top and IPS at the bottom. All that being said, I just manages a small surgery on my unit, the screen lens was pretty badly scratched on the top screen along where the lip on the bottom screen is, and I also had a rogue scratch I have no clue how I gained, but after a bit of painful ribbon cable plugging and unplugging, and very carefully peeling off the front lens, I finally managed to get it off, and get the replacement in. I do feel like the super stable 3D might be a little worse than it was before? but it's very hard to tell and it never was great to begin with, so I'm pretty happy with the result. This video has been on my backlog for a few days now, and it's going to be my treat while I clean up from my little project. Thanks a lot for making this!
That's great you were able to get that lens replaced! I haven't ever tried to fix a 3DS in any way. That's mainly because I haven't had to, but I really don't want to dive into the system. I've heard it's extremely tedious and difficult to pull off. Sounds like you have some real skills!
Great video as always, my younger sister is in town so I've been away, been very nice! I really dont pay too much attention to the screen as it really didn’t matter a whole lot as long as I can play the game what type it is isnt important. I really enjoy watching your videos, I really need to update my camera as well as stream technologies, you had mentioned you use anamorphic lenses, that is magnificence. It definitely shows. I myself have been preparing the next 2 episodes of "Power Up!" as this is the "summer" section of episodes, so I'm looking to do my cinematic format that I started last season, as it lets me stretch my creative legs as an artist on here. As I consider you a wonderful creative on here as well. Take care always Neander. Til the next. 🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️🎮🖖😊Marcus
Marcus! It's so good to see you here! I look forward to your new episodes. I use few anamorphic lenses. Mainly for my handheld shots and the down pans. Though I also use prime spherical lenses. You can tell when I use those because the image is really sharp. It's cool you're looking into lenses and gear. I love talking about gear. I spend so much time behind a camera, it's good to talk to someone who is also interested in it. I hope you have fun with your sister. I'm glad you're doing well. Thank you again for watching the video
That’s because it really isn’t that big of a deal. It’s barely noticeable. That’s why I too make this video to show that the whole debate doesn’t really matter. Just enjoy the games with whatever you have.
Just keep on top of new listings. If I'm looking for one, I'll look at what's available locally, then move on from there. I try to avoid eBay because most listing there seem to be more expensive than other places. I also try to throw out offers to people who accept them. I also always try to get additional photos. I like to see every angle before I throw down a bunch of money. I hope this helps.
Just bought a used good condition N3DS (not XL) for $200 (ridiculous price) after looking for one for a while now. I was actually looking for a XL version but as you said, as i started looking at pictures of then i got bored, theyre so plain looking, it actually made me less excited by the idea of buying them, but then i saw the regular N3DS , interchangable face plates and colored buttons, i loved it and was lucky enough to find a unicorn (one with dual IPS screens). Been pretty happy with it.
after watching this, I had to check my 3ds. My n3dsxl is top ips and bottom tn. It is super sentimental and I love it. I have a skin and have modded it with usbc charging and a capture card and it is my #01 console if I want something to play
