@lucasgoudie1851
@lucasgoudie1851 10 лет назад
ToniSkit I was. the one that set the bar for todays designs was the SNES controller. I get that it was revolutionary for having an analogue stick, but thats a feature of the controller. The design of it was undeniably shit. I mean fuck, did any games even use the left section of the controller? YEESH.
@AlexysRM
@AlexysRM 9 лет назад
Lucas Goudie The design makes sense when you think about it. Back then 3D games were a very new thing, and Nintendo wasn't sure if they were going to be successful, or if developers still wanted to focus on more traditional 2D style games. Because of this they couldn't commit to designing the entire controller around using the analog stick like you see today. They compromised by allowing you to hold it like a traditional D-Pad controller for 2D games on the outer grips, but then move your hand to the inner grip for newer 3D games like Mario 64.

I have no problems at all with the original n64 controller. Instead, it's even 1 of my favorites. The worst (analogue) controller is in my opinion the first generation sony PSP. that thumbstick....arrrrgh

Watching this video I really put myself into the shoes of a gamer at this time... I can't even imagine processing the N64 and PS1 when a hot second ago you were still playing fairly limited 2D games. Now Super Mario 64 might look a bit dated, but can you imagine the first time seeing Mario in 3D, and being able to move and jump fluidly in all directions?? This was such a huge leap that, despite the amazing developments in gaming ever since, the N64 and PS1 are still modern consoles to me. They've aged, but they are still responsive and intuitive to use - I still play them both!

You put last gen consoles next to current gen and it will take you a moment to tell which one is which,.....now put a n64 next to a super nes and you could tell in a second which was next gen.there will never be a leap in console generation difference than the n64 days and I'm glad I was there on day one,...still play my n64 and gold copy of ocarina of time...
@anexr
@anexr 5 лет назад
what are you talking about? i can ask you the same question. If you were to put the nintendo vs the super nintendo in a graphics comparison for some games you wouldnt be able to tell which came first. Yes there def was a leap in graphical improvement just like a current next gen console graphical leap. The difference is that they decided to go with a 3d look instead of the traditional 2d that is why it felt like such a big leap in advancement. The same leap can be seen in every next gen console. For example lets compare metal gear solid (ps1) vs metal gear solid 2 (ps2) the technological jump has insane now lets take it to current gen consoles. Uncharted 3 vs Uncharted 4 there is also a huge jump between the ps3 and ps4. I can go on and on. Usually It takes around the end of the consoles life cycle to truly see the technological leap because developers have a much deeper understanding of the consoles and therefore we can see games like God of war vs God of war 3 or try comparing the new Red dead redemption 2 vs GTA V which was from last generation and people will tell you in a heart beat which one came first : ) .

Man this was magical to watch. 1996 was my favorite year in videogames, I got a Playstation early in the year and a n64 for Christmas. Watching him play Mario brings me back to the first time I played it on the kiosk, probably in November '96, except I did footrace up the hill. I was only nine years old and had a dropped jaw the whole time. The graphics were mind blowing from Yoshi's Island. I used to spend my whole allowance on Rice Krispies Treats Cereal in hopes of winning a system.

Thing about the 90's is that they used such flashy marketing buzz words to desribe technology and video games because at the time most people don't know shit. Nowadays seems companies just dont try to sound fancy anymore.

I love that 90's sloppiness, it's not all clean and smooth, it's nowhere near as FUN. Storm trooper says "move along," there's that awesome stuff UNDER THE FLOOR, you walk into the room and there's a freaking infographic on the wall about Nintendo's controller innovations(including a two-screen handheld, I think the Game & Watch; foreshadowing at its finest). Nowadays we get sterile old Nintendo guys pitching the Wii U to grandparents and children. Gawd I miss that retro crap.

Changing the elevation of terrain back then was actually a really big hit on the performance. Mario 64 was initially co-op, one person could play Mario and the other could play Luigi. But they could only do it in a flat world. Raising terrain with co-op wold break everything. Video games have come so far haven't they?
