The calmer the screen is, the more believable. No high pitched demonic glitching, no blood, just a silent "This is a pirated copy of 'insert game here'.

Imagine if the villagers in Animal Crossing started ignoring you/insulting you, every object you got by fishing would be an old boot, shops would be innacesible, and after some time you literally get thrown into jail.

New horizons is my favourite, because it looks like something Nintendo would actually do. They don’t want to scare new fans from enjoying their games, just a friendly “Whoops! You made a mistake!” On top of that, the way they weave the screen into the story is really cool

And the weird thing is that it came out of no where too. Honestly, this might be my favorite trend ever.

The Mario 64 screen is really convincing actually. It’s not trying to be creepy it just is and I think that makes it very believable.

Fun fact: For the Miitopia one, that's actually music from the game. When your party members get captured, after you get a new job, it switches to this scene with the kidnapped party members (with the exception of the Realm of the Fey members.

The ACNH one looks so legit, no spooks, no scares, just not letting you play the video game for pirating it.

As a lover of the "impaired game experience" approach to piracy deterrence, I really like the "I don't serve thieves" bit just on its own. Like, imagine playing Mario Party, except you're barred from the item shops.

The funniest part of these screens is that some of them are straight up 2010 Creepypasta material, and that’s great.

i can imagine a kid getting a pirated mario odyssey for a birthday present and just gettlng jumpscared

These are all genuinely terrifying, imagine someone sells you a pirated copy of one of these (especially odyssey) as a kid and you see that anti piracy screen, I would never play Mario games again

I figured that out myself a few days after getting paranoid when looking at a picture with the same color combo. That’s why the color combination is often tied to Halloween.

I agree with a lot of the choices made. I absolutely love the ones that seem realistic to the game yet still have a very spooky vibe, such as the Miitopia one or the animal crossing wild world one. The jumpscare ones are well made also, but I feel like they try to be too scary to the point that it doesn’t work as well.

The most terrifying sound from Nintendo stuff a long time ago was the Nintendo 3DS’s “Nintendo ID deletion (if you own a 3DS you know which one) warning sound” i don’t know why it just genuinely terrified me

If that may be the case, Nintendo has no chill!

The less crappy creepypasta-esque, the better.

I remember from playing miitopia on the 3ds that the creepy music was actually in the game. It’s in the stage where you fight the darkest lord. It plays before the battle and it’s called “Darker lord’s domain.”

I actually like the ACNH one a lot, yes it's kinda chill but so is Animal Crossing! It just feels natural because it doesn't break the aesthetic, instead of suddenly "haha ur a criminal spoopy haha"

the acnh ones are honestly the best. they are realistic, not scary but just chilling and in a way creepier than the jumpscare ones. especially the one where they let you stay on the island even after they caught you but you are all alone, that is just scary in its own way.

I think the Mario Galaxy one is the most realistic. If you've seen Spyro's actual anti piracy screen, you know that at some point a character in the game says you are running a pirated copy, and then the game continues but it starts acting up. The Mario Galaxy one was kinda like that.

My favorite ones are the gamecube ones where it uses the unique assets of the gamecube BIOS, the remixed music which feels like a combination of the menu music and the gameboy player error, and it feeds off of my primal error of my childhood console being locked up and unplayable. Super cool one.

The Mario 64 anti-piracy screen looked and felt the most realistic.

The mario galaxy one actually gave me goosebumps at the begining. It's kind of sad. And the end is kind a chilling

The only two Nintendo games I can think of off the top of my head with actual anti piracy measures are Kirby's Dream Course and Earthbound.

For me the most realistic and plausible ones are the best. That's why the first Mario Party DS video that started it all got viral, it looks legit and is not some low effort creppypasta type stuff.

Fun fact: The beep sound when the game crashes is actually an error code indicating brick or blown fans during the boot process in the Wii/Wii U. I learned this the hard way :/
