What do you think of this style of video? I was going for relaxing so I hope that comes through and you enjoyed just sitting back and relaxing for a bit.
Keep it coming, I loved! Ah, and thanks for doing this tiny piece of console the justice it deserves. When I see a injured little console I almost cry, hehe.
@@GrumpyWolfTech I'm no longer doing repairs as a service so my business is 100% online now so luckily everything is basically the same for me. I feel very lucky...there are a lot of businesses struggling right now.
Big fan of this video! Honest constructive criticism, I personally thought the music choice was a tad annoying. But I liked the video approach! EDIT: Just the first song bothered me. The second song I thought was very fitting
If they could talk and tell stories, my Original Xbox would be: -He played too much Halo and Forza, He didn't even bother removing my Clock Capacitor.... Now my disc drive ain't working si he pulled my guts out, I mean ALL of them and turned me into a PC case like how LinusTech turned one of my cousin into one
If you ever do one again the hinges can go in easier if you rotate them out first they’ll click if you twist them then you can slide them in with the case open. Way easier than trying with the hinges in the closed positions
The SP was such a bid deal when I was a kid. No more burning through piles of AA batteries, no more unlit screen! The only thing I disliked about it was the lack of a headphone jack.
While i love the relaxed feel of the video, i miss your cheerful tone when doing the fixes Not saying you should abandon the relaxed tone either, just ita fun to hear you having fun repairing
thank you for the endlessly entertaining and informative vids, tanks to you,i now own a ifixit kit and successfully restored my childhood gba sp and the faulty sound that lead me to look here. newer old school toothbrush for those soft bristles or something similar, Q tips, and iso... cant get easier or more fun
Have you ever consider modding one of your GBA's with an IPS display? the difference is like night and day with a clear and crisp image compared to the stock screen.
2:51 the way the ribbon cable is rolled in the hinge is brilliant. Prevents high bend and the cable breaking. I wish many laptops would have a similar reliable hinge design.
Most laptops I've dealt with were great on their screen connector. Idk what you've been dealing with but usually you don't even have to disassemble the lower part of the computer just the power button/speaker bezel and the screws and connector are right there and it pops off
You're right, "restoration" would be more appropriate had he taken _restorative_ measures (like fixing the scratches / paint) on the original shell, while it is more appropriate to say that this Gameboy was "refurbished", given its new shell and battery (which may not be unoriginal to the GBA SP in general, but is, at least, to the unique console). It's not a super big deal, in my opinion, as I feel this was completely a mistake, given how close the two words are, however it is slightly misleading. I, myself, was mislead-ed into watching the video as I thought as well he would attempt to fix the original shell (i.e., restore), however I have no qualms, as it was still a quality video
One approach would be plastic fillers but that involves repainting. You can also try a thick polish but that wont fix deep scratches. MY best result is a light sanding after a thorough cleansing, some very light filling with plastic filler and then repaint it custom. if you want to keep it original you can try to find the specific color but good luck with that.
Bought an identical GBSP days ago for like $3. Guy on flea market says his son spill some juice on it and it just wont turn on. Lucky me i opened it and use alcohol to clean the mess and now its working just fine😃
Man, I really love your stuff. Even something that "simple" of cleaning a dirty case just makes the starting weekend even better. Have you ever considered repairing some really old consoles like an Atari or a Master System? I guess that would be quite the challenge hence the lack of spare parts.
@@Tronicsfix actually Atari Is Easy the older Atari consoles are mostly off the shelf parts you can even buy today the Atari Jaguar however now there is a monster of a repair
@@Tronicsfix master system make sure you get the original power supply with it the original master system the longer rectangle model has a propritory power supply you cannot nor would i recommend a universal power supply they burn out easy and really easy the master system 2 however is a more basic power supply
wow after watching this video I want to kick myself. I used to buy returns and whatnot from a liquidator and in one of the trailers I got there were over a hundred Gameboys of all types. I played around with them see which ones worked and got maybe 20 that did and just threw the rest in the dumpster.
hey, I noticed in this video you sounded a bit more quiet or sad then usual, It would be nice to see the enthusiasm of your other videos on it as well XD
I was going for a more calm vibe. I enjoy watching restoration videos that are more on the relaxing side...that's what I was going for but idk if that will work for my channel or not. Thanks for noticing. We'll see how many views this gets and whether my audience likes it or not.
i enjoy your videos and this one was no different, but i'm hung up on calling this a restoration. it's less a restoration and more a remake or makeover. the old case went completely out the window, it wasn't restored. still love the video! keep it up!!
So much nostalgia damn, this was the first game console I have ever had as my birthday gift from my mom , its so expensive but my mother still manage to bought it , tks mom for making ny childhood awesome
Check out old car restorations. They often use fabricated parts and replicas. Replicas are just fabricated parts you can buy from someone else. The new GBA SP shell he installed was a replica, you know. ;) That means "restoration" is as accurate as it would be for a car restoration that involves replica parts.
@@ATTE22 Only because we are stubbornly trying to create a distinction where there probably shouldn't be. Heck, if you accept that bootleg games are now called "repros" even though they are not officially back in production then you kinda have to accept this as a reproduction shell being used to restore an old handheld.
3:03 Love this shot of all the parts laid out together. Really makes it evident just how complex these handhelds really are. Love the vid! Hope you do more like it!
Hey tronics i have a question about my ps4, so my ps4 was really loud so i decided to clean out the dust and replace the thermal paste. But now it is alot quieter however it only runs fir about 2 minutes before it says "ps4 too hot" then shuts down with a red light. This makes no sense because it was working completely fine before(other than the loud fan) and it never did that. Please help me find a solution
some people like to use brand new IPS screens, brand new shells, and stuff like that, if i were to restore one of these, (which i have an AGS-101 right beside me right now) i'd use a slightly scratched shell, because completely unscratched ones look wrong in my opinion
I dropped my gameboy and it snapped in half, nothing a new shell can’t fix, but the ribbon shell snapped in half, please respond so I can know how to fix it or where to get a new one (1:55)
i still have mine from when i was a kid. similar to yours. sadly, it was infested with ants and presumably internally damaged. i wish there was a way to restore it:(
The replacement lens is the only piece I’ve found that’s halway quality. IMO there is no comparison in new hinges/shells/buttons. I’ll take a scratched up original shell and buttons any day over a repro! New hinges are sometimes a must however, in the event your originals are toast.
Wow you did a good job you know my cousin gave me a free gameboy advance sp pearl pink edition it just needed a new case, the ribbion cable for the screen was detached, and it needed a new battery and now it works perfectly with pokemon emerald!
What if youre xbox one s stops working like mine i dropped a little water on top of the xbox where the fan is and the i tried turn it on the it makes a water noise and the noise of the xbox switch ing off what should I do? To fix my xbox
small note! the hinges went in the wrong way. the grooves weren't aligned so the screen will stay floppy with the way you dropped em in..they shouldn't need more than light finger pressure to get in. :) hope that helps
A tip, the hinges go in and out without forcing them, when you insert them correctly the cover opens and closes with the traditional click, I see that the moment you removed the hinges of the scratched case you used a lot of force and when reusing them in the new case You put them back and used a lot of force again, so they were badly put on you and now the console does not do the classic click to open and close the screen ...
Exactly. There is a trick to it: First, you need to open to the detent position where the screen supports itself without trying to spring open or closed. This is the only position where tabs and slots all line up between both halves of each hinge and both halves of the shell. Second, you need to release the clips on the inside before pushing the hinges out. I have a video showing how to do it with a piece from a common Bic ink pen (Bic Round Stic). Makho has a video showing how to do it with a 3D printed piece he designed. Next, keep track the left and right hinge. Don't mix them up. They need to go back in the same orientation. When reinstalling them hold the screen frame in the approximate position of the detent and wiggle it as you push the hinge in. This will get all the tabs through the slots. Forcing the hinges out in the closed position will ruin the alignment, can crack the shell, and risks stabbing yourself with the screwdriver. Don't do it!
I have one of these backlit models. I wish I had kept my front lit one years ago because the screan blurring on the backlit ones suck. I just use my phone and a XBOX One controller with a phone clip to play GBA now. I don't have to carry the 30 something games that I have for my GBA around either. I should probably sell all of it.
As much as I love these displays, so many of the early gba games look weirdly off on anything outside of the AGS-001, such as DKC 1&2 and Wario Land 4. The colours and lighting just feel wrong. I just wish there was settings to replicate the AGS-001. They’re still wonderful, mind you but I always keep my NES Classic with an original front lit screen for those games (I just wish I didn’t have to lol)
I love it, because with these old devices you could do anything by yourself, cleaning, opening ect. With new devices you must send them to some experts and pay alot of money. Its like with older cars vs. newer cars!!
That one was in pretty good condition so I didn't want to steal the screen from it. It that one was in worse shape or broken I def would have done that.
I still have a mint condition AGS-101 that I bought new (from a Gamestop that is less than a mile from here but recently closed) when it was released in 2005. Definitely one of my prized possessions, I take good care of it and keep it in a case when it's not being used. I normally just use it for 1) GB and GBC games, and 2) Anything that needs the GC GBA link cable. If I am just playing regular GBA games that don't need any sort of link cable or transfer (like Golden Sun), I usually use my DS Lite. My GBA still has its original battery and is doing fine (it still runs for a good 6 hours). That said, the battery is easy to replace if/when that ever becomes a problem. My next project is to replace the batteries on all the GB/GBC/GBA games I have that use them (8 total - I have the batteries, just have to get off my butt and solder the new batteries in when I feel like doing it). So far all the batteries are still working (though every one is at least 15 years old)...I have backed up all my saves onto my computer with a GB01 cartridge reader so there isn't a pressing need to replace them until the moment they die, but I do want to do it soon.
@TronicsFix. What's your background in electronics? I have a degree in electronics myself and I do enjoy yiur videos though I don't work with these things anymore. Not usually anyway. It seems like you simply taught yourself which components often causes trouble? Or what's your education in electronics?
I'd have liked to have seen the original shell cleaned and fixed up as best as possible. It's getting harder and harder to find old Gameboy consoles that are still in the original Nintendo shell.
This gameboy was my childhood i had from back in 2005 or 2007 i think but then i abandoned it and now today i bought one. With scratchs on the shell i am considering buying a replacement shell because i googled how to remove scratches off the shell they said sandpapering the scratches on the shell. I think it is not a good idea. i mean, it will damage the shell and destroying the color on the shell. And the toothpaste on the scratches won't work either. I might be wrong, but i don't want to take a risk for my gameboy
hey steve congrats on 600k , i’ve recently had my ps4 just stop working it was working perfectly fine yesterday night and today i tried to turn it on it and it beeped once and just wouldn’t turn on ,wondering if you know how to fix this or any tips for me
Just a note Steve, AGS-001 is a frontlit screen like the original GBA, AGS-101 have the more powerful, backlit screen and are highly collectible with the better screen.
I’m finding it difficult to find a broken/damaged console or handheld on various trading sites to work on. I have only been working on a few personal items (which I’ve done successfully mostly). TradeMe is a New Zealand trading site but not sure how to find “broken” or “damaged” items
hey tronicfix.. i got an imac desktop MC309ll/a mid year 2011 which i have tried fixing..i have changed the motherboard and i have change the power supply and when i put it on by pressing the power button it keeps beeping..no sign of it coming on.. what could possibly be the problem with it?get back at me
Soothing video, love it! But technically you don't restore nothing, don't get me wrong, replacing worn parts with new parts it's not the same like try to renew one. In the other hand, replace all parts kill the charm, I rescued some systems and games from flea markets, I cleaned or repaired all, but I conserved names or drawing on labels/ cartridges (I have a hand drawn Kirby GBC game). Subbed to your channel
Hello first thanks for the video👍, I have a gameboy like this {red color} it's working fine but my problem is the backlight is not working can you please tell me what can I do. Thanks again
Why not clean up the original case? Some abrasive cleaner, alcohol; well, I don't need to explain how to you! You could even repaint it. You don't dabble in custom designs perchance? ;)
Just watched this because I cleaned my GB Advance SP and it now does not turn on as it did before. I can't remember if the switch button was on OFF or not when I assembled it back together. If not, what are the consequences and how can I fix it? Thanks.
How do you start a console repair business I just bought the tool kit you said to but from Amazon I’m ready to Repair console but we’re do you sell your repaired consoles Tronics Fix?
Hey tronixfix. I have an Xbox one x question. Can you please tell me if the serial number on the motherboard is the same as the one they put on the Xbox itself??? I think I'm being scammed by a local repair shop and this info could help out so much. Thanks in advance.
As much as I like your regular videos, I was a bit disappointed by this. This was less of a "restoration" video and more just a case-replacement video. I was expecting something a little more like OddTinkering's restorations, where he uses as many of the original parts as possible, cleans them as best he can, and continues to use them for that product. Don't get me wrong, this is a completely fine replacement video, it's just not really a restoration video, and I'm a little sad to have been mislead, even unintentionally
Question if your able to answer. I just got an AGS-101 system and did a shell swap on it. The only problem is the ribbon cable for the screen doesn't seem to stay in the connector on the motherboard although the tabs are locked down. The system itself seemed to have been dropped many times from the wear on the original shell. I currently have it being held in place with a piece of kapton tape. Know of anyway to possibly get it to stay in without the use of the kapton tape? Hope to get a reply from you, love watching your vids just for fun
