Gamecube was a great console. Great graphics and software. The controller is very comfortable... But I agree on the perception that console looked kiddy. Also stores like target and kmart hardly stocked the games. You had to go to places like EB Games to get any decent software. To this day Nintendo still haven't put a dvd player in their console... Perhaps they are handicapping themselves again with the switch?

to me a game system should be just that a GAME system if i want to watch movies i will use a DVD player i miss the days wen games systems were just GAME system you put in the disk or cartridges and play now a days they are a media system that plays games i really miss the 90's........

Technically there is a dvd player on the Wii, you just can't access it unless you Homebrew it. I used to use my Wii to play my DVDs back in the early 2010s. I owned component cables for it, so it had a clearer picture than my PS2, and my household still didn't own a Blu-Ray player. lol

Levi Cassidy but that’s why the ps2 was so popular. It played plenty of amazing games and dvds. It also didn’t have a confusing menu.

Man I really miss the Playstation2, Xbox and GameCube Era, we had amazing games, franchises and new and fun ips, I loved that console generation.

I cried the first time I booted up tloz:ww and heard the music when starting a new game, I was the only one in my group of friends who loved the cell shaded graphics though. Great console!

The cell shaded graphics caught me off guard as well but the gameplay was like any other zelda game so it didn't bother me too much

I've owned GameCube for several years now, but still don't have any games for it. Bummer that it's more expensive to build a library for, than ps2 or xbox. Maybe I'll get active with my "retro" consoles again and get a few good exclusives for the system. Hunting for good deals is a pain.

"Today the N64 games have aged more gracefully" Whoooaah, big disagree on that one. N64 games looked poor the second the GC, Xbox, and PS2 came out. They look truly horrific nowadays. Many GC games look great and clean to this day.

I don't think he meant relative to Gamecube, Xbox, PS2 or even Dreamcast. I think he meant compared to PS1 and Saturn. In which case, I agree. At the time, I thought it had the worst graphics of the three, because there was less detail in the textures and lower draw distances with that N64 fog, but today on a modern television, that simple geometry and blurred/smooth textured look aged much better than the Saturn's overly pixelated look, or PS1's warped textures.

@@spooky_electric I thought he was comparing to the GC, but maybe I'm wrong idk I'd have to rewatch. But yeah, I think you make a fair point. Honestly I haven't played a PS1 game in forever so I'd have to see them side by side but I'll take your word for it.

They don't have great 2D pre-rendered backgrounds like the PS1 major titles. The full 3D is no longer an advantage and yes N64 hits do look like shit when comparing to games like FF8-9 or Resident Evil or Dino Crisis or anything that has a lot of pre-rendered graphics and videos.

First console I bought myself as a kid, got it new for $175 from my paper route lol. I got it because at the time Resident Evil remake and zero was exclusive and and 4 was about to come out.

I generally really love the GameCube controller. The only problem I have as an adult, which for some reason did not bother me as a kid, was that the analog stick simply did not feel good for me to play Tony Hawk games with. For some reason I just couldn't be as precise in Tony Hawk games when using the GameCube controller, compared to when I played Tony Hawk games on PS2.

This is by far my favourite console, but its such a frustrating console to love. If they had just made it a little bigger and used larger disks, we would have seen some great experiences on the gamecube.

Yeah, the hardware in it was not one to laugh at as you could see games were running far better on it than the ps2. They are a stubborn company but I guess their stubbornness paid off in the end with the switch. With them still not giving a fuck about blu rays and having no stupid multimedia features except youtube like Netflix etc.

Gamecube is great console it should've sold well because it had potential awesome graphics and the multiplats ran fantastic on there compared to the ps2 not lying gamecube hardware was much better

I got mine for $50 and it came with a controller, cables, a memory card and a badly scratched Legend of Zelda The Wind Waker but I manged to resurface the disc and it works perfectly

i don't know why people didn't like the N64 controller i loved it i never had a problem with it and play on my N64 from 1996 till 2010 and i also loved the Gamecube controller never had an issue with that either people are picky :P

I love the gamecube, its my favourite console of all time, love the purple compact nature of it. However the mini-disks where a massive fail on nintendos part. They had a console that was allot more powerful than the ps2 and close to the original xbox but due to file size limitations of the mini disk, most developers reduced texture sizes in most games and even took large chunks of games out due to size issues. It could have been even better than it was

Jeremy Robertson Except the GameCube’s hardware *was* miles better than the PS2’s, meaning games ran faster and looked much better on the Cube. Xbox was slightly more powerful but that has nothing to do with the hard drive (which allowed nothing more than storage space for game saves and music). Don’t believe me? Find a multiplatform game (Sonic Heroes is a really good example) and play the Xbox version. Then play the GameCube version (there’ll be a slight dip in performance but nothing too noticeable in most cases). Then play the PS2 version - it’ll be practically unplayable compared to what you previously had. And even if the PS2 version is playable, it won’t perform as well as as the GameCube version.

Jeremy Robertson If MGS2 were cross platform I can assure it would look better on the Xbox and would definitely run fine on the GameCube - there are many other similar games like Splinter Cell that were cross platform and even that game ran better on the GameCube. The Emotion Engine was a year old by the time the Xbox and GameCube launched and that years difference in tech really shows.

Burnout 2 looked great on the GameCube compared to the PS2. The PS2 was outdated even for 2001 - you said yourself it lacked the dedicated 3D graphics cards that allowed the GameCube and Xbox and to produce amazing visuals.

@@UltraHylia The Gamecube actually could push out polygons faster than the X-box could. But the X-box had more visual effects and more RAM to work with.

The N64 games have not aged more gracefully, most of them are a blurry mess. What has aged gracefully though, Crash Bandicoot Series, Spyro Series, Alundra, Castlevania Symphony of the Night, Crono Cross, XenoGears, Dragon Warrior7, Wipeout Series, StreetFighter Alpha series, Enihender, Bushido Blade, Suikoden series, SaGa Frontier, Tales of Destiny series. Way more titles have aged well on pSX1 than N64.

I disagree look at conkers bad fur day compared to ps1 games. Sure The N64 may have smooth but blurry looking textures. I don't understand how wobbly polygons and pixelated textures are somehow "better looking." sure there are games like Spyro that look as good as N64 titles and doesn't have pixelated textures. Looking at opening of the Corneria level in Star fox 64, the ships at the beginning still blows my mind on how good they look. Star wars battle for naboo still looks good and beyond what the PS1 can do. And no this is NOT nostalgia talking, this is coming fom someone who owned a PS2 bring up.

The powerful hardware and small disc-space aspect of the GameCube drives me nuts. It's the same with the PSP; a powerful system that is fairly close to a PS2 in the graphics department, but uses tiny discs which makes it harder to use to it's full potential. In Sony's defense though, they did at least make some movies in the UMD format, even though it seems most people didn't like them. As for why it didn't do well, I agree with what you said. Would also like to add that not having a Guitar Hero game might have been a deal breaker for some as well. We may roll our eyes at rhythm games now, but they were HUGE back then.

one thing i did not like about the PSP is because the little disk were inside those plastic cases in order to be put into the system to work they would break easily deeming them unplayable and the internet on them sucked badly otherwise the system did have good games

The Game Cube was actually more powerful than the ps2. Re4 tloztp Mario sunshine metroid prime and melee were all system pushing titles.

0:36 and all of the work that ArtX made was freaking useless because Nintendo used mini-dvd tech as their media and it could only hold 1.5GB so all the third parties eventually abandoned Nintendo Gamecube and only made PS2 and Xbox games.......... Imagine if the Gamecube had the same disc as the Wii (regular dvd tech with 4.7GB single layer and 8GBdual layer!). Even when Nintendo finally abandoned cartridges they still ended up messing up again! Still love my Gamecube and all the amazing game it got but what a missed opportunity. It was more powerful than the PS2

Not really. It only suffered when it came to FMV and occasionally audio quality. The actual in game graphics were always better than the PS2's, and often on par with the Xbox's. But the Xbox was definitely the beast of the generation. Even ignoring the FMV and audio quality, the Xbox often did 720p on multiplatform games, where the Gamecube only ever topped out at 480p. And few people got to see those 480p visuals, because the component cables were rare, so at best, you could pick up an S-Video cable, which was still a massive improvement over composite.

Still today the best looking system ever. By far the most rugged system ever. been buy selling video games for years have never came across one that wasn't working. The handle was the thing in 2000ish, everything had handles, Apple put handles on all there computers.

Too much insistence on first party development killed nintendos relevance, I don't like Mario so I'm not interested in 60% of the library, if they did it like PS then they could have had a decent chance

I take it you did not exprrience the N64 when it was in its prime, judging by your confusion on how to hold it. Yes, the three-pronged design was silly, but there was a reason (uncertainty about the viability of an analog thumbstick) and all the game manuals pointed out how to hold the controller for that game.
