I’d imagine that it’s simply because the ability to fly freely without any stamina bar or some other kind of limiting mechanic would he stupidly overpowered a game about platforming.
Yeah I was gonna say that as well. Could have been cool to have a boss fight where Mario is flying towards a ship in space and is getting shot at by bullet bills or something you had to avoid with some other things to avoid/fly around to make for a cool use of the power.
In a game about platforming with tons of levels based around one time gimmicks, I think they probably could have found a more interesting use for it like maybe a flight race with cosmic mario
You know the water level where you slide on top of a stingray ? Imagine that but instead of in water, you are flying, dodging spike walls, laser beams, flying koopas, etc, it would be really fun.
There is an item that has been banned for 20 years since it's last appearance that snaps most platforming in half. Only the scrolling levels hurt it. There never was a time limit or stamina bar. It's just basic gliding physics. Press back, then forth, then back, then forth...boom, you won. If you _didn't_ need to fly to the finish line, you can simply KABOOM all your enemies away. It's name is the Cape Feather. It made usable appearances in Mario World, Advance 2, and Advance 4. It never made another playable appearance since then.
i feel like the gravity gimmick was the reason it was never used outside of 2 areas, using a cheat code you can use the red star anywhere, and while it works fine for planets with no other planets near it, the second you try to fly to another one, the gravity pulls you towards a planet, and if you’re aiming with it, this will cause mario to be constantly spinning trying to figure out which planet he needs to land on, while it is possible to get out of this state, it’s super frustrating and difficult
The ability to fly freely breaks platformers in half unless the level is specifically designed around it. This is why all the levels in the Spyro trilogy where you could fly were speedway levels (except gnasty’s loot but that doesn’t count)
A great way to implement it would be putting it at the beggining of every galaxy after getting all its stars and unlocking the red star. That way you could explore the galaxies freely without making the game easier since the game is already complete.
Probably because Nintendo was afraid of a game-breaking bug involving it. Yoshi in SMG2 had the infinite jump glitch that obviated half the level, I think Nintendo realized there was bound to be some problem with the Red Star that would just completely eliminate the challenge.
The thing that I liked the most about the gateway galaxy wasn’t just the red star power up, but also the SUPER red star that you could collect as a reward. I wish they added these red stars in the sequel after you collect the green stars!
There are two things I look forward to with ai. 1 ai fighting each other in video games, 2 when ai creation evolves a little more to be able to give me a fun challenge in various games
2 words: Cape Feather. Nintendo learned how busted the Cape Feather was in Super Mario World. They don't want to create a power up that players can abuse to skip entire levels. Why do you think The Super Leaf can still be around? It's because while nostalgic, it's not overpowered, unlike the Cape Feather, which only had one single appearance since Mario World: Mario Maker 2.
This powerup, weirdly, is the indirect reason I discovered Minecraft. I did not have it in the observatory, but my friend did so I went to his house to play around with it. One day, he was playing Minecraft when I visited.
Would've been cool to use this power up to escape after the final boss fight, like in the cutscene, but you have to catch Peach by yourself and fly togheter
Nintendo appears to have deprecated the concept of Mario flying. Like Mario making the ✌️ sign or saying "Yahoo!", they just don't want him to do it anymore. None of the power-ups in any of the recent 2D games give him full flight abilities. The Super Leaf does in New Super Mario Bros. 2, but not in Super Mario 3D Land/World.
I wouldn’t say they hate it, because it’s not really supposed to do all that much, it’s just supposed to be a nice little reward to receive to muck around with in the hub for completing the game
I hated it too but couldn't explain why. It just felt really uncomfortable. The wing cap in 64 is very much the same: very cool, very novel, but just really not Nintendo-quality in terms of control. One of the most hated parts of Mario 64 was trying to get all the red coins in the sky mural. You'd just keep flying past them and having to do another pass.
I get the impression they want to avoid any power up except the fire flower from becoming 'iconic' and expected in every game. It might come back eventually but from this perspective it's understandable that they didn't make it in every 3D game.
"This power up is hated by Nintendo" *Omg, i wonder what power up that is.* "Its the red star" *Oh jeez, i wonder how i knew it was red star of all power ups!*
If i had to guess i’d say it’s because Nintendo prefer their games on rails, and having this power up that lets you go out of bounds is like going off said rails
It should of been used in the final mission. Could you imagine flying through that roating cylinder with bullet bills and lava coming all around you while you try to fly through it
This was basically the red cap from 64 but yeah im suprised they didnt continue it in the next games cause its a fire powerup but idk maybe just not useful as they thought it would be🤷🏾♂️
Nintendo should have made a galaxy level where you could actually use this power up. maybe a race level. all in all it feels great to fly around though 🎮🎮
This doesn't really give any insight as to why Nintendo so-called hates this power up it just says that it was used for one level and that it didn't return. It doesn't necessarily mean that it's hated it was probably just a power up that they couldn't Implement into the second game where to find any other use for it in other levels. :)
Cause the Comet of Observatory was the only hub world that needed it, it was to make getting around the hub world easy, and getting around Galaxy 2's hub world was thoroughly easy, so there was never a power up specifically for getting around the hub world easier, like what the power up here was specifically for, so there never was any appearance of this power up... Maybe in Galaxy 3 so long as the hub world is complicated... I'm writing my own scenario for Galaxy 3 is there anything you want to be in Galaxy 3?
