I don't see how there wouldn't be a Switch successor eventually. Nintendo isn't going bankrupt (far from it), neither can they really go with Switch forever. It's like the safest thing to predict, just like that there will always be a new Mario or Zelda game, Pokémon Generation in the works.
The absolute worst thing Nintendo can realistically do is prohibit backwards compatibility. Their upcoming direct would essentially be worthless and the amount of competitors they have in their hybrid console space with modern iterations and the ability to emulate the Switch would just ruin any chances for this console.
Between reports we’ve gotten and just my own guessing, I think we’ll have full backwards compatibility, and the ability to do PS5/Series X style next-gen boost patches for some games, but they’ll probably charge for each one because that’s how Nintendo tends to be dumb about this sort of stuff. We’d probably see new releases of Switch games that come with the upgrades (we did see some potential signs of Nintendo Selects coming back) and then maybe them including access to all of them with Switch Online Expansion Pack.
@@LoliconSamalik Do they own Yuzu? I thought they just DMCA’d it to oblivion. You said it like a bad Undertale meme though lol. Besides Nintendo could create a way better emulator than an outside company due to actually having the full data for the switch’s hardware and software unlike a company like Yuzu who doesn’t have the source code or blue prints.
This is what I have in mind as well. It's easy to just say "They'll do what they did with the first Switch" but it's also what makes the most sense given the current Switch's already sluggish release schedule. I don't see them carrying this pace until 2025's holiday season, we are overdue.
@@ItsMeChair1 They aren't releasing this device almost two years after they confirm it exists. Not with how it will impact current switch sales. Latest is fall 2025 but I'd put money on March.
@@swatts1987 Yeah, latest they can realistically release it without ruining switch sales is releasing it half a year after the proper announcement and the latest time for an announcement is March, but realistically they want it out under a year after the announcement for the announcement
I always find it funny for some reason how they HAVE to put "the" before and "game" after saying anything about a game like "the Tears Of The Kingdom game" It makes sense since it IS an official and business kinda thing, but it always just sounds so awkward.
The thing that most excites me about this is that it means that Switch is definitely on its last year and the last year of a Nintendo console is when Rhythm Heaven happens
I definitely think the timing of Nintendo's announcement comes down to Golden Week having just ended in Japan. Nintendo just wanted to get one more holiday season out of the system before announcing the beginning of the end for such a successful console.
I think your belief that the tweet already did damage to Nintendo’s sales is flawed. It might have some effect, but not everyone is on Twitter. There are likely plenty of potential buyers who have no idea that Nintendo mentioned the Switch 2. It isn’t like Nintendo will be advertising it until later this year.
If the switch 2 has hardware accelerated ray tracing, which is common in current NVIDIA hardware. Metroid prime 4 would be a great game to showcase that
Furukawa’s exact statement pretty much confirms the original reports of the internal delay. If you recall, most of them mentioned that March 2025 was the minimum & that Nintendo was keeping their options open for a potential further delay into the next fiscal year instead of this one. As for the Metroid discussion, the series has never been a big seller. Metroid has only ever really passed 3 million on a good day, so I can’t really see them positioning MP4 as their BotW-tier title. And regarding Splatoon, I can’t really see them doing a fourth one so soon after S3 (especially after the success of New Horizons).
@@geminisfl Zelda was at least close with over 8 million units sold for Twilight Princess. Metroid can’t even manage half that, & that’s with Japan not giving a shit about the franchise. Your best hope for MP4 is 4-6 million units sold, we aren’t getting 10+ million without divine intervention.
I would love another Dual Screen system but the only way I think the Switch 2 could pull that off(without connecting with an old Switch or a Switch 2) would for the Switch 2 to be a foldable screen device like newer phones. I'm not saying that's what I want or what will happen but I figured bringing it up in the discussion is valid.
I think that will be too expensive, there is a good reason why foldable phones are US$1000+. I think they can instead have a universal accessory slot as the selling point for the next console. You can attach a screen, a camera, a VR head-strap…Building this new all in one system that allows for continued innovation.
They didn’t actually sign a 20 year contract with Nvidia, Nvidia CEO just said that he could imagine and hope that the partnership would last maybe 20 years. So it’s def possible Nintendo could change their mind and go with Samsung for example (but most likely will stay with Nvidia going forward)
I think this would make Nintendo the only first party to stick with Nvidia more than once. XB and PS3 used Nvidia and then dropped them with XB360 and PS4.
Imagine that Metroid Prime 4 becomes the cross-gen title that shows off the upgrade of ray tracing. On standard Switch, it has pre-baked lighting and cubemap reflections, but on Switch 2 it is fully ray traced with lighting and reflections running at 60fps. Would be a pretty cool tech demo of just how much more powerful the successor is. A new Mario Kart could also be a cool way to show off ray tracing.
Bless you Steve and Brandon. It's as if you knew I needed to hear someone's thoughts on this immediately. 😂 I know it was latu but thank you both for this discussion!
Remember, the delays aren't due to problems, but rather to ensure the console's release is top-notch: 1) to make sure there are extra Switches made to avoid shortages (this means they expect high sales and are confident in the system) and 2) to ensure the 1st party games are polished. All good signs that they want to avoid a Wii U scenario and have a competent system. The Wii U delays were because Nintendo didn't know what to do.
Honestly, my personal biggest worry is probably the scalpers who'll simply buy tons of Switch 2s and rack up the prices. Hopefully, Nintendo and the various shops will come up with good ways to deal with them.
Big news (or the lack of it) during E3 season can affect stock prices. They're just covering their bases so that there's no wild fluctuation in shareprice during this time.
they’re forecasting 165m games sold in this fiscal year, they’re definitely gonna have a couple of high profile games releasing, in that case Pokemon Legends Z-A might release in january, a mainline pokemon game can meet 10% of the sales forecast in like a month lol
them saying they'll reveal it within the fiscal year gave me war flashbacks to 2016 when they said "we'll reveal the NX in 2016" and they didn't reveal it until October and it was the most agonizing thing ever. Although I'm sure it won't be as agonizing this time
The problem with a dual screen for handled is how would playing those translate to play single screen while docked.l, at that point whats the benefir. And would be an overhead in dev for both no third party would bother with handheld dual screen version.
paper mario isn't gonna sell 10m+ like several of their other franchises but id hardly say "very few ppl will rush out to buy thousand year door". When the snes remake of Super mario rpgs total sales have reached well over 3m units. I'd expect the NGC remake to do the same or better (3-5m).
Some things I think would be neat for a Nintendo Switch 2: Themes, Joy-Con Pro (basically a split Pro Controller), a second screen option, backwards compatibility with Nintendo Switch, 3DS, and DS (and if they wanna get crazy, a GBA port like to OG DS), ambient menu music like the Wii and Wii U, make the NS2 thicker to allow for a larger battery and beefier hardware, and a PROPER Virtual Console. Think about it, you can play any handheld game from GBA to Switch if you own it physically, AND they can sell old games for $5-10 a pop to the millions who would buy them. I also imagine you could probably update something like Pokemon HOME to function sort of like Pokemon Bank now that that's up on the chopping block. Make it so the NS2 version of Pokemon HOME can allow you to either transfer straight to HOME or transfer the same way Bank did if you so choose. You could even release old Pokemon games on VC so players can get the FULL Pokemon experience in one nice package.
I remember watching a video from BoTalksGames that said he felt like Switch 2 would release in Spring next year, and I feel he’ll be bang on the money. The Switch releasing in March 2017 was a smart move marketing wise in hindsight, and repeating it in theory should be a great move for it too build momentum. The real question is what will they show in the next Direct to tide us over… Edit: I’m going to guess a Zelda port (likely Wind Waker/Twilight Princess, going to throw out Link Between Worlds as well for fun) or even porting the Kirby 3DS games (get Planet Robobot to the masses!) for the final Switch 1 games
Finally came around to listen to this. And while you were talking about a wierd new feature I realized that I need the Switch 2 to be a Switch. I need to have a Handheld-Console-Hybrid. It is to much worked in in my daily life. Playing in bed and on vacation and on the TV is just so good. 😀
Ok great discussion yall but I gotta know: what is the song title for the background music used in the final half of the discussion (used at very end of the video)?? I was trying to focus at points but then I found myself vibing with the music
If there are new social features, voice chat, parties, mic etc maybe a launch title to show these off such as animal crossing after the social sucsess during covid
There still hasn’t been a price cut. I imagine a holiday price cut is coming that could keep things afloat. Maybe some bundles or small special editions
You did briefly mention this, but I want to say that I think it's pretty fair to guess that the NSO libraries may be a big part of Nintendo's focus in the December-February gap, assuming the March release date is correct. The online/digital infrastructure is basically certain to carry over, and even if the system didn't have full backward compatibility those libraries would almost have to be available on the new system. And while the Switch install base is large, the percentage of that base currently with an NSO subscription (and especially with an Expansion Pass subscription) probably isn't very high. The Expansion Pass especially has had a bit of a black eye as overpriced since it launched, and though it has gotten more stuff over time the N64 and GBA libraries are still a bit thin and missing some standout titles. On the basic plan front, the GB/C library is in similar need of bolstering, and the others could still probably benefit from a few more big titles to fill in the gaps a bit more. So it'd make sense for Nintendo to really hone in on this during the relative lull in major new releases just before the new system drops, and use the new system as an opportunity to entice new subscribers to the service, maybe bundling in a discounted subscription with the new console to sweeten the deal a bit and maybe bring in some Switch owners who are still holding off on it. I'm no expert on this stuff but it seems like a reasonable enough thing for them to try.
I think we will keep getting occasional new amiibo. Kind of like we still are. Like the Noah and Mio Amiibo. They'll probably be more limited and not really for store shelves. Kinda like they already are anyways. More for collectors
Aside from a new Mario Party, the other spinoff game that I really want is a Mario Warriors game. I still think that Koei Tecmo wants to make that game. However, at this point, I don’t think it’s going to happen until the next console comes out.
I'm still holding out hope for ports of Wind Waker and Twilight Princess HD to make it to the Switch, They'd be great games to bide time until the Switch 2 releases.
I think we are finally going to see Prime 4 this June. If it has become a cross Gen game maybe they wait till fall to show it off but I’m glad the wait is almost over
So let's see, Pokémon Legends Z-A comes out 2025, and Nintendo should be announcing NS2 either mid-late this year or early next year, so I almost wonder if Pokémon will be a big launch title for the new console or not. It's unlikely, but maybe they can pull a BOTW and put it on NS and NS2, but I doubt that.
Yup, thats the one thing riding on me being interested in it or not. I skipped switch and would be willing to get in on it if I can play that library on the new system
I assume they have some AAA games lined up for the next 12 months, but I would only be interested in buying them iff they are playable on the next system.
Great discussion! Those with ”reasonable” expectations are going to be less disappointed than those that think that Switch 2 will include absolutely everything on their wishlist. The background music was just a tad too loud. Might just be me though!
now would be a good time to release Wind Waker and Twilight Princess, it would please fans. Also if they are already done like previous rumours said then it would be minimal effort.
Personally I think Nintendo is going to save TP/WW or any 3D Zelda Remakes for the new console, as otherwise they are not going to have a 3D Zelda game on it for potentially 3-5 years (with the assumption that the console releases before the end of 2025) given previous dev time and with Totk only just releasing last year. Plus the big Zelda 40th anniversary is coming up in 2026 so I think there is a good chance they release something for that given the timing.
Great coverage! Talking about the Zelda Games, though, I have a sinking feeling that Nintendo will want to hold them for a Gamecube Online Service for the next generation, not remastered. They might be stubborn enough to try it.
I wish for a return in the spotlight of the Miis ! Bring back streetpass, the Mii channel, add the make-up feature introduced in Miitopias Remake to the regular Mii Editor ! New games set on wuhu island, make sequels/port of the Mii games (I need me a port of WiiFit) !!! That is my biggest wish for the next console ! (with a bit more customisations for the console itself)
26:03 I think BotW vs TotK shows Nintendo's difference in mindset with amiibo. BotW has a really cool and unique idea, but it's limited to one specific figure, which kinda defeats the purpose of having many amiibo. This was when Nintendo was still figuring out amiibo, trying to do ambitious things and locking content behind them to entice people. TotK instead gives only cosmetics and early access to already in-game content, something that makes use of multiple amiibo and doesn't make non-amiibo players feel left out. I think Nintendo realized that the more time they put into making unique amiibo content, the more people will get upset that the content is locked behind amiibo. To them, it's probably better to just give cosmetics or stuff that exists elsewhere in game, stuff that's easy to develop, to avoid potential backlash, at the expense of making amiibo seem cool.
Doesn’t it make more sense to have the Wind Waker/Twilight Princess ports as a launch title(s)? Then you get all the Zelda fans on board with a highly anticipated release. Pair that with 3D Mario/ Prime 4.. that’s juicy.
I can see them doing Wind Waker/Twilight Princess ports happening for this holiday if they want to tide us over till the new games carry us over to Switch 2 release
Prime 4 is likely going to be cross-gen. They want to take full advantage of the best selling system of all time and also because it was originally promised for Switch as well
@AREAlhero PS4/Xbone is the only system that had a performance refresh that was substantial. They tried to say MS/Sony are known for those type of refreshes went, they only had one. I misspoke I meant Xbox 360
Here's my unfounded speculation: They call it the Nintendo Split. The controllers are permanently attached, but the screen is actually two screens that can separate in the middle to give you local, literal split-screen play. Think two Gameboys that can snap together end to end. And the bizarre, Nintendo twist will be a plastic triangle that allows you to connect a third system in a tripod, tabletop abomination that no one will ever use.
If the Switch successor allows you to play your old Switch games with better performance (like a new phone, for example) it would be funny if the Switch 2 is called, the Nintendo Switch TOO 😂
It's all but confirmed that Metroid Prime 4 will be on the Switch successor with this announcement. Will they do a split release and have it available on the current switch and the successor? It makes me think of the wording for Pokemon Legends: Z-A "releasing simultaneously worldwide in 2025" This could simply mean it's being released in all regions in 2025 *OR* it's being released for the Switch and the Nintendo Switch successor at the same time. Looking back at the sales of games from the "decade of the switch" we're likely to see a new 3D Mario, Mario Kart, Metroid Prime 4, and a Pokemon game within the first year of the the successor's launch. It would be wild if they already had another Zelda game ready. Also, I can see Animal Crossing coming out within the first 2 years of the console's life for SURE
i’m thinking the console will launch with some new casual game like 1 2 Switch, a Zelda remake, new Mario and one new IP. that’s enough for me, honestly.
My guesses for the AAA NX Switch 2 games are: Prime 4 or 3D Donkey Kong out of the bat. A New Zelda Game might be coming out mid lifespan; enough time for the creators to breathe and create.
I think that a 3D Zelda game (~2030) would come at the tail end of its lifespan and the 3D Zelda game after that would come on 2036 (i.e. 50 year anniversary). We might see a 2D Zelda game early lifespan or even as a launch title to commemorate 40th anniversary of Zelda.
@@kairostimeYT Yes. That makes sense, considering that Miyamoto had to have blew a fuse in his brain in order to even make TotK. A 2D original or even Remake makes the most sense in the next couple of years.
If anyone expects anything beyond a 1.5x upgrade they will be severely disappointed. DLSS will essentially be the big addition to upscale the image quality...hopefully 480p and lower will be a thing of the past.
The gimmick I think the switch needs is a rock solid pointer system akin to the wii sensor bar but perhaps without the sensor bar. The switch's version has been very poor comparatively. But for me. just for me. I'd love Nintendo to invest more into VR. Whether that's a separate peripheral or whatever. Metroid Prime 4 VR would be killer for me. Not a smart business decision but I'd be in heaven.
I don't think they'll show Prime 4 at the next Direct. It must at least be cross gen at this point and why would they show off Switch footage when they could show off Switch Successor footage in 6-9 months? It would be an ideal launch window title, and to be honest, I don't even think it will be cross-gen. It's a system-seller, so it should be Switch Successor only. Nintendo's focus now is adoption of the next system, everything they're doing will be geared to slowing down Switch sales. If you buy a switch this year, you're less likely to buy the successor next year, and consoles live or die by how many people buy them. Everything at the direct will be to tide over existing Switch owners, smaller fan service games, ports, remakes and remasters. Maybe the Zelda HD games, more NSO titles for N64 (DKR or DK64?), an outside shot of a Mother 3 translation, and if we get anything "new" I think Mario Party is a good call.
