I think it's possible they can reach it, but even if they don't, I'm still blown away at the turnaround. It feels like yesterday we were skeptical if it would at least do decent or be a financial flop like what we JUST SAW with the Wii U. How we're at this point now is fascinating
@supermariof0521
@supermariof0521 Год назад
Which kinda makes me worry. Think back to the Wii. That thing was a non stop runaway success story and overflowed Nintendo's economy, which of course led to Nintendo falling off hard the second the Wii U dropped. Nintendo got lucky when the Switch launched cause it was marketed properly as the Switch ran circles around the Wii in a matter of months. If Nintendo fucks up with their next console, that could be it for them as a hardware developer. Their next console could equal Nintendo going the way of Sega and going third party if they aren't careful.
@serenity6669
@serenity6669 Год назад
@@supermariof0521 Don't worry about it. Nintendo has been successful since they entered the business. The worst that happened to them was a couple years where they lost money despite still sitting on billions in the bank. The Wii U didn't have Pokémon, Animal Crossing, an open-world Zelda (released too late to matter), or a sandbox Mario, and wasn't portable. They're never going to release a console that performs that poorly again.

@@JokerX350 if history is any guide, then as soon as the next new Nintendo drops, the old Switches will be sold off by consumers to make room. Then one way or another, it ends up in a third-world country (like my home country of Pakistan) where it is sold by a hopefully clueless vendor for a fraction of the actual price! Higher sales just makes that reality a little more possible.

I respectfully disagree. In order to get essentially 20 - 30 million extra customers, software won't make a difference. Even though I love the Metroid Prime series, MP4 is not what's going to make me want to get a Switch. After 6 years, Nintendo will have to do something that will make people want to get the console itself, and at this point, all I can think of is a substantial price cut.

I definitely don't think a new Mario Kart would push units. To most people, 8 was a new Mario Kart, and to the 11 people who bought a Wii U, you can get a used copy of 8 and all the DLC for the price of a new Mario Kart and it'll have more new content than any previous game already. Can't imagine anyone is holding out on buying a Switch but will pick it up for a new Mario Kart anymore.

The PS2 was a one-of-a-kind system in a one-of-a-kind moment. It had worldwide appeal instantly and had an unusually long life span. The sluggish early sales of the PS3 kept the support for the PS2 going longer than a last gen console would normally get. I feel like something that could really help the Switch out in the immediate future when it comes to selling units is the fact that Nintendo seems to be really going all out when it comes to capitalizing on Mario especially after the success that the Mario movie was. We got a new Mario RPG remake, we got Super Mario Bros Wonder around the corner, we got a new Peach game and a Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon remake coming out in 2024 ( assuming that all of these games will turn out well knowing Nintendo ). Nintendo has never been this crazy when it comes to Mario. I’m not saying this will get them over the top but I think it could be really significant for the Switch.

At this point, it's going to pass the PS2. Usually, when Nintendo releases a new console, the sales of the previous console drop like a rock, but the Switch is showing itself to be an exception to the norm given the fact that there are multiple six-year-old games _still_ selling well. They could capitalize on the unprecedented legs of these games by reducing the price of the Switch family when the next console releases.
@Clery75019

Unfortunately, people are going to be disappointed when Switch 2 is actually a completely different type of console b/c Nintendo never sticks with one idea for long on their main line of consoles. I don't think the successor is going to be backwards compatible cuz Nintendo likes selling the same thing multiple times. If I find out the Switch successor is backwards compatible, I'll get that. If not, I'll wait a couple years and get and maybe get an OLED, but by then my Steam Deck + emulation will prolly outweigh the advantages of buying an OLED.

I think it’s possible but it will require Nintendo to put the system our more in emerging markets. The ps2 had a pretty good market in places like Brazil and Eastern Asia countries that helped it get to the massive numbers it had. Nintendo needs to make more of an effort with that. Also probably wouldn’t hurt to ensure they still support the platform for a little while after the new system comes out, consumers get the message that Nintendo basically dropped the previous system when the new one comes out, the NES was the only real exception, that still got Nintendo published games for about 3 years or so after the snes released. Some like N64 and Wii U stopped getting supported even before the new system came out. Other than that, maybe a home system only one for a dirt cheap $150 could help them close the gap.

@Nin10Guy

I think a huge part of the reason why the PS2 did so well in the long run was because Sony marketed the PS2 as a budget friendly console that appealed to casuals with lower incomes once the PS3 came out. PS2 consoles and games were incredibly cheap during that time and games were often found in bargin bins and dolar stores. Sony even went out of their way to release a Toy Story 3 PS2 bundle in 2013 to make the console appealing to kids despite the fact the PS4 was just around the corner. Nintendo on the other hand is infamous for immediately abandoning support for their previous consoles once their new one comes out. If Nintendo actually dropped the price of their games and consoles and heavily advertised it, they would have a shot of catching up with the PS2. But unfortunately, that doesn't seem to be their goal as they want to maximize profits until their successor comes out. Nintendo expects their customers to pay a premium for their products no matter how old they are. In terms of Mario Kart 9, I think Nintendo will save that as a potential launch title for their successor as they are still releasing new seasonal expansion updates for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

While other devs usualy put the prices down of the standard edition of the game. But I guess you will ignore that.

I cannot think of something that would shift more units than MK9. Me personally I would love to see a remake of Chrono Trigger for Switch but, frankly, in 2023 even if it was a masterpiece it would not make a difference. @@robd9921 I am also noticing this tendency. Therefore probably, the best way to shift an additional 25mil units would be to release additional limited edition consoles. For the PS2 it was all about being the console with the best games on the market, at the best price.

They need to do a price drop if they try to sell 25 million more units, maybe $150 the Lite, $230 the V2 and $300 the Oled But we have to admit that in the actual world with extreme competition with cellphones and the pc gaming revival of the last years wich includes portatil pc "consoles" like the steamdeck, and coming from a failure like the Wii U is pretty impresive that the Nintendo Switch have sold 130 millions units worldwide! Yes, the PS2 sold 155 millions units, but have almost no competition, was sold as a DVD Player with games and was the succesor of an already succesful console. In any case we still have wave 6 of the dlc for MK8. 10 is a launch title or 1st year release for the Switch successor. 2) Is there a 3D Mario sequel to Odyssey in the works as the Switch Swansong? Many think its Zelda TotK. Im not so sure. This in addition to Zelda WW and Zelda TP HD pirts, Metroid Prime 2&3 HD, and Super Mario Galaxy 2 could be enough to get it past 155. 3) If it does it, it will be after the successor launches and the original gets discounts as it slowly limps past the PS2. I think if they have the Nintendo switch 2 more years, which is wholly possible, and gave it the right circumstances, like another price drop for new consoles, lots of unique skins like you mentioned, and even more system seller games it could happen. Last winter was the first time me and my girl bought a switch. We jumped in after all this time because of what you’ve always said. The system is cheapest to buy for when it’s no longer new, but before people miss it. That being said we only have the 1 and I could see myself getting a second one just so we could play games together on seperate screens with games that support that function. Mario Kart 9 might be a game that does that for us. Since the PS2 era when I was in highschool I’ve always figured why not buy last gens console. You get more game experiences for way cheaper. I did the same with the PS3, and then the WiiU and Xbox One. This time it’s the Switch.

The switch is forecasted to sell 15 million, but with tears selling as well as it did that number might rise lets say it sold 16.5 million this fiscal year putting it at 142 million. Next year, 2024, the switch sells 10 million units at 152 million. Assuming a switch successor comes out this year and doesn't immediately kill switch sales. In 2025 the switch sells 4 million, putting at 156. And the final year of the switch it sells 2 million putting it at 158.

PS2 managed to keep selling decently for a while after the PS3 released. We haven't seen that as much lately, PS3 and PS4 console sales fell off by quite a bit once they were succeeded. Maybe if they keep the Switch Lite around for a few years as a super budget option - I doubt there would be much of a market for the dockable models once the next console is out. The demographic who would be paying a little more to play on a TV is likely to just shell out for the best option and not bother with the old gen. I'm 50/50, but as you said, Nintendo doesn't seem too bothered about trying to reach the #1 place. I think there's some validity around the most recent rumour of the next console coming in the next 12-18 months though, due to it being corroborated by Tom Phillips at Eurogamer. He was the one to first break the news that the Switch was a hybrid with detachable controllers, back when people were hoping they'd just make the Nintendo PS4. There's no outlandish spec claims in there too that makes it sound like fanboy wish fulfilment, even suggesting a display downgrade from the Switch OLED. I'm not putting all of my stock in trusting that, but I remember people saying the NX rumour was complete BS, so I'll keep an open mind. If that report holds true, Nintendo has a smaller window of opportunity to sell those 25 million if they care to.

The Nintendo Switch Dock is still 79.99 in 2023. Splatoon 2 from 2017 is outdated is still 59.99. If they can stop with that pricing stinginess... mark the Switch Lite down to near $130 with a digital code for agame, the og Switch to ~$220 with a digital code for a game, and introduce a Nintendo Selects line for Switch, I think they can get there easily. I agree, I don't think they have any first party releases left that can substantially push a huge amount, much less 25 million, so I think this is the last way to make it. @austinrivers2885 Год назад
Nope -- try again. More than 1.5 billion games were sold for the PS2, more than any other console in history; the Switch to date has sold just a shade over a billion. So if so many people bought a PS2 just to play DVDs, or even as primarily a DVD player, then how did the thing end up selling so many games? Somebody was obviously using it as a video game console! Also, I hate to break this to you, but we're really comparing apples and oranges when we talk about the PS2 vs the Switch -- one a dedicated home console that yes, could also play DVDs -- and the other... Is the Switch a home console? A handheld? You can argue that it's "both," but if you do, how do you then include in the sales count console variations that AREN'T "both?" The Switch Lite is its own thing -- it's not a "Switch" at all! If it makes sense to count the Lite because it plays the same games as the Switch, then why can't Sony count PSP sales among its PS2 sales? Now the PS2 is sitting at more than 230 million -- best of luck catching up to that, Nintendo!

I think super Mario wonder could potentially also see a big boost in sales. 2d Mario games have historically sold better than 3D games and this game seems to be taking the formula in a new direction which can also help it. Bundle the game with the switch and you will get a ton of sales from that. And I own two OLEDs, one regular switch and switch lite. Two of those are for kids. One of those is for me and the other is for testing purposes. Testing games without patches

Seems like Nintendo will just keep releasing variant systems. Newly announced "mario" edition oled, it's just red with a small Mario logo on the back of the dock but people will but it. Then they'll do a green "Luigi" edition and people will but it. Metroid prime 4 would sell more systems and if they made a special edition system to go along with it

I don't think any one game released, including Mario Kart 9, pushes them over the finish line. For one, Mario Kart 9 would most likely be released as an anchor title during the first year of the next system. At this point, anyone who wanted a Switch at current pricing has one. They can get the next 25 million off the following ideas: 1) across the board price drop. $129 Lite, $199 base, $249 OLED 2) release a OLED lite model, somewhere between $147-$199 3) Get a few more themed consoles out there. Super Mario Wonder is coming, make a Lite model around that. Do a NES themed Switch, or a SNES one. Then you're tapping into the people who would buy it just for collector reasons even if they already have one.

Adam, do give the 2D DS games a chance on the hardware. Castlevania, Radiant Historia, Kirby, Contra, Thor, Mario and Luigi. They all look very screen crunched on a big tv in my opinion. Old LCDs are almost like scanlines.

The only way I am buying another switch (that isn’t a Switch 2) is if they release an OLED Switch Lite. My standard Switch never leaves the dock, so the current OLED would be totally wasted on me.

Every time people say it won't they justify it by moving the goalpost in the craziest ways. I'm shocked you didn't mention their ace in the hole - the Switch has gone the longest of literally any video game system in history (afaik) without an official price drop. A $100 price drop of each model next year would be an insane boost.

Nintendo can do it easily by releasing above average limited edition consoles. I bought excellent limited edition 3DS/2DS (XL and regular) with Zelda and Pokémon designs, and wanted to buy more. So far, Nintendo hasn’t tried hard with limited editions (their best was the Mario one).

Well here's some games that could boost the Nintendo switch up in sells, metroid prime 4 would probably do it, super mario odyssey 2, maybe a new smash brothers game, maybe a ninja gaiden and zelda crossover just might do the trick, maybe a new star fox and zaxxon crossover, and like you mentioned, a new Mario Kart game, And are they really working on metroid prime 4? Or did they just claim that so they could trick people into getting a Nintendo switch?

What about a TV only version. You can make the console dirt cheap if you remove the screen, battery and dock, just like the PlayStation TV was a screen less PS Vita. Of course you loose the hybrid appeal of the console but the Nintendo 2DS did exactly that.

The fact that both the ds, and switch have sold as well as they have, that they could be that close to matching what was essentially a DVD player that could play video games in and of itself is incredibly impressive. Yes the ps2 was going to be ridiculously successful regardless due to ps1 being the most successful console of IT'S generation, but having a dvd player right out of the box definitely pushed consumers to by a ps2 that wouldnt have otherwise bought a video game console.

I personally don't think the Switch will see an MK9. Nintendo has dug their heels pretty deep into MK8 with added tracks and characters and at the time of me writing this, they still have one last update for it to come. With that said, I think a new F-ZERO would be amazing on the console. They can still potentially release Metroid Prime 4 on it as well. I saw another commenter on here say to bring back "Nintendo Selects" or something of that sort that will put their first party titles at a discounted price, that would be great as well, along with a price decrease on the console itself (I don't see that last one happening though). I think Nintendo still has a few weapons in their arsenal to potentially beat the PS2 sales. Think of it, if they beat the PS2, it may very well never be a record that's broken again by another console other than a console of their own in the future. With SONY and XBOX slowly winding down the whole home console idea, I think only Nintendo could beat Nintendo in the future....Unless SEGA decides to maybe re-enter the game in the future? Man...the OG's battling it out with eachother again would be so amazing, lol.

I hope it does. The DS almost beat it. If they keep making them even after the new console is released and there is a big price drop like the PS2 had later in its life then it could have a chance. I wanna see that record get beaten. Especially because a lot of those PS2 sales were from people who just wanted a cheap DVD player.

I think it would be nice if it could beat the DS. It would be such a lovely fitting tribute to Mr Iwata. (I don't think they care about beating the PS2 - DvD players were all the rage back then! But man, it would be so close for anyone with ocd to be able to stop there lol.) I personally think it is going to do it. Mario movie being one of the biggest grossing films ever means a lot of kids want a Switch (and as many parents saying, wait till Christmas!) Especially with the new mario game too. And Zelda TotK will probably get a bump this holiday as well (imagine if they anounce a Zeldaa film in development or something lol.). Switch should have a stunning holiday season (especially for it's 7th year!) After that, well, depends how close it is next fiscal year. A price drop usually keeps the life cycle curve more level but I'm starting to think inflation has kinda knocked that strategy out. Can it sell 25 million units in 3 or 4 years (bearing in mind it won't just be dropped when Switch 2 releases). I reckon it can. Software sells consoles. Nintendo's profile has probably never been higher. Definately a great chance of doing it. Like I said, the Switch 2 (rumoured specs) sound expensive. If they can price cut the Switch, then they go after the demograph of those holding out waiting for it. And that's a big demograph.
@WillNovak
@WillNovak Год назад
At this point we basically know Switch has holiday 23 and Q1-Q3 2024 to sell. MarioKart9 is much more likely to be a Switch 2 launch title. It’s not likely to be some new game that propels switch past PS2, it’s price cuts. IE if the Switch Lite drops under $150, I’ll get one for my 5 year and so will a lot of people. 7 years in if you don’t have a Switch yet it’s unlikely you’re getting one, unless the price really drops.

Ultimately hardware units sold matter very little, what matters is which console had a more profitable run. I don't believe Sony made any money off PS2's sold so they made their off software. Who's raked in more profit from software sold? Taking into account, switch cartridges are more expensive than discs, profitability is what determines which was more successful.

If it does, I would say it's because the Switch has just had so many hardware revisions and now there's the handheld only Switch. I personally wouldn't be able to compare the two's sales. If you ask me PS4 had the best chance of being the console to outsell the PS2, where I would think it would be a fair comparison. It's amazing how much PS4 sales just stopped after PS5 came out.
