Thanks for coming to my shop (Beyond Retro)! Staff were super excited, and I'm only disappointed I wasn't there while you were there myself to have a chat!
I’m also Australian and he doesn’t say Australia normally - has he been in America for decades? Usually you keep your accent if you move internationally after like 8ish years old
Honestly as a Western Australian I gotta say it's cool to see our wonderful city shown off. We are so far away from the rest of Australia so it's always great to see someone talking positively about us. Hope we see you back in Peth again and check out the South Side game stores.
Glad to hear you enjoyed Perth, and super stoked you went to Beyond Retro & Retro Collect, I absolutely love browsing those stores from time to time and always find something nice there. Shame I missed you both though, would've been nice to meet up and chat for a bit
I was surprised to find that most of the games in Aus are cheaper than Canadian prices despite our dollar being slightly higher. In Canada most games are $80 + tax which (ends up being just under $90 with tax.) While in Australia most games are $60 -70 tax included.
I recently bought a Switch OLED, I’ve been game hunting too, mainly for party games with the family Ended up getting Mario Party Superstars, and MK8 Deluxe as well as a couple of others, it’s crazy how some games that have been out for over 5-7 years have kept their value and have barely dropped in price, most games are around the $65-80 mark, usually titles on the PS or XBOX drop heavily after this many years but I was surprised to see how the Switch games are still pretty much retailing at full price.
It isn't? If you do the math. $1 usd = $1.50 aud it's $60 for a modern switch game in the us while it's $80 here. $60 x 1.5 = $90, so it's $10 less in Australia
Woah as someone who lives in the Perth area it's crazy seeing places I have been to in a RU-vid video, glad you enjoyed Perth next time you come try to visit the nostalgia box it's a really cool video game museum I would highly recommend
I grew up in the 90's and my Gosh, I miss these retro aesthetics and the quality games 'Made in Japan' at 04:20 . I'd also add some Double Dragon and Metal Slug into the mix out of sheer sentiment. I was so close to visiting Japan at one point. I had experience with MoCap and in late 2015 I was in contact with Capcom about the facial likeness role of Leon for the Resident Evil 2 Remake. I failed to mention I also have a voice acting background, in the end I lost the part and I can't forgive myself for wasting such an opportunity to visit the place that inspired artists like Toriyama San. R.I.P.
Hey!! Welcome back to Australia! Just a tip, a lot of JB hi fi stores do price match which I use a lot (in Sydney anyway), but I’m glad your supporting small businesses cause they do hold a lot of hidden gems :)
From someone who lives in Adelaide It's nuts seeing my home town on beatemups RU-vid. I knew you were in Adelaide recently and I was tempted to try and meet you
These are genuinely my favorite types of videos, especially the quality you and the editor put into them :) I’m so glad you got to go back to Australia, thank you for showing us all the cool stores and the memories!!
Game Quest is how I originally found your channel, many moons ago. This just took me straight back to those days with a rush of nostalgia. Amazing video, Wood!
There's still a Games Traders store in Colonnades in Adelaide 😁. The moved from Marion to Seaford then Colonnades. Their website is still comes under Seaford
I wish I found this channel 10 years ago. I used to work in the biggest of the Adelaide Gametraders, Marion. I can confirm that a combination of online sales becoming dominant in the second hand market, the lack of profit from new games (jb sells at cost, makes competing on new prices impossible) and rent increases from the centre pretty much killed non eb stores. The store pivoted to merch and pop vinyls but even those higher margins items couldn't help us with the rent long term. The store closed in 2018/19. I left at the start of 2016, and by that stage only had a few shelves of video games left with merch being dominant. The best years for game stores were the wii, 360 and ps3 era and thing quickly went down hill after that. I had a quick look through some of the older videos to spot the store, but no luck yet. Hope to find a few shots.
To the average american probably, but I imagine to someone in austrialia he probably sounds a bit american. Listening to him and paying attention to what he's saying I do kind of here he sounds american at times.
Psst... psst... @beatemups Wood, shots with your 🎧 headphones before talking about your Raycons 🎧 and more after... maybe editor should change the shots 🤷🏻♂ It's kind of weird, specially when talking about how much you were looking to travel with your Raycons 🤭
@adventurousash don’t get me wrong, I support his adds and the creativity he puts into them. But this time looks like an editor mistake. He might have used his Raycons on the flight (specially to sleep while listening to music, since big headphones don’t allow that), I was just adding my 2 cents here to keep an eye on the storytelling.
Amazing video, I enjoyed it a lot. As a Greek I have to say that is an amazing food for us and it is in our culture but in my opinion yiros is one of the greatest food in the world
12:46 the games in the UK also have the text centered to the middle and our Pokémon games have the symbols as well so maybe America is the one that's different 😂
0:47 Monaco Grand Prix Racing Simulator on the original square playstation was my first ever game that my dad bought me that was bundled into the console way back in summer 1999. WOW the memories are flooding back, playing that single game everyday all summer.
Objection! The best and original gyros pita come from Greece. Not to mention the amazing beaches in the islands. Highly recommend you to plan a small trip there at some point
You really hit the lottery with Kim. The amount of support she gives you for your love of Nintendo and gaming related stuff is so rare these days. Really hope the two of you stay happy together for a very very long time.
Legit one of my favourite videos you have ever made, Wood. Love the style, tone, editing and background on yourself and Australia. Very enjoyable watch.
Limited run in Australia just sucks. I considered getting grounded for switch from it, but it was a total of $85 AUD and all Australian reviews of the site say can take over a year to ship
Limited run is awful enough over here in the US, I wouldn't even try internationally. You're better off looking at local online stores and seeing if they put in an order for limited runs latest releases, or buying their older releases from somewhere like ebay, which you'll still take a hit in shipping but you won't be waiting over a year for it..
Welcome home mate. I love the way you accent started to shift between the voice over to "in the street" you. Your stop at Rottnest reminded me why I need to get back to WA from the east coast.
Take this as you will Wood, but my friend was trying to find your channel and she asked me "what is that RU-vid gaming channel with the weird Australian man and his really cool gf?" lol
Gametraders are my GOAT! Still 1 in Adelaide. They recently had Pokémon Ruby, full box, manuals, E-reader cards the whole sh-bang! Thanks for shouting out Adelaide, it’s always cool when Adelaide gets some rep ❤
it is always nice for me to see someone having nostalgia for their hometown and the things they grew up with..no matter what country or city, we all have our little things we miss.
You had me at ROFL at "are we going down.." comment with your Raycons. Glad you mentioned Singapore as I'm from here. Been a subscriber since you were just starting. Gamer kid here and Switch, 3DS, GBA, Nintendo lover here etc. and I love your vlogs recently. Watched the Japan series & hubby and I are looking forward to game hunting this Oct. Always look forward to your videos Wood. :)
Definitely an awesome video. Seeing the clip with Chris definitely takes me back to the early days of your channel. Can’t wait to watch the next video of you n Kim in Australia.
Ooh nostalgia trip. From another ex Adelaidian.Shin Tokyo still acknowledges my membership from when they were a tiny little hidyhole in the train station circa 2000ish. Shout out to Will who hit me up with my insanely expensive macross toys.
I'm surprised Kena Bridge of Spirits wasn't on this list. It felt mechanically like God of War, with some Souls like mechanics, but with a bright and colourful visual style and Pixar level animation. It was incredibly polished and fun to play. It was also longer than I expected. I loved it.
I would enjoy watching a video of your uncle talking about his gaming experience back in the days... Dude, he had a seriously cool looking collection. That really was awesome!
As an Aussie content creator myself in gaming niche, found myself watching this first ever video of yours. If you ever went to an Antique Bazaar (or an equivalent) you might find some great goodies . On the food front if you went to Melbourne, hopefully you enjoy a charcoal cooked Gyro (the horizontal type not the vertical type). Will blow your tastebuds minds. And yes the coffee too!
its funny that right after the racon sponsor there is a shot of Wood with a headphone around his neck despite suggesting he didn't have one on the trip because of lack of space
The reason gamestores are closing down worldwide is not just online shopping but the sheer lack of trust people have in them.. I can't think of a single person who has never had a bad experience with these stores
I immigrated to texas 3 months ago from queensland and i didnt know the teary eyed goodbye was the last time i would see her. She pased away last week. I'm so glad you got to see yours again ❤️ i know it's hard
That K-zone magazine reminded me of looking through the gameinformer magazines that my brother would get. I loved the video, these vlog style adventures are lots of fun.
Kinda crazy watching this. As a fan, In Australia watching you back when you were a lot smaller and still in Aus hits the feels. Never thought you’d be this big or in America now. Congrats Woodman
In Puerto Rico, We had EB Games/ Electronic Boutique, Babbage's and I forget what the other one was named, but in PR they were all bought by Gamestop, so to see that there's EB Games still alive is like a blast to the past for me. Well also Gamestop also closed in 2016 and it's just mom and pop places now
As someone that works at JB, the download codes thing is usually isolated to Ubisoft titles. I don’t know why they did it but they did. Also I’m a kiwi but Aus is the same
Wood, I love these types of videos...going to other countries and checking out their gaming selections. I used to do that with DVD's when I was in Germany from 2003-2005.
Heh I find it insanely cool when I watch things set in Australia, since it so rarely happens. So I just spent about 50% of this video pointing at the screen like, 'HA! I LIVE THERE!!' I have no regrets.
1:53 - The Singapore Airport is probably the coolest one I've been to (tied with Dubai maybe) and I was super shocked to see the Nintendo stuff too! Took a pic with that Mario lmao :)
really cool seeing Shin Tokyo being shown off on this channel! I love shin tokyo, even though I rarely buy anything when I go in, it's always so fun to browse
