@@hackerman2552 this is only on a warranty which doesn’t last long and is easy to break, because you have to send it and wait for it to return, most just don’t find that convenient and buy a new one.
True but the thing is though a lot of people are say that Nintendo joycons potentiometer break more easily than normal me personally idk I don't own either device.
@@Zach.O Oh God, I need to do a "Well Actually". Sorry. It is dust, but not in the way you might think. Because of the way the joysticks are affixed, there is a lot of plastic rubbing against plastic. This friction causes plastic dust particles to fall down into the potentiometers which interferes with their function. So, it is dust. It's just not dust that's a result of mishandling.
I totally agree. Everyone who’s complaining about joy con drift are the people who literally abuse their controls. For example, playing competitive Super Smash Bros or Splatoon 3, and not being careful can damage the controls over time. It’ll still work if your gentle. I’m glad that I’m not the only one. I just hate that the Lite gets so much bad rap. If you take care of the console, it’ll last…
I've had drift from time to time, but when that occurs I pull out some WD-40 Electric Contact Cleaner, spray a small amount on the joysticks, and rotate in circles ~10x each. Use a toothbrush if need to get even deeper. I've also used 91% isopropyl alcohol in the past, but I recommend the WD-40 Contact Cleaner more because it is more lubricated vs isopropyl that can dry out some joysticks (I'm talking about you, Gamesir X2 Bluetooth). I think a large amount of users with joycon drift just have dirt/dust in their joycon and can fix them if they are cleaned properly. I would always try this before shelling out more $$$.
@@adrainwright1778 There are issues with the joystick drift though. I had a cousin with a switch and she would get HORRID drifting on her right stick. She only played games like pokemon and Minecraft though. So while you may have had a good experience, many people did not despite being careful.
It's supposed to protect the joysticks from catching drift.. or at least lengthening the life of them by protecting the joysticks from dust, and also preventing the joysticks from moving if you put it in somewhere like a bag
I stopped a ps3 analog drift with a ton of alcohol spraying, vacuum or blowing like a cartridge. Maybe it will work with switch too though I lucked out.
It’s funny though that these don’t even work that well, if you look at the actual reason behind joycon drift you’ll see it’s a bigger issue than dust and debris getting in there, the only thing that is kind of a preventative measure is them locking the joysticks in place since that kinda prevents it but if you’re using them regularly it’s just a waste of money
Yea idk I think it just comes down to how you play and how take care of them. Granted there is a definite issue with the joy stick technology. The metal contacts inside that interpret movement in the X and Y direction wear off from friction over time. Eventually leading to inaccurate movements and the drift people experience. With how people take care of controllers: I’ve seen my buddies old nunchucks from his Wii and Xbox controllers through the years, where the sticks are all messed up. I still can’t figure out how he even destroyed the rubber on them. It’s as if be bit chunks out of them lol. On the other hand my controllers have minor wear and still work great. (Same with my joycons. No drift at all since 2019) I used the original Xbox One controller until recently cause the left stick developed drift (think this was from all the first person shooters I played back then. Mashing down the left stick for sprint). Still use it on my Xbox from 2017 but I felt like I wanted an upgrade while on PC. The drift was seriously messing me up in Rocket League. Sorry for the essay lol
I think it depends on the quality of product. Cause I’m a one controller buying kind of guy. And I don’t have friends or family to play with. Maybe my gf on the occasion. But no real need. So I do EVERYTHING to keep my controller from falling apart. We’ll long story, short. My DualShock 4 controllers got drift issues twice. Two separate controllers. And my OG blue joy cons eventually started to drift. And I don’t even touch mine after eating. Nothing crazy like that. So I think my D4 controllers were just manufactured wrong, and my blue joy-cons got dust in them? Idk. These things just happened one day.
I never had problems with any analog sticks in any of the controllers i ever had since the ps1. But what i did notice when i’m playing with friends is that some of them are less careful with controllers, they use way too much force when moving analog sticks, i could even hear the sticks hitting the “walls” around them. I think how intense you are when you are playing games play a huge factor in how long the controllers last
you either played very little over those 3 years or play games that mainly use the D-Pad. The joycons are criminally low quality and the internal design of the joystick and shoulder buttons should never have passed the drawing board.
@@kittenzrulz2314 the switch isn’t trying to be a portable pc. The switch was trying to bridge the gap between playing their games home or on the go. If Nintendo WANTED the switch to be more powerful, they could’ve used beefier parts
It is 349, switch is 400, steam deck can play switch games with a simple mod, and it will play those games with triple the FPS. The switch is obsolete.
@@sp1ky58 No… the switch at its lowest is $200 and even if that’s true, who actually cares? People who have steam decks probably already have PCs. Although steam decks are handhelds, they’re not a competitor to them, they moreso are competing with with PCs and the other handheld PCs. No one is getting the switch for the graphics, they’re getting them for the games and when you take that out and make a handheld that’s a partner of PCs, that’s almost entirely what they’re competing with since the switch isn’t trying to be what the ROG ally or steam deck is(at least not rn)
My wife bought me the new switch with the glass and oled panel for my birthday, after about 50 hours of use I could feel the joycons sticking... I'm a grown man and I game like an old man, I was so gentle, to see the joycons wearing out after minimal use saddens my soul lol.
People saying getting a steam deck is a solution are dumb. Not only is it expensive, but the sticks probably can drift as well, and you'd have to emulate the switch games (the last time I saw anyone try to emulate switch games, it didn't work properly)

Just get joy-cons like the Hori split pads. Way less expensive, feel much better, and don't have drift. But only get them if you're willing to sacrifice things like rumble and no custom button mappings.
Man I remember back then seeing you two in those Nintendo videos, and the New York Switch release too of course! Great times! I actually went up back then and met CND since I had been his fan for way before that era of his channel haha, really since he first started it! Anyways, the Switch means so much to me! Even though it came out while I'm in my twenties, it really brought me back to my childhood, and reinstated my love for video games! Sure I absolutely loved the Wii U and played so many games on it, but I was tired of games coming out for Xbox, PlayStation, and even the PC. I've since went back and played a lot of the good games that came out for the PS4 and Xbox One which I skipped at the time, but man the Switch was just so awesome when it came out, and still is! To think like 6~ years later and I'm still so excited for so many games coming out: LoZ Tears of the Kingdom, Metroid Prime 4, Pikmin 4, and more! It really makes it feel like the first year of Switch all over again! 😁 Thank you guys for making such a great retrospective video!
Not true at all. Steam will replace it during their warranty period, and I'd go as far as to say that they probably would even after the warranty as Steam support is known for having awesome customer service. Worst case scenario it should be pretty cheap if you needed to pay for it. Nobody in their right mind is going to pay for a whole new Steam Deck over joystick drift.
That's only for North America (as far as I can tell, certainly not where I live). Valve has been very generous in replacing Steam Decks if something does go wrong (even if it's not covered by warrenty). Also the Steam Deck is very user repairable, can't say the same for the Switch
On Switch, you plug in the game, turn it on, and start playing games flawlessly. On steam deck, you have to configure EmuDeck, hack your switch and dump several specific files (or pirate them online), dump / pirate the games, update files, and DLC, add them to the specific folder(s), then make sure they're added to Steam so you don't have to go to desktop mode to play them, THEN you can open them and spend an hour getting the controls configured *just* right, all to play the same games with no online, no local wireless, local multiplayer that's a hassle to set up, intermittent stutters and occasional crashes, all in a bigger, heavier, hotter package with a third of the battery life. I love just taking my Steam Deck places for all my games instead of a cavalcade of devices, but how many people out there do you think are willing to go through all that *just* for Switch games?
Yep! Also because I play Splatoon online and would rather play on official NSO where there are more players to compete against. Plus, a lot of the games I would play on a Steam Deck if I had one had already been ported to the Switch anyway.
The lack of knowledge in this entire comment section is incredible I just used the Yuzu AppImage and added it to Steam, 'pirated' my games, controller worked by just using the default binds, and I can play all of it online without paying for Switch online and I have access to my save files. I can actually have multiple AC islands, thanks for nothing Nintendo. Do you get constant stutters and crashes? No. Games that are verified to work, work. Do you get less battery life? Sure. Is that worth it? Heck yeah! But you do you.
@@Thornskade You didn't have to get firmware or keys? You haven't experienced stutters from complag? And what universe are you in that online works? I've heard of third party services but those never have enough concurrent users to fill a Splatoon lobby, at least in my region. I'm not saying it's bad at all, once you get shaders cached games that happen to work usually run fine with occasional drops in my experience. But for 99% of people it's far too much of a hassle compared to the cheaper option- that is, for the use case of *just* switch games.
@@BlueMoon1890 I didn't say I didn't have to get keys, that's part of the 'pirate' thing, but no firmware though. And I live in the European universe where there's tons of lobbies for Mario Kart and Animal Crossing within Yuzu and Ryujinx. The updates to async shaders have pretty much eradicated compilation lags If you don't have a Switch or Steam Deck it's hard to argue that the Switch is cheaper because it's so much more expensive in terms of software. The same game on Switch is usually more expensive than on PC and online doesn't cost money either Ultimately it's your decision what you do, I just don't want it to be based on bad information which this comment section is full off. I also never consider the people who 'want to play Switch-exclusive games and nothing else' the default, because that's a tiny niche and not regular people. Most people play a lot third-parties and indies and would likely be better off with the Deck

The PlayStation 2’s controllers were able to re-center themselves after you moved them around a bit. Sony solved this problem more than 20 years ago. To elaborate; I saw someone testing this on their computer too, like the stick’s input was showing slightly up on whatever program he used, and then he moved the sticks and they were re-centered.
They've existed for years, they were likely just too expensive/too much hastle to produce that's why most controllers don't use them. Besides, companies don't really care if their controllers last ages it's just more money to them if they don't
@@Thornskade I haven’t gotten stick drift on my joycons since I sent them in for repair the first time, and I also got the OLED and those controllers haven’t gotten drift at all

The good thing about the Joycons jousticks is than the piece isn't soldered to the board, so it's easy and safe replace it, and the calibration option makes all the replacement 100% functional. But the Steam deck, and every other controller on the marked have their joysticks soldered. So not only you need tools commonly you don't have (soldering iron and heat gun), but every time you make that repair you have the little chance on damaging the MB.
Thats absolutely not true at all. Steam deck sticks comes in a module isolated from the main board, and they are easier to replace. Ifixit sells original pieces. You just need a single screwdriver
Telling someone to replace a nintendo product with a PC is like saying get rid of your ps5 and get a xbox. My joycons 5 years later still work fine.. I think some people are getting unlucky or there extremely heavy handed.
What, the Steam Deck one? Works great, actually. Your thumbs work in an arc so with the grip on hand it actually reminds me of the DualShock 4 a lot. And while they look weird, the haptic pads are great replacements for a mouse if you're just doing precise aim or website navigation.
I get just about the same amount of time as my kid gets on the switch if I play less intense games. Atleast the deck gives me a choice if I want my games to look good or not. 3rd party games on the switch look and run like dogshit.
@@TheTez1990 yeah, but who is playing less intense games on a steam deck. I don't think anyone is going to pay $400 just to play the same games they can play on a standard pc.

I honestly don’t care about the steam deck. I don’t mind 30 fps 720p, as long as it’s a fun game. And plus, you can detach the joycons if you have a friend over and you have 5-10 minutes to kill.
