Too funny! I read a humorous book about serving in the IDF, and there was a glossary of dirty sayings in Hebrew. So I am reading the terms out loud to my nephew, who is Israeli, and my niece, an American who made aliya. I said in Hebrew, “She is the mattress of the base.” My niece didn’t understand, my nephew actually fell off the sofa from laughter!
B"H, Its true, the guys who were in "Unit 805" talk about "I can't say" "Unit 805" is : Arrive by 8am do 0 zero and leave for home at 5pm" I was in Golani unit 51 and could talk for days.We were already 2 years in the army when we went into Syria and captured the Chermon Mountain. Unit 51 of Golani, later doing yet another 36 months 61 days a year in Miluim in Lebanon war 1982,much easier, often in Gaza, had been in 1972 on the north of the Suez canal in fort "Mexico Alef". Today there are 9 million Israelis and the same ammount of combat units in our time the same units same size but then we were only 2.5 million so truthfully,most Israelis who served from 1948 until 1975 were quite often in combat units. The boys from a very poor economic background di have jobs such as cooks or drivers of trucks or even combat drivers but did one week and went home for a week to work on their low paying job to support their poor family. Even your barber did it one week army-one week home,working at his civilian job. The poor were so very destitute then,but so were most of us! My 72 months in the israeli army were something that Yidden could not do for 2000 years and we merited to do that in combat units. It is quite humbling 12 of our 75 man unit were killed in 1973.

That is 100% true, but even so, there are the פרייר suckers like me who were for 36 months 1971-1974 and 2 months full each year until 1990 which makes total 72 months. And I CAN talk about it,but being a Chosid Chabad few care to hear! Nebbich
Every Israeli guy I meet tells me either " Mosad", "Paratrooper" or " Spesel forces" or " I tell you I kill you"(yeah right, you tell me you will kill me because I will die laughing). No one ever did a boring job like a cook or mechanic. It's all ego and pride, no humility.
