@@miikkalehtonen3389 … I just appreciated his restraint here. To me, from a technical standpoint, it looks rather difficult to play that “low” but also make it sound amazing at the same time. I’ve just always thought about Dave’s style of playing ever since I watched this in 1993 on MTV for some reason?!?!
22 hrs ago. Was it really? Just finished Dave’s autobiography. A brilliant read. He keeps talking about Kurt to a minimum I think. A one of a kind human being
He had the perfect blend: musical genius, androgynous beauty, masculine charm and strength, feminine delicacy and the sensitivity of a poet...too much sensitivity to be happy. R.I.P., Kurt. Ciao.
He really seemed like the coolest guy and his music doesn’t feel old. I’m just discovering him now and I wish he’s still alive! However, he did have lots of physical and mental health issues that tormented him daily. Being a drug addict doesn’t help… I heard somewhere that he wasn’t feeling well the day of this performance and threw up right before performing. It’s incredible that he can still sing like that when he’s not feeling well!
[Verse 1] I need an easy friend I do, with an ear to lend I do think you fit this shoe I do, but you have a clue [Chorus] I'll take advantage while You hang me out to dry But I can't see you every night Free (I do) [Verse 2] I'm standing in your line I do hope you have the time I do pick a number too I do keep a date with you [Chorus] I'll take advantage while You hang me out to dry But I can't see you every night Free [Guitar Solo] [Verse 3] I need an easy friend I do, with an ear to lend I do think you fit this shoe I do, but you have a clue [Chorus] I'll take advantage while You hang me out to dry But I can't see you every night No, I can't see you every night Free [Outro] I do I do I do I do
Dave trying not to absolutely smash the shit out of that kit is the funniest thing on MTV unplugged. He really wants to just explode but said fuck it i am wearing this turtle neck and playing with a brush.
I can totally see someone saying, "Um...Dave, you play great, but it's a little loud. Maybe you want these brushes? Really, try them out. In fact, we'll just take away your sticks."
So much respect for the tastefulness Dave had on drums for this set. I know he's using brushes but a lot of drummers just wanna pound. Definitely one of the best to ever do it.
Most Nirvana fans knew it was a special performance once it aired. We just had no idea how iconic it would become in representing the music of a decade. The last notes of "Where Did You Sleep..." still send chills up my back every time I hear it.
The greatest unplugged performance ever. No one’s ever been able to top this one. There’s been close ones but none who match it. Decades later and people still discover this performance, listen to it, come back to it. It will forever be cemented as the best MTV unplugged performance ever.
I think I prefer Alice In Chains performance, in retrospect both have a very haunting feeling because of each of the frontman’s deaths. Both men seem like their playing at their own funeral.
Of all of the songs Nirvana has performed, my favorites are the acoustic performances. I am so glad that there is an unplugged. It is great to see a non wild performance with Dave playing a soft drum. Just to hear Kurt's mild voice is amazing. I love this live performance.
Haven't Kurt started out with an acoustic guitar? He's a good player actually, not much unwanted sounds coming out, very straight forward punk sound and emotional lyricism Heard that the moment i first listened to Nirvana, on my sis' burned disc in a car, with "best of" Also agree that the drum sticks add a ton to the show's character
Sad fact, Kurt was planning on pursuing a more acoustic record after In Utero. That's the reason why he was exploring and mucking around with these more folk sounding performances
Me too. I never liked Nirvana and their vibe was too aggressive for me, so I was SHOCKED(!!!) to see this show and enjoy it so much. He's cute but the music stripped back is so palatable and his voice and guitar unique.
@@muntmunt3155 That's too bad he decided to commit suicide... but one consolation is even in death he was thoughtful. He wiped the prints from the gun after he shot himself. Look at the facts. 3x the lethal amount of heroin. He didn't die or pass out. He wrote "suicide note" then he had enough function to point a shot gun at his head. I still haven't figured out how he would have reached the trigger, but after all that, he wiped the prints. Clearly a suicide and not a murder.
The influence of Blues in Nirvana's music mixed with pop made them the greatest band ever, it's like having John Lee Hookers and the Beatles creating together.
@@chriscuomo9334I agree. Nirvana literally means to be in between happy and sad. Almost like you don’t know what to feel. Kurt died without knowing how big his impact would truly be.
I wasn't born when Nirvana was around, but their music and lyrics inspired me. it was very fortunate for the people present that night to witness them. I summarize the song in this video "Come as you are" "Jesus Don't Want Me For a Sunbeam" "Pennyroyal Tea" "Dumb" "Polly" "On a Plain" "Something In The Way" "Sweet Home Alabama" "Plateau" "Oh Me" "Lake of Fire" "Where Did You Sleep Last Night" "Come As You Are" "The Man Who Sold The World"
schmittza yeah man. All three of my girls, 9, 5 and 2 1/2 love nirvana. The 9 yo that got this DVD has been a fan for a year or two now. She loves this show and In Utero. He jaw dropped when she heard Polly on Incesticide. She’s a big fan and it makes me proud. She wants to learn guitar too and picked the mustang. I let her pick a guitar for me I’ve the summer and told her on her birthday that once she learns her first nirvana song all the way through she can have that guitar I let her pick for me. I just love that she loves them like I do and I’m more excited that new generations are finding this music exciting and relevant like I did when it was coming out.
Over 25 years later and I still have yet to see a video of Pat playing and he doesn't have a smile on his face. You can tell he's always so happy and grateful to be playing music. 🤘🤘
its amazing how even after so many years, people stilll love kurt and nirvana. We all come back to their music when in need......kurt is forever immortal in time, and his image will forever be that of a 27yr old rock icon, who died at his peak...hes frozen in time❤️
This album changed my life. I was 11. Had never heard anything like it. So powerful. To this day it's still my safe space and my safe zone. When I need to reset from life or whatever; I just play this and everything else fades and goes away and makes for a fresher more exciting start to everything. I've also used it throughout my life to decorate special capsules of time like dinners, dates and special encounters with women, party music, meditation sessions and most importantly: solitary and safe moon nights. Most recently, when my grandfather died a year ago, I was with him the moment he passed. He had confided in me a year previous to that during a Christmas gathering, that he knew he was going to die soon. And sure enough, it happened right before my eyes, 11 or so months later. The doctors told us that there was nothing left for us to do but wait for it to happen. Had never actually seen a person die before. But it was only at that moment when I realized that. After it was all over and done, I came back to this album. I layed awake at night in the dark with my headphones on. Replaying "On a Plain" and "Dumb" over and over. It sure gave me some peace. There was some sadness that I felt, but more than anything: it was a sense of finality and relief. It still gets me going after all these years. I've done a lot of stuff to this album. But I just have never lost touch with it. There was a time (many years ago) when I stopped listening to Nirvana. But I just could never completely sever ties with this record. I ultimately just came back with my tail between my legs and just embraced Nirvana as hard as I could from that moment on. To the point where they've almost given me part of my identity. I'm sure I'll be listening to "Unplugged" when I'm 90 on vinyl and still dig the hell out of it.

My story is similar. My family has also used this album to decorate time and spaces in our lives. Certain memorials, weddings, festivities, rainy days, births, deaths, all of it. If I need that reset, that reminder of my roots and to point myself back in some sort of direction, this is what I put on.❤
About to have my yearly ritual of watching this unplugged followed by alice in chains unplugged. Rip to two legends Kurt and Layne. Gone but not forgotten
Unfortunately the band was taking a break. Kurt's addiction to Heroine left him destructive and out of control. The videos he and Courtney Love are painful to watch.
In my opinion this has to be one of the best live performances that has ever been recorded. Pure perfection from start to finish. You can hear the pain in his voice and looking back knowing what happened to him it probably was pain. "Where did you sleep last night" and "The man who sold the world" are the only songs that have ever brought me to tears. And not cuz it speaks to a part of me or my life. It's purely his performance that hits me. This audience had no clue what they were witnessing at the time.
i feel sad sometimes because i'll never get to go to a show like this, it's a shame kurt is gone. but i'm still glad these songs exist everywhere today to be heard, nirvana is an experience that has that go through the lives of many people in the world yet.

Best Unplugged ever!...and the only real unplugged from MTV, they didn't practice anything, they just sat and played, a true acoustic ... true geniuses !!, since its premiere, I have never stopped listening to this concert, a true masterpiece! ... Nirvana4Ever !! ..
They rehearsed for this a lot. According to the people involved, it was a mess and didn’t really come together until an extended rehearsal the night before
@@seamusmcsorley7638& all in this post: MTV would *never* post this video/concert without multiple rehearsals just for performance 'perfection' and album sales (and even using MTV's name alone signifies a shit ton of work on behalf of the band just to be able to say 'MTV'") ... that being said, there is no reason to call people names for not knowing protocol... Do we need ad hominem attacks to disagree? And before folks try to "denounce" my thoughts, I actually SAW THEM LIVE and not just on a youtube.
Not true they performed in Italy and recorded You Know You're Right very shortly before his death. He was depressed and a drug addicted mess in a toxic marriage with a nutter
Yeah, but I can see why he said that Kurt probably would lost his voice, after some time (or maybe just his raspy voice), bc his raspy voice wasn't really healthy
I imagine you are an ignorant in the singing subject. The " rasp " in his voice obviously wasn't natural, it's called vocal drive, do some research. Joe Cocker's rasp was natural, many others, but Kurt did forced some to fit the style or whatever he meant to by that
This is the best unplugged of all imo. Kurt playing and singing live is so refreshing compared to most artists who can't play any instruments, let alone even sing without auto tune.
@@LauraLush0 for me Alice in Chains was the best unplugged performance. No ego involve, just pure band effort. Totally great effort by Layne staley, he is almost as dead as he could be on that point and yet he showed his vocal supremacy out of all supposedly "grunge" bands. Even kurt said that he wished he could sing like Layne.
@@godofredo0409 I thought Jerry did really good, too. I still think it's so weird that Kurt & Layne died on the same date (different years). Nirvana Unplugged was only a few months before Kurt passed.
I watched this on the floor of my living room as a tween, curled up in blankets...My step dad is shaking his head "The righteous bros" now that's music kid!! Ok... sure now leave me alone... 😂
I've been listening to Nirvana since I was a young girl. I grew up to be 29 yo in August now. And I will keep growing old and he'll be forever young. What a strange feeling, emotional yet hard to describe. Feeling nostalgic...
I liked rock & roll in the 60's then my daughter was a singer and guitarist in the 90's. I got to live it all over again. Nirvana is my favorite 90's. That's why at 73 I'm here listening
I've seen this a lot of times and always say that those lucky enough to be in this audience for this unplugged will know that they witnessed something special. Nearly 28 years since his passing - wow. Still listening to such a talented artist now and forever.
I imported this CD had the vhs recording when they performed on MTV whooohooo, but fuck me running once I played the CD the neighbours and my parents were complaining about the noise, shit I told them should I play more Eric Donaldson, and I had my way. Awesome music!
About a girl had always been a favorite when I got into nirvana about a year ago, this is why unplugged was great, not because of the songs themselves but because of the songs transformed into a different style that sounded amazing
Riley Talerico-Dovel wow ! A year ago ! I was just telling my boyfriend how I remember pulling up to my job in Westerville Ohio , hearing on the radio that a body was found in the greenhouse of Courtney love and Kurt Cobain’s I thought it was just a friend of theirs only to find out it was Kurt I remember back then we wore me and my girls when we went out plaid, cotton button up shirts whatever they called those ( like my gramps lol ) anyway that was a sad time it was a loss way too soon 🥺🥺🥺😐 I was angered.. sad .. mad ... his troubles I Nope to never realize he had pain for sure 😭
I've read multiple times from multiple sources that Kurt was in withdrawal during this because he couldn't cop any dope being from outta state, he was admittedly scared of failing that night,, so he got through it taking Xanax... I mean you can definitely tell he isn't on heroin too, he's totally alert, not nodding out or slurring his speech, and the dead give away...One of his BEST performances of his life. Ever. I met someone a long time ago that was there in like the 3rd row and all he could really say was that people were just stunned in awe of the show and at the very least, knew they attendees to the best & most Iconic MTV Unplugged ever recorded...
He was a hopeless addict......you missed the mannerisms and tells that he clearly had dope for this gig.....if he was strung out this masterpiece would never have happened
@@spike7038 I disagree...he absolutely could've made it through this set on Xanax. I'm sure he hadn't been withdrawing for days prior to this set if it is true. He said he was really excited to to this acoustic set and truly cared how it was received turned out. I don't think he would've called it off except for a legitimate ass reason. However, I suppose we'll never actually know the truth. Just be glad it was made and recorded, I sure as fuck am..
Spike 70 you're 100% correct. Xanax would not help with heroin withdrawal. Anyone suffering from heroin withdrawal would not be able to function, as they would be vomiting cold-sweating, weak and nauseous, in such severe unbearable pain. Totally agree with you Spike 70.
I was 22 when Kurt died & I cried as if I had just lost my own mother. Thank Good she's still around I wish he was too. I can only imagine how much more music he would've created. He is truly missed.
