Today we're finally hitting the last band in the Big 4 of grunge, and ranking the three studio albums of Nirvana.
****
Nirvana was an American rock band formed in Aberdeen, Washington, in 1987. Founded by lead singer and guitarist Kurt Cobain and bassist Krist Novoselic, the band went through a succession of drummers, most notably Chad Channing, before recruiting Dave Grohl in 1990. Nirvana's success popularized alternative rock, and they were often referenced as the figurehead band of Generation X. Their music maintains a popular following and continues to influence modern rock culture.
In the late 1980s, Nirvana established itself as part of the Seattle grunge scene, releasing its first album, Bleach, for the independent record label Sub Pop in 1989. They developed a sound that relied on dynamic contrasts, often between quiet verses and loud, heavy choruses. After signing to major label DGC Records in 1991, Nirvana found unexpected mainstream success with "Smells Like Teen Spirit", the first single from their landmark second album Nevermind (1991). A cultural phenomenon of the 1990s, Nevermind was certified Diamond by the RIAA and is credited for ending the dominance of hair metal.
Characterized by their punk aesthetic, Nirvana's fusion of pop melodies with noise, combined with their themes of abjection and social alienation, brought them global popularity. Following extensive tours and the 1992 compilation album Incesticide and EP Hormoaning, the band released their highly anticipated third studio album, In Utero (1993). The album topped both the US and UK album charts, and was acclaimed by critics. Nirvana disbanded following Cobain's suicide in April 1994. Various posthumous releases have been overseen by Novoselic, Grohl, and Cobain's widow Courtney Love. The posthumous live album MTV Unplugged in New York (1994) won Best Alternative Music Performance at the 1996 Grammy Awards.
Nirvana is one of the best-selling bands of all time, having sold more than 75 million records worldwide. During their three years as a mainstream act, Nirvana received an American Music Award, Brit Award and Grammy Award, as well as seven MTV Video Music Awards and two NME Awards. They achieved five number-one hits on the Billboard Alternative Songs chart and four number-one albums on the Billboard 200. In 2004, Rolling Stone named Nirvana among the 100 greatest artists of all time. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in their first year of eligibility in 2014.

My theory is that if Nevermind came out when you were in high school or middle school, you're gonna like Nirvana a lot more than someone who discovered them years later. They are one of those bands that you need to have the nostalgia for to fully appreciate since they captured the youthful angst of the time so perfectly.

1. Nevermind (1991) 5/5 2. In Utero (1993) 4.5/5 3. Bleach (1989) 4/5 Growing up in the suburbs of Seattle in the 1980s, if you'd told us a band from Aberdeen, Washington (a tiny podunk logging town on the Pacific coast), would become the biggest band in the world, we'd have looked at you like you had 3 heads. Such a thing was inconceivable to us. Yet, here we are. I still remember where I was and what I was doing the first time I heard Nevermind- and I still think it's the best album of the 1990s. Wickedly melodic, it breathes fire from beginning to end. At the time, I actually wasn't a big fan of Nirvana's debut LP, Bleach. I probably would've rated it 3 or 3.5 stars back then. But it's grown on me and nowadays I think the album reaches 4 stars even though Side 2 is clearly weaker than Side 1. Their final album, In Utero, contains a smattering of Kurt Cobain's best writing. I just wish I liked the first 4 songs more than I actually do (which is why that album doesn't quite reach 5 stars for me.) Nirvana is one of those "bee sting" bands that might sneak into my all-time top 100, mostly on the strength of Cobain's gift for melody- but also because the impact they had, popularizing punk culture worldwide and putting the hair-metal era out of its misery. TOP 10 SONGS: 1. Breed 2. Drain You 3. Sappy 4. Aneurysm 5. In Bloom 6. Floyd The Barber 7. Dive 8. Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge On Seattle 9. On A Plain 10. Lithium HMs: Lounge Act, Pennyroyal Tea, Radio Friendly Unit Shifter, Something In The Way, All Apologies, Dumb, Been A Son, Come As You Are, Smells Like Teen Spirit, School, About A Girl, You Know You're Right, Sliver, Very Ape, Blew, Mr. Moustache, Polly, Mrs. Butterworth, Paper Cuts, Blandest, Pen Cap Chew, Sifting, Do Re Mi, If You Must MY RATING SYSTEM: 5.0 = major classic (consistently great *and* stratospheric highs) 4.5 = minor classic (consistently great *or* stratospheric highs, but not both) 4.0 = great (more than 50% is worth revisiting and it's an essential record for this artist/style - passes my "it'll make a fan out of someone who's new to this artist" test) 3.5 = seriously good (more than 50% is worth revisiting) 3.0 = nominally good (less than 50% is worth revisiting) 2.5 = decent (competent but uninspired - not worth revisiting) 2.0 = poor (difficult listen) 1.5 = awful (can't finish it) 1.0 = historically awful (musical apocalypse) *Note: "Consistently" does not mean "flawlessly." I allow for a few clunkers if the rest of the songs are good enough. Also, I don't go below 1 star because once I'm in the realm of the truly terrible I don't care to differentiate anymore.

@Twotontessie

Yes. That they put a fork in the fake big hair nonsense that the industry was so attached to -- that was their biggest gift to the world. Metallica and others got it going but these guys finished that off. Without that context - their stuff has not held up for me all that well. But they’re ten times the band Pearl Jam was or is. For that period I thought Alice In Chains was by far the most gifted and appealing band - for me - the one that squandered the most. Not Cobain. I’m sad to say it but I don’t think he had all that much to say or offer going forward.

My favorite Nirvana record is In Utero. The way it goes from so animalistic and abrasive to moments of clarity when the dissonance clears and the melodic shines through is amazing. Furthermore my favorite Nirvana song is All Apologies. Kurt's vocals are so raw, gravely, and real. The harmonies on "all alone is all we are" is spine chilling.

I'm a shameless Nirvana fanboy and apologist since I literally came online because of them. I was right into music (mostly rap/r&b) but up to my 14th birthday in 1995 I never thought I'd ever be a musician. When I heard Breed and Lithium for the first time I immediately knew that's all I would ever be. My dad bought me a guitar that weekend (a Samick prototype ES335 copy hollow body) and it's still my best guitar - I did a gig with it last week. I stopped listening to rap and shit and never looked back. Nirvana are still in my top 5 all time acts along with the Beatles, Led Zep, Bob Dylan and Radiohead. I'm still obsessed with my inability to write something like Lithium. Their melodies and harmonic structures are incredible. He was able to marry a simple riff with a simple melody that were in different keys and shouldn't have worked together, but the effect was insanely singable. He could also make chromatic melodies extremely tuneful somehow. Lithium changes key several times in the main verse part. It drives me nuts. I highly recommend studying that, Drain You, On a Plain and Sappy for examples of his ridiculous structures. Drain You, despite being all power chords, implies a change from minor chords to major chords every other time. Crazy. There's nothing else like it. And the best song on In Utero is still Milk It. And it's a shame there were less non-album tracks in your top 5s. They have a lot of great ones.

Nirvana - Albums ranked 1. Nevermind 5 stars Don't care if I ever hear a song from this album again. So far removed from the impact it had on me as young man in the 1990s. Almost cringe when I hear the songs played ad infinitum on the radio and it's "importance" reiterated time and time again ( yawn)... But...this is a truly great rock record. Undeniable masterpiece actually. Every song memorable and great.. Again, though..i don't care that much. 2. In Utero 5 stars Probably go back to this one more. Steve Albini doesn't nearly get enough credit for the rough edges and sound he brought to Cobain's songs. "Dumb", " Serve the Servants", "Rape Me" , "Pennyroyal Tea" are as good as anything on Nevermind. This will be my number one Nirvana record next week probably. 3. Bleach 4 stars Soft spot for this record as it was the first Nirvana record i bought and before the explosion that happened post- Nevermind. It just pulls up short based on a couple of mildly skippable songs. Pretty great debut though. Nirvana songs; top 5 1 "Aneurysm" - Live version from "From the Muddy Banks of the Wishkah" 2. " Serve the Servants" - 3. "Been A Son" - BBC Session from "Insecticide" 4. "School" 5. "Stay Away"

Frances farmer, has very cool verses, the chord progression moves in interesting shifts and the vocal delivery is very dynamic., Milk it, literally helped set the stage for more aggressive sounding heavier hardcore sounding bands to come. Very ape, has a very soaring melodic chorus, that literally sonically crashes into the ground at the end. Some of those tracks are very creative and ahead of their time, and in many ways still sound like the future of rock. I guess I just really have to disagree with a majority of these assessments. I’ve spent 20 years studying music and 12 of which teaching professionally, I’ve probably taught and broke down theory on 1000s of songs, even entire catalogs of some bands, and Nirvana still has a method about their writing that when it’s all in focus, very few others match that skillful balance of being able to communicate the music in a simplistic highly effective manner. Heart shaped box’s drum groove and vocal harmony within the verse chord progression is still one of the best arrangements I’ve ever heard. Music is obviously subjective, and no harm no foul if something isn’t your thing we can all recognize that and be cool, but to call it unmusical, not melodic and use language that is pretty disrespectful sounding in nature seems just I don’t know, not cool at all.

It’s not true that Cobain didn’t want hits or successful tunes from In Utero. He brought in Scott Litt to remix the songs that became singles because he wanted hits. The album was not a middle finger to everyone. It’s also not true that Cobain disliked Nevermind. When they finished the album, they loved it. It was only when some of their fans from the Bleach era complained about the production that he said publicly that it was too polished, but that’s not actually he own feelings about the album. It was in fact the album they intended to make.
@conorfurlong

@dave smith that’s not true. Kurt asked Albini but he did not want to revisit his mixes so Kurt asked Litt.

@dave smith You’re clearly deaf. Albini: “he [Kurt] wanted to redo it all. He wanted to remix everything. Krist didn’t think his bass was well defined enough. Kurt didn’t think his vocals came out well enough”. The record label wasn’t happy. But Kurt and Krist were not happy either. Nothing happened to Nirvana’s music that Kurt did not want to happen. If you don’t understand that then you know nothing about Nirvana or Kurt. If Kurt had been 100% happy with the record as it was, it would not have been remixed, and heavily altered during the mastering process. Period.
@conorfurlong
@conorfurlong Год назад
@dave smith I left that out for very good reason: because as he makes clear in the quote it’s his guess about what might have happened behind the scenes, he doesn’t know it as a fact because he was not there for any of those discussions. There is no evidence the remixes and additional mastering work happened because Kurt and nirvana were pressurised into doing them. There is evidence the label were unhappy but there is also evidence both Kurt and Krist were unhappy and wanted the additional work done on the tracks. I base my comments on the facts and evidence. Unlike you.

All Apologies I’m a pretty big Nirvana fan. They’re not my favorite band from the grunge/alternative scene of the 90’s but definitely one of the best rock bands of the last 30 years. I go back and forth on whether I prefer In Utero or Nevermind; I think Nevermind is certainly more immediate and catchy, but In Utero is just such a creative work of art with their most original songwriting and best production. I’m always in the mood for Nevermind though.

While you are right about the Killing Joke vs Damned history, you need to take into consideration that Cobain might not have known the Damned song. Just like many bands were influenced by Led Zeppelin or Rolling Stones without ever having heard the blues originals.

I have enjoyed reading all of these comments. Personal connections with music enrich my life, and through your words, it’s clear that this is something we share, collectively creating the buzz and lasting influence in all of our minds. My Soundgarden shirt was the ice breaker at a high school mixer. This boy was also really into Nirvana and I became a bigger fan because of him. Our song was their cover of D-7. A slow dance start with a tumultuous end. In April of 1994, Kurt’s baby blues stared right into my soul from the cover of People. Lots of tears. All of these years later, I prefer to listen to Soundgarden and Alice In Chains, but this relisten was very enjoyable. Nirvana impacted me in my own little corner of the world, giving me a Sliver of my musical whole. Thanks for covering this band Guys. 5 Songs: 1. All Apologies (Unplugged) 2. Always loved Nirvana, they just did their own thing and didn’t care what anyone else thought! Here’s my ranking of the albums: 1. In Utero (1993) - some of Nirvana’s strongest moments are on here, and the production is just perfect! Just listen to those drums! 2. Bleach (1989) - a raw, heavy, badass debut. The lyricism makes no sense, but that is more than made up for by the crunchy guitars riffs! 3. Incesticide (1992) - not a studio album, nor an album intended for casual listeners, but it features a lot of great non-album tracks that I thoroughly enjoy. 4. Nevermind (1991) - way too overproduced. I definitely prefer the harsher production of the others, but it’s still a legendary album. I also want to give an honourable mention to the ‘With The Lights Out’ box set. Some great non-album material on there. Here’s my top 10 songs also: 1. Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge On Seattle 2. Serve The Servants 3. Drain You 4. Dive 5. Scentless Apprentice 6. Anorexorcist 7. Negative Creep 8. Aero Zeppelin 9. Polly 10. I'm a huge Nirvana fan. Out of the Big 4 of Grunge, they're easily my favourite. Love Kurt's melodies, (Rick Beato often talks about how great of a melodist Kurt was - I think he even has a few videos specifically on Nirvana) Dave's drumming and Krist's bass work. Their blend of noise rock, pop, hard rock, heavy metal and hardcore punk rock is a sound that I just adore. I even like all their post-grunge imitators like Bush, Silverchair, Candlebox, Collective Soul, etc. I really like Bleach but Nevermind and In Utero, Incesticide and MTV Unplugged are the albums I really go back too.

My Nirvana picks: 3. Nevermind - Still an incredible album, but there's a cleanness to it that doesn't really indicate how good they really were. 2. In Utero - I was just as confounded when I bought this day of release as I was the first time I heard Nevermind. I like the deeper cuts on this one more than those on Nevermind, though. 1. Bleach - This is, to me, the most honest Nirvana record. I will also note that the remix of this album that came about ten years ago does not work--I have to hear the original. Top 10 Songs: 1. Aneurysm 2. About a Girl (both studio and unplugged live versions are great) 3. Serve the Servants 4. Pennyroyal Tea (especially the unplugged version) 5. Drain You 6. Even in His Youth (b-side of Smells Like Teen Spirit) 7. Negative Creep 8. Sappy (hidden track on the No Alternative comp, sometimes called Verse Chorus Verse) 9. Heart-Shaped Box 10. Dive Great band, but admittedly my least favourite of the big four of grunge. Soundgarden, AIC, PJ, Nirvana in that order.

Joe's argument that he doesn't care about Kurt Cobain's socially relevant 1991 lyrics because he didn't listen to music in 1991........is a weak one. If that was the deciding factor, then he wouldn't have any reason to comment on all the other, earlier years, either. Not unless a year in which he did listen to music happened to have similar social circumstances going on compared with those that played out, say, 30 years before Joe realized he had ears. Whatever. I choose Nevermind for the top spot. Not because it's the mainstream choice, but because it presents a fine compromise of the very best qualities of Nirvana. Nowhere else is the duality of this particular beast better presented. The pretty and catchy mashes with the cynical and revolting to form beautiful, sonic fireworks.

This made for fascinating viewing. I wholly share Jason's feelings (or lack of) toward Nirvana. I like many of their songs a lot, but I never really connected with them. Nonetheless, I think you have to recognise them as one of the most important bands in the history of rock. Their sound, style, look, lyrics etc. were paradigmatic for the mid-90s, to a degree that - arguably - no other band of the decade could match (right?) As an aside, I really like the undercurrent of irony that runs throughout many of the lyrics - "Teenage angst has paid off well / Now I'm bored and old". Nirvana's rivals were much more po faced, in my opinion, and thus much less interesting and sympathetic. Hard not to occasionally roll your eyes at Eddie Vedder, but Cobain is always taking the piss a bit, even during the really dark moments ("Forever in debt to your priceless advice").

It's easy to see why Paul McCartney became such a big Nirvana fan. Cobain's writing is very much in the tradition of that super-melodic style The Beatles established. And, as you said, there's a certain amount of sardonic humor in Nirvana's lyrics that echoes The Beatles.

Smells Like Teen Spirit was one of the songs and videos that formed my early years and probably headed my taste to where it is today. "Nevermind" became one of the main albums in the 1990's. They have sold so much that they have become one of the real classic acts. I also think Foo Fighters have done a good job of becoming the sort of "entrance" for younger generations to commerical hardrock. With that said... I think Nirvana might be the most overrated band in rock n' roll. Sure. Bands like Bon Jovi and Kiss are very big and sold out big time.. But they never really claimed to be anything other than a good time rock n' roll band. Music critiques doesn't really put them in high regard either. It's nostalgia that works on the radio and for big audiences. Nirvana still gets talked about a lot, they still sell and despite all Dave Grohls done being the drummer of Nirvana takes the cake. Kurt Cobain gets ranked as one of the best guitarists of all time? After all decades media still mentions them more than most outside of Beatles, Rolling Stones, Metallica and a few others. I just don't get it. I don't dislike them but in my eyes Pearl Jam, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Soundgarden, Rage Against the Machine or a number of acts from the same time deserve that "respect" more than Nirvana.

i think all the big bands around that scene were better than nirvana tbh, i preferred them all at the time. like you say pearl jam, soundgarden, rhcp, rage, i would add alice in chains, faith no more, stone temple pilots, smashing pumpkins. for me they were all in a different league to nirvana. i even preferred greendays first 3 albums but i think in terms of talent and how impressive what they were doing was nirvana and greenday were comparable imo. punky noisy melodic alt rock that often verged on being quite poppy. good basic chord thrashing hooky simple songs.

A very fun episode. Nirvana broke when I was a teenager and Nevermind was huge for me at the time but I don't think they've aged as well as some other music from the era. 3. Bleach (3.5) 2. In Utero (3.5) 1. Nevermind (4.5) 5. Molly's Lips 4. Schools Out 3.Pennyroyal Tea 2.Territorial Pissings 1 On A Plain.

Best to worst for me: 1. In Utero (one of my favorites of that whole decade) 2. Bleach (strong Melvins influences on this, more than other) 3. Nevermind

I use to go to this alternative club in Pittsburgh in the strip district early 90s and they played grunge and electronic music. Love that music great times in the early 90s with bands like Nirvana. It seemed like yesterday Nirvana hit the music scene. Sad its gone. Very short span.
