Which is the source of the high pitched ringing. It’s absent on the fills (he drops sample verb and turns off the noise gate for rapid snare fills. You can’t hear the ringing in the final mix. Andy always struck me as the tyoe of mixer who mixes in context so it makes sense.
It almost sounds like the close mics didn’t get included on them and only the room mics picked them up. Also, there’s a high pitched ringing from the reverb snare sample I can’t unhear (absent on the fills.). AW definitely mixes in context without soloing.
Yk, there are so many kick hits and things you can’t hear in the og or even the instrumental. You really have to get the guitar, bass, and vocals out of the way to hear everything. Dave Grohl is a legend
This might sound weird. When I was younger I had headphones where the right speaker would act up and isolate some of the instruments into the left ear. A lot of grunge and metal. Bass lines and drumlines would go into my left ear and I would hear things I never heard before. It almost felt special. I miss my ipod.
You would have loved the late 80's.....all drums taped to within an inch of their lives, no tone, no resonance Producers loved it because it made their lives so easy I hated it because I love to gear a drum sound like a drum
@@backbeat3451 That's not the drum ringing, that's some kind of extra sound layered on top. It sounds like someone hitting metal with a hammer or something, nothing like the drum just resonating.
The bass and drums were recorded live in the studio, albeit with the bass amp in an isolation booth. What you’re hearing is a little bit of leakage from the booth getting into the drum mics
@@diamond21450 Definitely wasn't, the snare alone is worth like 3k (and that individual snare is worth way more) and I think the kit is a Gretsch, definitely not cheap, it's just that he hits insanely hard.
@@5urg3x No, Butch Vig just recorded the band. Andy Wallace mixed the album. When mixing, he used drum samples to trigger reverb. The way he used them, you can’t hear the actual sample. You just hear the reverb that was made by them. Nevermind is all Dave Grohl being the best drummer ever 🙏
@@derekdfarrington11 I just googled it after the comment, apologies. I found the video where Andy Wallace talked about it. He said that he didn’t do sample replacement but he did do augmentation, where he added a reverbed snare sample behind the snare and mixed it in to have more control over the room / reverb sound. I still can’t really hear it tbh, but I listened on a phone, I’m going to see if I can download the stems and load them in a DAW tomorrow and play them through my monitors.
@@derekdfarrington11 Forgot to mention also (if anyone else is curious) - I read something else when I looked this up that I didn’t know prior - that Butchie made his own mixes of the Nevermind songs that he kept and held on to, and they were finally released as a part of the anniversary, and those tracks obv don’t contain the changes Andy made. That’s something else I’ve got to listen to 🤘
@@5urg3x you need to listen on monitors or headphone to hear it. You can tell it’s a sample because of the attack and way the reverb sounds EQd. It doesn’t sound like sending your snare track to a reverb effects unit. It sounds way more explosive.
No, these are not the drums from the album, exactly. You would be able to hear that terrible snare sample clearly on the quiet verses of the album, but you don't, cause its not there. These multitracks are ripped from a video game, Guitar Hero or something. Most likely the sound engineers who worked on the game added the snare and kick samples on top of the existing tracks to beef them up. I'm pretty certain they didn't have access to the drum mix that Andy Wallace created, since he didn't make stem recordings of the individual drums. He just made a stereo mix. The second thing I'd like to clarify is Andy Wallace used a snare sample to trigger reverb. So you hear the echo of a snare sample mixed with Dave Grohl's actual snare track.
Anyone else hear that sample that’s triggering with the snare and sometimes to bass drum. Sounds like a timbale ? Maybe it was added because the snare goes out of tune throughout the track ?

I do not add any effects, including reverbs. All these effects are already present in the tracks of the multitrack, and it is impossible to remove them.
@@drum_tracks Right, the "ring" of the snare drum is normal. Dave usually played a wooden ( I think birch ) snare, I can almost gaurantee this is a typical metal Tama snare. To avoid the "ping" you'd have to loosen the actual snare strap on the bottom of the drum but then you would get more of a rattle and buzz sound. Yes Dave hits very hard, but he also positions his snare kind of high so as the stick comes down, not only does the tip hit the center of the drum head, but the side of the stick hits the metal edge called the hoop. This causes the lugs (screws) to loosen and change the tuning of the drum. Over time you'll need to replace the hoop because it's bent to shit. I learned to play drums by watching and listening to Dave. I know every move, every hit, every detail. I've studied him for 32 years. I have a masters degree in Grohlology. I could be his replacement !
